I am intrigued by this backpack. It's a medium-sized bag. Not a daypack, and not a pack for a week of camping. There is no shoulder strap for carrying as a duffel (this would have been a nice touch), but there are 2 handles, on the top and side, for carrying as a suitcase. Of course, there are also shoulder straps for use as a backpack (with belt) hidden underneath a zippered panel, so this pack has the dual use as a "suitcase" and a backpack. The main part of the pack consists of one large compartment, with a zippered mesh pocket as well. Attached to the middle of the front of the pack is a more or less conventional daypack. It can be removed for use, or left on the larger pack for extra storage. The smaller daypack is more like a small school daypack, with room for a medium-sized computer (in a padded sleeve) and various other odds and ends. There are two large mesh bottle holders on the front of the pack. I'd rather these be on the sides, but they would not be available when using the larger pack with the daypack attached (be careful the bottles don't fall out when taking it off and laying it on its side). The zippers are not as easy to use as I had expected. You have to tug the fabric this way and that to get the zippers around the corners. The daypack zipper has an added, hidden snap that you have to undo to open the zipper. I presume this is there so it can't easily be removed by a thief. There are also straps that wrap around the daypack, with the buckles hidden under fabric bands. All paired zippers have holes so they can be locked together (if not locked, consider a twist tie to keep them closed... just so it takes a few extra seconds to untwist). The bag is a bit large for the "official" sized carry-on on a commercial plane, but I believe many airlines will allow it if it isn't bulging. This might mean that you need to remove the daypack. I'll experiment with this and add to this review. I've used it on an overnight, and I plan to use it on a 2 week trip through the Panama Canal.Mine is a "burnt red" color. It won't show dirt as obviously as a brighter color, but darker colors will show dirt and stains less. I've used an REI luggage backpack for years (gray) and wish I had a darker color.

I used this bag on a recent European trip. The bag is overall excellent. The day pack is great and there's a lot of room in the main compartment. However, I tend to over pack and in doing so it makes it difficult to attach the day pack to the main pack via the zippers. I imagine the next time I use this I will pack smarter and that won't be an issue. During transport, either with the day pack zipped to the back or clipped to the front in an alternate connection, both hands are available which is nice and all connections are made easily. I felt that the alternate connection of the day pack to the shoulder straps wasn't as practical as I'd hoped for. This allows you to wear the day pack on your belly side. It's comfortable but I didn't like anything in front of me. Not a problem... just use it as it comes normally. But, in its normal configuration the bag can't be carried on (the main bag alone does fit in most airline carry on compartments). It requires you to separate the two bags. If that would bother you I'd advise you to seek another model bag. The main compartment is just that... nothing fancy and no hidden pockets for storage, just one zipper on the top inside part. The day bag has two internal storage sleeves but nothing else. Don't let that fool you, I could fit a LOT in the day pack. Still, I would have liked some more compartments in both sections. Everything was extremely durable too. Nothing wrong there. The last thing that stood out was hiding the shoulder straps for storage of the back in transit to avoid the straps from potential damage. It took less than a minute to do/undo and was pretty easy but if you're in a rush it's kind of a pain. Nice feature though and one that I used on every flight or bus ride. I'd recommend this bag to anyone but a friend had the Osprey Porter 46 and it looked like a simpler, more practical bag with plenty of space, plenty of compartments, was one unit, and had easy access to pertinent documents as well as quick storage of shoulder straps. My friend looked like he had less trouble during transit than I did considering I had two bags to deal with (if the day pack was worn on the front) rather than his one.

Used this backpack for the last couple years through about 15 or 20 countries, all in hostels. Bag locks for security which is nice if you want to leave it at a hostel while out on a tour or something. I first got the biggest one as I'm a 6' tall (183cm) male, but ended up not needing all that space, and it was just a bit larger than most airlines' carry-on threshold. That being said, I used it as my carry-on for a year and never had anyone challenge me on it, and it fit into overheads just fine. I just hate being stressed about it so I switched for the smaller girl size, which is still plenty of room. If you put too much stuff in the small bag and try to attach it, you'll stress and eventually break the zipper. That's why I ended up getting the replacement, because the zipper broke and they replaced the whole bag for me, and that was after a year...no questions asked....great customer service. There aren't a ton of compartments in the main bag, but I use packing cubes, so all good, but wouldn't mind a few more compartments in future models. I like that the bag zips all the way down to you can access everything in your bag without digging through everything. I always spray my gear with silicone spray, so I'm not sure if it's waterproof without it, but needless to say, mine never had any leaks. I also like that the straps all fold in and zip away, giving it more of a luggage look instead of the backpacker chaos with tons of straps and crap attached to the bag. When checking it in at an airline or leaving it somewhere, tuck the straps away for a clean look. The small bag is awesome, and I usually put my camelback water bag and straw in there, as well as whatever I'd need for a day trip. I'd like the small bag to be a bit larger though so I could take it for an overnight. I've seen more of these bags in more hostels around the world than any other bag. Backpackers are usually on a budget, so this bag's price point is perfect. Bags with similar qualities are way more expensive. That's saying something! Good job Osprey

Nice Pack but not the best choice for carry-on. I returned mine (size m/l).FITTING IT ON A PLANE: Hit or miss. While you may get it on the plane, the wireframe can be too long depending on the airplane. It did not fit in the top bin of a large trans-oceanic A330 (2, 4, 2 seat configuration). This could be since there are 2 aisles and 4 bins. You have to place it sideways taking up 2 spaces so I placed it in the outer bin since those are smaller anyways. It did fit in a smaller 1-aisle plane (2 bins instead of 4). They did weigh them at the airport but I wasn't hassled about the size so I didn't try to fit it in the size checker.CARRYING THE BAG (3.2kg in the small pack and 9.5 in the big one):Basically, you must carry the small pack in your hand if you are wearing the big one.Carrying the daypack in my hand: Best configuration, I did not get tired when using the waist belt and felt almost no pressure on my shoulders. Without the belt you will get tired and/or pain, I recommend using the belt all the time.Clipping the daypack to the front: not functional. This makes the shoulder straps feel very heavy and will tire you out quickly. Maybe if I adjusted the shoulder straps differently it would have worked but the daypack straps are very short with no adjustments so it rides pretty high on your chest. With the bag moderately full I was unable to get the small pack zipped to the outside of the large one so I did not try that configuration. The small pack is a good daypack and doesn't tire you out using it all day with some essentials (camera, batterypack, small water bottle, raincover).CONCLUSION: I would buy the fairpoint 40 and a separate daypack, I think that one is a bit shorter and would fit in most airline bins without risk. This bag is a 40L + 15L anyways, so might as well get them separately and have the 40L actually be a true carry-on size.

The Osprey Farpoint 55 is a big, well constructed pack, with loads of useful features which let you tailor it for a variety of uses. I find it useful when I'm going out to paint because I can put my paper, media and larger brushes in the main section, and keep my paint, pens and liquid media in the detachable daypack. When traveling, its great because my essentials for a trip can fit easily in the main section while my laptop (either my MacBook Pro 13", or my 15" Acer will fit okay - if you have a 17", it likely will not!) or iPad and other in-flight items go in the detachable day-pack, so the main pack is in overhead luggage, the small one under the seat. The Farpoint I got is a bright red color - easy to spot on a crowded baggage claim conveyor, and its great that the bag can be locked when checked into baggage. I'm getting a good TSA lock to go with this! Both the main pack and the detachable are well padded. The day pack has a large zippered interior pouch and an open topped section behind that, in addition to the main space. There are two smallish mesh pockets on the outside of the day-pack, just the right size for a small water bottle, or a smartphone and charger. For hiking, the straps are very comfortable and fully adjustable. I like that they can be stowed away completely when not in use.I have only a few minor issues with this pack. The first is that the zippers are tight and hard to manipulate. This will probably get better as the pack gets used more. Also, the clasp for removing the the detachable day-pack is very small and very hard to manipulate with my largish fingers - as I said its a minor issue, but it means I can't detach the day-pack as quickly as I'd like. Also, the day-pack does not have a flat bottom, so it will not stand up on its own.l Otherwise I give this pack an "A"!

Overall I quite like this piece of luggage. Originally I bought and 80, a 70 and a 55. Never got roudn to using the 80. When 70 & 55 arrived together, I put against one another but was disappointed the 55 height and width is almost the same as the 70. Only the depth difference make the 55 smaller in effect, i.e. no chance of having the 55 as cabin luggage. So returned the 55 and bought a Red colour 70 instead. There are times when I would want to have hands free while moving around or one hand pull a wheeled Sojourn 80 or Farpoint 65 Wheels (yes have those too) and one hand free to hold hand rails etc. Or travel by train, leave the main pack on the floor and unzip the piggy-back pack to be with me at the seat. The advantage of this piggy-back pack over the other small Osprey packs is that the main zip is lockable. There are two pullers for the main zip where the puller have holes large enough for a TSA approved luggage padlock to slot in. Second advantage over a Daylite is the netted section inside is slightly padded. I have 3 Daylite, Daylite Plus etc. and none have these two useful features. One slight disappointment is the thinness of the materials used for the main pack. OK the harness cover could be this thin but I was hoping the main parts would be thicker, e.g. 600 denier Cordura, or a thick Ripstop material. Basically I would never choose to use the side handle as it is sewn onto the thin material without much backing to reinforce the sewing. The last thing I was is a rip during a 3 month work assignment where I may have to transfer from boat to boat to inspect each of them a few days at a time during the production phase of a project. Hence only giving this 4 stars in consideration of value against the recommended retail price.

This is a very good hybrid backpack: it is exactly what it says on the can. As advertised by the manufacturer, it is NOT intended as a full-on hiking pack, but more of a hybrid bag suited to both air travel and urban public transport/walk environments, with capability to do some day hikes, plus some, if you really push it. I foresee this bag paying off when you avoid checked luggage fees -- especially if you are a family group. They slip under the size radar and go as carry on. I plan on doing this hiking in europe next year (UK and alps). The back panel, hip belt and harness pack away seamlessly, and when unfurled do permit you to carry 40-50LB loads for long distances.I loaded this pack with 35LB of gear and did an overnight camp trip up Mt Whitney (22 miles and 6100 feet altitude gain, overnight frost at 12000 feet). I cannot complain since the bag made it all the way without any structural issues whatsoever, and was comfortable, within reason. I clipped on my dslr camera capture pro plate to the strap and it all worked fine. However to do this I had to jerry-rig the bag with cord loops top and bottom for mats and sleeping bags and over fill both the main and piggy back bags. I pushed this bag past its hybrid limit. On the Whitney hike would have been quite a bit better off with a larger 65L old-skool classic backpack, with lots of external straps and pockets (I really missed these). I think I unintentionally crossed the barrier between the bags intended and not-recommended use and so would not recommend it for full-on hiking trips. My next hiking trip in europe will be more hut-to-hut with restaurant meals, and this bag will be a perfect fit for that style of travel. This bag is great, but don't expect portage miracles.

Love it! Bough the S/M -First backpack and I will defintely be using for a lifetime! Bought for a 9day Europe trip and it was a lifesaver! The day pack is awesome! I was able to use to venture out during day and keep wallet, cards, spare change, charger, phone, sunglasses, hand sanitizer, cardigan, toilet wipe pack and still had space to pack in the souvenirs we picked up along the way. The backpack itself fits a lot! I packed in it (using cubes) 7 jeans, 2 jean shorts, 4 pj' pants, 15 shirts, 10 underwear, 4 bras,7 pair of socks, 1 fleece sweater, 2pair of shoes (flip flops and flats) toiletry bag. It seemed full then, but still managed to pack about 8-10 small souvenirs on the way back. The straps are great, didn't cut in for the weight I carried (maxed out at 44lbs) without day pack. The waist straps do help greatly to distribute the weight to hips and of shoulders. Wish it was a bit more "breathable" on the back but to it's defense it was a bit humid and we walked alot with these packs. It took a beating, as we were on 2 trains, 4 flights, subways, buses and to and from hotels. No tears, snags or any sort of quality issues. Also I carried on all my flights without issue, granted I did not put it in the "standard/max baggage bin" it would have not fit, No Way! I removed daypack and carried it as my "personal/hand bag" and stowed away the harness/straps and had no issues, also fit way better in the overheads than most "approved" carry on wheelie bags :/ See photo- this is packed to the max but without the daypack. if I had a negative comment/issue is when the daypack and backpack are both packed, it a bit hard to zipper daypack onto the big pack, not impossible but does take some muscle and coordination.

I bought this for a week-long trip to Iceland because it looked like I could carry it on if I zipped off the 15L attached pack. I was able to carry it on without challenge, but on smaller aircraft had to gate check while on larger aircraft (767) had to turn it sideways to fit in the overhead bin. On the way home, with gifts, it was stuffed and heavy so I decided to check it once I got back in the states for the last domestic leg of my itinerary. I flew American Airlines domestically to the connecting US international airport, where I picked up IcelandAir. I’m a tall female (68 inches) with a long torso so the men’s version is fine for me and with the adjustability it was comfortable and easy to use.The full open zipper (rather than stuffing the thing from the top) made getting to my gear easy without always having to unpack then repack. The zip-off pack was convenient and also easy to get things into and out of without necessarily having to unpack and then repack to get a specific item out. It was a great day pack on the trip. The whole thing is low profile compared to other packs and especially “book” backpacks. I have the reddish colored version and checking it got it a little dirty, but spot cleaning was easy and it held up (no scratches, picks, or tears). I looked at the smaller version (40L) but I’m glad I got the 55L instead with the judiciously selected winter gear I needed and saving a little room for gifts (I squashed an Icelandic sweater into it for the way home). I recommend this backpack. It’s roomy (all things considered), and allows flexibility.

Bought this pack to take on the Camino de Santiago. We spent five long weeks together. On the flight over I wore the smaller pack, carried the larger pack as my carry on. No issues with the airlines. On the flight back I again wore the smaller pack, but checked the larger pack as luggage.I carried a heavy load. Had to make several adjustments during the first week to find the right fit. Over time, the pack formed to my back and became a part of me. The sturdy waist strap helped keep weight off of my shoulders.Kept my valuables, i pad, meds, extra glasses, in the small pack. If I felt the need to, I would remove the small pack and wear it rather than leave it in the open bays where I usually slept.Put a TSA lock on it at night, and when in larger cities. When fully loaded the smaller pack protrudes enough that a generic 55 liter rain cover really wasn't large enough.Though probably not intended for this purpose, the compression straps that wrap around the smaller pack make a good place to carry walking poles. The mesh pockets are inadequate to hold a .5 liter water bottle. The bottle fits, but is slings out when you put on the pack. I kept three .5 liter bottles of water on top and inside the pack. That was fine with me, as when I took a break the first thing I did was take the pack off. After five weeks of daily and extended use the pack shows no wear. I noticed a lot of long distance hikers, particularly Americans, opted for Osprey packs.

I purchased this bag to accompany me on a 3 week trip through France in the summer when temperatures can vary from the mid 50's to the low 90's. I am by no means an "overpacker" but I was concerned when this thing showed up at my door. Overall I would absolutely recommend this bag as an alternative to regular rolling luggage. Using the AmazonBasics 4-Piece Packing Cube Set (Small, Medium, Large, and Slim) I was able to fit 4 pants, 3 shorts, 6 tanks, 10 shirts, 2 light-medium sweaters, 2 rompers, 3 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of sandals, a good handful of socks/underpants/bathingsuits, and toiletries and still not feel like I was hurting for room. I very much liked having the detachable day pack and used it almost every day throughout my travels. My favorite part of both bags was having the ability to lock the zippers and not worry about anyone fishing through anything while my attention was elsewhere. I am a smaller sized human (5' 0") and using the many snaps and straps, was able to adjust it comfortably to sit on my body without feeling shoulder fatigue. I did not do any long distance travel with it on my back but was able to carry it for an hour or 2 at a time without it being a problem. I believe at its heaviest both bags connected weighed about 20 lbs. It feels verys well built and I can't wait to see how many more miles I can put on it. *The picture attached shows the day pack held in front of me and the backpack alone on my back

Just returned from a 6-month trip around South America and the USA. This Osprey bag was perfect. Really sturdily built of great materials, exceptionally well designed. The way it opens - fully, not just from the top - makes packing and unpacking really easy. It's not got loads of compartments, but that was fine, I was using packing cubes anyway. It's comfortable to wear (as long as you have it fitted properly so that most of the weight is being carried on your hips via the hip straps), and though not as suited to long hikes as some other bags, it's perfect for travelling and carrying between airports, bus stations, train terminals and hostels. It's got a useful carrying handle and the main shoulder straps can be packed away to make it appear smaller - I managed to get it on board at least one plane as carry-on.I rarely used it as a single pack, usually keeping the day pack separately, simply because when the main bag is really full, it bulges out a bit too much to connect the day pack. But this wasn't a disadvantage for my needs. The daypack itself was also well designed, great for walks, cities, carry-on on planes and buses, etc. It's got lots of useful compartmentsI'd recommend this bag incredibly highly for anyone going travelling.

I bought this bag for a backpacking trip that ultimately got cancelled due to COVID, but I was finally able to use the bag last week and I felt compelled to come back and leave a review. This is hands down the best bag that I own. I typically use standard duffles when I travel (especially for shorter weekend trips) but when planning for a longer trip I wanted a bag that could accommodate a lot more and also be easier to carry around. I knew this bag was designed for both of those criteria, but I was blown away by how easy it was to fit so much stuff into the bag.I did use packing cubes which were amazing as well, but it was so easy to fit all the packing cubes and some extra stuff into the bag's main compartment.I was even more surprised by how much fit inside the smaller detachable day bag. I was able to get my laptop, toiletries, a Nintendo switch, the docking station, a pro-controller, all the necessary chargers, a large glass flask, and some extra little things, with a little room left to spare.I did opt to detach the day bag and clip it to the front, which made carrying the bags super easy. I think this will be my new go-to bag for future trips. It feels really sturdy and has so much expandable space. 10/10 would recommend.

This backpack is fantastic. The zip-away day pack is very novel and to give your lower back a break, you can even wear it on your front and there's clips to still attach it to the main pack. Its laptop sleeve accommodated my 15" macbook pro (non-retina). I brought it to Australia and since I fly standby, I needed something that could be carry-on and have an okay time putting it in a leftover overhead bin as I'm often one of the last to board the plane. Nobody questioned it being carry-on size and I always found a spot for it. I really appreciated the zip-up/roll-down panel that can cover all of the back/hip straps to convert it more into a duffle making security and stow-away a breeze as well. It's made of a very durable,water-resistant material to where I wasn't even worried about breaking a zipper when it was stuffed with souvenirs on the way home. The hip belt is very comfortable and puts all the weight on your pelvis, so if you've never used a hip belt before, don't imagine that you're carrying a 60lb pack like you would a backpack. The shoulder straps are just there to prop it up more than support the weight. I went with the med/large size option which just means it's the newer model which has a tiny bit more room to it.

I like this backpack in general. Although, I wish I had known the inside of the grey/black version was a neon green. For traveling it is a good backpack Durable, water resistant and easy to pack. My big complaint, which is more just because it is not clearly stated and the back and forth in discussion is not clear - the large version of the 55L is NOT carry-on size. The first two times I carried it on I was stopped before boarding and pulled out of line (with the smaller version zipped OFF) because it appeared too long. And guess what. It is too long. by about 2-3 inches (maybe the s/m size would fit - thats what I would buy if I could go back) Now, in all fairness,I never over pack my backpack so both times I was able to shove it in to the bin by curving the hard wire part - but if this backpack were full when this happened they definitely would have made me check it. Of course, often the airline won't notice/care and you'll get away with it, and I still take the chance - but it is too long for the dimensions for carry on and if they stop you (especially on a low-cost carrier) you may end up having to pay to check it because it does not technically fit.If you don't mind paying to check it, then its a fine backpack.
