This is an excellent tool for fine grating of chocolate, parmesan, cinnamon and many other items. The blade is an array of razor-sharp cutting teeth (mind your fingers!) and it makes light work of grating even very hard items like nutmeg.I also like it for zesting lemons and limes. You can take the brightly coloured zest off cleanly and quickly, leaving the bitter white pith on the fruit. The handle is comfortable and the blade is mounted in a rigid steel frame.Bear in mind this is a fine grater and Microplane make various other models in the range for coarser grating and shaving tasks (carrot, coconut, rock salt etc.)By the way, if you are thinking of investing in a Microplane grater I strongly recommend one of the models, such as this one, from the "Gourmet" range rather than one from their slightly cheaper range with clear plastic frames. The blades on those are the same, but the plastic material used for the frames is just too fragile. I have owned one for over two years but it has cracked in several places (during normal use) and can only be used placed horizontally on a chopping board or other flat surface and is unusable for, for example, grating directly into a saucepan on the stove, or directly over a plate, because the frame has lost its rigidity.Furthermore the Gourmet series grater has a flat, rubber-coated, non-slip foot which helps it stay in position on a chopping board or other flat surface. The clear plastic frame by comparison is slightly curved and has a tendency to skate about and slip. Finally, the handle on the cheaper plastic models slides off and has a tendency to fill up with water during washing. The Gourmet series does not have slide-off handles so this problem doesn't arise.

I demured from the idea of buying expensive microplanes like this for ages, convinced that the cheaper alternatives couldn't be significantly lesser than their higher-priced counterparts - egg on face time again. They're worlds apart, so much so that I use a cheap one for day to day stuff, nutmeg shavings etc, and keep this one aside for zesting, grating ginger etc. With the cheaper planes all I'd normally accomplish was a stringy paste and more pulp atop the plane than beneath, with this one it's actually sharp enough to cut/grate instead of mushing.I suspect it will eventually blunt enough to require being replaced, but it's been in use for more than nine months now and is still seemingly as sharp as it was on day one.

Excellent. Contrary to some of the other comments, the label stuck onto the back of the grater came off cleanly in one piece - no soaking or scraping required. I don't know if they're using different stickers now or the other reviewers were unlucky/clumsy, but all I can say is mine peeled straight off.I bought it to grate garlic and ginger and it has worked perfectly, producing puree rather than grated 'strips'. I also grated a chilli with similar results. I just hope it stays sharp and that the frame is solid. Cleaning was a bit more effort, as the ginger was quite fibrous - I couldn't just rinse it clean,it needed gently wiping with a sponge/brush.I hope that's helpful for anybody considering one of these :)

I first used one of these at a friend's house and couldn't believe how much better it was than my usual grater. I baulked slightly at the price when I bought my own, but it is worth every penny. It makes light work of zest, nutmeg, garlic and parmesan. I've had mine for years and wouldn't be without it.I bought this one for my son-in-law for his birthday. He is a keen cook and is thrilled with it.By the way, if it does start to work less effectively (which mine did after about 5 years of almost daily use), microplane have a fantastic customer service. I sent my old one back to them and they sent me a new one by return of post. Brilliant!

A very sturdy and well made product. The handle feels nice in hand, and the grater itself is very sharp and made of high quality metal. My one issue wasn't with the product itself, but a sticker applied to the back of the grater. Boiling water didn't remove it, nor did vigorous scrubbing with a wire brush. However, using motorcycle chain cleaner (a strong, fast acting solvent) combined with a small amount of scrubbing quikcly removed all traces of the sticker. I would highly recommend this method, or similar, to any buyers unfortunate enough to also have an annoying sticker placed on the back.

One of the best graters around, it is easy to clean, and stays sharp and effective. I purchased one for a family member but I've had a microplane for over a decade, with near daily use. The plastic clip-on cover that comes with it was lost a long time ago, but regardless of that, tossing the microplane into the cutlery drawer over the years has not caused any damage at all (at least, not noticeable). The bottom rubber piece has got damaged slightly over the years through use, but it's still there.

This whizzes effortlessly through Parmesan and citrus zest etc. It would have got the full 5 stars, but a sticky label giving some information had been stuck on the rear of the grater. Another label bearing a bar code had been stuck on top, obscuring the information. I just hope the info wasn't important as I never got to read it. The info label would not peel off cleanly and despite soaking the grater for ages in hot soapy water, and scrubbing away with a brush, the grater is still sticky.

I've gone through 2 Microplanes in the last year or so. They were the ones with a clear plastic grater mounting. They both exhibited the same problem - a stress crack developed in the plastic surround and subsequent use of the microplane made the crack bigger and other cracks developed - then it lost all rigidity and became useless. This one is different - the grater mounting is metal, which means it should last a long, long time before it needs replacing.

Well designed and works well. Possibly due to it being a fine grater, it doesn't grate your fingers when grating the last little piece of what you're grating. I use it for mainly grating garlic, which it does really well. I have only used it a few times and it has therefore only been in the dishwasher a few times, so I am unable to comment on how well the rubber and metal parts fair with the caustic dishwasher detergent.

I wanted to understand what “grade” to get. I might update as I try more things. The Fine Grater when you grate garlic produces an interesting dry fibrous purée. When you grate Parmesan you get very fine gratings very light - lighter than expected. I think my Parmesan wedges are definitely lasting longer which is a benefit. I’m really happy with it so far. I didn’t have the sticker issue. Hope that helps.

I had the original fine grater with the plastic frame, which wasn't very strong and with time cracked then broke. This new version has a steel frame, which seems much stronger and should hopefully last. The fine grater it self is very sharp and glides through orange and lemon skins with ease, it also grates ginger, nutmeg in the same vein, very happy with this purchase.

This is so easy and efficient to use. It makes fiddly food preparation a pleasure. It’s especially good for garlic and ginger. A normal grater just tears them, but the microplane grates them into a delicious pulp on one side and the other side is left clean of food. It is easy to clean, just run a tap over it both sides. I highly recommend this product.

Fantastic grater and makes zesting an absolute breeze hence the product itself deserves 5 stars. However the supplier rather stupidly stuck a big product info sticker on the back of the actual grater which was difficult to remove and left a LOT of sticky residue which of course you don't want on your food. I'm still trying to get the remains of it off.

The plastic cover on this had a label on it that on removal left it very sticky. When I contacted the supplier they were very pleasant if a little surprised and after a few questions to determine if I could have removed the label without leaving the cover sticky, very happily and promptly sent me a cover without the offending label. A very useful tool.

After many years of use an older version of this fine grater finally came apart. This replacement is better designed with a more comfortable handle. The tool feels robust and well-made and, as its predecessor, does the job. There are plastic versions of this grater but I don't think they stand up to the pressure exerted when grating parmesan cheese.
