We are big fans of Star Wars. And we have a lot of Lego (a huge lot!) so this is a great combination and we got several little hands in our family that are extremely skilled at putting challenging and exciting projects together. The Lego Boost projects generally fit in the more advanced builder category as we found with first Lego Boost Creative toolbox, that I think is one of the best Lego sets if not one of the best toys for children. I genuinely believe all parents should have a Lego Boost set around. And given what you get (electronics and sensors) plus the educational experience it delivers, these sets come at very reasonable prices. Also because like in the former set a range of models can be build from the box.So it offers a far more lasting attraction that most Lego sets that are already great for play and display. This set seems slightly less value than the former non-Star Wars Boost Creative toolbox set as it only includes (digital) instructions to build 3 droids. While so far (pre further updates) you could build and experiment with 6 Boost creations through the app in the original Boost Creative Toolbox. Also this set is sold at a higher price point, possibly due to Star wars licensing aspects. However for that higher price you also get many more pieces; 1177, vs the first Boost set’s 847 pieces.. So I think the price remains mote than fair and it is super fun and educational.Lastly, Boost sets interact through our children’s favourite gadget, the iPad or most other mainstream mobile devices (IOS, Android and Kindle smart devices). I really appreciate how the creations can be easily programmed by sequences which is a super-educational and funny manner to introduce kids to coding. The age advice is for 8-years and older. However our 6 year old builder stunned us repeatedly by single-handedly and flawlessly completing the Boost projects. Interestingly in this set is that you can create each of the three models and then remove the motor and sensor and play with an other one. So you don’t have to take your full creations apart when moving on to another. Or.. like in our case take the motor-component from the original Boost Creative Toolbox set and let the droids interact with each other.I’m quite surprised Lego didn't yet release more software/coding updates, further online building instructions, additional electronic parts like sound and light to complement the Boost-range. So I’m hoping and waiting for that. With the first non-Star Wars Boost set Lego later released some Ninjago and City sets that could be brought to life with the Boost electronic, it would be very interesting if they went on that route with some of the Star Wars Lego as sets as well, we have an UCS Sand-crawler that bags to be motorised!)

When I saw this set released I was very excited. I enjoy making Lego with my 6 year old son and we both enjoy Star Wars, so this was a no-brainer purchase. We had already enjoyed the original Boost set and this contributed to being confident the play experience would be positive (having ironed out our wrinkles of bluetooth connectivity experience with that set).I think the droids are very well realised. R2D2 and Gonk have real personality and are good representations of the screen versions (well, apart from Gonk's arms of course!). The Mouse is a sort of bonus addition i'd say, but does demonstrate a useful way to use the move hub in car type builds that kids may appreciate when making theirown motorised constructions using the hub.I think three very well realised controllable robots for the price makes it one of the better value Lego sets available.Navigating the app and becoming familiar with the icons and their purpose is a bit convoluted. For owners who may find progressing through the tasks a bit tedious, do stick with it, there is a novel pay off about 3/4 of the way through, where R2 is slightly dismantled, but I don't want to spoil the surprise! This build could have been trailed in ads and packaging to add motivation. I do think the separation between Lego toy division and Lego education hampers the accessibility of the functionality of what the Boost system is capable of, when after all it is more capable than Lego Wedo 2. However the programming of the latter is presented in a much more structured way. This set does serve to allow good playability to be achieved but it could achieve more educationally with just a little more thought and structure to the app.The original Boost could be similarly criticised, so it's slightly disappointing this is still the case with a set released 18 months later. My suggestions for improvement would be to address this lack with an app update providing opportunity for semi complete models and prompts to the child to improve or add to the model, in the way the original R2D2 set 9748 did. In addition, i'm sure i'm not alone in wanting additional bag 12s to be available for order (as long as the price was reasonable). Having more than one droid built and usable, including their accessory would be a boon. (Owners of both 17101 and this set would of course be able to have two droids operational. Making these interact through the app would be an incredible extension)Set 17101 was 'updated' a few months later by the possibility to combine with an arctic truck and a Ninjago dragon, i'm hopeful, but not optimistic that such additional features will be offered for this set.In conclusion, a very good set, but with perhaps never to be realised potential to be great!

The LEGO Star Wars Boost Droid set consists of three droids (R2D2, Gronk and a mouse droid) with a single shared tablet/phone controlled movement hub.Unlike normal LEGO sets, there are no printed assembly instructions. Your first step will be to download the LEGO Star Wars Boost app (which was a bit difficult to find in the App Store). The entire app is done in LEGO style. Just like the original printed instructions in normal LEGO sets, there are no words involved. Everything is picture based. We found the digital assembly instructions very easy to use. After assembly, the same app is used to program the hub for movement. The programming tutorial built into the app will introduce you to the movement hub's ability, not only to move, but to detect objects directly in front of it and recognize the sound of clapping. The basic programming is relatively easy to use - there are different tiles in a menu allowing the droid to move forward, backwards, turn or stop. Simply drag and connect tiles to create a series of actions/movements for your droids. For example, attaching a "move forward" tile to the "clapping" tile will have your droid move forwards whenever it detects clapping. Attaching a "stop" tile to the "object detection" tile will have your droid stop when it detects something in front of it. The tutorial does a decent job of explaining this through pictures and animations but a few written instructions as a supplement would have helped reduce the learning curve. Also, it should be noted that the droids function best on hard surfaces...they still work on carpet, but not nearly as well. The actual LEGO pieces and hardware in this set are superb, but the app could be improved. We understand wanting to stay true to the LEGO style by limiting everything to pictures, but written instructions would have been helpful during the programming section and to navigate the app itself.

I bought this for The Boy and he had a blast building the three different robots. The downside for me was that all the build instructions are through the App rather than being a paper booklet included in the package. We half expected this to be the case but it was still a bit of a blow as chances are your device will low battery you whilst building - law of averages states so!As you can see from the rather dim photograph you can display all 3 robots at the same time. However, ther eis only one power pack included in the box so you cannnot operate all threee together. Also, R2D2 will not stand up without the power block inserted,Gonk and the Mouse both stand independantly so not a big problem if they are going to spend more time being dust collection points on your shelf than actually running.I haven't used the App personally but The Boy reports it is easy to select the functions you want your robot to perform. Even better they do operate smoothly and in ways you expect from seeing the robots in the films. I will hold my hand up and admit that the R2D2 one made me laugh like a drain as you can make him do his "agitated" squawk and spin. The Mouse is a nippy little beast - which I didn't expect even though when you see them on the Death Star in A New Hope they zoom around. Gonk makes a really odd noise when he moves which also tickled my funny bone. For us they were well worth purchasing even though they will spend 99% of their time in the display shelving.

I bought this set for my 12 year old son, so he would have something to do while in lockdown because I could see he has been quite bored, and it was excellent. He was extremely happy with it. It has provided him hours of entertainment so far.We usually share lego builds, taking turns to do a page each, not because he needs help but just because it's an activity that's fun to do together. But this time I left it all to my son. He had no trouble following the instructions or using the app. He built a droid per day for three days just to stretch it out a bit, starting with the Mouse Droid, then Gonk, then finally R2-D2. I thought R2-D2 looked like an especially good build. And even after building them all he still has more missions to do on the app. He's had a really great time coding the droids to drive around the house and make lots of noises. I recommend stocking up on batteries. It's an incredibly expensive set for what you get in the box. I suppose you're paying for the app as well, really. But I justified it by telling myself that I was paying for my son's entertainment and happiness, and to get him off youtube for a few days, and it has definitely paid off in that respects because he's spent plenty of time on it.

We got this for my 13 year old son who is "EVERYTHING" Lego. He's also very techy and loves his gadgets so felt this was a perfect blend! His first comment was "There is no assembly book" - which is indeed correct, there is a quick start guide which instructs you to download the App and go from there (all the instructions are there - which I think is actually a good thing - saves more booklets being lost)! Once we had cracked that he spent a good solid morning putting R2D2 together which produces an impressive looking model! The motor that makes it all work does require 6 AAA batteries and a screwdriver to access but once fitted is interchangable between the various models you can build. He commented its a little faffy moving the motor from one droid to another but relatively easy to do.He mentioned that he wanted to build everything before fiddling around with the programming side of things but he found the builds rewarding and really enjoyed doing them - he was very impressed with the final model!Overall a great set but, yet again, WAY too much money - £168.00 is very expensive - I mean, its Lego so its expensive but still feels like a LOT of money for a toy to me!

This is a pretty decent set, but I'd probably describe it more as an "experience" than a typical LEGO set. Be sure to check the requirements, as you will absolutely need to have the right type of device to use the corresponding app that goes with the "experience". From there, it's a decently challenging build for kids. I'd probably say a kid in the 8-10-year-old range is a good fit, maybe even a bit older. This is not something to give your five-year-old (especially one who can't read yet) and expect them to just figure it out, no matter how "smart" the kid is. Once you are really into building and using the app, the droids that are built are pretty neat. Note that there's only one "engine" that all three droids must share, but you can build all the droids at once. For the Star Wars and LEGO fan, this is perfect. Unlike most sets, the droids can actually do something and be something to play with rather than sit on a shelf. That said, it is pretty expensive for what it is. Would be a great gift for the kid in your life, especially if you want to be the "cool aunt/uncle" :) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

No paper instructions? Luckily we've got a tablet that the app would work on otherwise this would have still been sat in the box as none of our phones were compatible. Everything you need to know is included in the app and the build instructions and programming sections are both relatively comprehensive but to be honest it's not a kit for the fainthearted. It's quite overwhelming when first looking at all the bits and especially when the app is a bit laggy but after a joint effort between us it all worked out. It was actually a fun rainy weekend project for us but it was a steep learning curve for the novice builder. Eventually got it all working but they only work in our hall as that's the only place with a big enough area of laminate for the little bots to run on.Good fun though, once the app works and you get the hang of it all. Nice kit but be check device compatibility for the app first and make sure you've got a flat non-carpeted area to use the models on. The makers might want to consider adding paper instructions too though as they could be handy down the line somewhere.

This lego set is very expensive. My 9 year old daughter spent a good couple of hours making the R2D2 toy. It involved quite a bit of fiddling about on the iPad to download the app and find out how to use it, before the instructions came up. The instructions are only available online. This is a bit disappointing, as a bit of the model broke off, after falling onto the floor, and it was quite tricky to find the exact part within the instructions to find out where to fix it. A paper booklet would have been very long, but it would have been easier to fix, without having to go through the rigmarole with the iPad again. My daughter gave up at this stage.I, however, enjoyed making up the other models and working out how to get them to move. I would say that the most enjoyment comes from the making and the joy of seeing such a detailed creation come to life. My kids, certainly, didn't bother getting the programmable interactive part going. It was hard enough following the making instructions.

This is an amazing toy! First, you have to understand that this is an app based lego building experience, meaning, you MUST use device with app capabilities to build and play with this toy. Although, the building itself is not overly challenging in comparison to other Star Wars Lego kits I have done before, it is somewhat complex. I would recommend this for 4th grader, who are comfortable with computers/phones, and up. But once you get going, this is so much fun. The droids are so cool and they can be built individually, but they all share one boost hub. This is the perfect gift for a star wars fan or anyone interested in robots. It is such a fun building experience.I highly recommend this and think its worth the cost. I think this is a good mix of technology and hands on for kids around 10 and up. It took my ten year old son a couple hours to build all three droids. He just loves them. Nice Christmas present for sure! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Easy to follow instructions for this novice dad and his 6 y/o. Takes a few hours to assemble, but a fun process. Really like the instructions.Son loves controlling R2D2 with the app and all the sounds and lights that go along with him. Out 10 month old beagle is less sure of his love -).Only concern is the ability to move on floors. Kitchen tile floor is a no-go. Our hardwood floors are questionable in spots. On both surfaces R2 falls down ALOT, the slightest bump sends him over. Will try him on our cement cellar floors this weekend, I expect that will be an improvement as there are no bumps. All in all, fun toy and app looks pretty neat (son is having fun discovering what he can do with R2 in the app). Will being building the other two robots this weekend, and trying to connect the lego remote control to R2 as well.

Once we got AAA batteries and the app installed, we were ready to go! I really liked the animation in the app and how it played out like an interactive story. The 3D instructions were awesome too! I, like other reviewers, would have liked a hard copy of the instructions and pieces included, but my son didn’t seem to mind. (This 5 brick rating is solely from the perspective of a 10 yr old). Unlike other sets, the fun doesn’t stop after building! A kid will have hours and hours of fun with coding and discovering what these droids can do! The app and coding program is geared towards kids. They are the target audience and they love it! Adults like step by step instructions for how the app works and what all the little buttons do before they start (smh).Kids just play and discover!!

My 13 year old son absolutely loves Legos and even more so Star Wars. When I gave this to him, he was ecstatic. You have to download the app in order to build, program, and control the droids. I sat with him just to make sure he didn't need any help but he was able to navigate through the app to build the droids. I think some of the videos could be a little faster when building instead of so long. I think I was a little more excited than him to see them built and in motion. The droids traveled nicely on the hard wood floor, but not so much on the rugs or carpet. I really love that the programming step was a learning experience aside from the fun of it all. We both like R2-D2 the best as his detail was made just as the movies.[This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
