I know nothing about whiskey. Never liked the stuff.....then a couple if years ago someone gave me a drop of the Laphroaig 10 year old and I changed my mind. I didn't know what 'peaty' meant until this was explained to me - but I now know I LOVE peaty whiskey!I'n currently buying the Select as can't afford the 10 year old. Yes, it's less peaty, but still smooth and delicious straight out the bottle with no mixer or ice. In fact this is probably smoother than the 10 year old, but does deliver less of a smoky wallop - but enough to keep me very happy :)Incidentally I've now tried a couple of other whiskeys describing themselves as 'peaty' on the supermarket blurb (one was a Talisker)and neither tasted the slightest bit smoky to my admittedly unrefined palate and both needed ginger ale to make them drinkable. This stuff goes down like honey by comparison. However i'll continue to treat myself to the more expensive 10 year old Laphroaig for Christmas & birthdays and may even branch out to explore some other peaty whiskeys if and when affordable.

Wow, I can’t give this five stars because there are better whisk(e)ys, at this price point though, this is excellent. So it depends on where you are in the whiskey journey, if brand new then it’s going to be a learning curve with some unique flavours and if you are well experienced then it might not be peaty enough. If it’s your first introduction to Islay whiskies and you are ready for it, then go for it. It’s got the briney, Smokey, iodide type funk, but not enough that it’s off putting. Go for it. If you are wanting to register with the Friends of Laphroig then be careful. They have stopped accept the codes and I simply cannot find the option to upload a receipt so have emailed them.I’m awaiting a response and if it pans out ok, I will update.

If you're new to what I like to class as the 'classic' Islay single malt, jumping right into the deep end and taking a wee snifter of Laphroig 10 y/o might be a wee bit overwhelming on the 'ol senses as it can be roundly summed up as tasting a bit 'medicinal' and intensely peaty and smoky. This 'select' Laphroig however is a bit more easy to get yourself acquainted with as it dials the peat and smoke back a little, but still delivers a pleasant dose of that Islay character to the senses - just in a more subtle fashion. On a cold night it will warm you right to the core if you take it straight, but it's just as nice with a dod of ice cold water in the warmer months and it's generally a very, very nice whisky to cradle and enjoy.

I am a real fan of Islay malts and I do like the strong peaty taste of Laphroaig 10 year old, but there are times when I feel that it is a little overpowering. I managed to bag a bottle of this at a local supermarket for £25 when it was on offer. I am so glad I got it, it has a much nicer finish than the 10 year old.First thing I noticed is that it was a slightly lighter colour in the glass than the 10yo. It still retains the peaty taste and smell, but it is far softer and more rounded on the palate. The iodine like qualities of the 10yo are not as pronounced and it isn't quite as harsh in the back of the throat. If you are a fan of Laphroaig you will definitely like this.

Sadly I am unlikely to get a sip of this very pleasant whisky as I have purchased this bottle for my nephew who lives some distance away from me.A single malt with a nice rounded taste - I am no expert on whisky, but I do like a small glass from time to time and generally go for quality over quantity. I am sure that the purists will disagree, but I have taken this spirit with a "couble measure" over two cubes of ice and that suits me just fine.I do like some more, but should my nephew return the compliment for my birthday (I doubt it) a tear of gratitude may be seen to form and possibly run down my cheek.

Took a gamble on this looking to treat myself to a nice bottle of whisky for a change. Writing this as I drink it for the 1st time.. I am an occassional pipe smoker and this tastes just like Mac Baren Dark Flake tobacco full of perique and dark aged black cavendish... would go perfectly with any dark old english style.. and will try just that.. Full on peat smoke flavour with a touch of brown sugar and citrus zest. Delicious! and pretty smooth.. needs no more than 1 tbs water if you must.. not ice as will dilute too much I think. If you like bold rich flavour in your whisky you will not be disappointed.

I love it! The perfect combination of all of my favourites into one very smooth whisky - the Quarter Cask, PX Cask, Triple Wood & Ten-Year Old Casks all provide different maturation styles & oaks. If you like an Islay that is sweeter and more smokey than peaty then you will also like this. Very affordable, appropriate for everyday drinking, no need to add any water and there is a surprising amount of heat. I would definitely recommend to anyone who has never tried Laphroaig before or smoky Islay's in general as it is not overpowering.

Got this for £23. So let’s be real that is nothing for whisky. Not a fan of peaty whiskys and Laphroaig is peat. However this select barrel does the right balance for someone who wants to experience and try peaty smoke whisky. It’s got the TCP element to it which is Laphroaigs way, but it’s not over bearing. It’s very tolerable without overwhelming your taste buds. Overall for £23 it’s a no brainer. If you don’t like it, you know to stay away from peat and I would imagine single malt sherry casks will be more up your Avenue.

This was available on an Amazon deal for a great price (£18.99) so I jumped at the chance. If you're not keen on Laphroaig 10 year old because of the intense smoke and iodine/TCP taste, you'll find this bottle (the Select) is much smoother. Although it has the character of a Laphroiag, the harshness has been taken down quite a bit. I have really enjoyed all Laphroaig whiskies but my wife much prefers this over the 10 year old.For that price though, I couldn't refuse.

When it's on offer this is a bargain.I have Laphroaig 10 and the Quarter Cask, and I have Talisker 10, Bowmore 12, Lagavulin 16, Ardmore Legacy, Ardmore 10 and the Aldi Smokey Islay so have plenty to compare it with ... both cheap and not quite so cheap - and it holds it 's own perfectly well in that company. It's still definitely a Laphroaig but is easy going and not extreme.I honestly thought it to be just fine.

...you like this kind of thing, and you really won't know until you try it. The most Islay of Islay distilleries, now available at around £25 per bottle. Is it as good as their 10 y/o or Quarter Cask? Not, but it's very close indeed, and much cheaper. If you've never tried an Islay whisky before, this is the perfect entry point as it's a wee hair less 'full on' than most of the similarly-priced alternatives.

A great tasting whisky for any collection and a definite must for anyone wanting to delve into smokey peaty whisky without being put off by some of the more robust flavour bottles. The smokiness and peat have been dialled back in this dram, but it is still there, and there is a sweetness on the palate too, I'd say it's very well rounded and isn't a harsh whisky either. For the price, it's well worth buying.

Received this as a Christmas gift from my wife. As a relatively new convert, initial reactions from my Dad and Father-in-Law were that it was too peaty. I do take it with a generous amount of water, but I did enjoy this. As I am trying to educate my palate, previous bottle was a Macallan Gold, I am trying various other regions. Today's purchase was a Highland Park 12yo...

I love Laphroaig 10. Laphroaig Select offers something slightly different. Not quite as peaty, a great introduction for the inexperienced to heavily peated malt. It's not as complex as 10, but hey, it cost £22.99 including delivery so it's excellent value as opposed to 10yo at £33-35 so a dram you can enjoy more regularly without breaking the bank.

This one gets better second time around. On first try it isn't the most appealing but once acquainted to this whiskey it is as good as can get for the money. On return you realise you missed the peaty and flavorful nectar. Once accustomed the sweeter notes are much more noticeable. I hate adding anything to this including ice.
