I purchased JW Double Black on Prime Day and got it at what I consider to be a fantastic price. I've only opened the bottle recently after holding off for a few months. I must state from the start that I'm not a whiskey connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination. I've grown up enjoying the more sweeter bourbons as opposed to scotch though I have an appreciation of the latter. I won't comment on the JW brand as it's clearly one of the most famous and well known whiskey brands in the world.Double Black is a blended scotch. The bottle arrived in a JW box which was itself packaged inside a very thick solid Amazon carton which looked like it could easily handle a few knocks and bumps! The bottle looks classy and stands out among the other bottles in my bar collection. The whiskey differs from the JW Black Label in that it contains more Islay whisky and casks that have been heavily charred, giving a more intense depth of flavour with a greater smokiness. The whiskey has a lovely smoothness and is smoother than the Black and Gold labels. I've sampled the whiskey neat, on the rocks, with water and soda water and enjoyed it each way - on the rocks was probably my favourite however! It's an excellent drink if you have friends round and want a classy sipping drink or indeed if you just want a more mature drink in the evening after work.

I am far from being a whisky connoisseur and in fact, apart from diluting it with a piece of ice, I prefer to leave it in as much of its unadulterated state as I possibly can; primarily to enjoy the flavour but that flavour needs to be intense for me rather than heavily diluted. My favourite I'm afraid comes from Ireland, but this nice whisky pushes it close. I note all of the comments regarding the smokiness etc, but for me, it is put simply a very nice, smooth and very palatable drink at the end of a day, particularly nice to accompany a cup of strong black coffee after dinner - many may think that this would detract from the flavour, but for me,they compliment one another well and therefore I can only recommend both the whisky and the habit. The crisp and bitter coffee just seems to prepare my palate for the smoothness of the whisky, although if you force me, I will take the whisky without the coffee at a pinch.I purchase mine via Amazon and enjoy a regular supply at a competitive price. Certainly one to keep in the cupboard for very good friends, or perhaps not; one for "sorry I have the grouse, or you might like a drop of Bells that I got for £10 from Sainsbury, let's see what you think........."

I bought this in the black friday sale alongside a few other whiskys. I bought this specifically as I was curious over what smokey whiskys would taste like and the reviews made me curious. Therefore first of all. I will say I think after trying them, Smokey whisky's have become my new favourite type of whisky. On opening this and smelling the contents you get a very strong overwhelming smokey smell from it. But taking a sip you get a regular vanilla flavoured taste with no smokiness whatsoever to it. To be honest I was thinking to myself what is going on here for a moment as the smell was very deceptive as the smell was smokeyness. But the taste had none whatsoever, this was until a few seconds in.Then suddenly a strong burning smokey aftertaste hits you hard.Overall this is a very nice whisky and I am pleased I bought it. But it is not a patch on the Highland Park Viking Tribe I also bought. That whisky is incredibly smooth smokey whisky with no burn to it whatsoever. I will say to mention it in this review. I also bought the regular Johnny Walker black. That one has no smokeiness smell or taste to it whatsoever. It also has no burn. So if you are after a smokey whisky. Then get the double black.

Granted there are different tastes in single malt but if you're a peaty, smoky flavour person you really need to try this! I've been drinking Laphroaig 10yr old & cask strength for some time, then our son bought me a bottle of this as he knew I had a taste for JW 12yr old, but this Double Black just blew my socks off! So its blended, & Laphroaig is a single, well I defy anyone to tell the difference apart from the cheaper price of the Double Black by far! Oh my its yummy! Ok i'm a Sassenach & to top it all I come from the smoke so theres plenty of you English out there to compare with & other peeps from around this old world of ours who have a taste for the amber nectar.there may well be over 100 whiskies in bonnie Scotland but im telling you now, you've just gotta try Double Black, but beware you've gotta be a man to take it. After the 4th or 5th one give it a write up, if you can still see straight lol & also tell Johnnie Walkers what a great customer service they have! (way above Laphroaig's.)

I purchased this whiskey for someone else. But as with the best laid plans. My friend was unable to sample this drink. And since i am not a huge fan of whiskey,I was undecided as to what i should do with it. (I prefer Southern Comfort).Anyway I decided to have a sample.Well I was very pleasantly surprised. This tasted nothing like the harsh tasting Johnnie Walker that I have drank in the past. This drink still as a bite, but it is less harsh and a lot smoother.I first had a glass of this whiskey without any mixer. And the rest of the whiskey I added a splash of coke. The rest of this whiskey I drank over a period of ten evenings. And I found it to be a very warming relaxing drink.I guess connoisseursof this drink will say That I ruined it with a splash of coke,But each to their own.Would I purchase this whiskey again? Well to be honest yes I would.More so if I fancied a change from my usual tipple.

I'm a fan of blended whisky... I prefer it to single malts. There, I said it, let the insults commence! But seriously - While I've always enjoyed Black Label (standard) I'd rather have a bottle of Red Label in the house, it's cheaper and has a bit more character. If I go through a quarter of a bottle in half an evening I don't feel like I'm pouring money down my throat - and i don't feel that the standard Black Label offers much over Red.Double Black, on the other hand just has more of an intensity than the normal Black - it's a little fuller, a bit oily, a bit more oaky/charred tasting while still keeping the drinkable/sweet/smooth taste that Johnnie Walker is known for.Green label has more bite/complexity and Blue Label is (obviously)far better (although not really worth the price) but this is, in my opinion the second best whisky in JWs range.

I'm a single malt man, but I adore the Johnnie Walker range and either default to red label, black, or double black. Although I enjoy red (because it's tasty and cheap) and black (because it's still quite cheap), I find that JW double black is the type I prefer in their range. It's a little more expensive, but:1) It's just as easy to drink as red or black label2) It has more complexity, with more smoke and peat.3) It's just more enjoyable. For yourself, i'd recommend this even if you don't normally like blends - as Johnnie Walker's is quite unique. As a gift for someone else, this is something a little more premium which would, generally, suit anyone who enjoys whiskey. Most the whiskey drinkers I know wouldn't turn down Johnnie Walker's if offered, despite it being an "inferior" blend.

Smokey Blend that's more than just a gimmick.Had this at the Bar on board an Emirates A380 on the advice of the Cabin Crew and I'm glad I did. Being a Single Malt drinker I just fancied a long Aperitif before dinner so had it with a splash of Ginger. This blended well with the Smokey (almost Peaty but it's not) flavour & added a bit more sweetness too. This does not have the antiseptic Peaty flavour of the Islay or Island Whisky such as Laphroaig, Cao Ila or Jura but more mellow and easy on the pallet Smokiness.A nice Blended Whisky to add to any collection that is pleasant with Water, Ginger, on the Rocks or just neat...

The bottle I received didn't have the plastic insert that came with previous bottles of the Double Black I have had. Some people hated the plastic regulator device but I personally liked it as it seemed to pour a lot more cleanly into glasses once you got the hang of how it works. Nevertheless, this is a good go-to whisky for me for when I want to enjoy something fancy but not too fancy. Whisky appreciation is very subjective, so I'm not going to go on about tasting notes.... To put it plainly, it's a decent, very drinkable smokey whisky - good for something "light" or if you're new to smokey whisky.

This is an excellent whisky but does not represent good value for money over a single Islay malt. From its taste, it seems to have been blended mostly from Islay malts and has a full and distinctive smoky flavour typical of these Islay single malts. The trouble is, it is priced similarly and so does not represent value for money. For this price, you would be better off working out your preferred Islay malt for the money and going for that one instead. To my taste buds, it tastes like Laphroaig Quarter Cask and I would rather purchase the latter and so get "the real deal".

Having never tried a Johnnie Walker blend before I was very suprised at how smooth and balanced this whisky tastes. I have only really tried a handful of whiskies and all of which have been single malts, mostly either Islays or sherried speysides. As this is supposed to be comprised of a mix of whiskies, one of which is Caol Ila I decided to give it a go. It was well worth it and a serious contender to any single malt within it's price range. Ok, it lakes the complexity of some malts, but it's smooth and very drinkable. I will definitely be coming back to this one.

This is not like writing a review on a plastic gadget or an electronic gizmo. With those it’s easy to be objective they either work or they don’t And are either well made or not .This is purely a matter of taste . There are hundreds of single malts people rave about that I dislike .Trying to be objective if you like a Smokey and smooth whiskey you will not find a cheaper one.I thought it was so smooth it actually felt syropy.I am sure not to everyone’s taste as demonstrated by the different reviews but I love it.As the French would say: à chacun son goût !

I do occasionally buy good quality alcohol drinks when I hold parties or birthdays at home and I like to have an occasional glass after work. This whiskey is definitely excellent and from a well known brand. Actually it is quite hard to find similar bottles at supermarkets sonI was quite happy to find it here.Taste is smooth and silky. Leaving very pleasant aftertaste. I am not a great expert on whiskeys but this one definitely to my taste. The box it comes with is very good for gifting and looks stylish. Pleased with my purchase.

This is a nice deep amber smokey whiskey. I am not normally a blend drinker, preferring the Islay single malts. This does well, with a good full palate of burnt oak on top of salt laden spirit in the Islay tradition, but it falls short of those great malts. The explosion on the palate is a little muted and the linger a little shorter than you would hope for. It won't disappoint in robustness of flavour and has some true complexities in there, but it doesn't quite earn that 5th star in giving the total package and depth.

I’ve become a big fan of bourbon over scotch with the exception of lagavulin 16 year old, so when I drink a scotch I like it to have a bite with a smoky finish. I’d read a review for this and fancied giving it a go and then it come up on prime day at half the price. I’m really pleased I did and will buy this again at full price. This double black is spot on. It has beautiful intensity with a lovely smoky burn as it goes down. If you like lagavulin 16, you’ll enjoy this.
