JBL’s recent line of portable speakers are a real hit and this one in particular trumps the lineup as well as surpassing most other portable speakers in this price point. I was originally in the market for the UE Megaboom which was said to offer powerful sound in a reasonably small package. After watching and reading a multitude of online reviews I decided to take a look at buying the JBL Xtreme, which was said to have everything the UE Megaboom had and more – and they weren’t wrong!I can safely say that these speakers are more than powerful enough for casual listening and will easily fill a large room with sound. The sound is full, very bass driven and loud. The bass, at times, is almost overpowering, but this is definitely a bonus for me. The sound of most portable speakers out there are going to be coloured in some way, be that bass heavy, treble heavy or just tinny – the JBL’s focus on bass and with the two passive radiators means that your songs will make the ground shake. The speaker performs well with most genres of music and spoken tracks, the best of which (due to its bass) being Electronic and Hip Hop and I’ve heard absolutely zero distortion at full volume, which given how loud this thing can go, is very impressive. Some reviews have said that the treble is so drowned out on these speakers that they opted to use the JBLs linking feature to pair with a Charge 3 or Flip 3 to make the treble stand out and that it was almost unlistenable otherwise. I completely disagree with this. Highs and mids are definitely clear enough for most listeners tastes and the speaker performs perfectly well by itself. Some points in its favour are its big battery. I’ve had this for about a month and a half now and under light use for that time (Maybe about 30mins a day average) I’ve only had to charge it once. It’s ability to charge other devices through its USB ports is a nice feature, although one I haven’t really used yet. Some downsides are its weight – for a ‘portable’ speaker it’s a little on the clunky side and while you can throw this into a rucksack or carry it using the provided straps, it’s not the lightest speaker out there. But given how loud and big the sound is this is a small compromise. Another downside – and this isn’t entirely expected of JBL – is that it doesn’t come with any form of protection (case, sleeve, cloth etc.) - and while I fully understand why that wouldn’t be included in the box, they don’t have a protective case for this on their website to purchase separately, which I found disappointing as they do for their smaller products. The speaker does on the whole seem durable enough not to necessarily need one but the passive radiators on the side appear fragile and I would rather keep this in a hard case to put it in my rucksack than throw it in there unprotected. I suppose I’ll try get a third party neoprene one off of Amazon. I can’t say for certain that there aren’t better Bluetooth speakers in this price range, but this one definitely does not disappoint. It’s not going to be replacing my Studio Monitors anytime soon, but as a portable speaker that you can take to the beach, the park or by the swimming pool it’s definitely a real winner.

I always wait a while to do any review, and as it's now over 12 months since I purchased this speaker, I feel the time is about right. So the not so good points.Well it's the overall design of the unit, and contributes to a couple of issues. The two bass panels either side of the speaker are exposed. THIS is potentially a disaster waiting to happen, I have had many friends pick the speaker up to have a look at it, and on ALL of these occasions I have warned them not to put their fingers on the inside of the sides so as to protect the speaker panels(Bass Radiators) from damage.I guess I am overly protective of the speaker because I am not sure exactly how they would cope when being picked up by the sides and some fingers push the panels in too hard(they do move when music is being played),so a simple and neat protective panel in front of them would surely do the job of protecting them? Then there's the design flaw at the rear of the speaker. It is a little flawed in that the charge/connection ports are a quite difficult to access due to the tightness of the zip closure point, and also the fact it's a little awkward to see the writing on the cover, corresponding to the relevant connection point within, a slight grumble from someone who's eyesight is probably not as good as it used to be.The good points.Well the sound is by far the nicest of all it's competitors by far. The level of clarity is perhaps not quite Bose, but the bass tone and far higher volume capabilities far out way the bose in every other department and please the ear without fail. The bluetooth is easy to connect and the range is pretty good. The battery life seems to be excellent, with a charge lasting for weeks with some daily use.I love to hear music through speakers that can deliver, and my home system is a combination of Yamaha Amplifier with Kef Speakers. It took me years to complete my system, with lots of changes and re-thinks. So when I decided to buy a portable speaker I did a lot of research and tested many different speakers so that I could make the right decision first time. I listen to a wide range of music, so I needed a speaker that could deliver the many different sounds I like.My recommendation is to have a playlist on your device and take that to your local store and play them all. I did, and that's why I bought this speaker. It is excellent, and the only reason it has 4 stars, is the access point issue and speaker vulnerability.

I bought my Xtreme in September 2015. I was thrilled with the sound quality of my Xtreme. However over the weeks I realised it wasn't lasting as long on battery power and finally it was down to just 6 minutes!!!!! :o I did some research and found this was a problem a number people suffered with. I then did research to see if there was a speaker of similar spec with same sound quality and had to conclude the Xtreme was THE best (yes, I concede that is a matter of opinion, but I suggest anyone looking to buy a speaker does their research). So in October 2016, I returned the JBL to the shop in the UK where I bought it, and got a replacement. When I connected it to the JBL app which was on my phone,it began an update. This is something I have never seen the original speaker do, despite connecting it to the JBL app numerous times. Then the speaker turned off (or I turned it off). When I turned it on again, the app displayed a message telling me that my speaker was up to date. This is also something I never saw on the original speaker. One other thing I think is different is that on the original I wasn't very aware of what was behind the fabric of the speaker, but on this one, to the right side of the speaker (level with the orange JBL label), I can see a black shiny area behind the material that wasn't present in the original. What I am getting at is that I am seeing differences in this new speaker and hope it indicates that the original faulty issue of JBL Xtremes are now history and that the new ones haven't got the problem. I will report back with any notable developments but have high hopes the problem on the original is non existent in the new speakers.

I finally decided to replace my old battery powered portable speakers (ready for the summer). I love my JBL Xtreme, there are some great features which come in really handy whilst travelling/out and about, including phone/mp3 charging, handsfree options and resistance to the elements (particularly important during British bank holidays). It connects quickly and seamlessly via Bluetooth but has physical source inputs too.The speaker has performed well during (and survived) rainy BBQs, cycle rides, trips away and multiple beach sessions. The build quality feels robust enough to take the Xtreme most places and the battery life has been absolutely outstanding! If you are all about the bass then youwon't be disappointed - this speaker packs a real low-end punch but not at the expense of some clear, rich and balanced mids and highs. Some reviewers have complained that the Xtreme is a bit too bottom heavy but I have found this useful in some outdoor scenarios and most mp3s/phones give you some EQ adjustment options, which might come in handy if you are using the speaker in different acoustic environments.I haven't had the opportunity to wirelessly link the Xtreme to other JBL speakers yet (this feature interests me) but I have had some success with some apps which have enabled me to link up my iPhone and iPad in order to simultaneously play music through my indoor stereo system and my Xtreme speaker outside (great for BBQs/gatherings).Thanks JBL for my summer soundtracks!

Awesome speaker near perfect...I own a few pairs of hi res headphones ...hi res dap etc..and was looking for a hi res speakers but everyone I tried lacked bass/low end ( come on guys sort it out) although detailed. This doesn't quite have hi res detail but the overall sound is very very good! in fact the quality of detail from a blutooth speaker is excellent....best of probably heard and I tried about 10 different ones before settling for this. Now why I gave it 4 stars .The bass is too boomy I have also owned a jbl charge 2+ and in my opinion the tuning I perfect! Although clearly the extreme has better sound quality.A lot of reviews and other customers have commented on this .Come on jbl your speaker is amazing but you just need to take the boom down a notch.Update please please pleaseBut all said and done it is a great speaker and near perfect overall.Until I hear a hi res speaker with proper low end that is.

I have had my Xtreme for a few of weeks now and I'm very impressed. Set up is easy and the sound quality is fantastic for such a small box. It easily fills a decent sized room with pretty well balanced sound and even keeps itself fairly well controlled at high volumes. The battery life is also very good and though it takes a while to charge fully, it seems to go on and on and on before needing another charge - I just hope it goes on performing this well. It is a bit on the large and heavy side (which might be an important factor for some people) but it suggest to me that it is probably stuffed with good quality components like decent speakers and a hefty battery. It also looks good!Pity you don't make a nice protective carry case for it.

I purchased a re-certified unit direct from JBL. It arrived packed like a new one which was a nice touch. The device itself sounds great; sure its not going to replace your home music system, pumping out a gazillion watts, but what it will d, is give you a pleasant sounding portable Bluetooth speaker that's capable of making itself heard when you need it to. It sure beats those tinny tranny's and cheap Bluetooth speakers that struggle to sound half decent at any volume and sound terrible the more you crank them up. The JBL will give you a fuller rounder sound at all volumes and the battery lasts for hours on a full charge, enabling you to take it anywhere, even next to the kids in the pool, because it's splash proof.

Build quality cannot be faulted. Feels and looks like a premium speaker and so it should for the price. Sound quality is very smooth and balanced with no distortion. What I think could be improved is the max volume, it seems like it doesn’t get as loud as the xtreme 1 which I also have. Also there is slight bass reduction at max volume which I don’t like but it’s very minimal. I pair this to my Jbl Boombox and it works perfectly! they sound absolutely amazing together. I would recommend this product to people who like sound quality over loudness.

Amazing Sound! Tried them out outside in the sun i closed my eyes and for a couple of minutes it feelt like i'm at home and i'm listenig to music on my supreme home audio systems, i opened my eyes again and recognized that i'm outside, no supreme home sound system, just this JBL Xtreme 1000% recommend! Buy it and you'll love it don't be scared aboout the size that's realy not a problem, yes it is bigger than normal portable speakers but it is still compact and the sound sorry to tell again but it is absolute amazing!

20.10.2017

I now have two of these speakers, and i am so satisfied. Now the price isn’t too bad compared to other speakers, but this is the cheapest and effective way to build your own hi fi system, the sound is truly amazing, people say it’s too big but I don’t think you get sound like this out of a smaller speaker with out spending hundreds of pounds, I love it how the speaker is water proof to an extent but I would highly recommend 100% amazing and pairing them both I never knew it was that easy, one click is all it takes

For a bluetooth speaker the clarity is unmatched the bass, treble and vocals standout individually. Zero muffled sounds even on old songs the crisp sounds are something I didn't expect. The bass hugs everyone in the room. Ive had many speakers and this is by far the best sounding and loudest.Looks are beautiful looks premium no gimmicks of lights or bells or whistles the only thing that made me laugh a bit is the bottle opener on the strap provided overall the best speaker on the market.

4.1.2018

Im impressed with the sound in this speaker, however its inability to play audio whilst using a chrome cast to watch netflix is disappointing. When watching netflix the TV's speakers override the Bluetooth connection. So although the Jbl xtreme appears to be connected to the device, it won't emit any sound. Leaving you to watch your favourite shows though the TV's tinny speakers Disappointing as it's the main reason I bought the this speaker was to use it as a form of surround sound.

25.3.2019

Sound quality is amazing, it is very clear and has good bass. The built quality follows JBS high standards and the volume is higher than I will ever need inside any room. I bought the refurbished version so the value/money was really good. My only comment is that this speaker is not very portable, or not as much as the Charge and the Flip. If you plan on walking around with it I would recommend getting the Charge instead, which has a bit less power but less than half of the size and weight.

JBL eXtreme 2 is really worth your every penny! The sound is SO clear it's like a perfectly calm pond with no ripples - the bass is SO overwhelmingly STRONG that 30-40% volume is more than enough for an ExtremeHome experience* (*when playing official, clear tracks) Basically a cinema experience where you want it. JBL Xtrm2 connects up to 100 other JBL speakers, for example connected with sisters speaker, effects are priceless. You want quality? You found it. Water proof, 15hr battery.
