As a current owner of a large Sony speaker that has outstanding quality of sound I looked forward to hearing the quality of sound from a smaller speaker. It was well packaged & thankfully easily opened without the need for scissors or a knife. It came packaged with instructions, charging cable & strap to attach to the speaker. Even without looking at the instructions the speaker was paired to my iPhone within 20 seconds, very impressive. It is a well made device, it looks strong enough to take day to day abuse & the little touches that make all the difference between a quality product & a cheaper alternative are evident. Rubber feet,a rubber cover for the charging socket that fits perfectly & discreet light built into the grille of the speaker for Bluetooth are all nice touches. I chose a podcast from my phone & instantly it was played back by the speaker. Sound quality from such a small speaker is first class with no distortion when the volume is turned up playing back my favourite music. Volume / pause controls can be operated from the speaker or from your device & they too have a quality feel to them. If a call comes in whilst in playback mode it cuts off when you answer the call & resumes playing when the call is completed perfectly. I have yet to charge it up but if it is anything like my larger speaker, battery life should be excellent. The speaker is small enough to carry around, ideal for travelling & suitably water resistant in the shower. The speaker is ideal for use in various rooms in the house & for travel, I would recommend it. Gripes? My only criticism is the generic instructions using illustrations rather than text. I can see why it’s done as it can be understood in various languages but I would prefer written instructions. Given that you already supply written instructions on the subject of water resistance would the costs be any higher to integrate written instructions on how to set the speaker up? Starting with the plastic packaging, at first I thought it might be difficult to open, that thought was wrong it was vey simple to open. As with all Sony products there are numerous instruction sheets in multiple languages, however the main instructions as to how to operate and charge the SRS-XB01 came on a very simple sheet, with very easy to follow instructions and pictures. The actual unit is tiny but so very simple to set up, within minutes I had connected to my iPhone, via bluetooth and the music was flowing. I was able to stay connected in every room in the house with no interruption of service. For such a small piece of kit the sound quality was amazing, but by being small it was easy to pop in a pocket or move around.Added to that it is water resistant so great to take into the bathroom.Charging the unit is also very simple via the supplied micro/USB cable so no expensive batteries to buy - charging was also very quick and the unit holds its charge well.My only slight reservation was that the four control buttons on the top of the speaker are the same colour blue as the rest of the unit, they are however slightly raised. The buttons concerned are fast forward. bluetooth connection and up/down volume. It would be helpful if the buttons were of a different colour to help those of us who are more mature and whose eyesight might not be as good as it used to be. The performance of this small speaker is well above my expectations. I purchased it on the back of a recommendation in the January edition of "Which" and I have not been disappointed. It is well made and as with most Sony products is very well designed and a joy to use. The sound is very good and well balanced, with excellent voice reproduction. It is easy to link via Bluetooth and will store up to 8 different links so that it can seamlessly connect to 8 different sources (one at a time). for those who prefer, it will connect via 3.5mm jack plug. It charges using a standard micro USB connection from any standard 5v USB power supply, the USB connection lead is provided.Although I have not used the feature,it can be used as a hands free device while connected to a phone. Its volume is limited as you would expect from the speaker of this size, but is perfectly adequate for what it claims to deliver, providing a good sound at adequate volume for an average bedroom/kitchen. The "Extra Bass" is a design feature rather than a switchable function and does ensure the balanced tone, but if you are looking for bass heavy rock delivery, then this is beyond its capabilities. However, for general music and voice reproduction, it is an excellent, good value small portable speaker, that promises to be robust and reliable.

This just arrived and I thought I would check it out to see if it works and everything is OK.I purchased this to use with my Kindle Fire HD 8 which I am using as a control center with Alexa.Well, I've kept it on while I work because the sound quality is incredible for such a small device.I have gone through a few portable Bluetooth speakers and they are usually poor quality, lightweight and sound tinny. This does not. Yet again, Sony hasn't disappointed. My last Bluetooth speaker was a Bush one for the same price and while it was OK, the sound quality was terrible. The Sony SRS-XB01 has great quality and the bass boost is balanced perfectly.I'm currently listening to Lana Del Ray on Amazon Music and I can hear everything on the track. The device itself is noticeably well built. It's got some weight to it and isn't flimsy, plus there's a lot of rubber for grip, shock absorption and audio dissipation. There are also rubber grips for it to sit and keep it from slipping. The controls are also made of rubber and feel very responsive while a rubber flap protects the USB port and jack. This is a very well made product with the kind of sound quality found in the more expensive JBL portable speakers. An excellent alternative if you don't have cash to burn.

I have been using this bluetooth speaker for a couple of weeks now. First impressions were that it's so small it couldn't possibly be of any quality. I was wrong about that. Firstly I connected it to my computer to see how it would rate against my more expensive wired speakers. Via bluetooth it connected first time without any setup issues.I was surprised by how clear the sound was, punchy bass and bright treble and compered favourably with my wired setup.Next I wanted to find out it's range. I tried it in every room in the house and to my surprise there was no loss of sound, next I tried it in the garden and managed to get a fair distance with it. My favourite use was having it on in the kitchen when I was preparing meals. It is small enough to not get in the way and no chance of loosing it due to the bright colour it came in. It is easy to control the volume with biggish buttons on the top and loud enough to be heard over any background noise.Recharging was easy by plugging it into the USB port on my computer.Over all I was impressed by how easy and portable this small unit is and I can see it replacing my wired computer system just for its ease of use. I bought this little speaker for listening to my music in the garden. I have a pond and dogs... so, you would think I would have had the sense to place this speaker well away from both... I didn't! I placed it on a ledge near the water a my hyper fluffs... poured a glass of wine and zoned out to my summer beats (not quite sure if I had already consumed a vino ot two prior to doing this). So I'm humming away and PLOP! Yes, the little speaker dropped into the body of water and it took me at least 15 seconds from where I sat to retrieve it. I was convinced it was all over for this little guy... as I had left the charger access flap open.I wrapped it up lovingly in kitchen roll and placed it on the side in my kitchen with a view to dispose of it in a dignified way the next day. Next day came and I took it from it's paper shroud and was about to place it in the plastic tomb of the broken and unwanted when I noticed a little glimmer of light... a blue one to be precise, on the cube. Tentatively, I reconnected my blue tooth and TA' DAH!! It was alive and kicking. I was amazed. So, it's totally waterproof. And that fat lady carries on singing..... love this little speaker. A true survivor!

At a budget price, I must say it's a bit of a bargain. I also have a Bose Soundlink Mini, and this was much more expensive and sounded much better, HOWEVER, was always a bit worried about taking that one to work and losing it! So bought this little Sony, for just £19, it's tiny in comparison, light weight, sounds wonderful for its size, and other people have also complimented my Sony speaker at how nice it sounds for such a tiny speaker! Blue tooth is easily tuned, link it to my smart phone so I can listen to radio stations with DAB radio quality, this works pretty well when driving around! I also plug a little radio in via the 3.5mm jack, and I still have a cassette Walkman, and a mini disc player that I also plug in to the Sony! Works a treat, and at £19, if you lose it, it's not such a big deal! Doesn't sound as good as a Bose Soundlink, but it's not bad and it's robust, great for personal use or in among a few mates, ample sound at max vol with minimum distortion, a little distortion at hi vol, but not bad! It's water resistant, so it's no problem if it gets rained on, or it's near to your bath and gets splashed! Just get one, you know it makes sense!

This is a great little speaker with long battery life and much better quality than your phone speaker. It's being used everywhere around the house, you simply can't beat the portability of this thing. This speaker is small fits in the palm of your hand. That's what makes it really portable, but that's exactly what takes away the oomph that some other reviewers mention. This is not a speaker for a party. Use it with 4 people chatting in the room and you can easily overpower it. This speaker is great adding some music to your moments when you're alone or need to be quiet and it's great at doing that.I find it extremely counterproductive when people give this a 2/3-star rating blaming that it's smaller than they thought,or prompt you to buy something bigger or with more bass. Who's fault is it if you didn't read the dimensions or the specs? What exactly are you comparing this to? If you wanted a bigger speaker, more bass or had to spend 200 quid and not 19.97 that this thing costs, it's not this very speaker's fault. At this price you either get junk or quality that comes in small packages. Buy this speaker for what it's made for and enjoy!

I think the first thing I will say right away is how amazed I was at how BIG the sound is for such a small speaker! I and my family were incredibly surprised, to say the least. We use the speaker in the bathroom and due to it being a Water Resistant Wireless Bluetooth Speaker we were not at all worried about if it would get damaged. It was handy to be able to hang the item too. Colours wise, there are so many to choose from, I have the vibrant Green/Yellow option! Super easy to connect to using Bluetooth. It's incredibly lightweight so hanging it, to say a bicycle, a backpack or anything really, shouldn't cause any struggles. Handy buttons make it easy to control, such as volume and skipping tracks or even taking phone calls due to its built-in microphone. Another great use I found was hooking it up to a Laptop via an Aux cable to give my laptop better sound! Battery wise, a good 6 hours or more is easily achieved as advertised and it charges quickly too via USB cable. The performance of this small speaker is well above my expectations and is easy to recommend for all the above reasons! Sony are a name to conjure with and in the crowded speaker market it is the type of thing that may just give you the edge. The 'SRS-XB01' is a moderately priced speaker that packs a strong punch for its size. In form, it is a simple oval and does not shout out look at me like many speaker. Its leaves its talking to when you turn it on. It is a pretty seamless device that you can connect to your Bluetooth easily. You only really need to open a side compartment if you want to attach your device using usb or old school audio wire. It is great to see that it still has these options and has not gone wireless only.Sound wise it has a strong beat and you can tell it is bass heavy. I am yet to try putting water on it,but I imagine that a few splashes would be ok as it is a compact machine that has few edges for water to escape into. The battery life is long enough for an afternoon's picnic and charging it is a breeze when you get home. At the price I was not expecting the 'SRS-XB01' to be quite as good as it is, but Sony have managed to produce one of the best well priced speakers on the market that I have come across.

I bought this sony speaker to take on a 2 week visit to the USA. I already own a larger sony but as space and weight are at a premium for longer holidays decided to purchase XB01.It is very compact and will fit in the palm of your hand. I charges via a standard micro USB, a lead and charger most of us will already own. (unless you have an iPhone or pad)After reading the some of the other reviews, I note that some comments regarding bass. With a speaker the size of the XB01, there is no way you are going to get a big bass output so don't expect to get a floor shaking sound. Other people mention sound quality in their reviews.I have always had an issue with Bluetooth in that if you have volume high on your phone for example you could possibly be driving the speaker with a distorted sound. So getting a balance between the output of the device and volume of the speaker, to achieve a good quality of sound is a bit of a balancing act.I have no issues with the sound quality. What do you expect for less than £20???Can't comment on battery live as yet.As things stand, highly recommended

The speaker arrived safely, and the packaging was strong and kept the product free from damage. All accessories arrived including charge cable and wrist strap. The speaker was charged immediately, and was then connected via Bluetooth to a variety of devices, including an older Windows 10 PC, a new Windows 10 gaming machine, a Windows phone, an Ipad Pro, an iPhone 6s and an iPhone 5. All devices connected correctly, although there were two occasions of very brief signal drop out to the iPhone 6 and the older Windows PC. The only minor criticism was that, with the gaming machine, maximum volume was too low to give an immersive gaming experience but for all other normal uses (listening to music, youTube and other video sources) it was amazing. Playing the famous bass line (Formula 1) in The Chain by Fleetwood Mac produced great clarity of bass, which in such a tiny enclosure was phenomenal. In summary, this is a truly portable and powerful device in a tiny package. Well done Sony! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I've had the SRS-XB01 for a week and the 1st thing you notice is the sound quality, very clean the highs, lows and mids are not muddled together, the unit has two speakers the one in the back has a slight gap then the back plate to reflect the bass back, which is nice as I would place it by a wall to do the same thing (as I do with my SRS-X55), it's not super loud but for use in and around the house its more than enough. I like that I can use it in the shower as it is splashproof I put it on the windowsill and is fine. I don't play music out loud outside so I'm not sure how it would preform. My niece's use it when they are listening to YouTube they are 5 and 8 and they love it.I haven't played music on full volume for mor than a few minuets at a time when I'm using it but I get very close to the 3 hour play time.Likes, price, colour, sound quality, splashproof Dislikes, no party chain Overall for the price it's more than worth it. I’ve never got on that well with headphones so a small portable speaker was always going to appeal and this little box doesn’t disappoint. 1st off don’t be fooled by the ‘Extra Bass’ displayed so prominently on the packaging, a box this small is never going to warranty the description bass rich. That said the sound from this little box is much fuller than its size would lead you to expect, not at all the tinny little sound you may have expected. The added bonus is that for such a small box it is capable, when fed with a decent signal, of a respectable volume, not loud but definitely achieving a comfortable listening level. The sound is somewhat dependant on the surface it is on,sounding clearer and louder when on a hard reflective surface than on the carpet. It is particularly good when sat on the cistern in the bathroom, which is great because with this little box I can now have music while soaking in the bath! This is probably all the speaker most people need... unless it's two, the only down side is the light that indicates it's on is on the speaker side of the unit, it's incredibly bright, the speaker is very directional, turn it 180 degrees and it's like listening to a party in the next room which is all good for 90% ofthe time and for the price very, very good value but the fact that you want enjoy the sound from it in the dark, say, watching a film on your tablet in bed, it's hard to fall asleep with this kind of light, if I want to play a rain storm to help me drift off I need to cover it with a shirt or something and that affects the sound quality... I'm settling for a hit of tape but Sony, surely the money you spend on R&D comes up with solutions to this problem like... putting the LEDs inside the rubber protected charging area - the only time someone would really need to identify if it's on or off and if it's charging or not
