Speaking as someone who is entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, I previously viewed the Echo devices and Alexa with some scepticism about adopting a new smart system. Experience from a toe on the water with an Echo Dot bought on an Amazon special offer was however a revelation. Alexa turned out to be so easy to use and versatile and, before we knew it, we wanted to try smart lighting. The Echo Plus bundled with a Philips white Hue light seemed the ideal way to tray out the possibilities. The Echo Plus has a built in zigbee hub...what that means is that you don’t have to buy another hub to make smart devices (such as the Hue light bulbs) work.Set up was incredibly easy ,we use ours with a BT broadband Smart Hub and have had no issues. Alexa voice control is simply amazing....the 8 microphones easily pick up instructions from anywhere in the room only rarely does Alexa get stomped. The Alexa app (for us on iPhones and iPads) was also simplicity itself to set up and from that we can amongst other things set alarms, reminders, control lights. You can also allow Alexa to access your iOS calendar.I would however point out with regard to Hue lighting that the Echo Plus on its won will allow you to do the majority of everyday control functions for the lights but, if you want access to all the Hue features such setting your own bespoke colours, then you will still need to buy the Philips Hue Bridge. We eventually did exactly that and the Hue Bridge also works seamlessly with all our Echo devices and Alexa.Sound quality of the Echo Plus is excellent and betters many Bluetooth speakers at this price level that we have used. Assuming that you are a Prime customer, you can of course access Amazon Prime Music. A limited albeit still fairly extensive music catalogue but, if you pay for one of the additional plans, unlimited access to all Prime Music is available. One point to note for Apple Music users (like us) is that Apple is evidently working with Amazon to bring Apple Music to Echo devices later this year, in a similar way to what is currently available in the US. That is excellent news and will only enhance the Echo’s capabilities and usefulness. The Echo Plus itself is a relatively good looking mesh covered cylinder with buttons on top and the famous blue ring that activated when Alexa is communicating or waiting for reaction. We bought the charcoal grey version which sits quite happily in our living room. You could easily position this in any room without it looking out of place. But beyond that is of coarse the undeniable fact that Alexa makes this and other Echo devices special. Ask her for a radio station, a joke, the weather, a news briefing....all easily done and set up.‘Skills’ are easy to add from the Amazon site to enhance Alexa’s capabilities and all those we have adopted so far have been free.As described earlier, Add additional equipment such as the Philips Hue range and you can have voice controlled lights, motion sensors, cameras...it goes on and on and, be warned, once you start and see the possibilities, you find it difficult to stop! We have since eventually bolt a system including Echo dots in other rooms plus lights and sockets....once you use them, you don’t want to go back! The Echo Plus has been a big hit with us and has so impressed the wider family that others have also taken the plunge and bought one. Easily recommended.....even by a committed Apple user!

Don't get worried by this paragraph it is not reflective of the review but is intended to highlight to Amazon & Osram how poor their product descriptions are.Echo + with built in hub & Osram zigbee devices.I found Amazons description of Osram products with built in zigbee with reference to compatibility to be contradictory & confusing.Osrams instructions for setting up devices was even worse. So I thought I would look at customer reviews from people who had tried to use the 2 products together, guess what I ended up more confused than ever. This is the way I did it, I upgraded my devices (with zigbee) over a period of time until they could all be controlled directly by the Echo + then I switched from Echo 1st gen to Echo +.Don't be concerned,It is so easy to find your Osram devices with zigbee with the new Echo +(1) Unplug the Lightify hub & disable the Lightify app.(2) Next go to smart home in your Alexa app & remove all devices that state they are controlled by lightify.(3) Replace with your new bulb or bulbs if you are working on a group, turn on the light or lights if working on a group & then within ten seconds ask Alexa to find new devices. The new bulb(s) should flash on & off a few times which means your bulb(s) have been found.(4) Allow Alexa to complete its search then you can assign your new bulb(s) to your preferred group.Note - I had 1 Osram bulb with zigbee already on the old Echo 1st gen which would not be picked up by the new Echo +.For non technophobes like myself Alexa + thinks that because this bulb has been in use for a period of time it ignores it leaving you with a bulb only controllable by the conventional light switch. To fix this issue is simple.(1) With the bulb in question turned on, turn the light off & on 5 times using the light switch, leave about a 2 second pause between each action.(2) Within ten seconds of this ask Alexa to find new devices.(3) As above, bulb should flash on & off a few times this means Alexa has found your device.(4) Allow Alexa to complete her search. You can now enter the buld into your group in smart home in your Alexa app.Hope this helps.

Warning:Ok, before the review I have to say... There are people leaving negative reviews and dropping stars because of reasons which are not the devices fault. Do your research before buying! Leaving a negative review because you were too ignorant to learn about what the the device is capable of or not is not helping other people.Review:The Echo Plus just on it's own provides really good sound, but as 2.1 sound system (Echo Plus x2 & Echo Sub x1) it is fantastic. I wasn't expecting that whole 'stereo' type of sound/bass but it really surprised me how good it is. I don't need a seperate stereo as this provides exceptionally good sound.Sound settings are easily changed in the Alexa app (bass, mid, treble), they can make a lot of difference depending on what type of music you are listening to. It's not as detailed as having a full equalizer bar to manually adjust but it does work very well regardless.I purchased this package mainly to use as a stereo system but it is nice to have Alexa built in, it can come in handy. Some reviewers have said Alexa is struggling to answer their questions. I have had no such problem. I find as long as your asking reasonable questions you will get an answer the majority of the time. With the Echo Plus you have the hub built in to control all other smart devices you may have around the home. This has worked great for me completely trouble free.Another bonus would be how easily these are to set up. Basically out of the box all you need to do is plug in the mains and sign into your Amazon account in the Alexa app (free download) and it sets itself up. Time for this can vary (probably depends on your internet connection) but both of my Echos set up in under 5 minutes, even quicker for the Echo Sub.Overall, I would say if you just want an Alexa device then the Echo (Plus) is worth your money. But, if you want more, it also serves extremely well as a home stereo system.

Two of these were bought with the Echo sub, and placed in my living room, to work as a sound system there, and the sound is good. I've been able to connect them to my television (through Bluetooth), and it seems to work ok, but they seem to want to run the sound through just one of the speakers, which lessens the impact of having the speakers though I think this is the television's fault, I think you need to check that there are two audio outputs, with different feeds to get stereo). If it you can get them to work as stereo speakers, you're going to have to think were to place the speakers to get the best sound out of them. One other thing's to note, I also have a couple of regular Echos, which I now use as an alarm/radio for my kitchen and bedroom. The two Echo Pluses are better (soundwise), especially when paired with the Echo Sub (the bass is more noticeable), but I'm not sure they're that much better than the regular Echos, when used individually, so you have to ask yourself, am I willing to spend 56% more, if the sound isn't that much better. In addition to this, I assumed you'd be able to get it to do more things than the regular Echo, because of the price difference, but so far I haven't been able to do that. It has ZigBee (unlike the regular Echo I think), which I assume helps you connect to more things, but the paperwork says if you're using something else to run things, continue using the other thing to run those things. The other thing I'd like to point out is that after reading reviews for the Sub, I suspect that the initial production was rushed, and the product was initially buggy. That isn't the case now. You still have to think when you ask questions, but you have to remember that it's Artificial Intelligence, rather that actual intelligence, and so not as clever as you think. So all in all I like it, but can you justufy the price? If you can I say go for it.

All-new Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Charcoal Fabric + Philips Hue White bulb E27 is one speaker I am very happy to recommend. The speaker has totally improved in so many ways from the first Echo speakers I have purchased.First of all the ease of setting up was completed within two minutes and no problems whatsoever. The instructions from the Echo are told in different languages, though this was changed to your own chosen language the minute I completed activation to my own account. The first reason I do love the Echo Plus is the fact I do not have to first of all shout for "Alexa" to hear me as well as not having to repeat myself this is even the case when I am playing music etc at different levels.I have tried lowering my voice to different levels and was extremely surprised that "Alexa" first of all heard me and the fact she completed my requests with perfect ease.Amazon has really brought this speaker up to date as well as the many skills have multiplied so much I could easily sit and play with her all day and not run out of new skills to use or even simply try out.I love the fact instead of the usual alarm tone for wakening me up I am able to choose my favourite tunes or even my favourite radio stations which makes my alarm clock rather redundant. The clarity in sounds is phenomenal and I can honestly say it is the best sounds I have ever had the pleasure of hearing through any Bluetooth speaker.Connecting the speaker to my many devices is simple and also extremely quick and for me personally I am so glad I took the leap of faith and decided to update my Echo Speaker to the "Plus" model.I would highly recommend All-new Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Charcoal Fabric + Philips Hue White bulb E27 as well as the Philips Hue White Blub as a first class purchase.I will update my review as always as time goes on.

I never really thought about getting an Amazon Echo until we went to a friends house just before Christmas. They had one, and I was quite impressed with it, so I treated my family to one a couple of days later. I really do like it, easy to set up, got it to work straight away. The only problem is the Bluetooth to connect to a speaker. As a stand alone unit, the sound is pretty impressive. But, I have a soundbar with active sub about 2-3 meters away from it, which does obviouslysound a lot better when you really want your music to fill the room. When I first set the echo up, it connected straight away with the soundbar, and it was brilliant! This lasted about 2 days, then suddenly,no sound would come form the soundbar, even though the echo was connected to it. I googled the issue, and it seems to be a very common problem, and as of yet, nobody seem to of got round the problem, even Amazon, and some of these complaints about no sound coming through the connected speaker were going back about 3 years. I've tried everything that was suggested, the restarts, unplugging and leaving it for 30 secs, then 10 mins, unpairing then pairing again, all the obvious stuff, nothing worked. I even tried to connect my sons Bose bluetooth speaker, and it just did exactly the same, it would connect to it, but no sound would come out. Apart from the bluetooth issue, its been brilliant! Ask Alexa for weather reports, ask it for jokes, playing the Radio (which is what I mainly use it for!). But when I want to listen to my favourite music with a bit more ooomph! And I ask Alexa to connect to the speaker. It connects ok, but there is definatley no ooomph, total opposite in fact! So if someone at Amazon could sort the Bluetooth to Speaker issue out, it would be 5 stars.

No, this will never be a Sonos in terms of sound quality but it's the best compromise out there sub £200.The sound is clear, retains clarity at maximum volume and the pass is responsive and punchy. The equaliser can be tuned to your preference but straight out of the box it is a top quality speaker. Most impressively, at high volume the far-field mics can easily pick up your voice for the wake word. The design is nice, clean and blends with home decor very well. The mics' responsiveness seems better than my 3rd gen echo dot however I must make it clear it has all the same Alexa functions. The internal thermostat is a nice touch and would combine well for a routine that includes Hive.I'll be honest,I did not buy this for the Zigbee hub which is probably what increases the price by so much. Most things connect to the Echo Plus via 3rd party apps if not direct and so I'm struggling to find a use for that. Currently I only use bulbs and my TV for 'smart' use and this just shows that Philips are milking people for money with an extra hub when there are bulbs which can connect via the Smart Life app, saving a lot of money. The top of the Echo Plus is a fingerprint magnet so wipe down once in a while. One major let down is the lack of 3rd party support from other streaming services - TIDAL and Apple Music need to get on board in the UK as they have both recently made their services available in the US on Alexa. Once companies like these fully integrate, it will be hard to advise of another 'smart' speaker that does everything so well. One of the best purchases I've made recently.

How do they get such a rich and clear sound from such a small unit! Great sound for background music, but powerful enough to have a dance to if you want to! The response is quick and rarely misses a beat. Alexa is entertaining and actually really useful (we often check on the local traffic situation and how long it will take to get to somewhere just before we leave or when we are planning a trip). She learns our likes and dislikes, wakes us up in the morning and reminds us of things we mustn't forget. Takes messages, entertains and even makes us laugh. Is it intrusive? Well, of course, that is debatable. Are we being monitored and listened to at some remote location to see what we're doing or buying or watching?I don't know. But as we're not doing anything illegal or that we are ashamed of at any time, I don't really think about it. We are 'watched' so much already, one way or another. We really enjoy having Alexa around and we're going to add a Dot to have in the bedroom so that the main unit can stay downstairs. Would I recommend this to others? Actually, I would. I think it would be a great boost for elderly people or those living alone because you can have stories read to you, tell jokes, find out what's going on in the World .... all by asking. I think Alexa could help greatly alleviate loneliness even! You just need a wi-fi!

I'm just going to talk about the sound in this review. I see no point in talking about the good and bad of Alexa, plenty of people have done that. If you're buying one of these you probably want to know about the sound vs the other echos. IN short, it's very good. The speaker has a warm comforting sound. You must I repeat must tweak the bass mid and treble settings depending upon the room. I find an increase of +2 on the bass works in most rooms, a +1 for the mids and the treble varies. In some rooms I have it set to +3 or +4 , others it's 1 or 2. Either way, You get a very warm pleasing sound from this little box. It won't replace a hifi system, but it makes a cracking bedroom speaker for example or a radio alarm clock. The bass is rounded and delivers quite a thump throughout the room, it struggles ever so slightly with the finer detail of top end but you can alter this with settings to suit your taste. It's also quite nice just to touch and look at, the fabric is definitely a welcome edition over the all plastic editions. Do not be tempted by the echo sub, the implementation is very poor at this stage. I'm also not sure I'd recommend a stereo set of these given they can only play certain things through in stereo, but for a decent home assistant speaker, it works very well. A nice solid entry in the echo family from Amazon here.

i ordered two echoes and a subwoofer to boost my current home setup. rather than pair the supplied echo pluses to the subwoofer i have paired two second gen. echoes and the echo pluses now live one in the kitchen and one on the landing. the complete setup also has a second gen. echo show in the bedroom, a second gen. echo in the study and the 2.1 hifi in the lounge (pictured). the difference in sound quality is quite marked between the echo and echo plus. the larger speakers in the echo plus give a much fuller sound with a bit more clarity to boot. in the lounge the addition of an extra echo and the subwoofer all paired to act as one device has transformed the sound.there is now a left and right channel giving proper stereo separation and the 6" subwoofer can provide house shaking levels of bass. the whole hifi can be added to additional groups so i can instruct alexa to play music "everywhere" and the whole house comes alive to the sound of music as all the echoes play. i am still amazed that there is no delay to the music so all devices are in sync regardless of their position around the house. finally i would just add that the build quality of all the devices is top notch with the second gen. echo pluses benefitting from a softer rounder design giving a premium look and feel to the devices.

Bought from a major retailer due to having a gift card. I live in the UK and this was a present for my daughters birthday. It was easy to set up but, although it has an option to connect to Apple iTunes, it wouldn't work. I was experiencing a vicious circle. I set Apple Music as the default stream, but asking Alexa to play music on iTunes I got a "you will need a software update to play iTunes", "ask me to search for a software update". You did as requested and it said the unit was up to date. It then repeated the above again and again. In desperation I phoned Amazon UK who advised me to switch off/on and leave it for at least 30 mins without talking to it and they would phone back in an hour.In 70 mins the agent called back and sure enough an update had automatically updated the unit and it plays iTunes. Brilliant efficient service. I believe that iTunes streaming was only made available the previous day in the UK, prior to that only Bluetooth was possible which worked but you didn't have the facility to request tracks. All working now, got a free light bulb.as well.I'm in my 60's and never understood or felt the need for an item like this, but having played with it, I want one. Its on my birthday list. Update, bought a 2nd Echo plus during the July sale. I wouldn't pay full price though

Was a bit of a pig to set up but I think the instructions are not that clear and my wi-fi provider have a notoriously bad 3rd generation router that is known to be rubbish....not for much longer though.Anyway I finally got it going and was impressed enough that I bought another 3 devices including a Studio model which is pretty impressive on its own. The package overall is good once set up, Alexa is responsive, does get most commands right 1st time despite my broad Manc accent, just the odd misstep or appearing to ignore on occasion. But again, I think my poor wi-fi does not help in that respect.A WORD OF WARNING. Unless you are desperate to buy, wait.I ignored the warnings and what I purchased was available for £135 less a mere 7 days later. Amazon would not honour the lower price, so ended up returning the 1st lot and ordering the new cheaper identical replacements. The price of the Echo devices does appear very fluid, so be wary of what you pay. Wait until Prime day which is what I promised myself I would do, then found out it was being pushed back to much later in the year, if at all, which is why I jumped and paid the regular price now.

One criticism. Instructions for setting this up are pretty poor. It says download the Alexa app and follow the instructions. I already had the Alexa app, since I had the echo dot. App recognised the echo plus, but when I tried to set this up and link to my wifi, it failed every time. I resorted to searching online for more detailed instructions. It turns out that you need to ignore the echo plus on the listed devices and add a new device. You then go through the options of adding another echo, with options for echo plus second generation. Only then, will it install successfully.Back again to the device list, and only one echo plus on the list, this time, everything ok.Now the good stuff. The sound quality is excellent, and gets better with use ( Think it is the speakers loosening up or something as you use it )Very strong bass which can be turned down using the equaliser control on the app.Bit disappointed with the equaliser controls, since it is only three sliders, one each for bass, middle and treble. No presets. However, still worth 5 stars for the sound quality alone. Two of these linked would probably sound amazing.

This is a fantastic speaker both from a smart point of view and musical point of view. It's great at controlling the likes of smart lights and music. I find that Amazon music works the best and sound quality is very good. The speaker is responsive to voice commands which it can hear from large distances away. I don't find it as quite intelligent as Google but it's getting better all the time. The speaker is relatively loud and will fill a small lounge. What I do like I'd that it project music from all directions. It's not as good as a set of stereo speakers and amp etc. But it good enough, you won't be disappointed. Plus you don't have to sit directly in front of it to enjoy the sound at its best like you do with stereo speakers.Initially I had 2 set up in stereo mode.I will day it improved the dynamics and there was certainly better bass and mid range. But to honest I actually enjoy it more as a single speaker as you get the 360 sound imaging that you don't even it set up in stereo. You won't be disappointed if you buy this speaker . I don't find any difference between this and my Sonos play 1 do thats good

I got this as a replacement for my echo plus 1st gen. I prefer this design and it’s much shorter and stubbier, which fits in my living room much better. The set up process has improved massively now, and if you have other echo devices linked to your network, it connects itself very quickly after plugging into the wall, no set up required! I have 2 echo dots, an echo, and this.My main reason for having the original echo plus was to avoid having a “bridge” for all my smart lights. I have about 5 plugs and 10 bulbs around the house and the previous echo communicated happily with all of them - however, this is where the new echo plus lost a star. When I connected it up,it un-synced most of my lights and it’s been a nightmare to get it all back. I have a mixture of Phillips hue and innr bulbs ... the hue bulbs without a bridge are now really hard to reset - so I had to get the serial codes off them to do so. Took several attempts.Having said that, now that my lights are back I’m very happy. The sound quality on it is much better then the 1st gen - and it provides much better base and much louder sound.
