SummaryAt 11cm tall by 9cm wide and weighing in at 425g this speaker is highly portable and should be a tempting prospect to anyone who likes their music on the go. The sound quality is good and the bass is ok but lacks a little bit of depth and oomph, for me, but it does a respectable job nonetheless. The midrange and treble offer a decent amount of detail and clarity. Overall it’s a pleasurable listen, although at higher volumes some distortion started to creep in and the treble seemed a bit overpowered. I found the speaker is easily loud enough to fill a room and had no issues hearing it outside even with background noise. Bluetooth range is stated at around 100ft without obstacles.I’ve found the range to be better than that, with it managing over 150ft in my testing. The battery has also impressed, it’s stated to do around 13 hours, but in my tests it has managed 21 hours at moderate volume, obviously volume will affect battery life but you can feel pretty safe with the stated 13 hours. From flat, the battery took just under 3 hours to fully charge. The speaker itself feels robust, good in the hand and is finished in soft touch rubber on the top and bottom with a material finish around the middle.ConclusionI think this is a good allround bluetooth speaker that has a few aces up its sleeve, battery life, bluetooth range, IP rating and portability being its standout features. The sound quality is good but isn’t its strongest suit in my opinion, and it’s loud enough to fill a room and deal with all but the loudest background noise. It’s a shame that there’s no 3.5mm input, and a bit more functionality, like the ability to take calls, would have been a welcome addition. Overall it’s a solid performer that gets the job done and lends itself well to those who want their music on the move without the need for all the bells and whistles. The pros definitely outweigh the cons and I think this speaker is certainly worth your consideration. If you want to know more then please keep reading as I go into more depth below as well as going through a bit of the functionality. I also suggest a couple of alternatives at the bottom of this review. Thanks for reading and I hope this review has been helpful.ProsLoud - Fills a room and easily audible outside even with background noise. I live next to a busy main road and had no problems hearing it whilst in the garden.360 Sound - Sound quality remains good wherever it is positioned or orientated. If you put this in the centre of a circle of people each person is going to have a pretty good listening experience. It’s not quite as good if you’re directly behind it but on the whole it works pretty well.Size - At 11cm tall x 9cm wide and 425g this is a very portable and versatile speaker that will easily fit in a rucksack, handbag or just be carried in hand. The hanging loop also means it can be hung from all sorts of things while in use or for transit. Attach a carabiner to the loop and you can pretty much hang it from anything.Battery - I’ve timed the battery life a couple of times and both times it’s surpassed the expected 13 hour runtime. In a runtime test where I played it at a moderate volume it actually managed 21 hours. I’ve charged it twice from flat, both times it has fully charged in under 3 hours. The power light flashes blue when charging, once fully charged the power light will go off altogether.IP rating - No need to worry about rain or damp conditions cutting your listening short. It also floats so no need to worry about poolside party mishaps.Bluetooth Range - Where there are obstacles it has managed a range of about 25-40ft, this varies depending on what the obstacles are. In open space It’s done over 150ft, very impressive. I’m not sure if this is typical but I think you’ll definitely be safe with the stated 100ft.Double Up - You can pair two wonderboom 2s together and have your music playing through both.OKSound - Sound quality is very subjective but here are my thoughts. The bass is ok and performs respectably but it definitely leans more toward midrange and treble. Overall, it produces a pleasurable sound although at higher volumes I did find that some distortion does creep in and the treble becomes a tad overpowering.Functionality - Press the PLAY button once to pause your music, press the PLAY button again to resume. Press the PLAY button twice to skip forward a track. These functions have worked flawlessly in Amazon Music, Google Play Music and YouTube. If you were hoping to skip-back tracks or take calls through this speaker then, sadly, you’re out of luck.Battery Indicator - If you press the volume UP and DOWN buttons at the same time the speaker will make sounds to indicate battery level. I don’t really know what these sounds mean exactly as it’s not mentioned in the documentation. Thankfully, the power light turns red when the battery is low.Outdoor Boost - Press the button on the bottom of the speaker, marked with a tree, and you’ll activate Outdoor Boost. It does boost the volume, but to my ears, it does this mainly in the midrange and treble leaving the bass lagging, it does work but it’s not a sound that I particularly liked and haven’t used it since testing it, so only ok in my opinion.ConsNo 3.5mm Input - It would have been nice to have had the option of going old-school, not everything has bluetooth capability.Manual - While it teaches everything you need to know it doesn’t really go into depth and leaves you guessing about a few things. In the box you’ll find…Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 SpeakerUSB to Micro USB cable (approx 60cm in length)InstructionsSome alternatives I have used and also recommend.Sony SRS-XB22 - All the bells and whistles.Anker Soundcore 2 - Budget friendly.

This is our second UE speaker, the first being the Megaboom 3. I was expecting this to be a much lesser product but I was completely wrong!I've taken the cabbage sized device (I really like the shape) out of the simple packaging (no plastic, so thumbs up), given it a quick charge for 30 mins and the light went from flashing to solid. I assume it was already partially charged, as most products seem to be on delivery these days. I've powered it up and hear the pops and whistles that UE use. The Megaboom uses speech feedback whereas this seems to be only sounds. It's fine except for the battery level indication. Pressing the + and - produces a tone that is supposed to tell us what the battery level is.I haven't a clue what it is after a few hours use, to be honest. A simple LED indication would be much better and would avoid language issues. Pairing was super simple and just uses the device interface - there's no app involved. Much more basic than the Megaboom. I've coupled it with two versions of Android and a Microsoft Surface with no issues. Connection is solid, I can go anywhere in the house without it dropping out.Playing music via the Amazon Music app impresses. A punchy sound without going overboard on the bass. Actually better than the more expensive Megaboom in our opinion. Surprised us too! It sounded great with classical music, Chemical bros and Slipknot. The claimed 360 sound is true. In my video you can hear this - it makes no difference to the sound as I rotate it. There's a button that changes the sound profile for use outdoors. I haven't tried it as I don't like annoying people in the park. I assume it works as it does make quite a difference to the sound indoors, making it sound worse. Using it with the Surface computer to watch Amazon Prime via a browser sounds fantastic but is slightly out of lip sync. The Netflix app is fine, so it's the fact it's from the browser. As soon as my partner saw that it was waterproof and floatable, it disappeared into the bathroom for a bath. Twenty minutes and a vast amount of singing later, she reappeared and claimed 'It's a 5 star!". She loved it and had been dunking it with no problems. Dunking it also served to mute the sound. No problems with operating the buttons but she didn't operate the play/pause button when dunked. Assume this would be bad?It has this coupling feature to link with other UE speakers but I found it will only link with other Wonderboom (including version 1) products. No luck in connecting with the Megaboom 3.Here's my issues with it that drops it a star:1. MicroUSB. It's 2019 and this is a new product. It should be USB C with an adaptor for those that need it.2. No way to select the previous track. Skip to next, yes but not skip back.3. Unless the sound is far superior, the Wonderboom 1 is probably a better option for most. It's now 40% cheaper and not enough appears to have changed on the new model. It's an extremely practical speaker that's easily the toughest I've used. Brilliant sounding too. But sadly, not worth upgrading to if you already have the Wonderboom.

Speaker was very simple to get going once out the box, requiring minimal accessories (comes with a USB charger and that’s it). I loved the simplistic design and the instructions are short and simple. I’m a musician and produce music so my ears are quite critical when evaluating speakers. That could be considered a pro or a con as it could mean I hear things the average person wouldn’t pick up on. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist for wanting music to sound how it was intended when mixed. Speakers are a big factor to consider with that.Considering the size I was impressed with the wide sound this speaker can create. You get a very crisp and immersive sound which would easily fill a room.Certainly perfect for the outdoors and fantastic that you don’t have to worry about it getting wet (you can actually even immerse it in water). However, considering the speaker boasts of a ‘boom’ and a ‘big bass’ the sound mix felt primarily in the highs and mids to me. There is some bass but it is not always very easily distinguishable. If you like a speaker with a boomy bass this one is not for you.My biggest gripe was when pushing the speaker to the max. Granted you wouldn’t necessarily play it at top volume but some tracks I tested, the speaker just couldn’t cope with. For the most part, at max volume the sound becomes very ‘tinny’ and a number of R’n’B tracks were becoming noticeably blurred with some buzzing noise. Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Up with Your Girlfriend’ was a noticeable problem for the speaker. Muse’s ‘Time is Running Out’ faired a little better but this is likely down to the way the track itself is layered with more live instruments over something like Ariana Grande with more production factors to weigh in.Where the speaker failed for me is when comparing it with my Sony SRS-XB2. This has been my trusty Bluetooth speaker for a while now. It’s even a fair bit cheaper and delivers a far superior sound in my opinion. However, this particular Sony model is a little heavier and arguably not as compact/transportable as the WONDERBOOM. You must also consider this Sony model is a completely different style of speaker. If you compare to a Sony SRS-XB10 (very similar style to WONDERBOOM) the WONDERBOOM wins hands down.I’d argue this speaker fails to deliver on its ‘big bass’ description but as a portable Bluetooth speaker I can see why it is a popular contender. For me they still have work to do to perfect their sound balance and does seem to really depend on what sort of music you listen to whether it will be a good purchase for you. If I had to choose between this and my Sony SRS-XB2 I’d still opt for the Sony. This speaker would be an absolute steal if it was in a lower price range but for the £89 RRP I think there are lower priced speakers that are just as good.

I've had an original UE Boom speaker for several years now, as well as a couple of bluetooth speakers from other brands, so it's interesting to see how this compares to the others, especially given its small size.Out of the box, it's very simple to set up - press the power button, then hold the smaller button the top for a few seconds until pairing mode is enabled. It will then start flashing, and you can pair it as normal. Once paired to a device, it will automatically reconnect to that device whenever it's turned on, though it's easy enough to re-pair to a new device if you need to.The large plus and minus buttons on the front control the volume, though it feels trickier trying to press the plus button in for some reason - I'm not sure if this is a one-off defect or a general issue, but it's not a big deal in either case.To charge the device, connect to the supplier micro-USB cable to the speaker via the charging port, which is concealed via a rubber plug to keep it water-tight. There is no plug supplied unfortunately, so you'll need to connect it directly to a USB socket (on your computer, for example), or borrow a USB plug from another device. It's not clear what power output you'd need from the plug, but it seems to work fine with both a standard phone charger and an iPad charger plug. The sound output is pretty impressive, particularly for the size. I've found that the location of the speaker will have a big effect on the output, and putting it close to a corner seems to produce a nicely balanced sound with decent bass. I have found the bass output to vary quite considerably between different songs however, particularly with the 'outdoor mode' activated. Given the size it's understandable, but if a strong, consistent bass is important to you then you may want to look at slightly larger speakers in the range.Battery life is great, as with any of the UE speaker range. However, on previous UE Boom speakers, pressing the plus and minus buttons simultaneously would cause the speaker to tell you the remaining battery charge as a percentage - on the UE Wonderboom, you simply get a sound (with three variations) to indicate the battery level, which is nowhere near as intuitive. If you want to test out the "Dual-Speaker System" feature you can pair up two of these speakers to double the sound output - that would be particularly useful for outdoor use, where a single speaker can still feel a bit drowned out. However, bear in mind that they won't be in stereo, it will just be a duplication of a single channel of sound.Overall, it's a solid, compact little speaker that produces a great sound for its size. Though not without its flaws, it's rugged, waterproof, has a long battery life and is simple to operate.

These speakers are well and truly targeted at people who like to travel with their music, wherever they go. They’re water proof, drop proof, float in water and have a little loop that let’s you hang them off a backpack, bag, belt, whatever. In other words, perfect for the upcoming summer. They are surprisingly bulky though, made to be carried hooked onto a bag rather than in one. They’re spongy to the touch, which suggests that a lot of the volume is impact padding in the form of a foam, made extra thick to allow for that floating trick.I do get the impression that sound quality has been sacrificed slightly for all that protection. The base has been artificially enhanced some how, making the speaker quite boomy (maybe hence the name). That artificial boosting gives a little disconnect between the bass and the mid and high ranges, making them sound like 2 different sources. Saying that, boominess aside, the sound is actually pretty good in Bluetooth speaker terms. They’ll never compete with a wired, home sound system, but that’s not the point. The reason I added these to our growing Bluetooth speaker collection is the ability to pair two Wonderbooms to get a wider, bigger sound for large rooms or noisy outdoor venues. It is ridiculously easy to pair the two; pair one to your phone or tablet, then long press the UE buttons on both speakers at the same time and - voila! - job done. There’s little to no lag in the playback (which can plague these sorts of systems), so the effect is just that of more power. The styling is a thing of taste, especially when paired with the florescent yellow USB charging cable. The fact that they look a little like a hand grenade (Boom!) and have a big cross on them just makes me think of Monty Python’s Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch (and now I’ve said it, so will you). That just makes them more fun in my mind. Add in the fact you can fake a disaster by ‘accidentally’ dropping them into a swimming pool when people don’t know they’re made for that.Ninety pounds seems a little over the top (especially if you want two of these) for a BT speaker, but at least you can be reassured you’re not going to break them any time soon. UE is a brand of Logitech, so you have a pretty big hardware accessory company behind the warranty and manufacturing control, which can be reassuring too. If you like the style, the idea of a speaker that floats in a pool and you like your bass boomy, I’d say go for it.I don’t love them - because I’m not a huge bass sound fan and would prefer a more coherent overall effect - so I’m rating them 4 star, but they’re very close to a 5.

Simply fantastic! No it doesn't deliver the best sound in the world, but this item is so good that I have ordered another at £89.99 in addition to the one which I received as part of the Vine programme: why? Simple, you can connect more than one speaker to the same sound source and therefore you can use them in several locations in the house, garden, or wherever, simultaneously playing the same music wirelessly.Good points=========+ Weather resistant (I am confident that they will cope with British weather, dut I am always a bit sceptical about waterproof)+ Light enough weight as to make them easily portable, but heavy enough to convey quality+ The sound - whilst not fantastic, when you consider the price, build quality, portability and weather proofing, this speaker is a marvel+ The signal from my phone passes through two brick walls fine and we have only had one issue where the signal would not reach and I suspect that is due to the fact that we have solid oak floorboards; same happens with Wi-Fi and the phone signal from our landline base station+ Battery life is very good - we used it for 7 hours before re-charging - it was still going but we felt that we should recharge it.+ Set up and control is a doddle, it paired with a number of devices very easily and the controls are press plus (+) for more volume and minus (-) to lower the setting.+ Design and build is good - plastic and light alloy - it is claimed by the manufacturer that you can drop it from up to 2 metres and it will absorb the impact. I haven't tried it, but I am confident that it is shock proof.DOWNSIDES===========Not a lot, although I hate charging these items via USB and until recently had a concern regarding ad hoc chargers as whilst I understand how chargers work, the various "rates" conversion rates always makes me wonder whether the rate of charge is appropriate to the device. I have acquired an intelligent charger which determines the correct amount for a specific device and I can sleep easy! Similarly there is no carry case, but to be honest, neither of the downsides effected me enough to lower my rating.I have compared the sound generated to a similar, but not waterproof product from Libratone. I have to say that the sound from the Libratone is better, particularly at the higher end of treble, bass and volume BUT the Wonderboom is £30.00 cheaper and has the wonderful ability to allow me to position multiple speakers and that, the weatherproofing and general durability make it a FIVE STAR item for me.

This Bluetooth speaker is about the size of a grapefruit. It's available in six colours (black, pink, blue, grey, purple, red) with contrasting lanyard / loop and huge + - volume control buttons on the front. It comes in a nice presentation box, and kinda looks like a holy relic at first glance (see Monty Python's Holy Grail). Behind the speaker, printed on the packaging are some simple graphical instructions on what the two top buttons do. Below that and underneath a flap is the (colour coordinated) USB charging cable. This is a Bluetooth speaker only, there's no 3.5mm audio jack input (presumably to keep it waterproof). Only other things to hand are a pair of backlit buttons on top for On/Off and bluetooth.Simples.Switch it on and you get a loud whoosh-beep sound. Press the second button to pair Bluetooth, more loud beeps. Finally when pairing has been made, another squeaky beep. More beeps when unpairing and switching off. That gets a bit annoying after a while, especially as they're quite loud. Battery life is superb, I left it playing music when I left for work and it was still going 8 hours later when I got home. One speaker will pair with up to eight different sources and you can have two of them active at any one time. Plus, you can link with another Wonderboom for bigger sound (though I don't know if they will form a stereo pair).Sound wise, yes, there's a 360 degree spread from the speaker, but the frequency spread isn't great. I found it was perfect for listening to Radio 4 in the bathroom, you could hear the presenter's voice cut through the sound of the shower. For general music, say, playing from your mobile phone, it'll do, but it isn't audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. Turn it up loud, especially with complex or rock music and it produces a muddy sound that isn't enjoyable. Bass isn't great. It is waterproof, weatherproof and capable of standing up to much abuse without breaking a sweat. It can be used in a steamy bathroom, up a mountain, by the swimming pool or seaside; it actually floats on water, all the while pumping out music. That's pretty phenomenal. The lanyard / loop on the back, while a bit stretchy and properly glued in, is really only big enough for hanging on a nail.Note, as with many Bluetooth speakers / headphones, there is an audible sound lag if you're watching a film / YouTube / etc. It's enough to notice, so I don't think you could really watch a movie with this.

I am reviewing the Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM Bluetooth Speaker Waterproof with Double-Up Connection - Fireball Red. Here are my thoughts:^^ I have tried out quite a few portable speakers, and although this looked kind of odd to me, in shape and design, and fairly small, I have been blown away with the quality and have grown to love this.^^ This bluetooth speaker easily connects to my mobile phone, but what I love about this is it also connects to my Amazon Echo/dot, so I can have the music in a completely different room. This is handy, for instance, when my son is watching telly, and I want to listen to a book or music in a different room.We don't disturb each other that way when we want to do our own things!^^ It can pair wirelessly to stream to two UE speakers at the same time. So in theory you can have two of these speakers either side of you - that's a lot of sound. Larger versions of this can pair to even more. Wi-Fi range is 30m (100 ft). I find this is ample for my house.^^ As for sound quality, I'm impressed. It turns up loud (the plus and minus signs on the front are not just for decoration, they are the volume control buttons. Plus like Alexa, the speakers have all around sound, this provides clear sound all around the room. And it can go surprisingly loud, without distortion. It goes up to 87 DB(A).^^ Lasts quite a while before it needs charging. About 10 hours. I like to charge mine up every other day when using it a lot.^^ It's completely waterproof. I used to be scared of testing out these things, but these days when companies say they're waterproof they're really waterproof. I had this literally fall into the bath and float, and it's still going strong. It's totally sealed, and actually cleanable. No cleaning fluids though, just a damp cloth works fine,^^ Comes in a range of colours. It's made from tough material, so it never feels like it might break if dropped.^^ What it doesn't come with is a plug, just a USB connection for charging. This is fine for me, but a plug can be bought separately if you prefer to charge it up directly through the mains.Overall: Very happy with this, despite first impressions, it's not just another wireless speaker, this is really good for so many reasons. It's also really nicely presented, so would make a great gift.

This is the second Ultimate Ears speaker I’ve tried, though I didn’t previously realise that that’s a Logitech alias. The kids have been known to fight over who gets the first Ultimate Ears one as it’s clearly their favourite, and we gave it a 5 star review. This one is smaller, wider, more blue, but it still has all the strengths that make it one of the best Bluetooth speakers I’ve ever tried- certainly the best for its size.As a ‘Wonderboom’ it’s appropriately named, because it really does have a bass boom to it, and you wonder how a device so small is able to pack such a substantial low-end sound punch. But rather than just being noisy, it’s incredibly rich and detailed, even at high volumes- get some well-recorded acoustic bass playing going through it and it sounds so pure and tuneful, without any hint of low-end distortion, that you can’t help but be impressed. If you don’t like your bass, though, you’ll need to find a player with its own built-in EQ options, because this is bass that really punches through the wall or through the floor. If you’re in a shared house and people want you to keep the noise to a reasonable level, this speaker could potentially give you problems! The build quality is excellent. It’s properly waterproof- I was confident enough to really test that, whereas other ‘waterproof’ items sometimes make me nervous about really finding out if that’s true or not. The soft blue fabric on the outside gives a good grip and the strong elasticated fabric hook is a great touch, allowing you to keep it in your shower as a shower speaker day-to-day and then just pick it up and take it out on your treks at the weekends with the minimum of fuss.We got a ‘bermuda blue’ one and the fabric colour is quite characterful as well, with flecks of white in it, looking almost stonewashed. It’s an unusual choice for tech but it blends in to trekking gear quite nicely. The one thing I would say about trekking with it is that despite its size, it’s still quite heavy- you could certainly get more lightweight portable speakers, if the sound quality wasn’t as important to you. It’s an excellent all-round speaker, with an incredible bass, and which it’s very hard to find any fault with. Admittedly it’s not cheap, but it’s not cheap for a reason.

The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom2 bluetooth speaker is intended to be a 'take anywhere' speaker. It is quite small but weighty at the same time indicating some money has been well spent on the unit. On the box, the Wonderboom2 is a waterproof speaker that will also float on the water...The Wonderboom2 comes with a micro USB charging cable and a quick start guide that is cleverly printed on the inside cover of the lid. The Wonderboom has a couple of buttons placed around it. On top, the bluetooth pairing button, on/off charging indicator button and a combined pause/play/skip advance button are located. On the base is a 'outdoor boost' button whilst at the side is a flap containing the USB charging port.On the front of the speaker are the large volume buttons.Pairing to the speaker is quick and simple. For a change, no app is required. I played a selection of genres through it including Bon Jovi, Bach and heaven forgive me, Girls Aloud. The speaker exhibits a 'warm' character. There is enough clarity and definition in the mid-range and treble. The bass sounds well controlled. The Wonderboom didn't distort at high volumes and acquitted itself well at almost everything I threw at it. There is an 'outdoor' boost button which is another term for a loudness button. From what I could tell, it amplifies the mid-range at the expense of the low end and high end frequencies. The word 'screechy' comes to mind.Battery wise, I managed around 11 hours of playback from a full charge. As for its waterproof credentials - not brave enough to drop into a sink full of water but in the shower it worked without any problems. In conclusion, the Wonderboom is a terrific little bluetooth speaker. There's no point in using the 'outdoor' boost function as it's a novelty. I would be inclined to say this is one of the better bluetooth speakers on the market out there but would you be prepared to pay £90? I would probably wait for it to drop by around £20.

Beautifully gift packaged in a casket type box, this is a really robust speaker that works very well indeed. The long battery life once charged means that it packs a batch of lithium rechargeables within and as such, it's not particularly lightweight, but this is a minor point.I use my Bluetooth speakers to enhance the sound from my iPhone 6S Plus and I have to say I am really impressed. The bass tones are rich but don't let the 'boom' part put you off this. It's possible to listen to a wide range of music without distortion although obviously rock, drum n bass etc are the music genres that are best served by this.Set up is incredibly simple. I liked the fact that the micro USB - USB charging cable was bright yellow, making it easy to spot amongst a plethora of charging cables. Once plugged in and charging, (when the activation button on top of the speaker is pressed) the speaker instantly connects to a Bluetooth enabled device. Mine connected instantly to my iPhone.A sound tone indicates connection / disconnection, there's no helpless looking for a tiny flashing light sequence in bright sunlight to figure out if it is activated or not.It appears in the Bluetooth enabled device list on your iPhone etc as 'Wonderboom' so is very easily identified. Set up instructions are provided but they are barely needed. There is no complex sequence of pushing buttons to get this going, as with some speakers. The USP of this device is the fact that it is so rugged - and it is. The 360 degree mesh cover on the barrel shaped speaker looks as if almost nothing will damage it, the top and base are tough rubberised plastic.I haven't tested it by dropping it in water but I have no doubt that providing the USB port cover is in place all will be well. Really pleased with this elegant and practically designed item.

I don’t know how Ultimate Ears put such great sound into such tiny packages but with the Wonderboom 2 things have ratcheted up a notch in terms of quality and performance. And, let’s be honest, looks - this version oozes charm, the two-tone grey casing and the orange “crucifix” volume controls really have the wow factor.I have the original Wonderboom which is nothing short of fantastic in itself. Well move over, because the W2 manages to provide a sound that is somehow punchier and more balanced. Even though bass is enhanced, it doesn’t take over and the treble is deliciously clear. There is none of the boxiness you might associate with small powerful speakers - the sound is just wonderful.A new feature on this model is the outdoor sound button, located underneath. This sharpens the overall sound for outdoor use and throws things just that bit further. Effective and a nice touch. Now - can it float? Well yes it can. I finally plucked up the courage to dunk it in the sink, as I don’t, sadly, have a swimming pool on my terrace. This can be fully submerged for up to half an hour, it also bobs around happily on the surface of the water. Sound is dampened underwater as you would expect, but as soon as you’re back on the surface of the water or on “dry land” it bounces back to normal. You are reminded in the instructions that the unit must be absolutely dry before you charge it after having put it near water. You can also pair this with another Wonderboom 2 to give true stereo, using the centre top button. This does not work with the original Wonderboom (at least I couldn’t get it to) so I think this feature can only be used when using two Wonderboom 2s.Just great - amazing performance and superb value. Dive in!

The product comes packaged in a new slick box and a joy to open.Contents found inside the box are one Wonderboom 2 speaker, charging cable and instructions. Note, that most of the instructions on how to use the product are on the inside of the lid.Love the design. It’s compact…the size of the speaker is like that of a small grapefruit. Also, the speaker is waterproof and floats, but I’m not prepared to test that theory out. My one is in red and I am very happy with the colour. One point of concern is that the buttons are not intuitive enough, I have never had read the manual on how to set up the Bluetooth on anything before, but I had to with this product – by the way,the button to set up the Bluetooth is found on the top of the speaker and has a dot on it. Even the on and off switch is not obvious at first! The middle bottom is for the play/pause function. It’s summer right now and it’s been great having this speaker for BBQs! There’s a button at the bottom of the device, which is a boost switch for when you are outside, and it seems to project the sound out further, however, it seems like you lose a lot of the bass in the process. I love that the sound is 360! Supposedly you can pair up two devices, which could be great if you have a massive garden or something. It's got a convenient hanging loop, which is great for…well…hanging it off something. It did come in handy to be fair.In terms of sound quality…it’s a portable speaker, it’s good for what it is. However, it’s better than some portable speakers I have had before. Great to have at a BBQ, but you wouldn’t be mixing No.1 singles with it!!! I watched Inception with this speaker and the sound quality was amazing. All in all, I am very impressed

This has minimalist controls - the big +/- volume buttons on the front, and on/off and Bluetooth pairing buttons on top. Pairing and connecting generally seems fairly easy but I have had a couple of occasions of difficulty having to turn Bluetooth on my phone on and off again. I'm not a fan of the annoying noises it makes when turned on/off (or auto-turn off after inactivity, which gives a bit of a fright as it's fairly loud) or Bluetooth is connected/disconnected. Makes me think of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy's Krikkit spaceship appearing and disappearing with the sound of several thousand people simultaneously saying "foop" or "w-o-p".The device claims to be waterproof. The USB charging slot (you get a charging lead with mini USB -> standard USB included, in my case in a lurid yellow which makes an "interesting" clash with the pink) has a covering flap, which I'm not entirely convinced could be called waterproof, though it's probably enough to prevent damage if it drops in a swimming pool for example and it is retrieved reasonably quickly afterwards.Although it is supposedly surround sound, it is a bit directional - the two stereo channels seem to come out of each side, and for certain types of music at least, such as the Renaissance polyphony and Baroque opera which I listen to, you do tend to get a bit of a different experience depending on your position relative to the speaker. However for pop music, likely the genre for which most people would use this, it doesn't seem to be as big an issue. Also it seems a little bit 'tinny' in the higher range, of which you tend to get a lot in my early music. But likewise for popular music with more of a bass emphasis it's not so large a concern.

The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom takes off from the Roll - the sound is very very similar. Both the roll and Wonderboom sound like a slightly louder iPhone speaker system. There is a more noticeable midrange to the music; but the compact designs has limited their bass abilities. Played against a larger more fragile bluetooth speaker the sonic limitations of the compact design are apparent; even after running it for several hours to see if warming it up helps. There are benefits to the compact design though; like its predecessor the Wonderboom's is designed to be attached to your bag and go with you and bring music; or supplement your laptop's speakers,as you travel. The new design is easier to attach to your bag; though you will need a carabiner as the small elasticated loop isn't long enough to attach to pretty much anything. Having it on the outside of your bag is even more worry free as the Wonderboom is more water resistant - this time IPX7 which should mean immersion for up to 30 minutes - so its not water proof. I haven't tried 30 minutes of imersion but happily it floats in the bath and carries on playing - and if you go for the bright orange colour means it should be easier to spot it should it float off. The battery life is quoted at 10 hours; and I have certainly had it last 8 hours before charging it back up.The UE is not a speaker for constant use at home - music deserves a more complete sound; it will fill a quiet space with music and goes quite loud - and sound comes out seemingly from all sides. Its a speaker to take to an empty beach - where the long battery life will be a boon; or fill a hotel room with music or a film from your laptop when you get back.
