Before 2010, the only Doctor Who video game to be released was `Destiny of the Doctors' (excluding the 'Top Trumps' games). The game, which was for the Windows PC, focused on the classic series, as it was released before the show's revival in 2005. After that year, it could be seen as surprising that there was no sign of a new Doctor Who video game, despite the fact that the show was and is great material for one. Then, in 2010, the Adventure Games were released, which are still downloadable from the official BBC Doctor Who website (as of March 2011.) Less than a year later, Asylum Entertainment released `Return to Earth' for the Wii and `Evacuation Earth' for the DS.The latter is the subject of this review.`Evacuation Earth' is actually a `Professor Layton' -style puzzle game. However, a Doctor Who logo is stamped on the packaging, and the puzzles are easier. This means that, in comparison to Professor Layton games, this game is aimed at an audience of young children and no older - the focus testing was done by Newham Primary School. It must be said that the plot is quite weak, and that it is almost a Doctor Who cliché:The Doctor and Amy Pond arrive in the future Lake District. They find a village named `ScrapTown,' which provides recycled parts for a transport ship that is about to leave earth. The TARDIS is accidentally built into the infrastructure of the ship, and the Doctor and Amy pond attempt to recover it, which they successfully do. In the process, the Silurians are encountered, and the Daleks arrive in quick succession. For a good set of short Doctor Who games, download the Adventure Games for free. For an excellent DS puzzle game with a science-fiction element, buy the third installment of the Professor Layton series. Despite Evacuation Earth's similarities to the Professor Layton series, it is by no means bad or a rip-off.SCORES: (out of 20)Presentation: 12Graphics: 9Sound: 16Gameplay: 17Lasting Appeal: 14Total out of 100: 68

Well, I am well over the 3+ age group but as someone who uses the Nintendo to keep my wits alert and a fan of our friendly Time Lord, I have to say this game is very impressive, added with the actual voices of the Doctor and Amy along with the Professor Leyton style of text boxes to read. Some of the puzzles are easy, I'm pleased to say, but the mini games are something else. It certainly is a good use of my brain power, calculation and a steady hand is also needed - not much good if you suffer from Parkinsons! Unfortunately, the energy ball mini game stumps me as I don't have a steady hand - no, I don't have Parkinsons (lol)- and so I powered off the device as there is no way to cancel a mini game and nothing in the instructions to tell you how to opt out of the game if you're really stuck! I hope it doesn't reappear when I switch on - I want to confront the Daleks!Overall, a really good game, ideal for keeping the kids and adults alike amused, and makes an ideal gift for birthdays and Christmas. Well done - let's have some more Doctor Who maybe on PSP...

This game is great, I may be over the target age for it but I'm a huge Doctor Who fan.If you like puzzle games like Professor Layton then you'll be in familiar territory, it's like a Professor Layton game but Doctor Who based (same movement structure, character interaction, puzzles etc). Some of the puzzles are quite easy but that's to be expected with the 3+ age guide on the cover. The trickier ones are the mini games where you have to guide energy balls without them getting destroyed.I would put the age guide for this game much higher than 3+ (more like 7+) as I doubt a 3 year old could do most of the puzzles on their own (but I guess playing with a parent would be fine!)Overall a great game!Ideal for Christmas!

We purchased this as a gift for my nine year old son, and he loves it. As we live in the States it is hard sometimes to find Doctor Who items, and especially video games. In fact, this is the first game we have found that is compatible with any system on our side of the Atlantic. The game has challenging puzzles that tests his thinking and reasoning skills, and has the voices of the Doctor and Amy to give it a very real feel. He got the game for Christmas, and now just after the new year is still playing it and enjoying it tremendously.

I was worried that this might be a bit of a sell-out like the Top Trumps game, but my kids are so keen on Doctor Who that it was worth a try - my fears were very much unfounded as the game really captures the humour and quirkiness of the new Doctor perfectly. This is a Professor Layton-Style puzzle adventure which is a familiar format, but with a Doctor Who theme - very cleverly done and well scripted. Will let you know how we get on with it once I can stop the kids squabbling over who has it next!

I bought this for my 8 and 4 1/2 year old who are Doctor Who mad. The 8 year loves it and it has kept him entertained but unfortunately as the game involves all reading the 4 year can't play it by himself. Once the puzzles are explained he can manage some of them.I would say it should have an age of 7+ rather than 3+

This is so much better than the usual run of the mill game where you have to find numerous objects. That is nowe so boring and I am not playing them any more. A bit like Prof Layton, the Dr Who game has puzzles, some of which are really quite, well...er puzzling!! Havent finished it yet but am enjoying it so far.

My son is a Dr Who fan so this was definately must have and so far it hasn't dissappointed as he has been throughly entertained. The level of difficulty is just right as professor layton is not one I recommend for kids unless you have a genius. It was a relief not to hear "I'm stuck" :)

Those who like the "Dr Layton" games will definitely like Dr Who. It's a game with a nice storyline and graphics, lots of puzzles to solve, which will keep you busy for days.
