I thought this was going to be childish, especially when I saw the cartoon worms on the case and on the opening screen, but I was wrong. Some of these training puzzles are really difficult. It is one of a plethora of "brain" games that were released after the success of Brain Training. You start by registering as a student in Professor Wormy's Academy (his name is Dr Lobe, but he's been called "Wormy" that long it seems wrong to call him "Lobe").Once registered with the Wormy Academy you can choose to play "practice" games or you can throw yourself into the "test" to see what score you get. Wormy recommends starting with a test so that you can see how "big your brain is" and then watch it grow (or decrease)over time. The "Practice" takes place over 5 areas of brain activity, each area has 3 types of "training" which are divided into easy, normal and hard.* Analyze- missing link - join the dots- cube game - count the blocks- animal lines - match the pattern* Compute- coin-parison - which group of coins is the largest- add agency - touch 2 groups that equal the top total- written maths - read the question and enter the answer* Identify- shadow shift - match the image with the moving shadow- get in shape - use the shapes to build the image- matchmaker - find the pairs* Memorise- sound bites - replicate the sounds by touching the correct symbols- flash memory - memorise the numbers and symbols- memo-random - memorise images* Think- heavy weight - which weighs the most- path finder - using one connection help an animal meet its friend- bone yard - feed the dog a treatAs you play you qualify for medals from bronze for the lowest ranking, through silver to gold for a score over 250g. It is the awarding of achievement medals along with improvement in the test, which keeps people playing. The "Test" selects one "game" from each of the 5 main areas and, starting with the easiest moves up and down the scale of difficulty depending on if you get the answer right or wrong. At the end of the 5th test area Wormy will give you your brain weight total, then grade and finally what "job" that grade is associated with. This "job" allocation can cause some laughter - a C grade can be equated to Sherlock Holmes and a C+ is given as a Michelangelo, whereas a B+ is a road sweeper, and so on. To be honest the job selection seems to be somewhat random. The "verses" section is great fun. This is one of the games were you only need one cartridge for 2 or more people to play. You can download a temporary file to your friends who are in the same room as you and play against each other to see who scores the most.Scoring on all sections of the game (single play, testing, and verses) all score on a mixture of accuracy and speed. The game allows you up to 4 profiles so you can use one cartridge between a family or you can have multiple profiles for your self.I like mixing things up and playing the games from hard to easy rather than easy to hard. The objective is to fill the spider's web and it is not an easy thing to do, but trying is fun.If I could have added one more thing it would have been a relaxed play mode; something which wasn't against the clock, but that's just me.Big Brain Academy has a great selection of games; and they are games which I have returned to over again since I first received it. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommended to anyone who likes puzzle games and the likes of Brain Training.

Big Brain Academy for the Nintendo DS is a lot like Brain Age. It's a collection of puzzles designed to test and stimulate your intellect. While we enjoy Brain Age, it has numerous issues. You only get 'scored' on each game once a day. The number of games is REALLY limited and many of them can get maxed out within weeks of playing. How much fun is it to get straight 5s on Head Count hard, with no chance of ever improving? I was really happy, then, when Big Brain Academy came along. While it still doesn't have nearly as many games in it as it should have, at least it has a wider selection. In Big Brain Academy, you're not fighting for a low brain age (which I always found to be an EXTREMELY questionable goal).Insead, you're working towards a "big" brain which is much better. There are puzzles split up into five areas - thinking, memorizing, analyzing, computing and identifying. Each area has 3 games, with multiple difficulty levels. So that's 15 games total. You're already far ahead of Brain Age with that quantity, plus the difficulty levels too.You can practice as much as you want, aiming for a gold medal in each game at each difficulty level. As you go, you fill up a 'brain graph' - a pentagon that shows which areas you're best at. When you're ready, you do the actual test. The test randomly chooses a game from each of the 5 areas and sets you at them. It's on a timer, so you do as well as you can within that time limit. At the end, your total brain weight is calculated. This isn't of course "real" - it is more a general scale to show how well you're doing. It also gives you a "type" of brain you have based on what you did well in. Someone who does really well in computing is called a "calculator" - while someone who's great at memorizing and thinking is a "museum curator".The puzzles are simple but fun. They're the type of puzzles that young kids would enjoy but that adults would find entertaining as well. Traditional things such as memory games, box counting, shape recognition and more are the norm here.Just like Brain Age, this game shares the problem of INCESSANT CHATTER from the "helper". You have to go paging through numerous completely meaningless messages to get through some areas. They really need to get a handle on that for future releases.I'm still baffled why they can't have 6 games per area, instead of 3. At least this is a huge step up from Brain Age in that area, but still, there should really be far more games included in the set. It would really help to make this an excellent game, instead of a fun game that has a limited lifetime of enjoyability.

Big Brain academy was first released on DS years ago and entertained many people by being a simplier - yet more fun - version of Dr Kawashima's brain training. This one is suitable for kids and sets tasks to the player such as remembering sounds, figuring out a simple water and pipe puzzle, or computing some hard maths. This game is fun and easy to play - and even challenging for both adults and children alike. The graphical features come in child-like illustrations and I think this is what put most adults off; let me say, that when this was first released, I imported it from Japan and had a ball. My nieces and nephews loved playing this game.I even brought the English version a few weeks ago from Amazon as the game is great fun to play and I had unfortunately lost my previous version. The game features 5 sections - such as compute (mental problems) and memorise (memory puzzles) - and you are rated in these sections by 'weight' (bare with me).. these weights are then added together to give you a total weight and grade on your brain and its performance. You are then graded on this weight - and given a shiny medal to show off on your profile. Sme fo the problems to solve for platinum medals are also hard! This sounds ever-so-familiar with the likes of the 'training' series and Kawashima's games on DS, but I have always preferred this version. Even as an adult, I still haven't gotten all of the platinum medals, and the game is good for a quick 10 minute blast - when on short commutes or even (sorry!) on the toilet. This game was great on release and is great now, ad for the price, you can't really go wrong! If you enjoy taxing brain games, and if you have children to join the ride - I would recommend this as its fun, cheap and simple to play.Good stuff!4****

Big Brain Academy Is Not Your Normal Type Of Game. Unlike Other games You Do Not Have Levels And Storylines, instead Big Brain Academy stimulates your brain with challenges which stretch your intelligence, , doesn't sound fun does it? believe me, it is!Big Brain Academy Is Designed to Test Your Brain And Increase Your Intelligence. Big Brain Academy tests you in five different areas; Think, Memory, Analyse, Compute and Identify. Each are has three different games which tests your intelligence. There are three play options in Big Brain Academy; test, practic eand vs. In test Big Brain Academy tests your intelligence and how much your brain's improved. Your are tested in all five areas and one game from the area is picked at random. After you have completed the test you will be given a brainweight (the heavier the better), a ranking (A to F, with A being the best) and it also says what type of brain you have. In practice yuo can chose what area you want to play in and what game you want to play. you are given a brain weight for that area and a medal (determing how big your wight is, the medals range from bronze to gold with gold being the best) the highest scores are then safed.. In vs. you can connect your ds with other people's ds and see who is the most intelligent, and best of all you only need one copy of the game. This game is very entertaining and fun, but some games are much better than others and you cant play this game all the time as you will get bored that way, it's aimed more at the casual gamers. The games do after a while get boring, but if you leave it while and play on it again you will not find them so boring. I highly recommend this game, but it's not for everyone.

Fun, addictive and it does actually train your brain! This game isn't about easy or hard, puzzles or adventures, you're simply training your brain. Classic IQ test style with different activities to test different aspects of your brain - and you'd be surprised how addictive it is to beat your previous! The use of the touchscreen is brilliant; using the top screen usually as a guide to what to do on the touchscreen, pressing correct answers or drawing lines in correct places.Firstly you can select from 1 of 4 game profiles. This is the only negative i would put against this game, as I've already found the want for more, and having to delete a friends profile to start up another - but don't let that put you off...Having selected your profile you can dive straight into a test, or practise at the 5 different sections being tested (identify, think, memorize, analyse and compute)... There are 3 completely different activities per section that, when you come to do a test, are selected at random. When you're attempting a test, you will have 60 seconds to complete as many as mini-tests within a section as possible; and the difficulty of the mini-test gradually increases as you get more correct.Having completed all 5 sections, you will then be presented with a weight for your brain, calculated from your performance in all 5 sections; a grade, and a profession to compare your brain to.This is a great game, and you'll soon be performing hundreds of test after one another, just hoping for that game you know you can perform at, to peak your score that little bit more!

This is by far the best DS game out there. It's fun, educational and funny. The games are great, no big fighting or weapons, just games like Touch the heaviest item, Memorising Sounds, and even solving maths problems. The game tests you across 5 cateogries, Memorize, Analyze, Identify, Compute and Think, each one containing 3 games. You play one of the 3 games from each cateogry, not like the one on the Wii where you play all 3 games in a cateogry in one test. Afterwards the headmaster "Dr. Lobe" will give you your brain weight, brain type and grade. I got as high as 1,845 grams the other day and got the brain of a Museum Curator and the grade A.If you want to do just one game, go to Practice, where you can work at your own pace (You can choose cateogries, games and difficulty here) and win medals for your efforts. You earn a Bronze if you get over 50 grams, Silver if it's over 150, Gold if it's over 250 and Platinum if you get a really high score like 370 grams. Perfect for brushing up on games that give you trouble! This game is really good fun and you can register up to 4 people here. The whole family will love it, and I highly recommend Big Brain Academy! Thanks for readingUPDATE 15 May 2009: Just scored 1,947 grams.

I disagree with the previous reviewer who thinks that this game is more suitable for under 10s and not for adults. I recently bought a DS to take on holiday with a group of mates (all in our twenties and thirties) and this game proved to be a massive winner with everyone. There are five categories (think, identify, memorise, calculate and analyse) and each category has three individual and varied challange games. The games are good because they don't only rely on mathematics but require a variety of skills and an all round intelligence is required togain a good overall score. The games may appear simple at first but get deceptively tricky as you get deeper into the game and the time limit makes even the coolest heads panic.Getting a top score requires patience, practice and no little skill and getting a good score allows significant bragging rights to fellow gamers. Getting a poor score can be humiliating and lead to a burning need to play again and prove to everyone that you're not as stupid as the game implies.

I am playing both this and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training games and I like them both for different reasons. Dr K's game is more 'professional' looking and has the brain age grading system, but I find Big Brain Academy is more fun to play, and as a result I tend to play it more frequently - at least once a day whereas with Dr K I will skip a few days here and there. With Big Brain Academy, the colourful presentation of the test is stimulating in itself, as are the cartoon-like characters used in the game with a touch of humour (note how when playing the game where you have to draw a line to make the animals meet up, romance sometimes blossoms!)As a previous reviewer said, the game may look easy but it isn't,especially the further you go in the round, and the ticking countdown adds to the pressure! The highest mark I've managed so far is a 'B' - I want an 'A'!!!! I think most young people would enjoy playing this one more than Brain Training, although both are very good indeed. Recommended.

i finally agreed to let my son have a DS for educational purposes (i knew i would cave in at some point and this was a very handy excuse). We bought the Brain Trainer and the Big brain academy at the same time. Both games are great but the Big Brain academy attracts the children straight away. The bright colours and pictures sucker them into learning without them realising it and suddenly they are very eager to find out who has the heaviest brain amongst friends and family. As a parent you can see them improving every time they use it and they take pride in every gram of brain weight. An added bonus for us was that it is multi-lingual,so my son can practice in both of his languages and also in the French that he is learning at school. But its not just for the children. We bought the DS and the first day of our holidays and by the end of it we were all hooked! A great buy that the children will love to try and beat you at.

I have this game as well as Brain Training (first one), and would say that overall, this game is more challenging and probably the better out of the two. After getting gold medals in every catagory, I then discovered that there's a platinem metal to be won too, which restarted the challenge again, and after 3 months, I'm still enjoying it!The "test" is much harder than on braintraining (I got aged 20 on my first attempt of braintraining and found it far too easy, with nothing to benchmark and improve on), and it requires you to perform well in all 5 categories. After weeks of getting C+ and B-, I've finally got an A, although I believe there might be an A+ too, so I'm still trying. The only downside is that after a test,it doesn't show you individual scores in each category, so you don't know how close this was to your practice score.I would recommend this to anyone who finds the first braintraining game too easy.

We got both Jr Brain Trainer and Big Brain Academy for Christmas, and this is the one that my kids (7 & 9) play with more out of the two. Jr Brain Trainer is far more babyish and limited. This one is more tricky, but easier for you to control because you can pick the bit you want to do and practice (play) at it as much as you like, as well as taking the tests and seeing 'how big your brain is'.Even for adults it's a challenge - and my 9 yr old is better than I am in some areas! My high score is a B- and I have a University degree! On the other hand my 7 yr old enjoys it too, even though some sections are a bit beyond him.He just plays with the bits he likes...If you are trying to decide between Jr Brain Trainer and Big Brain Academy then I would definitely go with this one.

I greatly enjoyed Brain Training for the DS but was concerned that this would be more of the same. I've had it on import for a few months now and it is truly a great game. It's a lot more fun and less serious than Brain Training. You are spurred on to play more and more to get bronze, silver and gold medals (you can then try for the extremely-hard-to-get platinum medals). This is not a game you'd play for hours on end like New Super Mario Bros. or Castlevania, it is for short bursts of play when you get the urge to test your brain or beat your friends/family.Multiplayer is just brilliant - a real laugh playing with just 2 or 3 people - it can only be better with up to 8!Seriously,if I could only have one game for the DS, it would be Big Brain Academy.

I got my DS as a treat for my hols & really fancied the puzzles rather than midless gaming. It stores several peoples scores so you can share it with family members or mates & see who is the "brainiest" amoung you...its quite addictive & competition can soon break out as everyone wants to increase their score. I definitely wouldnt say its easy to complete & after a few goes you will have "completed it all"...I have played with this an awful lot & getting gold medals in the different categories is no mean feet....its very interesting to see how different each persons brain works...some of the tasks i am brilliant at & some i just cant do properly no matter how hard i train!this is great fun foradults & children alike...definitely i would recommend it

Having used `Brain Training', my sole reason for getting a DS, and being very impressed by it I decided to get this one too to add a bit of variety. It is good and well worth the money. It compares pretty well to 'Brian Training' and `More Brain Training' but is less serious and a fair bit more fun.If you liked `Brain Training' you will probably like this one.I think this is more suitable for young children than `Brain Training' and `More Brain Training', my boys (9 and 2) love it.I think that `Brain Training' and `More Brain Training' are probably better for you, purely subjective opinion here with no hard evidence to back it up,but we found this more fun.Of the three it was this one that really got us hooked.

If you had to buy just one of this ever increasing genre, then I can definatly recommend this game over all the others. Why..???1. Despite many people saying it has 'childish graphics', the game does boast 15 different challenges (under 5 catagories). And within these, 3 levels of difficulty. Thus giving you 45 training sessions when in practice mode (achieving bronze, silver, gold and even platinum medals depending on how high (brain weight) you score).2. You are tested in each of the 5 cataories to give you your final brain weight plus a grade.3. Best of all is the multiplayer (single card as well!) mode, where up to 4 players can download and challenge each other to see who has the heaviest brain.
