I have purchased and played every Professor Layton game so I could not wait to get my hands on this. However, I had pre-ordered for delivery on day of release and it did not arrive! I was off on holiday so thought I would just have to wait three weeks and be patient. Funnily enough, while I was away I was curious to read what people were saying about it on Amazon and saw the reviews about 'London Life' missing from the European games. I managed to purchase an import copy while away and here is my verdict.Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call (or the Last Specter)The game was every bit as good as the last three. In fact, I think the story was better than some of the other far-fetched and anti-climax storylines. The addition of Layton's first assistant plus finding out how the Professor met Luke really added to the game. The puzzles are similar to what has gone before but some were harder and there are also new additions, such as solving puzzles mid-story to move the game along (you don't get picarats for these ones but they are pretty crucial to get to the next chapter).I found that there were rather a lot of animated scenes, more so than before, and I found them a bit annoying. The other thing that really got me were the comments that kept popping up on screen. So if you were tapping around for hint coins you would get several comments first from the Professor, Emmy and Luke before the screen would clear, and if you happened to tap that spot again they would all come up again and obscure the screen. Some may not have minded, but I certainly found it irritating. However, the game itself is superb and the franchise goes from strength to strength. I could not put this game down and I am already impatient for the next one! Here is where 'London Life' can keep you going...London LifeThanks to the prompt and informative reviews on here, I found out about this extra game. As I started playing, I wasn't too bothered about whether I would have had it on the UK version or not, but it quickly became addictive. It's a bit like an 'Animal Crossing' or 'Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams' game whereby you have to build up wealth and happiness to move on. Plus there are main story quests and side quests (around 247 in all) that you can take on and fulfil. The nice thing is, Little London, where this is set, features many characters from all the Layton games, as well as well-known landmarks such as the university or Scotland Yard or the museum. I am enjoying it and just as addicted! It is a real, real shame that it was not included for the European market. I am surprised that Nintendo did not reward its loyal followers in this way. Perhaps they can include it as a download because it is definitely a great addition. That said, it does not take away from the Spectre game (at least you don't have to listen to bad, fake English accents!) but I still felt I could only give 4 stars not 5 as my review is for the overall package.Even if you can't get hold of an import, I would highly recommend this game to new and old Laytoners alike.

This Game is brilliant! It really is. I have played every game in the series and they just seem to get better and better! There are loads more puzzles, Characters who actually have more of a personality- In fact, If you do enough of the puzzles that they offer through the game, you unlock a special ''episode'' that has a sort of behind the scene feel to it.I wont give much of the Story Line away since i don't want to spoil it for you:Basically, all your questions on how the Professor and Luke met are answered. Luke's Father Clark Triton is the Mayor of Misthelery and sends you a letter pleading for help about the Spectre that Is destroying the town. When it says ''His toughest case yet''it's not kidding as this has lots of twists for you! If your one who likes a good storyline, but also makes you think and think ''wow really?'' then this game is perfect for you!And for those who thought that the game does all the work in solving the storyline, this time, the players have more of a say in the storyline! This time throughout the game they're are sort of recaps that are alot like the previous ''puzzle battles'' from Lost future, where you have to answer the questions that Layton gives you about the story so far, which is a nice touch i think as it gives you more participation in the storyline and tests your knowledge to the game, so make sure you pay attention or else your responses could be quite funny! For those who think to yourself '' what about Layton London Life?'' It really isn't much of a big deal to me when you have this amazing game! The game is called 'Professor Layton and the Spectre's call' so really, the main game is the most important and to me, that's the best part. It's also longer then the previous games if your wondering. The minigames are pretty good! Of course they're only ever a little change from the game, but they do make it even more fun! You have A train which you need to get through all the stations and to the end, A fish which you need to collect all the coins by placing bubbles making it bounce, and a puppet show that is alot like the sticker book! I find it funny when i put the wrong demand in.Out of all i give this game 5/5 for longer gameplay, amazing storyline, Characters. The only Cons really, are that there are a few puzzles that are the same as previous ones, and that the minigames dont feel as good as the previous ones, but they dont bother me much, i just want this to be an honest and thorough review! This game is definitely for you if you like adventures and puzzles that make your brain work! I encourage you! :D

I think this has to be the best Layton so far. It is jam packed full of puzzles ranging from fairly easy ones to ones that are so hard it nearly drives you mad trying to work them out. My poor Husband has had cries for help so many times during this game that he said he may as well have played the entire thing himself :-) Even he who has a really logical mind was stymied by one particular puzzle and announced it couldn't be done. I did prove him wrong and through sheer persistence and bloody mindedness managed to work it out myself. You tend to become rather anti-social whilst playing this game as it is so compulsive and I simply couldn't bear going to bed leaving a puzzle unsolved.I did draw the line one night when I simply had to cheat because it was nearly 2.00am and I was still struggling. The graphics are good as usual and so are the voices and the music although I hardly ever have the sound turned on as I find it a bit of distraction. You have to check these things out though.I thought the story was better than some of the other Layton games even though it was a little sad at the end.My only slight moan is that some of the video clips were a bit too long and I got rather impatient.I loved the mini games in particular whacking the mice which sent me into a total frenzy. I shall probably go back and play this game all over again at some point but in general I was very pleased with my score, the highest I have ever achieved to date.A superb, well thought out game indeed and very highly recommended.

Ignore the bad reviews, they are just childish people who are sore about not getting it all. This is a great game, it is everything you expect from the usual Prof Layton games.DO NOT be put off buying it because of the "missing game". Having played 'London Life' it isn't that great. It isn't the acclaimed "100+ RPG". It takes much less time than that and is a joke to call it an RPG. It could easily be mistaken for a Gameboy colour game. You are not missing anything. If you want a good Professor Layton game with the same great puzzles as you have come to expect then buy it, don't hesitate. If you are thinking of taking the risk of buying an American copy, don't1) The game really isn't worth it.2)There is no garuntee it will work on your DS (the bad reviews fail to mention this)3) I'm guessing you are buying this because you want a fun puzzle game? yes. If you want to have an RPG buy something that was made to be an RPG, not something stuck into a bundle. If you want an RPG that DOES last a long time, then buy this AND Skyrim, or pick up a Final Fantasy game. Just don't be put off that 'London Life' isn't here, it really isn't worth the hassle.

I love all the Professor Layton games and this one is no different - it contains a huge variety of puzzles and some lovely graphics. If you have played the previous Professor Layton games then there isn't much new here - same navigation, tricky puzzles, mini-games, stuff to collect on your travels and a bonkers story. However, it is still charming and very engaging (I have basically ignored my family since I got it!)On the downside (and these are little niggles rather than big complaints), I thought the game wasn't as long as some of the previous ones and there was slightly less variety in the settings (the trip to London seemed a bit of a distraction, just put in to stop all the action from being in one place, the town). Also, I thought the puzzles were a bit easier - in previous games I've had to go back to try things again, but not this time. Maybe I'm getting better at them, or maybe it is the inclusion of the "Super Hint", but I didn't have to take to the Internet for assistance this time!Anyway, these are niggles and don't really detract from a fun and enjoyable game, perfect for all puzzle fans.

When I played my first Professor Layton game, I found I did it ok, only now and again did I you the hints, since then however I've got into HOG, through [...] and now I'm finding I'm struggling with this game, because it's completely different, I waited to but it, because then I could get it cheaper. It's a great game, typical Professor Layton, and I think it's the first in the series, as it starts with a girl helping Professor, and not Luke, he comes in later, I wish I'd known that, great puzzles, and story line, it's a well thought out game, and the person who is kind of helping the 'Spectre' is quite a shock, although I've not met the Spectre yet!The game certainly makes your brain work,or at least it does mine, and recently I found out the Professor Layton games are ending, so make the most of the games.

I've got them all so this one was a welcome addition to the family. There's a lot of 'movie' clips to try & keep the story going which I'm no really interested in and to be perfectly honest, I think the story line is very similar to all the rest. I get the Layton collection solely for the puzzles which range from very simple to extremely taxing so a good range for everyone. Whereas last time there was an extra little car mini puzzle, this time its a train and also a fish game and so far they've both proved too difficult for me but I'm starting again soon so I'll have a better attempt. If you love a good selection of puzzles then this is the one for you - Personally,I love all the Laytons and can play them over and over as they're long enough not to remember all the answers!

I bought this for my girlfriend. She's a big fan of the series and was very excited when she found out about this one.If you've played any of the games before you'll know what to expect. My girlfriend finished in it a couple of sittings, she couldn't put it down. In all maybe 10-12 hours of gameplay.None of the puzzles are overly hard. You can buy hints with coins collected in game, so you rarely get stuck. It's even possible to avoid some of the puzzles and look for more coins if needed. The story is charming as usual, with just slight hints that a Japanese studio produced it.Personally I'd want a little more play for my pound, but it made my girlfriend happy and I couldn't ask for more than that.

Great story, setting and characters. Puzzles of good quality. One complaint: One to two of the puzzles weren't really puzzles; they involve dropping fruit and placing trampolines to bounce them into baskets. This kind of thing is better suited to one of the mini games rather than as a part of the main story puzzles. However overall very good, as usual.Spoiler alertOne word of warning regarding the story, if you are buying this for a younger person you might want to know that one of the good characters that you meet in the game actually dies during final scene. Overall the message is positive but this death a little hard to take.

I have all of the games in this series, and have enjoyed them all. I received this latest one as a Christmas preseent and had completed it within a couple of days. I have then re-discovered my others, and have been playing them too. My only criticism of this one is that there is just too much nattering on and those scenes with the characters! I don't know if I'm alone, but I buy these for the puzzles, and although I appreciate there has to be a story to go along with it, the story does seem to be taking over somewhat! Maybe others like this, but personally, I just want to get puzzling!!!!

Having just bought a Nintendo DS, I love the games. I've done Sherlock Holmes and Titanic, and by far, Professor Layton is brilliant. The Spectre's Call is my first Professor, so I've got lots to plough through. Its a great game, having played Titanic and Sherlock Holmes, and completed them in a couple of days (I only play for a couple of hours at any given time), I started Professor Layton, Spectre's Call on Boxing Day, playing it for a couple of hours every day up to today, 1 January, and I'm still no nearer finishing it. A great buy (well, I didn't buy it, its pressie off my hubby):)

This is another great game in the Layton stable. If you haven't come across Professor Layton before then the basic premise is that you have to solve puzzles to help professor Layton in his quest. There are enough puzzles to keep the most ardent of officionados happy. Some are fairly easy and others extremely tricky. The storyline alongside is good but a tad lengthy. Sometimes I felt it dragged which is why I have given four stars instead of five. I like the way Luke si introduced in this one and we get to know more about him. If you like puzzles I would definitely recommend this game.

I really enjoyed this game and love how the puzzles fit in with the overall story. The minigames of this game are very good, particularly liked the mouse alley game, however didn't quite understand the purpose of collecting the items (eg shell) and when I got them all I expected something to happen, but it didn't - made this feel a bit of a waste of time.I found the puzzles to be very varied and some of the initial ones seemed amazingly easy, then the later ones incredibly hard, to the extent I looked up a solution on a walkthrough website just so I could get to the next one!

31.12.2011

This game is a fantastic follow up to Professor Layton and the Lost Future and is a really good buy! The quality is outstanding and the puzzles are amazing, I would recommend it to all ages as a great game. The only thing that is slightly ennoying is the lack of imagination that goes into working the puzzles into the plot but appart from that the plot is intriging and the puzzles are great for all ability levels! The mini games are also lots of fun and really enjoyable extra features. Over all this really good value for money and a must buy for Professor Layton lovers...
