I played Professor Layton and the Curious village last year and enjoyed it but I didn't think it was as good as all its hype. It sort of put me off buying its sequel... now I'm wondering why I delayed for so long.Gamplay- The same as Curious village with a mixture of heavy dialogue to build up the story, short bits of footage and plenty of puzzles to entertain and fustrate. The only thing I would tweak with this is to put more footage in because reading all the dialogue does get slightly tiresome and repetitive but its not a huge problem. The main gameplay is the puzzle, most of the first puzzles are fairly easy to build your confidence with them gradually getting harder (Don't even mention the knight's puzzle I was at that for hours and still haven't completed it)I found some of the puzzles too difficult to do on my own and unfortunatly had to cheat a little which made me feel awful. However the majority of puzzles are just challenging enough to keep you entertained without causing too much of a headache. = 7/10Visuals- Looks a lot brighter and crisp than Curious village and all the different characters and wonderful settings are varied and beautiful. The only problem with visuals is the cut scenes are on the bottom screen so isn't as visually good if it was on the top screen. = 7/10Plot- I personally thought the start was a little slow and was worried that it was going to be boring but it picked up a lot during the second chapter. The story is of Layton's mentor finding the Elysian box (similar to the Greek myth of Pandora's box of whoever opens it dies) Layton worried for his mentor goes to see him to find he is dead and the box is missing. Layton along with Luke and the stand-offish Officer Chelmy are on the case which leads them to the glamorous Molentary Express which is full of intriguing and odd passangers (Sammy is my favourite :D). As their journey progresses they arrive in the creepy town of Folsense which has a strange connection with the Elysian box and is inhabited by a vampire lord. The plot keeps you on your toes always asking questions, is there really a vampire, does the box really kill people, why doesn't anything age in Folsense and more? Nothing will prepare you for the end, lets just say get the tissues ready! = 9/10Characters- Right I'm just going to throw it out there- I hate, hate, hate Luke. He is the most annoying child in the world and his voice- grr. I also found Layton rather annoying always talking about what a gentlemen should do, god Layton let your hair down a little! Other than the two main characters the others are hilarious and bizzare especially the try hard rockstar Sammy. The quirky characters really make the game. = 8/10Additions- The extras on the game are weekly puzzles which I haven't done yet and set of unlockable extra hard puzzles unlocked with special requirments. During the game there is a Hamster mini-game where you had to get a very chubby hamster fit, another is to build up a camara which took me ages fiddling with the little pieces! Once it is built you can take pictures of certain areas and do a spot the difference. = 7/10Overal= 38/50 A fantastic game that is much better than the previous game, I couldn't put it down for the two weeks it took me to complete it.

Whilst this is the second Professor Layton game, it's the first one I have played. I enjoy puzzle solving a great deal so this game naturally appeals to me enormously. The game's interface is clear and simple, with a good feel for progression and a natural style of development. The plot of the story is fairly basic - find Pandora's box and unravel the mysteries associated with it. The story takes up quite a lot of the game to be honest - far more than the puzzle solving aspect. This is both a good thing and a bad thing as the full motion video cut scenes are a joy to watch and listen to, although the lengthy stretches of reading text and tapping through conversations can ultimately feel as if the game is slowing down sometimes. And after all, you've bought this game for the puzzle solving, right? So onto the puzzles - they are varied and, for the most part, reasonably taxing. There is a points based system that reveals how difficult the puzzle you are about to do is in comparison to others - the more points available, the harder you can expect the puzzle to be. Many puzzles rely on lateral thinking too, which is refreshing as pure skill based puzzles often lead to monotony in my opinion. There are also mini-games along the way involving training a pet hamster and brewing different types of tea, both of which are far more enjoyable than they sound. But something I have been most impressed by with this game is the built in summary "The Story So Far" that automatically plays when you load a saved game. It graciously reminds you of what you are currently supposed to be doing and which direction you likely need to put your focus. With a casual game such as this, it is a very valuable reminder for the player who may not play the game for days or weeks between commutes. If you've ever sat on the train with a book and re-read the previous page at the start of your journey, you'll know what I mean. The game has legs too - I'm approximately 100 puzzles down after 12hrs or so gameplay. Once you've solved a puzzle, for the most part I don't think there is much enjoyment necessarily in re-solving it but I'm glad that this game isn't over in 6hrs already.Overall, it's good fun. The voice-overs are good if a little caricature sometimes (the cock-er-ney boy is typically irritating sometimes!) but presentation of this game is excellent.

Well i got Pandora's box for my Christmas -to go with my DS Lite.I have not played Curious BOx because my muim got mixed up and got me this instead ;).Well, finished after maybe 2/3 weeks of play, which is a pretty good time, but i did get very addicted and often played for about 6hrs a day, during the holidays!Even after going through it maybe twice more, i have only got 136 puzzles out of 150, i think.SOme puzzles, such as the 'Find Tom' one, are obvious, while others are just too hard!! (Cheat website much anyone?)I found the end great, with lots and lots of twists- i.e you find something out and then its not tru because its impossible, then it is true, then something totally new appears!Quite surprising, and very, very good.Great characters, and the hamster( My aptly named 'Chubbs' is now very fit- in fact, to thin, maybe hould take him back up to 2? I mean, he looks as if hes anorexic or bulimic or something!!!), and tea minigames(took me aaagggeess to find all ingredients and combinations-but great, inspired and very fun!) are great! The graphics are great, and not to complicated ( though Katya and her grandad looked like something out of Yu-Gi-Oh!) and the little sequences of video were captivating.I would do an *in 3 words* thing-buit this deserves more words!!!So: In 5 wirds:Addictive, enthralling, (very) clever, inspired, and really, really fun!!! (times like infinity!!)By (a very bored now i'm done!) Scottish 11yr old girl.Oh- and i'm looking for Curious Village now too(but i don't want to buy it yet) so im looking out in libraries and rental places now!! (Might just do a review on that when i finish too ;P )Strarted on Brain Training now- quite Boring after about 3 tests!(And the speaking colours test always comes up!! It never picks it up when i say yellow!!!)Well bye! Hope this was helpful( like my ramblings ever are- but anyway..)*****

Finally, we are treated to a second fix of Professor Layton! I pre-ordered this way back in July for my mum as a suprise as she loved it. unfortunately, she hasnt wanted to play it until she finishes decorating otherwise she says she will never get the decorating done!So i decided to play it. And i have just completed it about 2 minutes ago! I have to say, i think it's a lot better than the first one, and that was great. I love the idea of travelling on the Molentary Express. And stopping off at places to explore. The puzzles were quite easy at first so i was concerned that there would be no challenge here, but they did get harder! so much so that i have to admit, i looked on the net for solutions to some of them.this was after spending over an hour myself trying to figure them out. The story line is brilliant! and the cutscenes are awesome, i could just watch a whole game full of them. I love the accents too. Also you get this fat hamster you have to excercise to make him lose weight, and you get to name him. He's so cute! Even though i've completed the main game, i still have about 20 puzzles i need to complete, and also the extra's too which i wont go too much into. There's also a thing as you go along where if you get certain puzzles right you get ingriediants to brew your own tea. i wasnt keen on this feature at first, but as you explore places, you see some people need a drink and you have to brew the right tea up for them, it's actually really good!I loved this game, i loved the storyline, i cant wait for number 3 although i shall be patient! lol. enjoy!

This is an excellent follow up to one of the DS's best titles. For the uninitiated, the Layton games are a mix of brain teasers and puzzles, mixed with a graphic adventure that follows the tale of the Professor investigating the disappearance of an old friend. There are more puzzles in this than the original, and the game is a little longer, and it must be said the puzzles aren't quite up to the high standard of the original. There are a lot of puzzles similar to one another, and many of them are run-of-the-mill sliding block or arithmetic puzzles. That's not to say it isn't fun - it's still of a very high standard, it's just the first game set the bar so high.On the positive side, the presentation and plot are a big improvement on the original. Likewise, the various minigames you can play while exploring, give some much needed variety to the proceeding.I'd certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the original. If you haven't played either though, I'd recommend 'Curious Village' over this one as your first purchase.Note: This review was based on the identical 'Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box', which is the North American version and is identical in all but name. Unlike some other reviewers here, I paid to import this game by post - downloading ROMs from the net is both illegal and I'm sure highly offensive to the people who put effort into creating this software.

I have just completed this fantastic game and had to let everyone know how marvelous it is. If you are lucky enough to have played the first game then expect more of the same - relentless puzzles and incredible cut scenes (although in this case they are all saved up for the end, but what an end!). If you are new to the Layton franchise then look forward to some ingenious puzzles and some really frustrating, but ultimately satisfying, mini games. Our adventure starts in London, quickly moves to Paris and then we join the Molentary Express on its journey through to the village of Folsense and it's mysterious secrets. Folsense itself is bigger than St Mystere from the first game and the puzzles are spaced out more, which means more exploration. The puzzles start off rather easy and do seem easier then the first Layton adventure, but the difficult puzzles are obtained once you have mastered the various (really good fun too!)mini games. The mysteries keep on coming in this game and there are more of the unusual characters we encountered from the first game (including a few old faces, like Granny Riddleton and her puzzle shack). All in all, expect more of the same in the sequel. This is a game that should be on every discerning DS owners wish list.Cup of tea anyone?

I love this game, and I am just sorry that there are not more games out there like this one.It follows the story of Professor Layton and Luke once again on a magical mystery tour. The puzzles do start off very easy, but I can see why, as I have now moved onto puzzles that my partner is also finding very difficult to solve, which is why I agree that this is no game for anyone under the age of ten, there are games designed for kids that age, and they would find them alot more fun. I would say that the only part of this game suitable for a child that young would be the hamster mini game where you have to help a hamster lose weight. Speaking of hamsters, there are three mini games in total alongside the main game itself, which are a welcome break from puzzle solving, as trust me, your brain will soon start to hurt. I love the graphics of this game, particularly when you watch the pre programmed scenes, and as another viewer says this would make a great tv series or film. The story line is brilliant, and not at all predictable like I first thought. I cannot give too much away here, but play the game and you will see what I mean. I have not yet finished the game, but can honestly say that I am addicted, and just felt I had to write a review now.

I disagree with people that say that this is not a game for the very young. My 6 year old daughter has been glued to it for the last 2 days and is solving lots of puzzles on her own (admittedly some have been lucky guesses but lots of them are very accessible and many others I can explain the logic behind to her). Even if it was just for the amount of reading she's been doing over the weekend, this is a winner. Not much of the reading material she brings home from school elicits the number of WOWS and OHHS that Professor Layton does and she is utterly captivated by the enigmatic storyline and the many quirky characters. Which doesn't mean that this is a substitute for books...but it's nonetheless a joy to read together and work on the puzzles with your child, and I can't recommend it enough. From the point of view of an adult, the puzzles feel much easier this time and there is a deja vu sense to it as Pandora's box is structured in the same way as the first game. Still, with all this in mind, I would buy it again. There is so much to be enjoyed in the design, the beautiful detail, the delicious mysteries, it's all a treat to the senses as much as a bit of a brain shake... so scrumptious, you just want to eat this game. More, please.

I've just lost a weekend to this game, finally completed in 12 hours 10 mins and very proud of myself! The format is identical to 'PL and the Curious Village', so if you like that, you'll like this. Over 130 different puzzles; it might be my imagination by they seemed to be slightly easier than on the CV game, (or maybe I just knew what to expect), the back story is more interesting and more difficult to second-guess (I'm sure I wasn't the only one to work out waaaaay in advance that the people in CV were robots!) although there are some holes in the story that weren't properly filled, but that's just me nit-picking. The mini games are also good fun, brewing the perfect tea and getting the tubby hamster into shape have kept me quiet for several hours! This game does very much what it says on the box, you'll either love it or loath it, but if you're into logic puzzles then this is worth every penny; the narrative style makes it much more interesting than just a game with a plain series of puzzles and it really does hold the attention. Plus you get to see Layton engaged in a sword duel while trying to keep hold of his hat - worth the money for that alone!

In the second installment of the Professor Layton series, the eponymous scholar and his self-proclaimed apprentice receive a troubling letter from Dr. Andrew Schrader, the mentor to our gentlemanly hero. The letter tells of a box which is thought to kill anyone who opens it. Believing he has the answer as to why, the doctor plans to open the box. The worried duo rush to his aid, only to find him dead at the scene. The only clues to the doctor's line of thinking before he opened the box is a strange unmarked train ticket, and the mysterious box itself.A beautiful story with lots of twists and turns, packed with puzzles that will have you scratching your head and wishing you hadn't wasted your last hint coin,Professor Layton and Pandora's Box is an interesting sequel to the Curious Village tale. However, if you're not satisfied by throwaway explanations for bizarre phenomena and have difficulty suspending your disbelief, you might not enjoy this one so much. If you like action and swordfights, take a trip on the Molentary Express! As before, there are extras once the game is completed, as well as little mini-games for play during the game itself.

I just got this game today after enjoying the first one and have been playing it non stop. The format is similar to the first one, the maps and menus and the way you walk around. The game starts with a letter from Dr Schrader informing you that he has possesion of the Elysian Box, otherwise known as Pandora's Box. This box is thought to kill anyone who opens it. Luke and Layton decide to visit Dr Schrader, however when they arrive the Doctor is dead...There are 150 puzzles to solve and several minigames. This time you have to collect the pieces of a camera, exercise a hamster and make the perfect cup of herbal tea. You get the ingredients, gizmos and toys for the minigame from completing puzzles.Plus if you have completed the first professor Layton game you can type in the code for the hidden door which you get in this game. Once you open the hidden door you get another code to use in this game. The graphics are really good , there are lots of short films throughout the game where the graphics are especially brilliant. The sound and music is also good. I would recommend this game to anyone 9+ who enjoys solving puzzles.*****

I completed this game in a few days over the Christmas period and on the whole enjoyed it. Some of the puzzles are obscure and seem to be set by someone with a twisted sense of humour. The graphics are good and story takes you to several different locations. Granny's shack is also avalible in these is case you miss a puzzle or two.You have to gather various ingredients to make tea for the townsfolk, if you don't give the correct tea mixture to a character then you can't really move on and have to pace about until they become thirsty again which can be frustrating. I will hold my hands up and say two or three of the puzzle's did not make any sense to me and i did go on internet for walkthroughs for these,as otherwise i would not be able to continue. If you have't completed a certain number of puzzles, spoken to certain characters and received tea ingredients, you can't progress any further. There are some mini puzzles, ie building a hamster, who will then sniff out hint coins for you. In summery, this game can be frustrating, but highly addictive any enjoyable, i found it slightly more enjoyable than the first.

Loved and completed the first one so i just knew i had to get this one asap, and my i was not disapointed!!A new great storyline complete with fantastic videos and great puzzles to keep you hooked for hours on end. Mind you i was abit shocked that after playing for over 15hrs and couldnt find my save file, turns out my silly sod of a fiance (who i got hooked onto the game, along with his parents)overwrit my save file with his,not a happy bunny was I (starting BACK all the way to the BEGINNING!!) Mind you all got forgiven and i completed it within 9hrs inside just a week.If you love puzzles games, and this one has 150+ bear that in mind, then you will love this. Im just looking out for the next one :)OH before i forget,do NOT!!! buy this game without INSTRUCTIONS or THE BOX!!! This is VERY IMPORTANT as there is a train ticket inside the box that you need for a puzzle. Without this your screwed!!! And unless you can guess the answer you cant continue the game. So buy this game from NEW, i know its more money but at the end of the day you want a game you can complete.Enjoy and get puzzling :)

My husband bought me a nintendo for Xmas together with some games- Jewel Quest solitaire and "Curious Village" being two of them. I enjoyed Curious Village so much that once I had completed it, I treated myself to Pandoras Box.If you haven't tried Professor Layton, treat yourself now but I do think it is aimed more at teenagers and adults, as some of the puzzles can be very difficult- or is it me?!I like this game because it isn't so totally mind numbingly addictive as Jewel Quest but beware you do get hooked on Professor Layton! The footprint trail leads you there and everywhere and its great when you find little hints and "spot prizes" (camera parts, hamster games and tea ingredients- what weird mind ever thought we'd wait eagerly to acquire these)! The puzzles themselves are a good mix and you can at least get other people involved in solving them- good for family holidays. Yes on occasion I do resort to cheats on the internet- but I call that using my initiative so guilty conscience eased! I don't know what the sound effects are like because I switch them off!Overall a great game.

Hello I'm an autistic adult gamer. This is my review on Professor Layton 2/Diabolical Box - DS game.Hi I'm not very good at puzzles & it takes me extremely long time to finish puzzles but I enjoy Professor Layton because of the good storyline. I also bought the first one Professor Layton/Curious Village a while back & enjoyed it too. But anyway's I just started on the second one Professor Layton 2/Diabolical Box ds game & am enjoying it just as much as the first one. Not to give to much away Professor Hershel Layton's mentor is killed at the beginning. But that's all I'm saying you have to play the rest of the game to see the rest of the storyline unravel it's self. This is simply a good game.By the way there making two more Professor layton games after this one for the ds. They've already released Professor Layton 3/The last Time Travel it can be found on ebay the jap version. The other one is just now being released over in japan Professor Layton 4/The flute of Malevolent Destiny.Get this game you'll truly enjoy it I know I am.Happy Gaming!
