This is fab! A really simple but splendid idea which should appeal to a wide range of people. I am happy to go Mario Karting with the best of them, but in more reflective moments, sitting down and developing a skill (and I do feel that this game can develop a skill beyond just being good at a particular game) is great fun.The Art Academy consists of a series of lessons which teach you the basic controls, then show you the basics of sketching and painting in different styles. You are led through the lessons step by step by Vincent the artist who demonstrates each step, then allows you to complete the step yourself. You can save the lessons at any point - some take longer than others - and your completed works of art can be saved to the game card. It's a shame that there isn't a way to get the pictures off the DS though. I have been amazed at how good the few pictures I have done so far look not because they are great works of art, but because they look something like what they are supposed to look like! My art teacher from my school days would be amazed as creativity with pencils and paint really isn't my gift! The other part of Art Academy is the Free Painting section which allows you to really get creative. You can either choose from one of about 50 stock photos included with the game or, if you have a DSI take pictures of your own, and then use all of Art Academy's tools to make a picture.Using the game is a surprisingly pleasing experience. You soon feel as if you are using a pencil or a paintbrush rather than a stylus. You learn how to mix colours too. This is an excellent use of the DS - I can't think why no-one has nailed it sooner than this. My only complaint is that I'd have liked a few more lessons - there are 10 main lessons and then some mini lessons to help you practice the skills in the main lessons, perhaps more stock photos, and a means of getting images off the DS (at least on the DSI with its removable memory card). However these are no more than niggles, and certainly not enough to detract from this product's five star rating from me!

I am a 40 something, gadget loving female who can't draw or paint but wish I could. My mum bought me this for Christmas... and I was sceptical... but it is brilliant. The 'game' is broken down into lessons that allow you to both develop your drawing and painting abilities while learning the tools of the software, to allow you to get the most from the product.Although you are not exactly using pencil and paper, or paint and canvas, the tools do give a very realistic feel of using conventional drawing materials. You can choose between different pencils & brushes and how much you load the paint & water on the brush, but this is all taught in a convenient way, step-by-step,so your confidence builds. My first drawing of a tree was passable, but I shocked myself with the level of detail on my sketched and shaded pear! I've just completed a perfectly painted apple, with tonal shading and highlights and my husband didn't beleive that I actually did it myself! The best thing is that it has made me want to try the same techniques and lessons with my real paints, so that can only be a good thing. This game certainly goes beyond teaching you just the theory (which you would expect from such a game) as you are learning how to actually "do" the practice too with realistic tools. As well as the formal lessons, there are mini lessons so you can repeat what you have just learnt and make sure you are confident in each stage before moving forward, plus when you have completed all the lessons you can use the DSi camera to take photos and then sketch and paint those too, using all the tools you have become familiar with.I heartedly recommend this game for budding young artists... and older ones too!

I purchased this as a present for my wife, thinking that it would be solely a fun distraction.... I'm pleased to say (as someone who attended life classes & drew/painted still life many years ago) that it DOES, in addition, deserve a little merit as an educational tool.Essentially you are given a picture of a subject (such as an apple) & you are given tools & palette to produce your own interpretation of that subject.Although life skills (such as viewing the subject from an exactly maintained distance & angle) are lost (as you are essentially drawing from a picture), the skills of composition, perspective and accentuating form via the use of light & shade are still taught (via the inbuilt program)& readily acquired. The colour palette is easy to use (probably TOO easy in comparison with traditional materials), and although it produces a pleasing pastel-like & often impressionistic finish, it really does produce a very "sameish" finish to each successive piece of work. The program has actually come as a bit of a revelation to my wife, who now understands how the observating/copying the effects of light & shade on an object can bring a drawing to life. This has in fact driven her on to trying drawing with pen & paper...It is worth having for the non-camera Nintendo console (as a large database of pictures to draw is included), although would be much better with the camera version as subjects/people/animals familiar to the user can be photographed & then drawn/painted.Having said that, there is nothing to stop you doing this from a traditional photo, for example.A great little distraction (and not too pricey)!

We offered the Xl to our 5 year old daughter this Christmas and we were hoping that the system would include a typical drawing application since it has the pen and a good enough resolution. Is doesn't! And we consider drawing an essential and natural activity. Our DSi brought installed the Hatena Notebook which is limited to 3 colours only and is supposed to provide tools for building animation sequences. It is hard for them to understand and the result is not very beautiful.Looking for a drawing and good application we came across with nintendo points and shop. The process is not the easiest but it works! Having the Nintendo console and games codes (that are transformed into stars and after that exchaged for points at the nintendo website),we were able to "buy" and download the "First semester" which is enough since it has a few interesting and basic lessons and the completely awsome FREE PLAY mode! The application is beautiful, very easy to use and understand, even for my daughter who is not yet reading and does not speak english yet (we are portuguese). The only obstacle she had so far was to realize that the brush had no ink and she had to raise the level of ink. She has done a lot of drawings which are saved into the DSi library and the small resolution does not interfere with the results since the app is very accurate. The sounds are ok and complement the activity.Adults and children are happy, interested in trying, competing for time with the console and ALL producing good and proud results. This application should be a part of the DSi console or at least a part of your life :-)Very happy.

I just got this game today and I have to say, it's by far the best I've had for my ds. I love the book collection, and Brain Training is fantastic, but if you want to see real results from practicing anything, this is the definiter winner. Looking at it, you might expect it to be for those with confidence in their drawing abilities, which I myself thought, but you'd be wrong. I'll be the first to admit that I have the drawing skills of a three-toed sloth, but after one afternoon on this game, I'm already drawing recognisable fruit, painting trees, learning shading, everything I've always been clueless at. The fantastic thing is that it doesn't just have you paint by numbers. It tells you what to do and how to do it, then leaves you to your own devices to do it as fast or slow as you can/want, then you simply move on to the next step when you're ready. There's no wrong or right ('You didn't fill in ALL of the gaps' is something heard far too often on computer games of this type, which had me wary), and you can save your pictures to a gallery to show people, or save your progress to carry on/ tweak later. Plus, you're not just using stamps and things that will never serve you, you learn techniques that are actually useful, and I can't wait to try with real art supplies! If you or anyone you know likes art or wants to learn but hasn't the slightest clue how to so much as draw a square without difficulty, this is the perfect 'game' to choose. You won't regret it.

I'd seen the advert for Art Academy for Nintendo DSi with Terry Wogan on the TV, and thought, "oh sure, it'd be THAT good" when they showed the painting he was supposed to have done. Anyway, I was intrigued, so I downloaded the demo onto my DSi XL through my Wii. I have to say that I was VERY pleasantly surprised at the programme's sophistication, and although my apple didn't end up looking exactly like the tutor's, I was very proud of the results of my attempts in the end. Actually, I made a hash of it first time round: it wasn't dreadful, but I wasn't satisfied, so I downloaded it again to give it another go, and that attempt was much better. Proved I could learn by repetition, at least! Now,this is NOT the same as painting with real materials, but the programmers have made a really good fist of simulating it, and the larger screen of the XL version of the DSi is perfect for this application. I am looking forward to completing some more lessons to see how I get on: it could even awaken an interest in painting for real!It is a pity, as other reviewers have said, that you can't export the images you create, but then Art Academy is a teaching programme, not a productivity one. The programme's sub-routines for mixing colours and applying them to a virtual canvas would translate very well to a programme actually producing works of art, though. Maybe a development for the future?

I got this game for Christmas - and I'm 13 :D I had previously thought that maybe I was too old for Nintendo Ds games, but when I opened this I found that it was perfect! I played on it non-stop for the next week :)The first time you play, there is a demo which guides you through all the features and how to draw etc etc. I really liked the way you could mix colours in the on-screen palette too! It is surprisingly addictive though; after completing one 'mission' you will find yourself unable to stop and immersed in the 2nd drawing challenge. Off the top of my head, I can remember a few of the step-by-step challenges; There is;~ An apple and it's shadow~ A field of trees~ A bowl of fruitThis is an excellent game for everyone!I am definitely not the best at art, but my pictures came out looking excellent (if I do say so myself, Lol!) so Art Academy will be fun for all ages and abilities!Another game that I got was Scribblenoughts - which is also BRILLIANT! Hope this will be helpful to you!

I have to say, this game (if you can call it a gmae?) is just brilliant! I have always had a burning desire to be able to draw and paint but have always given up as I simply can not draw ...... or so I thought....Your art teacher (Vincent) teaches you excellent simple techniques to draw and paint by taking you through numerous lessons, introducing you to new tools and techniques in each lesson. You are then given the opportunity to have a go at the mini lessons where you are left to your own devices a bit more so that you can implement what you have just learnt. The fact that new techniques are introduced to you gradually, really allows you to digest it all.Once you have finished a painting /drawing, you can save it to your own personal gallery and watch your masterpieces grow!!!I am really impressed with this game as I never thought I would be able to produce something that even slightly resembled what it was supposed to and fully deserves the 5 stars I have given it.

Love this game. Do lots of art but still find it fun and instructive. Useful to be able to take photos and finish painting later or photograph artwork to copy using the grid function. Great to take on holiday as well as normal sketchpad as you can paint without carrying materials around. BUT .... you cannot save or print your masterpieces and that makes it very frustrating. I have to photograph the screen, edit on Photoshop and print - and the resulting picture is very poor quality due to screen lines and reflection. With a Save to memory card feature this would have been a truly great game. The touchpad on the DS and double screen makes it superior to Brushes on an iPod/iPhone ,where you have to use your fingers, but with Brushes you can email your masterpieces instantly, thus save and print. The ultimate painting application, as used by David Hockney, must be Brushes on an iPad.

I never really knew how to draw, and when I was searching for a drawing guide, I found this Art Academy. I've read all the reviews, and was doubting a little bit how good it was, till I started to draw. All I can say is WOW!!! It was really amazing! And fun too. You get to learn all the basics of drawing and apply it. I couldn't believe I could draw like that, and minus the mess! They have many lessons to learn from, and along the way, you might feel your drawing doesn't look like the pic, but don't give up, when you finish, you will be amazed! It takes a little bit of patience. If you want to draw something else, you could always use the camera to capture and draw. There's a grid for you to draw the outline before coloring the pic. All the basics you need to draw are all in the game.I must say I'm really impressed with this. My family were in awe :p

I got my Nintendo primarily for the Brain Training games and though they are still fantastic, I honestly think Art Academy (and Art Academy 2) has surpassed them. Easy to use, step-by-step teaching which actually yields very, very good results. Main lessons, mini lessons to test your learning of the techniques and principles, plus free painting mode (and add-ons available to buy in AA2 on 3DS). Enjoyable AND relaxing, I recommend this for everybody from the age of 8 and up. You'll be amazed at how much you improve. I read the reviews which gave this 3 stars and under. You must have been looking at the wrong product. For ease-of-use and entertainment value (for anyone with an attention span and reasonable intelligence)this is second-to-none. It's also an educational tool that works. Buy it.

I bought this game for my 8 year old son, having seen visiting children, from age 6 and up, absolutely absorbed in it, getting huge pleasure from producing beautiful pictures. You start with short tutorials on different aspects of drawing - eg. shape, shading, light and dark, perspective. The level of complexity increases with each lesson, you start with an apple and build from there. Once the tutorials are completed there is a gallery of pictures to choose from. Each picture is approached in easy steps, building up to the finished piece. You can stop and try again, you can save the best results to your gallery. The finished pictures never fail to delight and amaze. The lessons learned on this game can be applied to "real" drawing and painting. Thoroughly enjoyed and recommended.

Art Academy was bought for my 13 year old daughter for Christmas as she really enjoys art and is quite a good artist. She has been really pleased with it, as she says that it helps show you how to draw and shade things step by step. She has created a lot of really good drawings including a wave which she is very pleased with as she says that she wouldn't have known how to draw moving water before. Although she was already quite good at art and it is helping her to improve, it would really help give ideas of where to start for those who struggle with their drawings. She says it is really good fun and enjoys completing drawings and unlocking new projects and that it has taught her loads.I would have to give this a real thumbs up.

I've always admired people who can paint and draw, especially because I am so bad at it. It's always something I would love to be able to do, so when I saw this advertised on tv it seemed so helpful and easy to follow, and I was right. I haven't completed all of the lessons yet but some of the drawings/paintings I've done so far have turned out fantastic (which came as a big shock I must admit). Even after the lessons are finished, you can just paint whatever subject, wherever and whenever you like.If you are interested in drawing/painting and would like to improve your skills then this is highly recommended,I've learnt so much already and I only started it a couple of days ago.Worth every penny and more!
