As you might expect from a printer, the box is quite large, and awkward, because of its weight. On opening the box you are presented with some paper leaflets, and an installation disc, held in the box flaps so they are very easy to see and get at. The installation sheets are parts 1 & 2 on separate sheets of paper. There are two other sheets of the same info in languages other than English. It would be easier to lift the printer out with two people, but can be done by yourself. The printer comes out complete with its protective polystyrene end packaging. There is another piece of polystyrene left in the box. Lift this out carefully as it contains the inks and they are not secured in place. You will also find the power cord and the two print heads here.As it comes out of the box the printer measures approximately 12” x 17” x 6”.There are pieces of orange tape in various places. These pieces of tape all need removing before you operate the printer. One of them requires lifting the lid, which has a support rather like a car bonnet. This one is attached to a large piece of orange plastic which also needs to be removed.Having got used to the minuscule amounts of ink that are supplied with printers these days (the manufacturers make their money from ink sales, not from printer sales) I was surprised at how large the five supplied bottles of ink were. The colour bottles (yellow, cyan, magenta) each contain 70ml. This compares with the 11ml contained in the XL colour cartridges I buy for my Pixma A3 Photo printer at around £13 each. There are also two identical black ink bottles each containing 135ml – only one is needed to fill the ink tank.Setting up is more difficult than the usual slotting in of a few ink cartridges. First of all two print heads need installing. They are conveniently labelled colour (C) and black (B) both on the heads and on the slots where they fit – don’t forget to click down the oval blue buttons with the springs underneath after installing the heads. Next you have to fill the ink tanks. The black one was ok, but I ended up with sore thumbs from the three colour bottles. The bottles are quite stiff and the instructions say to squeeze them – it’s just they need a lot of pressure to achieve a very slight squeeze. I ended up using a pumping action but it was hard work.I’m not happy with the power plug. The end that connects to the printer is a two-pin, either way up connector. I pushed it in until it stopped – it didn’t seem in very far – tapped it and it fell out. Repeated this several times with the same result and ended up pretty much having to force the plug onto the pins. I hate having to use force, it suggests poor design and penny pinching. So be mindful that the power connector is solidly seated in the printer before turning the power on.With power connected you press the on-switch, listen to some clunking noises for a bit and then press and hold the switch with the orange circle/triangle symbol. When the other lights do what they’re supposed to do you let go and make a cup of tea because it takes the printer 6 minutes to do whatever it needs to do next.Connecting to wifi was tedious and only succeeded after we got into troubleshooting mode. My previous Canon printer took moments.Installing included software (My Image Garden) triggered a computer restart without warning, so make sure you don’t have any unsaved work before you start the software installation/wi-fi connection.Lifting the slim top lid reveals the copier platen. Pressing the Color(sic) button copies in colour. Pressing the Black button makes a monochrome copy. Colour fidelity isn’t perfect but is quite acceptable on colour copies. My sample copy had a deep purple that translated to black, and a pale green that became a much paler green. But colours in photos reproduced very well. My black and white test showed that depth of black was not reproduced. The blacks in my copy were not quite as rich, but perfectly acceptable. The text was crisp and readable.I did a comparison photo print with my Canon Pixma ip8750 (which is actually cheaper than this G3501) using Canon Photo Plus Glossy II paper and the built-in colour profiles. Viewed on its own the print from the G3501 looked good. But in comparison with the same print produced by the ip8750 I realised that the G3501’s colours were very much paler and lacked the richness produced by the print from the photo printer. The downsides of the photo printer is that it’s a big A3 printer, doesn’t have a scanner built-in, and a full set of ink doesn’t give you much change from £100. In comparison, a black ink refill for the G3501 will set you back £12, and a single colour bottle around £10. You can buy all four bottles as a set and still get some change from £40, and you end up with about six times as much ink as well.Testing out the scan function, I changed the default destination for scans. Then scanned. ‘My Image Garden’ launched itself without being asked and then everything I had open hung up and remained hung until I forced a stop with Task Manager. Canon’s software reliability leaves much to be desired. My Image Garden launches when a scan is complete and then, on my PC using Windows 7, it just hangs up. I hope it works better on newer operating systems. The printer is good, software not so much. Scanning the photo I just printed, the resulting scan is soft and loses some definition. I tried changing the scan resolution to 1200dpi and it wouldn’t let me because the file size would be too big – this was for a 7” x 5” print. Conclusion:If I had nothing else to compare this with I would be totally happy with it, and my comparison is an A3 printer so they are not exactly interchangeable. The G3501 is a perfectly good desktop printer that will not only print documents, but also produce decent photo prints if you use quality photo papers. The copy function works well. Not so impressed with the scanning. I think my 12 year old HP Scanjet 4890 does a better job and that’s not brilliant.Still the G3501 is a fairly compact 3 in 1 unit and has a smaller footprint than my Scanjet, so in terms of desk real estate it is a winner. I think in terms of ink consumption it will probably be a winner too. I’ve never found page claims to translate to real use, but if Canon’s claims of 12,000 black pages and 7,000 colour work out to even half that, it’s probably more printing than I’ve ever done in my life and I doubt I’ll ever have to buy any refills for this printer – so on running costs, which is a big problem for inkjets, this printer wins hands down.I would have given five stars, but I’m not happy about the quality of the power connection, and the scanning software needs testing out on all the operating systems it claims to work on.

As a multi-function printer/scanner/etc. the Canon G3501 is perfectly capable machine. It lacks certain bells and whistles (no screen based interface), but as with most Canon printers (I own two others) its well built and reliable. In terms of physical footprint its not too big and would suit a small home office, although you do need to factor in that it has a rear paper feed that takes up extra space when is use. Setup is relatively straight forward, although the lack of a screen on the printer makes it slightly less easy to track progress than on other printers. Operating it once set-up, as with most modern peripherals, is very straight forward.Overall then, a decent unit but nothing remarkable. At least until you take into account the way the Canon G3501 handle printer ink.Dumping the traditional cartridge system, the Canon G3501 instead uses reservoirs that are filled from bottles of ink (black, cyan, magenta & yellow). The stated intention of this is to reduce both costs and waste by reducing ink usage and removing the need to buy complex and difficult to recycle cartridges. In practical terms, the reservoir system works well enough. They are reasonably easy to fill, with the ink bottles fitting snuggly into the top of each reservoir and using a valve system to prevent accidental spills. The opaque windows on the front show you clearly how much ink is left, so you can judge when a refill is required and avoid running out mid-print run. Print quality, for a printer using only four colours, is decent if not outstanding.Whether or not the bottle ink system will turn out to be cheaper than the cartridge one, only time will tell and will depend on how much ink the printer uses and how much the ink costs. I haven't used the Canon G3501 for long enough to make a judgement on usage. Checking on Amazon, a full set of refills from Canon would set you back between 50 & 60 quid (off brand replacements are far cheaper). By comparison, a full set of five cartridges for another PIXMA printer I own currently costs 43 quid, so there's not much to choose between them. What the G3501 should certainly do is cut down on waste, with only recyclable bottles to dispose of, so there is that definite benefit.

Canon G3501 High Capacity Multifunction Inkjet Printer - Black is a first-class printer/scanner which I have to say works like a dream. I love the quality of the printing especially the photographs, as well as the fact it does not eat up the ink as my last Canon printer did. The main bonus point for this printer is the fact the ink will last a lot longer plus the fact it is a lot cheaper to buy. The printer does cost a lot more than the more basic printer/scanner, but for me, the saving you do with the ink means it will pay for itself in a very short period of time.I love the quality of the printing of this printer and the ease of use.It was very easy to set up with a good source of instructions which was included within the box plus a CD which can be used to install though I downloaded the App needed through Play.com on my Android and Microsoft shop for my Windows Laptop.I would highly recommend the Canon G3501 High Capacity Multifunction Inkjet Printer - Black to anyone who likes to print a lot of pages or photographs as the printing is first class plus the fact it is economical when it comes to the ink makes it for me personally one of the best printers I have had the pleasure of owning.Happy to recommend.

The printer is difficult to set up as the instructions do not tell you how to connect the printer to your router. The printer works fine with applications for your PC. All types of prints are of good quality. There is no auto duplex printing. There is only one Paper Tray so the paper has to be changed according to the size of print required. Every time the Printer is switched on it carries out a Print Head Cleaning Cycle and after each print, I can't see the printer being as economical claimed.

The printer is easy to set up. There are no ink cartridges, but 4 refillable ink tanks! The colour ink bottles hold 70ml each, easily filling up the ink tanks. The black ink bottles, there are 2, each hold 135ml.Connecting to the internet hub was difficult from our iMac, but using a Macbook the printer found our network and linked immediately. The iMac could now also see the printer! There's no paper tray, it loads at the back of the printer. The print quality is very good in all respects.

Works well connected via USB. Easy to fill the ink reservoirs individually and see the ink levels. Print quality is good. Wireless setup is really complicated. Works on my android through app. Struggling with iPad set up. My laptop doesn't have CD drive so downloaded installation files, tried to install but boxes are too small to read and option buttons not properly visible. You can't zoom in on the dialogue box nor scroll to read the button options. Will contact helpline to complete setup.

The printer once set up is good, the process of getting it ready is fairly simple and once it is fully installed print quality (so far) and speed are good enough for my needs. To mirror what others have said, setting up the wireless option is to say the least frustrating, it can be done but a good deal of patience is needed. Do the wired set up first if you can, then go for the wireless option once it us all installed. You will need a printer cable to set up the wireless facility manually.

I've researched it beforehand and knew that the set-up will be bad. And so it was. I had to press buttons according to information provided in my Android app of the printer (browser manual was of no help).I managed to connect it to the wifi, and it's working pretty well now.I love the ink tanks, relatively easy to fill, and no barcodes to enter! So, any compatible ink will work.Print time is slow, and over wifi twice so, but for photos I don't care.Overall, got what I expected.

as printers Go it’s initially a quite expensive purchase as standard printers are subsidised with costly ink cartridges, this has none. It comes with 2 full black and 3 full colour ink bottles, which will print 12,000 black and 7,000 colour pages in total. The print quality is excellent as I use it mostly for photos so it has to be decent. Replacement ink is 95% cheaper than a new set of ink cartridges. So if you do a lot of high volume printing this is the best option to go for.

At last, a printer that brings the cost of printing down!Comes with a full set of printer inks so fill her up and off you go. Advise you follow the set up sequence as per instructions and you'll experience no problems. Load the Canon Print app onto your phone or tablet and print photos wirelessly within in seconds.Fantastic print quality in both documents and photos too with sharp crisp colours all at the fraction of the usual cost. What's not to like?

This printer is great once set up.Now it could be me being silly and just not understanding simple tasks but I struggled setting this up over the WiFi. No USB cable in the box and I didn't have any lying around so WiFi setup is all I could do. Took me a few hours of huffing and puffing but I got there. Thee ink set up is simple and I prefer this to the cartridges. The speed of printing is great and copying isn't an issue either.Overall I love this printer.

Bought to replace an ageing canon PIXMA 7550. I was disappointed that it lacked the separate trays of my previous model and that it was top loading, however I was pleasantly pleased with the volume of ink that came with the printer ( and the xtra black) print quality is ok ( but not up to the same standard as my 7550) but that had 6 inks) noise is acceptable,(just) I'm sure sacrifices were made to keep the price low but some things matter. "Just buy it"

31.10.2019

It takes a while to set up, it’s very important to follow the instructions and it won’t connect to the network until all the inks and other devices are inserted. Then it takes 6 minutes to configure itself, then it’s ready to connect to wifi. Did all this today. Print quality looks good, it’s much quicker and quieter than my Canon MG5650 which broke down earlier in the week. Paper feed seems much better than the older printer.

6.5.2019

The G3501 is of really good build and very functional once you master the set up,The ink system is brilliant saving time and money on your printing. The photo printing from tour android phone is particularly good using the canon print app.Copying, scanning too are great. Two small downsides no cable to connect to the pc and no double sided print.Overall this is a brilliant printer which will prove no doubt to be very economical.

3.4.2019

Setting up was easy, installed print heads and filled ink tanks no problem. Used CD to install software, and found that it would only print with USB cable (not supplied). After several calls to Canon, who were easy to contact, I eventually downloaded a driver which worked, don't know why. This problem has been outlined in other reviews I have since seen. The more expensive Epson Ecotank seems more reliable to set up.
