I bought a 2014 version of this printer, which looks exactly the same. (I guess this 2018 model has more memory.)I had hoped setup would be as easy as doing the WPS setup.WPS SETUP==========1. Press the WiFi button on the printer. [It's the one with the green light.]2. Select yes to "Setup Wi-Fi?" → confusingly, the DOWN button means "yes"!3. Wait for "Connecting WLAN" to appear on the (tiny one line) screen (on the printer).4. Then immediately press the WPS button on the router. [But only if you see the text "Connecting WLAN" on the printer.]5. Wait about two minutes.. don't touch anything.... and voilà ! (Almost)everything* is setup!Forget the reams of written instructions and the CD install disc! This is the quickest route to success — no need to faff around with a computer or USB cable!PASSWORD FOR FIRMWARE UPDATE========================* This model, unlike my 2014 model, has an additional step that wasn't there before! ????• The Brother iPhone app invited me to update the firmware, which I expected.• However, it required a password just do this ?!• I duly googled for the password and the only result that came up was "access", which must be a password that Brother previously used.• I couldn't see the password in all the included documentation.• I searched high and low, and the password is in fact → "initpass"• I found this after about 20 mins of searching — very annoying user experience, Brother!• Once i entered "initpass" into the tiny password box [I did a lot of panning and zooming on my iPhone screen] I was able to tap something to perform the firmware update.OPTIONAL=========• You can actually just start using the printer without updating the firmware. (In other words, you won't have the Brother password issue described in the previous section.)• But it's highly recommend to use up-to-date firmware as it is less likely to have bugs and other problems!MAC SETUP=========• If you've followed the previous steps, then the Brother printer is already available to all your Macs due to "AirPrint".• But, for peace of mind, you can press  (top left corner) and open up "System Preferences".• There, go to "Printers and Scanners", where it will say something like it's found your printer using "Bonjour".VIDEOS======Is what I'm saying above clear?I hope so!If not, I am in the process of making two short setup videos.I will put them on my YouTube channel. You can watch and follow along if you get stuck.(Check comments on this review for the links.)WHAT I HATE==========• The one line display on the printer, that only displays a few characters at a time, because it's so small.• The confusing and annoying user interface !!!• It now asks you for a BLEEPING password before you can update the firmware (as explained above). (As if someone is going to break into my house, guess my Wi-Fi password, and try to update the firmware!?!?)WHAT I LOVE==========• The printer is very small — perfect footprint.• You can print from any iPhone, iPad or Mac, that is on your WiFi network — no special software required (Thanks to Apple "AirPrint" technology.)• It's cheap to run.• The included toner cartridge is good for 700 pages.DELAYS======• If you're printing from Pages app, and what you're printing is just text, then it comes out immediately!• However, if you're printing a Safari webpage, for example, and it has a few little images... you will have to WAIT for a bit. [It says "Receiving Data" on the printer screen.]• And know this: images look terrible (but text looks fine).CONCLUSION===========This is a good printer, save for the annoying quirks, detailed above.

This printer is used for delivery labels, reference documents, scanning passports, visa applications, and more. The print is clear and precise, even on double-sided prints. The "scan and send to PC" function is excellent and simply implemented via clear button pushes on the front of the machine, resulting in an editable and printable file appearing on your computer screen in seconds. The machine uses buttons and not touch screens, which is a relief, as touch screens are imprecise and always lag or do funny things that you don't expect them to. Buttons simply go in and out - 'nuff said! The machine is fast and silent compared to my older inkjet, the HP Photosmart B209a,which had suffered a print-head failure outside of warranty that prompted this purchase. I do not miss having colour prints as I seldom required colour. If I ever have a specific need to print photos, I will take a USB drive to a supermarket or local stationery and print shop. The integrated wireless functions are very intuitive and useful. I set my printer's WiFi connection up by entering the router SSID and password directly into the machine, and the installed software then associated the computer to the printer over the same WiFi network that the computer is connected to. Be aware, the machine assumes this will be the primary method of connection and to that end, it does not come with a connecting USB cable. This would be needed if you were to lose connectivity and still needed to print a file out from your PC. Another boon of the printer that I haven't experienced yet is that anyone who has the Brother App on their phone can print straight to the printer over WiFi, instead of having to interrupt whatever task another person using the computer is doing. All-in-all, I am extremely impressed with this simple, fast, neat and business-like printer. I would urge you to consider spending a little more than you might want to on the printer itself, rather than saving on a cheaper inkjet that will cost you far more in the first year of use on ink cartridges (this is how printer manufacturers make the real money, not on the cheap inkjet printers themselves). I will not be going back to cheaper inkjets again. The EPSON ecotank would be the option I would go for if I was in the market for an inkjet. For my use-case, the Brother is hard to beat and I would highly recommend this printer for home office, small business and student use.

I use my printer as a network printer. I specifically bought a printer with a display, because that gives you some options to set it up using that display should various automatic functions fail to do what they are supposed to do. I don't print a lot, but have had a number of laser printers before this one from HP to Samsung. This is my first Brother.Came very well packed with a mains cable, software CD but surprisingly no USB cable. Drivers and manuals are extremely easy to find on the internet, if you even need them. There is a large startup flow diagram that is very easy to follow. There are a few transit tapes to remove but fewer than some other printers so that's easy. The cartridge is very easy to fit.I plugged the printer in to the network and turned it on. A little light flashed on the front panel to indicate a network was present and within a minute it appeared in the device list on all of my Windows 10 PC’s. I went in to a document and there it was in the print menu, bam, it worked first time. I can’t fault the process because there wasn’t a process. I didn't install anything it who knows where the drivers came from. Perhaps Windows 10 has them, perhaps it found them on the net, I don't know. It didn't say it was installing any. It just worked. There is a disc which I suppose you need if it doesn't just work like its supposed to.. or you want more than just drivers. I didn't install it. A big red PRINT button is enough for me. So, all in all, very high marks for installation. In fairness to other printers though at least Samsung are this easy too.As for print quality and speed, I can't fault either. The printer is a little quieter than many others I have tried. There is a rather pleasant woosh from it. It didn't seem faster or slower than any other ( although it probably is if you are actually measuring it with a stopwatch. which I wasn't.).I like the way that it defaults to double-sided printing. That's a really nice feature. It is of course very simple to switch that off, but you just have to remember to do it.Power consumption was very good. When it's printing it peaks at about 400W but when it goes to sleep it used so little that it didn't even register on my power meter. So less than 1W, which is very good indeed. No problems leaving this printer on 24/7.All in all it's a really nice product. Well worth the money.

When our Canon died recently I started doing a search of all the printers available. As it was just before Xmas I was hoping to pick up a bargain in the sales. I looked at Canons mainly but most reviews mentioned paper not being detected which was an issue we were always having. We've had Epson in the past and they just leak ink everywhere. I also looked at HP but didn't want to pay for their inks.I was then watching a YouTube video regarding a craft I am into and it mentioned using a laser printer, so I started looking at what they had to offer. I soon realised they were much more expensive and unless you want to pay out around £300, you will have to go with black and white, but reviews were better. So that led me to a search of laser printers and to this printer in particular. I decided that we rarely printed anything that had to be in colour and at £99 it was just in the affordable range. (The price went up the following day)The printer arrived a few days later in a huge box. Thankfully it was about a third packaging. The quick set up guide is mainly pictures, and not particularly clear pictures. Fortunately, I was able to figure out what was needed and where to put the drum and toner. Someone with very little tech knowledge may need assistance. A teenage relative would probably do, don't pay out for the proffessional installation. After having read the reviews I decided to skip the CD option and went straight to wireless set up which was relatively easy once I worked out which buttons to press. I did a few test prints and all is working well.Today I installed from the disc as this gives you extra features plus allows you to scan from your PC. Again fairly straightforward, and I didn't need to download drivers even though I am using Windows 10.The most confusing part was when it was searching for the printer. Rather than coming up with 'Brother' it actually had the Node Name of 'nameiphone8' - The name was my sister in-laws. It is an unusual name and she and my brother live 100 miles away from us, so no idea why that is. I have no idea what a Node Name is either! But in all, I give it 4 stars as all seems to be working well and it does what I want it to. I just took off one star for the not so straight forward instructions.

This is a lovely printer, which prints, scans and copies very well indeed. It was a struggle to set up, because the CD installation procedure got stuck at the point where the printer had to be linked to the WiFi, with the Next button greyed out; I had no difficulty in linking it to the WiFi via the printer's control panel (the CD procedure never asked me for the password, which may have caused its problem), but the installation procedure refused to continue beyond that point. I downloaded the latest version of the installation procedure from the Brother web site, but the same thing happened. I could scan and copy with the machine, but not print to it,because the driver would not load; I just got the message "Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver. Contact your administrator for help locating and installing a suitable driver." (I *am* my own administrator - it is a home machine, not an office one.) It was a Saturday, so of course Brother Support was closed until Monday morning. In the end I studied the files on the CD, located the file which contained the driver details (BRXM17A.INF in the directory xmlpaper), and then went through Windows Device Manager to install the driver using the Have Disc method. After that I had to remove the printer from my Control Panel and then add it again, and after that it worked.Because the installation procedure would not - er - proceed, I could not install the Utilities function which is further down its list of activities, but I downloaded a few of the utilities which looked handy from the Brother web site, although I do not have the function which acts as a contents page for them. All this took most of my afternoon, and probably took several days off my life, but hey - it only has to be done once! And I am still pleased enough with my printer to give it five stars, and to take the trouble to write all this out for the benefit of anyone else who encounters the same problem - because I am sure that many people would not have enough computer knowledge to plough through to the solution as I did.

I have owned two other laser printers prior to this. The first was given away because it only worked by connecting with a USB lead and it was inconvenient, and the second was returned because it had the flakiest wireless connection known to mankind. So I know what I'm looking for in a wireless laser printer. After inserting the cartridge/drum unit (supplied), getting it working was relatively easy. It didnt require me to connect any leads to the laptop, and was all done using WiFi. Once the connection was established I found that I could print from any computer in the house as it appeared as if by magic in the printer list. I could also print from my phone, again with no effort. This was IMPOSSIBLE with the previous printer.Another plus is that when printing two-sided documents I can use the cheapest paper we have (80gsm I think) whereas previously this would get chewed up on the second pass. Print quality is excellent. The toner cartridge supplied only lasts (only? It's still a lot) for 700 pages, and as my wife uses the printer quite a lot I got some third party toner at the same time. These go for about £15 each and last for 3000 pages. I put one in straight away, and it worked perfectly although i noticed that the first few pages were slightly lighter than normal. But it was no big deal. The scan and copy function is fantastic. I havent had a scanner for years, and the ability to place a document on to the glass and copy it with the press of one button has already proved to be of benefit. We're duplicating things right left and centre, just because we can and because it's so cheap. The 250 sheet paper tray works well, which once again is something I'm not used to. No misfeeds, no "incorrect tray in use" errors, nothing. And because there is a scanner on top, the paper instead comes out of a slot in the front and doesn't spill all over the floor even if you forget to pull out the little paper rest. All in all I couldn't want for a better printer for the money.

I took a lot of time doing research on printers and checked all the reviews on Amazon and found by far this had the better of you reviews for a laser printer the only reason why I'm giving it the 4stars. is because after using it, it wouldn't recognise any other toner cartridges and I tried several toner cartridges, but it kept coming up as low ink so I don't know if there's a software error, I brought three or four lots of toner to go in this printer and all of them wouldnt work. 2. this is not automatic double-sided printing. but it is in a sense it's automatic in the that it takes the page back inside and prints the reverse but it's not automatic as in you have to set it up manually to make it automatic.3.the interface there's only a tiny little window, it is very hard to see the menu. it is not that clear when you're actually setting it all up .4. overall it is a fast laser printer and does print good quality and it's good for the budget .5. I think the way that they put the power socket bit at the back of the machine rather than on the side of the machine and that makes it quite awkward if you want to put on a Shelf or in a cabinet or something like that and I find that quite awkward because I want to put it on the shelf so it meant they kind of the front of it protrudes because of the the plug where the socket protrudes from the back I think it would have been better if they've had that little the plug socket at the side of the machine and your day been a lot better other than that.6. I like the machine, very quiet printing very quick printing.7 quite complicated to set up as well in the respect of trying to set the menu up on the printer. just get a disc you put in your PC .8. don't print from the from the actual brother options , print from your computer options, because from brother it doesn't allow you to do double sided printing you have to go through your program like word or Excel whatever it is you're doing to actually print double-sided printing.

I have waited a good long time to leave a review so that any problems could crop up.Overall I am delighted with this MFD which offers automatic 2-sided printing and scanning, plus flat-bed option for scanning and copying. Automatic 2-sided scanning was a priority for me so that I could keep records electronically with a minimum of effort and time. I find that my scanned documents are often wonky, despite taking care to align paper correctly in the feeder, and activating the auto de-skew option. However, since the scans are for my own reference, this hasn't been a deal-breaker for me.Eco printing options meant that that the starter toner lasted me many months. Increasing the print quality gives excellent results. My one real gripe has been my device's failure to recognise a genuine Brother replacement toner cartridge. On the plus side, when I contacted Brother for support, the response was timely and gave me a practical solution- which was to ignore the error messages. It is annoying that I receive notification that I am out of ink every time I print and there is no fix for this. It also means that I won't be alerted when my toner genuinely is getting low.I found the various software that accompanied the printer confusing. There were multiple ways to manage printing, scanning and copying and no obvious way to see which would be most appropriate. It took me several months to figure out the best way for me and how to maintain my chosen default settings. I have had occasional difficulties with printing from my phone or tablet, but this generally works well.I have not found the online instructions very user friendly. However, the great support response from Brother compensates for this. After a little over 12 months, I am satisfied with my purchase. At the time of purchase, this was the only device on the market that met all my requirements without breaking the bank. It isn't perfect, but it has helped with my productivity and I wouldn't be without it.

This is a great all in one printer for home use for anyone who doesn't need colour prints. I can highly recommend it.It's very easy to install, has an intuitive user interface and is very good value.I did quite a bit of research prior to buying this; owing to some poor experiences with previous printers such as high running costs and reliabilty problems. From what I have read, Brother seems to be one of the most, if not the most, reliable consumer printer brands on the market. They have a relatively low rate of faults compared to other brands such as Epson etc according to numerous sites such as which.co.uk.In addition, the Brother DCP-L2530DW is one of the most economical printers at this price point. The printing works out at just 2p per page if you order the high yield toner. This is substantially less than most, if not all, inkjet printers. The reason for this is that inkjet printers use ink even when the printer isn't in use to clean the ink jets. You don't have this problem with laser printers so you have less wastage and this makes it ideal for many households. In terms of print quality, it is good, if not amazing. For home use, the print quality is more than sufficient - university essays, journal articles, boarding passes and letters etc all look good. The print speeds are excellent. The scan and photocopy functions are very easy to use and work well. Once you have used the printer installation disk on your computer, the Brother DCP-L2530DW will automatically send all scans to a local folder on your computer. which is extremely convenient The scan quality is okay but not amazing, definitely servicable though. Finally, the build quality is good. It's a reasonably big machine but looks well built and sturdy. I'd recommend this printer for any home. For an office scenario, you may want something with a slightly higher print qaulity for things such as company documents or letters. But, this is still pretty good. Thumbs up from me.

I already had a compact Brother laser printer, that I bought about two years ago from a different retailer. This has a scanner added on — so I expected it to be a bit bigger. Turns out it's A LOT bigger. The scanner itself is SLOW.This machine is ideal for a small home office. It has a very large paper tray.SETTING UP==========• This seemed extremely confusing.• Acres of paperwork / instructions and an installation CD, which is cute (I don't have any computer with a CD drive anymore) (yeah I know I can download the drivers from the Brother website.)• In the end, I just guessed that WPS setup would work: I pressed the green WiFi button on the printer, then the WPS button on my router.• I'm so glad that did the trick!• To clarify,I'm running macOS High Sierra (10.13.4) and I did NOT need to download any drivers once I had completed the WPS button step. [I assume that it happened in the background without me knowing — I didn't have to do it manually.]iPhone App========• I got the Brother app from the AppStore. I had hoped it would allow me to setup, but it was really only useful, for me, after setup was complete.• The app ran me through a firmware update [video coming]• I was able to scan, using the iPhone app. I could then save the image to my iPhone's camera roll.AirPrint======• Once WPS setup was complete, the printer was visible to my iPads and iPhones.• You DON'T actually need to install the Brother app on your iPhone in order to "AirPrint" (it's what Apple calls their wireless printing technology).. but it's still useful to have it.• It's really handy as guests to your home (or office) can easily print from their iPhones... all they need to do is connect to your WiFi.. no other setup required.UNBOXING VIDEO============For those curious about what's inside the box:? youtu.be/-RiJatqgjugBROTHER APP VIDEO============When this is ready I'll also put it on my YouTube channel.?

Choosing a laser printer for small office or startup isn't as simple as you would imagine. The gulf in price between an inkjet and a laser is only made more complicated when you factor in the cost differences between the two styles of ink replacement. There is then the size and power... None the less, this offering from Brother is a confident little performer that deserves your attention. But let's get the negatives out of the way; whilst it is a relatively inexpensive for a laser printer, the product is not without questionable design choices. For example, it's surprising that there is no alternative to the wired connection, given that it this were to be used in an office,it wouldn't always be convenient to take a laptop over and plug it in just to print something. What's more, the reliance on USB 2.0 doesn't take into account the increasing number of devices with Type C ports. Finally, my product didn't arrive with the said USB cable. I'm pretty sure this was intended, but feels a little cheap in all honesty. What are you getting however is excellent value. The device is stealthily compact, which allows it to be placed in a greater number of hot spots compared to an all-singing-all-dancing product. The noise levels during operation are unassuming and more pleasant on the ear than a clunky inkjet printer. The quality of print is absolutely fine, and the ability to print double-sided is a rare luxury that you actually want to take home from work.Set-up was straightforward on both a PC and a Mac; the latter being less finicky about when the device was or was not idle.Of course, the deal-breaker is that it is a mono-only printer. What impact this has on you depends entirely on your output; for text documents it's a dream machine, but those looking to print vibrant spreadsheets and artwork will want to look elsewhere. For the mono users, this is an excellent product that offers great value.

Until now we’ve had an all-in-one printer scanner copier, but in fact all we really ever print are package return labels or package labels for items we are posting or email and work related documents, so this was bought to facilitate quick and easy printing of stuff like that, I mean who really prints photos at home these days anyway? The unit has a bigger footprint than other monochrome printers I had been looking at but I decided that being able to load a tray of appear rather than having to add as needed was a good trade off for us.Setup involved clicking the cartridge in ace, adding appear to the tray, plugging in and connecting to WiFi. All very easy and quick with good but brief instruction.I’d say I printed my first page within 5 minutes of opening the box!One factor choosing a monochrome laserjet printer was cost of prints. This comes with a ‘starter’ print cartridge, however it says will print about 700 pages, so initially this may take us a while to use up so Inrefrained from adding an additional cartridge to my basket. Replacement cartridges are quite expensive but when I looked at the cost of the 5 colours needs for my old printer and the fact that sometimes it was weeks between prints so the ink dried up, this printer won’t suffer that issue and in fact will be way more cost effective over time.I love the fact that it’s wifi connected to my home network and we can very quickly and easily connect and print from out phones, laptops and tablets with no problem at all. Eprint, Apple air print and other wireless printing tools are all catered for.Print quality so far is excellent. We haven’t printed any complicated images or tried to print photos in black and white yet although that was not what we purchased this printer for.Overall, this is a solid product that is a really good price if you are needing a small printer with effortless black and white printing.

I'll never go back to inkjet! Wanted a laser printer a few years ago when buying my last one but the only model I could afford at the time was out of stock everywhere and the need for a printer for uni was pressing so I settled on an Epson inkjet instead and regretted it for 6 years afterwards! Wasn't a terrible printer, just got really fed up with changing the ink cartridges so frequently and how SLOW it was printing anything more than a couple of pages at a time. This time around I had a little more money and a lot less pressure to make an immediate purchase so I listened to my gut and went for a laser printer. This model seemed to have everything I wanted (duplex printing, scanning, wireless)without too much that I didn't have a lot of need for (no colour printing or touchscreen) pushing the price up higher than I was willing to pay. Long story short, I'm absolutely thrilled with the performance of this thing so far, been using it since the beginning of August and haven't had a single problem yet. Was really easy to get up and running and the wireless connectivity is great, absolutely rock solid. And the relative speed compared to an inkjet, what a treat! I cannot tell you how pleasing it is to hit the print button on a four page document and it's already done and sat waiting for me by the time I've gotten up from my desk and walked into the next room to get it out of the tray! If you're in the market for a mono laser printer that can handle more than just printing but won't break the bank, this will not disappoint you.

I chose carefully to get this brother, wanting something to replace all the hassle of Inkjets, but also wanting something that fits into a home, now that a lot of us are working from home. This printer is compact, and unlike many printers which need extra space for the paper trays this one doesn't. Paper is underneath and comes onto the top. You can put this printer on a small shelf, under the bed, on top of the wardrobe - as long you as you can connect power to it you can use it. Be aware, however, you will NEED a USB lead (with small 1cm square connector on one end) to set this printer up. Set up is a bit of a pain, made harder for me because this one was supplied with only a 2-pin Euro lead and instructions only in Spanish,Portuguese and Italian. A CD disk comes with the printer, but it is easy enough to download from internet. Installation takes time - you'll need an hour, maybe more and it is tiresome to do. Your computer will not recognise this printer without a USB connection (and that applies to EACH device). However, if you have good WiFi, once the software has been installed it will run through Wireless connections and afterwards you can unpin the USB cable and move the printer out of the way. In the end I got my Brother to work with my PC, two laptops and my smartphone and none of these need to be in the same room as the printer. Print quality is good, and it automatically turns paper over for double-sided (duplex). It is a pricey product, but you are getting a better printer than the cheaper products

When my last printer packed up a few ears ago I bought a Canon inkjet MP250 through Amazon deals, I knew the catch would be the price of ink but since I don't do much printing I didn't think it would be a problem..... but that was a mistake, I'm getting through 3 sets of ink cartridges a year which even on Amazon is about £25 a set.…..Considered a laser but found colour ones are expensive, since I mainly print text I decided to look at b/w lasers. Brother seemed to keep cropping up in reviews when reliability was mentioned so....First Impressions was that it was solidly built, set up was easy - win 10 already had the correct driver - and if you follow the quick set up guide takes only a few minutes.I used USB so as usual you need to provide a USB cable. Now to printing, the first thing I noticed was the speed of printing compared with the inkjet, the pages came out immediately one after the other. Print quality was excellent, letters appeared to be sharper and jet black making them very easy to read. Can't comment on durability yet hence only 3 stars, but it does seem solidly built. The only slight problem is as mentioned by others is curling of the paper when printing both sides, however it doesn'tkink the paper leaving a mark so it can be left to flatten. Only other problem is the usual lack of a USB cable. It is only a printer, but since the Canon is multi-functional, print, copy and scan that's not a problem. The main advantage is that printing is now affordable.
