I wanted a simple printer for home, but found far too much choice. And for every printer the had 100+ "5 or 4 star" reviews, it would also have 10s of "1 or 2 star" reviews as well. What became clear me, and helped me select this printer (and might help you) was the following:1. "Laser" is far better quality (used on office printers) and far less susceptible to "ink problems" than "Ink jet";2. Many "good value printers are a con as they either come with a cartridge that gives you 10 prints, or ties you in to cartridge replacement contracts, or automated replacement. I want be in control and know when my cartridge is. really empty!3. I only want to print letters & forms, and not photos,so colour printing is not important, and helps reduce complexity and ink costs;4. I wanted wireless to use with my MAC, but use with mobile devices was not a priority;5. I want good quality prints/copies/scans, and to be able to scan colour sources;6. I will only be printing a few pages a week, and so "cost per print" is not so important, and looking at the divers ways in which manufacturers quote & calculate this, I don't trust the figures anyway; This printer seemed to satisfy all my above needs, so I went ahead and ordered one from "the warehouse" at a further £10 saving. It arrived 2 days later, and within less than 30 minutes, I had it fully installed and working, having checked all functions. It looks to be ideal and I hope it stands the test of time and my intolerance of poor products. It is very easy to set up and you don't need any cables; for MACs it uses Bonjour to do ad-hoc networking and get your router settings automatically. Why not a "5 star" review? ... well (and I know it is a budget product) it is a bit "plasticky and flimsy" and made me a bit nervous pulling the various bits out to install the cartridge, etc. "clicks" that sound like something has snapped were common, but seemed normal. This is a minor point since I shouldn't have to pull it apart that often! The one niggling thing is the small LCD, and the fact it doesn't seem have any backlighting, so is very difficult to read. May be I missed a setting somewhere, but given the cheapness of larger dot matrix displays, for example, this is an are that could be improved.Over all though, this is a very compact and neat printer for the home office, with easy set-up and easy-to-use features and not loads of complicated options/selections. It just does the jobs I want it to :-)

I used the quick-start guide and included software disc to set up this printer and found it reasonably straightforward. It wasn’t included in the box but I also used a USB printer cable because it helps to speed the installation process and also makes it easy to set up the Wi-Fi. I’ve been using it with a couple of laptops running on Windows 10 as well as an assortment of tablets and phones. It’s necessary to install the Brother app on mobile devices and although it is usable the app is not very good. However, it does mean that I can print from them which I’m pleased about.I like that this particular printer package comes complete with five toner cartridges so there’s no need to worry about sourcing replacements for a long time.An advantage with laser printing (when compared with traditional inkjets) is that they don’t dry out over time so they make perfect sense for those people who only need to print now and again, as well as being much cheaper to operate. Duplex (automatic double-side) printing might have been a nice feature on the printer but I can cope without it.It is good that this is quite a compact machine, even with the scanner at the top. However, in common with many other printers you need to have the paper tray sticking out of the front of the printer if you want to leave it set up and ready for action. In my case that’s not an issue but it does mean you need to allow a little extra space on your desk for it. It’s worth noting that although this is a mono (black & white) printer the built-in scanner can still scan in colour so you’re able to keep proper, useful copies of colour documents and photographs. The scanning quality isn’t as good as a standalone model that I also use but is fine for simple scanning jobs where I don’t mind if the quality isn’t top-notchThe printer itself is great for lots of text – I find that the print quality of text pages is very good, with clear, defined lines. Images are less sharp than I’d have liked but are perfectly acceptable. Printing speeds are fine for domestic use but probably too slow if you regularly print out in high volumes. I think that this all-in-one would be best suited for those looking to buy a decent compact mono printer which also has some basic scanning and copying facilities.

The 'Brother DCP-1610W A4 Mono Laser Printer, All in Box Bundle, Wireless and PC Connected, Print, Copy and Scan, Up to 3 Years' Worth of Printing' is a great value black and white laser printer/scanner/copier bundle. It comes in a rather dauntingly large box, but the printer itself isn't enormous, the box is oversized because there is a box containing four additional toner cartridges inside it (giving an impressive total of five toners). We were unable to connect the printer wirelessly as it can only connect to a domestic wi-fi router, whereas we have a network, but this is not an issue as it connects readily to a PC with a standard USB cable. We had no issues setting it up,and it was all done and printing within a few minutes. The print quality is excellent, and it prints sheets quickly (although it is a little on the noisy side). We haven't tested the 'scan' function as we haven't needed it yet, but it copies extremely well, and I was pleased to note that the hinge on the lid is slightly loose so that it can accommodate thicker items without having to scan with the lid sticking up.The only problem we have experienced in the few weeks we've been using it was one paper jam, which was easily remedied by opening the front of the printer, removing the toner cartridge assembly, and simply pulling the paper through. I think it must have been a crinkly piece of paper, as we have printed many sheets since without the problem recurring.Very impressed with this, ideal for black and white printing (it does scan images to your computer in colour, but obviously cannot reproduce things in colour itself). Brilliant value and great machine.

Does the job, I think. I was replacing a Samsung laser printer that unexpectedly died and became lifeless after 6 years service, it just wouldn't power up. When I got the Samsung I noticed the print quality was a big step up from the inkjet it replaced. My first impression of the Brother is that it isn't quite so good in this respect. Shaking the toner cartridge and moving the runner from right to left, reinstalling it, then printing off several sheets of paper improves matters but print still isn't quite as sharp around the edges as the Samsung, but still acceptable. However, with the additional scan and copy functions, it represents good value for money.I am running the printer on Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The provided software doesn't include drivers for this OS as it is so old, apparently, but I was able to download a driver off the internet that works. However, it will only work the printing function, not scanning. To work around this I'm using the Brother app for iOS devices on my iPhone. You can press the WPS button on your router to pair the Brother directly to your WiFi network, and this means you can operate the scan function with an iOS device and email the files to yourself.I found the printer driver by googling "brother dcp 1610w driver mac 10.6.8". I had to download 2 or 3 drivers before finding one that worked. The one that works was the 5th result to be listed, at drivers download dot net.

Very good value. Produces good crisp prints. I wish it had a direct photocopy feature rather than having to scan documents and then print them. It is very quick to do this however. The function display cannot be seen without a torch and it is very small but to be fair most functions are selected by using the PC or laptop controls The lack of a tray to capture copies is inconvenient and you have to stand over the printer to prevent them from spooling onto the floor. There is no on/off indicator light so unless it is switched off at the mains plug you never know if it is on or off. It does not seem to use power when it is off.I previously owned colour inkjet printers which always gave me trouble. This little printer is a dream by comparison and is ideal for moderate use. Original and compatible toner cartridges are easily available and the printer itself is very easy to set up.There are some good YouTube videos which can help. Note that the cartridge should be shaken gently before inserting it into the drum and the green slider on the cartridge should be moved from the right to the left because this mixes the toner inside the cartridge. I have set mine to use the printer cable only as the printer is close to my PC but I may use the wireless set up later on. This is a monotone printer and I do not miss the inconvenience and cost of an inkjet printer.

Being a student, I need to do a fair amount of printing. As colour wasn't a concern (as I can do that at uni if need be), I went with this budget-priced little laser printer, hoping to save money on ink. No worries there - I've gone through an entire semester and not even had to open the spare toner cartridge yet - it's still using the one it came with. I bought some decent quality paper for it and the quality is pin-sharp. It's also extremely quick - used to inkjets, the first time I used it I was not prepared for the snowstorm of paper my plucky little printer ejected in short order, and as I hadn't extended the paper tray (I thought I'd have time before the first page came out) it flew everywhere.I learned my lesson there! It installed on my Windows 10 laptop with no effort and has never jammed or let me down. If there is a jam though, it would be very easy to open her up and take the offending paper out. It's not fancy, if you want double-sided printing you have to turn the paper around yourself and of course it's black and white only - but if that's all you need, then this printer is perfect for the job.

Cheap laser printer, that works ok.Installation -> manufacturer recommends to use USB cable to add the printer to your Wifi network, but printer USB cable is not provided! If your router supports WPS (sometimes it is not there due to security risk) then you can connect the printer that way. Otherwise, save the time and buy additionally a printer USB cable...Quick installation guides only in Latinos languages...Installation is not the easiest as you can see. That said when the drivers were installed and printer finally connected to Wifi its joy to use it.Click print, choose your printer, confirm and there it is -> your printout is soon ready.Decent quality, enough for text, courier labels etc.Photos are better than I've expected, but this is not a printer for photos. Is more like to have medium quality images, photos, diagrams in your documents than printing photos/images that you can put on a wall in a frame :)Note - no ethernet port if you like use cable instead of Wifi, something to consider if you plan to spend a lot of time near the printer which would be turned on (Wifi connected - RF radiation).

There's nothing exciting about this printer -- it just works. It has sat in my home office for 9 months, has printed 170 pages, and I've never had any problems or frustrations with it whatsoever. Thinking about it, being able to say that about any printer is actually quite exciting.I don't remember the setup process well, but it's sat happily on my wifi network since I bought it. I can print from various Apple Macs without having to download an installer, and from Windows without much trouble. There is also an Android app which is fairly basic, but works.Print quality is fine, speed is good. The toner cartridge that came with the printer (which is smaller than the ones you buy) is still in it,and has 80% of the toner left after having printed 170 pages. The drum unit has 99% of it's life left. In that time I've had one paper jam, which I think was to do with the paper being a bit crumpled in the tray.If you want a B&W printer for not much money, which won't annoy the hell out of you, and you're not planning on doing much printing, then I'd recommend you buy this one.

For years we have messed around with slow annoying inkjets that dry up if you don't use them for a period of time and require new cartridges because even head cleaning can't fix them.I almost put my fist through the last one as I had to sit through the cartridges moving back and forth for a minute for no apparent reason as they do when you hold the button in to change them.So do yourself a favour, get your holiday snaps printed in a shop with ink that doesn't fade in six months and buy this laser for printing letters, reservations, insurance certificates etc.It was easy to set up, prints in a fraction of a second that an inkjet takes, is better quality by a large margin and doesn't have to be used every week to prevent it clogging up.The toner will also last forever for the average home user.I'd have saved myself a lot of frustration if I'd bought this printer years ago.I bought an identical looking Brother fax for the office at work which is also laser and that is doing great. No issues at all. High confidence in the product, highly recommended.

I purchased a used version since I'm only occasionally using it and it worked great. Being used all the packaging had been opened and the ink cartridge was installed. It came with a UK plug. The printer has wireless but I used a USB cable, which wasn't included. The printer uses a square Type B USB connector. A CDROM driver disk was included but I downloaded the drivers from the Brother web site. They were 2014 versions which worked fine. It uses A4 sized paper as standard but it includes a plastic adapter for A5 paper which I will certainly lose. I plugged it in. I powered it up. Downloaded & installed the printer driver. Added paper to the bottom tray. Then in Windows 10 64-bit,printed a delivery note from ebay, selected the printer in print settings, and it quickly printed a nice and clean copy of the label with bar code and insert. It's a laser printer and so the print quality and speed are better than similar priced ink jets, and I expect the ink cartridge will provide more copies as well. For the price and for domestic use I can't fault it.

Neat and tidy, saving a lot of desk-space as it's replacing both an old Laser and an Ink-jet multi-function machine. Reasonably quick, good print quality. Only 3 weeks in use so far, but meets all my modest needs. Experience will show how toner consumption works out.A few downsides.1. Installation took a while - whatever happened to play and play? I gave up on wireless as it's close enough to the Mac to just use the USB connection and a 2 m cable [max allowed]..2. Not a fan of exposed paper trays, allowing dust to gather on the top sheet. I guess I could close the tray and only load paper when needed.3. Paper output just about works. It took me a few days to discover the fold-out paper-catching flap!!4.Perhaps the strongest negative is the "deep sleep", which requires me to actually press the On/Off button before the first use of the day. I guess it could be done on-screen via the Brother Control Center ... I'll have to play with that a bit.

A bit lightweight and flimsy construction but for the price what do you expect?Main thing is does what it says on the box with no frills. No auto duplex printing, no way to print an odd sheet of a different size or an odd envelope (you have to replace what's already in the paper tray.)A bit noisyScans seem good quality with well saturated colours and high enough resolution for most purposes. Save to PC as standard JPG colour files or print out direct in MONO (Although it scans in colour It's only a black and white printer remember)Seems bigger than necessary. The paper tray protrudes at the front yet there is a 20cm deep gap at the back which seems to serve no purpose.WiFi setup is painless if you use a USB cable as recommended.Once set up you no longer need the USB cable so if you haven't got one you could borrow one perhaps just to set it up..It says WiFi setup is possible without USB cable but I didn't try it.

Works with Linux Mint / Ubuntu but you need to download the Linux DEB driver installer from the Brother website. Unfortunately the installation instructions on the Brother site are outdated for Linux Mint 18 and Ubuntu 16. However, the instructions on this site worked fine: (website link blocked by Amazon *)It takes around ten minutes to install the scanner and printer drivers, copy/pasting around 8 commands into terminal from the site linked above. The Brother printer and scanner now works fine. Very pleased with it. Only dropped one star due to Brother not keeping the Linux installation file and documentation up to date, necessitating following the instructions on a third party website.* I had to remove the link as Amazon wouldn't post my review with a link in it. So you are on your own. Thanks for nothing Amazon! Good luck to anyone else buying this printer, hope you can find the instructions on how to install it!

For a basic printer that does black single sided text which is all I wanted it for, it is excellent. I expected it to be quite slow, but it's more than quick enough. My only problem is that i put in thicker paper (80gsm) and its rollers were a bit firm and left roller lines in two tracks down it. after putting a few sheets together they disappeared. The quality of the printed text is excellent. Not used it for pictures or anything so can't comment. Its compact when all folded away, but you have to keep your paper elsewhere as there is nowhere to put it in the printer when the front tray is folded up. Perfect for me as I wanted it to not take up space on a desk until I wanted it. You get drivers, but I just plugged it into the USB and it worked straight off plug and play on a Mac air 2011. Replacement cartridges are not expensive, I hope it will do the reported 1000 pages at least.

This is a nice enough printer for the price, but certainly nothing exceptional. It does the job a cheap printer needs to do - print with not much fuss and be cheap to keep supplied. It does all that. It's very small and light, even compared to my small ex Samsung available at not much more; but overall it just feels a little too much on the flimsy side to be totally comfortable with it. You have to remove the drum to add the toner cartridge, which is a minor mission, but I suppose it's not something most would do too often. Print quality is fine, maybe a tad thin but certainly sharp and readable. Installing the driver and such was easy and everything worked. The main reason I bought this cheap printer rather than another Samsung was the cost of toner replacements. From third party suppliers they are especially cheap.
