This was the least expensive sewing machine, but there is nothing cheap about it.It works superbly and has a full range of accessories in the storage area in the table.I used it to sew multiple ply denim. No problem.I used it to sew some waterproof material) also tough and again no problem and these are very difficult materials to sew.I could not find the X5 on the Brother website but it appears to be a much more expensive model with some of the fancy stitches omitted. In fact the range of stitches on this machine is superb. Normal, sig-zag and so on.I have not tried making a buttonhole or sewing a button using the attachments, nor have I tried the double needle, but if they are anything like the rest of the machine they will be great. The instruction book is excellent. The DVD is not about how to use the machine but a Brother promo, but who cares - you don't need it.Very very easy to wind a bobbin and fit it. Very easy to thread (you have to thread the needle)There is a great amateur demon on U-tube that shows how easy it is to use.A great robust machine at an incredibly low price. In case you have not noticed, I am a guy. I wanted it to make some carry bags. If I can use it and get good results, anyone can.

For general purpose sewing and for beginners this is a good sewing machine. It also seems to be the lowest price (online) to buy new so it's good value for money too.A couple of things to note: the cover for the accessories storage is very difficult to remove. It could just be because it's new. It's annoying though as you can't really get sewing unless you can open it and get at the bobbin to load and use.On another sewing machine I had seen it was possible to select machine speed. The only way to do this on this machine is to press more lightly on the pedal. I thought it would be a problem as I'm a beginner but you soon get used to it.I have so far just sewn with woven cotton.I want to try jersey/knitted i.e. stretchy fabric. There does seem to be a way to do this with this sewing machine (there is a suggested method in the manual) but I haven't tried it yet.

I think the machine is really good value for money. It has 14 stitches and all the expected functions. I was also impressed by how quiet it is when it's running. The only reason I haven't rated it as excellent is the instructions. I read other reviews about the instructions before I bought it, so I was prepared for them to be difficult. They are quite confusing and seem almost backward in places, and half the written instructions & diagrams don't match up.Be prepared to spend a little time fiddling about and trying different things to get it set up, if you are not experienced using sewing machines (like me). I think more experienced sew-ers would have less trouble getting things set up.

I got this sewing machine for my birthday - it's my first ever and I love it! It's a lovely design, easy to use, and the instructions booklet is very thorough and covers every topic I've needed to look up (as a newbie to sewing machines). So far I've made a few plushies, and I'm so happy with the results! This sewing machine gets your work looking top notch without much effort. It also included a lot of add-ons and accessories to play with in future! The only thing I could complain about is that it doesn't come with sewing machine oil, which is necessary to use before you start sewing - but the stuff is generally cheap and easy to find anyways!

My husband bought me this machine for my birthday, didn't want to spend too much as we didn't know if I'd take to sewing - I've never really sewn except for making a simple apron at school 30 years ago. I set it up in 5 minutes, visual pictures in the instructions really helped and there's a DVD too if needed. I managed to make a few projects in one afternoon - really easy to use, I'm looking forward to making something more complicated now! If I had to find any bad points, it's slightly noisier than I expected, but not so much so that it worries me and there isn't a cover with it so it lives in the box until I want it.

This machine is fantastic at sewing and embroidery 5* I've owned this model for about 6 years, it's the most amazing machine, yes it's compact, but that's never stopped it sewing the most amazing things to the highest standards. I've made everything from clothes to curtains, bags to pants, whatever I put under the presser foot, just sews (within reason guys!). Never skips a stitch, really quick to change threads. It tells you when your bobbin thread is about to run out, it does this on embroidery and sewing, I've 10 machines, this is my go to machine. I'll never get rid of it.

I purchased this Brother sewing machine for my 10 year old Grandaughter's birthday. We had a lovely afternoon making a patchwork quilt cushion cover. With a little guidance from me she managed it very well indeed. After one demo she had learned how to thread the machine. A great afternoon with good results. I look forward to our next session of sewing.Well done Brother (who I used to work for many moons ago) for providing a simple machine for beginners. It would be nice to have a proper cover for the machine though as it is only in a cardboard box.

This is an excellent beginners machine with 14 stitches including 3 step buttonhole. Very easily threaded with drop in bobbin. Good stitch quality and sturdy enough. Watch out though you will need to use the smaller top spools as it will not take large spools, however, I do think that there is an attachment you can purchase separately to take larger spools. A basic machine but will definitely do the routine sewing jobs around the house, such as, hemming trousers and skirts as well as hem curtains. Great value for the money and a real workhorse.

I only wanted a basic machine as I am a beginner. Originally purchased a beldray from Argos & after a couple of uses it was useless. This brother machine was on offer so exchanged and upgraded. Wish I had got this from the beginning. So easy to use, stitch choices are fab and can even embroider names etc, pedal is excellent size and heavy duty enough for frequent use. Has a metal bobbin cage making sure bottom thread is fed through with no problems. Light too. All I can say is all round fab machine. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

I found the instruction booklet easy to follow right through from how to thread the machine and bobbin down to how to use the different feet etc and carry out the various stitches etc. The machine itself is easy to use and light to carry. There is a selection of feet that are easy to change too, in order to carry out different tasks.I'm a beginner at this and have found it so easy to use I keep looking for things to sew just so I can use it.Would recommend it for both the beginner and experienced machinist. Well worth the price.

I'm a complete sewing novice, never touched a sewing machine before, I chose this machine because of the good reviews and it defo doesnt disappoint.. the instructions are easy to follow , I had it all set up and 2 new cushion covers knocked up in no time....great buy!! :-)the only thing I would say if u r completely new to using a sewing machine is, take care when removing the lower bobbin case, I opened the little black levers and the whole inside came out, u only need to pull the little lever on the bobbin case itself...:-)

I reserved this sewing machine for mum to collect. She is coming up to 84 and has for some time been frustrated because she couldn't pick up her old machine. This new machine is light and very easy to use. I call her daily - I live 250 miles away - and she is constantly altering her tops and skirts. She said yesterday ' I love this machine'. She has already got her money back as she has saved £s not paying for someone else to alter her clothes! It also keeps her occupied! I too have a Brother sewing machine.

This sewing machine is slower than my old one and was hard to thread, due to lack of instructions Once I got it going it’s amazing, great features on stitches and so easy to go from one feature to the next. Considering the price I payed I didn’t expect it to be that good but I love it so much I will use this machine all the time Only thing I’m concerned about is the spool housing is plastic, it may be strong enough but I took out the three year cover as a reassurance 10 out of 10 Argos

Not just a good sewing machine for a beginner but a very serviceable workhorse for everyday sewing jobs and easy to lift around. The 14 stitches meet most of the likely requirements - hemming, buttonholes, mending jobs. Machine comes with spare bobbins, and needles . I have various sewing machines - from electronic to old mechanical family heirlooms but this one is the one I would not like to be without. Optional extra sewing feet and atachments are available, if required. Very happy to have it.

Great value, lovely little machine, compact and lightweight. Easy to move around the house and store. Built in handle makes lifting and carrying a dream. Good range of stitches and good selection of accessories. Plenty more accessories available to purchase depending on what clever things you want to do with this very capable little machine. Using for patchworking and making some new baby gifts for a friend. So easy to use, concise little user manual. 3yr warranty as standard. Love this machine.
