I really loved Broken sword when it came out "back in the day" and have played every itteration of it since then. (along with a bunch of lesser "pretender" titles) I snapped it up when they remade it for the gameboy advance, but found it frustrating due to the small screen and controls hampering, what are some very logical and well structured puzzles. I was concerned this would be the case with this DS re-hash of Shadow of the Templars, but i was not dissapointed. The interface is very tidy, meaning that the only thing stopping progression through the games' gripping story is your imagination and puzzle-solving skills, as opposed to just not seeing X object required.(Discworld Noir i'm looking at you!!!!)The DS's unique assets also suit the game and aren't used in a gimmicky way, they actually enhance the gameplay. The two screens also help with adventuring, and you can always see your character's face, and thus their subsequent reactions to what you discover over the course of the adventure. A minor addition but it improved the experience all the same.I'm generally frustrated by the state of gaming at the moment, with a constant stream of dodgy remakes and ports flooding the shelves; and an even larger tidal wave of terrible games using the wii/DS controls for gimmicky mini-games following in its wake. This game therefore serves as a ray of hope for me, as it is one of the few games i have played in the past 10 years where the plot actually meant something, and i generally was interested enough to follow it to its conclusion. Not only that but its also a very good remake, being both true to the original, whilst also building on its winning formula. The dialogue is genuinely witty and funny as well, at the same time as being very quotable. For those like me who have already played the game through back in the 90's on pc, there is much to the directors cut that may peak your interest still. Not only is this the only faithful portable adaptation of broken sword to date, (the GBA just didn't make the cut for this type of gaming) the game also includes several new sections where you play Nico including a section that precedes George Stobbart's introduction to the tale.Overall a great purchase for anyone who likes good stories, murder mysteries or good games in general. Fingers crossed the equally excellent Broken Sword 2 also gets a remake with such attention to detail.

Way back in the day I bought this game for the PSOne, having been a fan of P&C adventure games since I owned the likes of Indiana Jones etc on the Amiga. At the time (mid 90s I think) I became a massive fan of this game, to the point I was playing it around the clock instead of knuckling down to some serious A Level study. So, all these years later, nostalgia kicked in when I saw a Director's Cut released for the DS and it had to be bought. On the whole, the game ports to the handheld system really well, with the conversations now taking place in animated windows as opposed to written dialogue across the screen. Sadly, the little DS's capacity doesn't stretch to including the voice acting that made the original so good, but it's a minor blip. The new content is great too. Introducing Nico's motivation is a great bit of back story and it introduces some very unique puzzles. Top marks for this innovation. For me though, the major bugbear, and the reason the game only gets four stars instead of five, is that the death scenes from the original have been completely removed. In the original game, you were always on your guard as in certain areas a mistake often led to George's death. Not only did this add to the sense of adventure it was highly entertaining too. On the DS version, George will now himself perform an action that previously required timing on the part of the player. For those who missed out on the original, the death scenes can be viewed on Youtube. All in all, Broken Sword: The Director's Cut is a cut above all the other P&C games available on the DS presently and I only hope the entire series follows suit soon.

I've never played this sort of game before (having only used my Christmas-present DS for the likes of Scrabble and brain-training up until now!) and was a little worried that I'd find the game too hard to get into (I'm the sort who really hates reading manuals!) or 'too young' - but after 5 minutes or so of picking up the game (and a quick glance at the accompanying guide) I had no problems at all! The plot is really interesting, and the game itself is great fun, and even though suitable for youngsters is equally absorbing for a 40-something like me - and some of the dialogue is hilarious! It's just seen me through a rainy weekend away, and made the 300-mile car-journey fly by!(Thankfully I wasn't driving!) I've nearly finished it now - and can't wait for the next one to come out! The only ones not quite so impressed with it are my kids - who haven't had the chance to play it yet, and have had a weekend of total role-reversal with ME seeminingly ignoring THEM for a change! ("Mum? MUM!!!! I'm talking to you!!!! OI!!! Can't you put that game DOWN for a minute?) Brilliant!

I've never played Broken Sword and got this on a whim, however I was pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable a game it is. The graphics are excellent for the DS, especially the cut-scenes, and the dialogue is superb, including the subtle witty digs at the English and Americans. Gameplay could be considered short, clocking in at around eleven hours, but its the perfect way to while away a couple of night shifts. However, the first few hours were the most enjoyable for me, especially when controlling journalist Nico. I thought the puzzles while investigating the assassination were the best of the game, and I got slightly frustrated when the game seemed to descend to 'go here, talk to this person,go back, talk to this person'. I was also slightly disappointed with the ending, as I was expecting a large puzzle to end with, and instead thought it ended rather abruptly. All in all, a great adventure for the DS, but disappointed me slightly towards the end after an excellent start.

I must say this is one of the best games for DS in this genre. I did read reviews before purchasing the ganes and the reviews were all excellent with the occasional review saying that there is too much dialogue. For me personally the game lived up to the expectation I had for it:- good story- not too easty but not too difficult too- good graphics- good controlsBUT I have given it 4 starts not because I am disappointed but because of:- it is true that some times the dialogue was too long and in places absilutely unneccesary- using the hints is a bit annoying. I did not really need them but in the few occasions that I wanted hints it gacve him hints for things I already did so that was disappointing- I feel there should be more puzzles and problem solving.it did not feel like a puzzle game more like a story with some puzzle solving which was not difficult or challenging at allOverall great game but if it had more puzzles and less dialogue it would have been perfect!

After a run of disappointments with Prof Leyton and Pandora's box (not yet reviewed; will have another go at it before I do) and the Titanic disaster, I was thrilled to find Broken Sword on the recommendation of other Amazon users. It's not easy, but it's not so difficult that you give up either. The story line is intriguing, the game responds to the stylus properly, and there are just enough hints to help you through. Hints aren't limited, but the idea is to get through the game with as few as possible.I don't play for very long at a time, so it's lasting me well. There are 4 save files so two or more can save their games independently, and these can be deleted when you finish. The only thing I haven't liked about it was the long hoohah at the beginning with the game credits; but it's a satisfying, interesting, and great-to-play game, which for me is what it's all about.

After reading the reviews on Amazon i was expecting great gaming and this, so far, has not disappointed me. The greatest plus for me has been that I haven't had to cheat, i'm terrible when it comes to the cop out of the walkthrough! The puzzles are not exactly brain straining, having said that i'm a bit stuck at the moment, but for me that is actually a bonus! No silly, obscure pairings of stuff in your inventory, just a bit of proper mystery solving! Far more satisfying than some of the games i've played on DS and PC!It is a very wordy game, you have to read all of it, but some of it is very funny (funnier than all of the games i've played!)and it adds to the concentration required to play the story of the game.It only loses a star for me because some of the puzzles could have been a bit more tricky! And the hints are way too easy to get!

First confession, i haven't played this for DS but i have played on pc and playstation, i want it for ds as i like mobile gameplay and broken sword is one of the best games out there after monkey island and grim fandango. There seems to be mixed opinions over this game, people who played broken sword first love this, people who were looking for something like professor layton are not that keen.I actually bought Layton looking for something like broken sword before it was available for DS, i love Layton games but not as much as broken sword. i would argue they are totally different types of game although both labelled as adventure Layton is actually more like brain training and big brain academy with a weak plot thrown in.both brilliant but if you are old school adventure games like me (monkey island, grim fandango etc) buy broken sword.

I loved this. I bought this after cancelling my pre-order for Sherlock Homes DS game. I did so on the recommendation of other reviewers and soooo glad I did. What I love is the humour. You can make this game amusing by continuing to talk to characters even if you know they will not add any more to the mystery solving. The characters are varied any some quite wacky! The mystery itself is excellent and help of a walkthrough type is available if you need it. I was only tempted once when I really couldn't figure out what next..so you never feel like you've hit a brick wall as with some other games. It's great too get out and about too..all over the world in fact. Some games like Nancy Drews can be a bit same-old same-old rooms, but this has many new different areas to explore.Don't want to finsh it..love it!!

Broken Sword works well on the DS, using the stylus and touch screen. A few humorous comments and video clips make the whole story more lively and immersive. Some of the puzzles were frustrating and I had to resort to the hints a few times but others seemed relatively easy. The gameplay was mostly linear with a little room for going in the wrong direction but you couldn't progress until certain goals were achieved.I found myself putting off playing because I didn't want it to finish. The last 10-15% of the adventure was easily solved and therefore slighlty disappointing but overall I enjoyed playing. I have also had Secret Files: Tunguska which relied more on logically combining various objects to solve a problem. This made it easier but sometimes tedious. Broken Sword mostly managed to avoid this.

I am a massive fan of the original PC version of this game so I thought I would give this a go to revisit the glory!I wasn't dissapointed, there are some extras here which will interest a fan like myself which I wasn't expecting (an extra prologue ivolving Nico's adventures prior to meeting the dashing Stobart). As a fan however there is one tiny snag which although it doesn't ruin the enjoyment of the game removes some of it's character in my opinion. The voice over seems to have been removed, no longer can you marvel at the legendary line 'Fitzy's been runned over' as shouted by one of my favourite characters in the whole series to date!-But I still have the originals so it's not a greatburden to bear to play one of my favourite games on the bus!

Broken sword is a great game both pc and ds version. The game is made up of little puzzles and the storyline is a very complex and compeling. I'd say this game can be played by children 10 over and a good game throughout.Although there is no voice dialogue unlike the PC version, this doesnt matter as it utilises the DS's ability to show two things at once on the two screens and includes scenes which were not included in the original, so much more to do. I bought this as I enjoyed the PC version so much that I fancied playing this wherever and whenever ie in bed or on move in my Dad's car.Lots of good humour and excellent action packed fun - well recommended. If you are new to adventure games then this is the place to start.

My husband pointed me in the direction of this game; up to now, I've been doing Dr Kawashima's More Brain Training, and the Professor Layton series of games on the DSiXL. Knowing me to be an RPG fan, he felt this would interest me, as well as providing puzzles to solve. How right he was! It is a great game, very absorbing, with more than a little humour in it also. One can also stop at any point if one has (horror!) household duties to perform.I saw a review written by a mother in (I think) her 30s or early 40s, saying how absorbing the game is, and I thoroughly concur.Getting a little further towards solving the mystery is a great way to spend half an hour of "me-time".

A good play for all those nostalgic players. The new puzzles fit in well with the old story, although I didn't really much care about learning more about Nico's past. George is still quite a funny character to play. The controls using the DS are easy to use and learn to you although a bit annoying at times where the object you want to select is just below the inventory icon and you select that instead.I didn't much like that they changed the beginning and that those split second decisions where you could survive or be killed were removed, but overall I am pleased with this game. Definitely still the best one of the series.

Wow! What a fantastic game. All the original magic of this classic adventure is here, with the added benefits of some superb extra scenes. All the humour, suspense and intrigue is brought to life with style on the DS, and the new interface and added character portraits really add something. Thanks to the fantastic work done by Revolution and co with the new content and new control system it feels like it was made today, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Absolutely superb game, and a must have for anyone who likes great games on their DS.Bring on Broken Sword 2 DS!
