A wonderful Aluna water filter received for review courtesy of Brita and Vine. This is a wonderful, aesthetically pleasing and neat design that looks fabulous in the kitchen. It is the perfect size to be useful but not so big as to get in the way or take up acres of space on one’s worktop or in the fridge.It comprises the jug within jug design or maybe funnel within jug at the base of which is mounted the Maxtra + filter (one comes with each jug but also available in packs from Amazon). The instructions are easy to follow but there is a vast multi lingual leaflet within. Leaving that aside, one opens the sealed filter and as indicated I swilled it out in clear water before positioning it.I washed the apparatus before filling it but is seemed clean and hygienically wrapped as soon as it came out of the box. Position the filter at the bottom of the funnel assembly and one is ready for action.Water filters through in no time and is ready to drink within a few seconds. I like to position mine in the fridge as I prefer my water chilled. Of course, one could also use the filtered water for ice cubes if space is at a premium.The whole thing just works and it has some delightful styling cues. Okay it’s just a jug but it looks wonderful with a successful blend of clear plastics, frosted ones for the funnel assembly and the smooth white lid that fits perfectly. It’s also tactile and one finds oneself stroking it (we don’t have a cat or a dog, sadly!) unnecessarily.My absolute favourite innovation, however, is the filter replacement indicator. Our fridge has a water filter and every 6 months the warning light comes on and I am reminded I have to drag the whole thing from its recess in the kitchen, get behind it, somehow!, and then replace the filter. With jugs such as these, however, the replacement depends more on water throughput and how frequently one uses it, which is harder thing to keep track of. I was fortunate to review some months ago a similar Brita water filter and I could not persuade the little light that indicated that the filter needs changing to operate and thus end up changing the filter approximately every month. This has a fabulous clear and unequivocal LCD display that is activated as one first uses the unit. It gives a clear and accurate display of how soon the Maxtra + filter will need changing. It also has a nice little blinking indicator which shows that it is keeping an eye on things for you! Please note that this must be battery operated and although it’s safe to put your Brita in the dishwasher if you have a mind, but please remember to remove the filter and of course this little indicator or, better still, don’t put the lid in the dishwasher.Lastly, the taste. I cannot convince myself of any marked difference in taste. Manchester has wonderful tap water but I still regularly purchase bottled water. My wife and family insist that tea in particular tastes much better when the water has been passed through this filter and simply from an economic point of view it makes more sense to buy this, filter one’s own water than buy bottled which can work out expensive. The other point is that by keeping it in the fridge I am more likely to have a drink of this, use it in tea or coffee and avoid sugary drinks and cordials when thirsty. I am sure in certain poorer quality water areas this argument becomes more compelling.All in all, this is a fabulous and well-executed solution to safe drinking of one of the healthiest drinks one can find – water ! Brita alumna cool water filter jug and cartridge.......What you get in the box-1 sealed water filter maxtra cartridge1 jug1 water filter holder section1 lid complete with a water filter “timer”to indicate when the water filter needs changing - batteries are in place.Pros.......There can not be a person alive who isn’t ashamed at the amount of plastic water bottles we have have discarded into our seas, or into land fill, this jug can help to replace at least some of them. Each water filter can filter 40gallons of water- this is 181.844 litres..so 181less bottles are created/used/discarded.Each filter lasts roughly 2 months and compatable (and cheaper)water filters are available and do fit this jug.This fits my very average fridge door perfectly.The water has a noticeable difference in taste.Brita filters remove “hardness” ( I presume something like limescale?) copper,chlorine,lead and sediment.With the lid popped in place correctly it pours well, with the little hygiene flap lifting under the pressure and allowing a good stream of water out of the jug.Brita filters are recyclable at certain stores.Cons........To fill the jug the whole jug lid has to be removed- if you try to refil using the spout it misses the filter.The jug can only filter 1litre of water at a time as this is the maximum amount that the filter holder section holds.To filter 1 litre of water took 22mins.The jug lid is difficult to replace and pop back into place, but this has improved with each use.Filters are expensive, I have been able to use a compatable filter which is cheaper but buying genuine is expensive.Water filters can not be recycled in standard U.K. recycling collections, only in certain high street stores.Is it worth it?.............Absolutely, I feel ashamed at the mess we are causing with our one use plastic water bottles, anything that cuts down the numbers clogging up our seas, beaches and land fill sites is worth it.Whilst it is expensive to buy the filters, it is still significantly cheaper than buying bottled water.

For some reason, our tap water is tasting rather unpleasant, already reported to the water board, but I decided that since I do try to drink a lot of water it was time to try a water filter jug. The Brita's range is really expensive but I thought that this was quite a bargain and since it's a slim fit designed to fit in the door shelf of your fridge the best design. Also if I was to be honest the fact that you can pick up generic filter pods for Britas jugs much cheaper than the branded ones was also a factor.I read other reviews and I see some people aren't happy you have to take the whole lid off and some have issues getting it to fit but I don't mind having to take it off and it fits well.Because I do drink a lot of water I seemed to be constantly filling it but I now fill it and as soon as the water has passed through the filter I decant it into a much larger water jug and do that until the larger jug is filled with filtered water. Again this is just because I try to drink 3-4 litres a day.The filters are only supposed to last 1 month and in fact, there is a very simple little meter on it which counts down the weeks so you know when the filter needs to be changed and again they're rather pricey but cheap ones do seem to be more readily available so you may want to factor in future costs when choosing a water filter.As for the flavour of the water to me I can taste something, it's hard to describe but I think that because apart from my morning coffee I don't drink squashes or pop or fizzy drinks so my palette is more sensitive to subtle changes which most people really just wouldn't even taste. So I'm happy with it but of course whatever was happening with my tap water supply seems to have been resolved and now I can drink tap water without the need to filter it, actually, that just reminds me yes this filter DID remove the unpleasant taint my tap water had so I'd definitely say that's a win but now my tap water has gone back to being drinkable I will not bother using the jug.

BRITA Aluna Cool Water Filter Jug and Cartridge is a great way of purifying water without having the need to purchase expensive bottles of water. I have used these jugs for years, one for cold water which I keep in a fridge and a jug we keep beside the kettle which provides me with great tasting tea which for me and my family who are all avid tea drinkers. The difference in the taste and even the look of the water is pure and clean without any horrible aftertaste.The difference for this jug is the cartridge as this is a new filter Maxtra+ filter cartridge which has a finer mesh which removes even the smallest of particles which can be found in tap water.Within the cartridge is Micro carbonpearls which reduces chlorine and other impurities which can and has affected the taste of our tap water, and this can also help when using water for cooking as this chlorine can affect the taste of your food.The one main reason I do love is about using this filtered water when using it in my kettle as I have noticed it has extended the life of my kettles as no longer there is no limescale which can destroy the inside of the kettle. Plus, once and again when using the filtered water in the kettle create a pure and clean tea with no cloudiness whatsoever.This is a larger design of these jugs as it holds a full 2.4l filtered water in the bottom of the jug which is below where the cartridge is situated. The full jug will hold a full 3.5L of water which is perfect for this family of tea and coffee drinkers.I also like how the lid has an Electronic memo reminder which automatically notifies me to replace the filter cartridge which is so handy and very convenient.The BRITA Aluna Cool Water Filter Jug and filter cartridge is a great way to provide you with cool, clean water which has all the qualities of bottled water without the added expense or the inconvenient disposing of plastic water bottles which is not only inconvenient but bad for the environment.Happy to recommend.

We live in a hard water area so using a water filter jug is important to us for both enhancing the taste of our drinks and preventing limescale building up in the kettle and coffee machine. We have used the older Brita Maxtra filter system for quite a while and have been very pleased with the performance of the cartridges – this Brita Aluna jug uses the newer Brita Maxtra+ cartridges that supposedly offer even better results. The new “plus” filter fits our older Maxtra jug perfectly but I think that most Maxtra+ jugs will only work with these new-style filters. It is difficult to tell much difference in the taste of the water between the old and new filters and the limescale performance seems about the same – that being good.The new cartridges claim better performance at removing copper and lead, which could be beneficial if you have older plumbing at home, and the filtration of other impurities seems to be effective. It is difficult to recommend the “plus” filter rather than the older Maxtra cartridge but I expect the older cartridges will be phased out over time so the new version will become the standard. I have no hesitation in recommending Brita products in general as we have always had good results from the brand – however, this Aluna jug is a budget model that is tricky to fill as the whole lid needs to be removed first. Also the new “plus” filters are more expensive than the original Maxtra ones, and Brita still use an electronic reminder device on the lid rather than an app, as some other brands do, to let you know when a cartridge change is due. This Aluna jug from Brita is a reasonable option if you need a smallish model to fit in your fridge door – but as the long-term cost will be for cartridges I would recommend spending a bit more initially on a better designed jug that is easier to use.

This is one of the smaller Brita jugs, so fits in a fridge door easily. It’s also one of the cheaper jugs, which is reflected to some extent in the quality of finish. The underside of the top of the handle has uncomfortably angled edges but you don’t normally touch them, in use. Others have complained that the plastic is thinner than on older jugs and the lid isn’t a great fit, but we haven’t found any problems. There’s no rubber ring on the base, to soften the impact when you put it down and stop it sliding, but again that hasn’t caused us any difficulties, and we have stone worktops. It does the job perfectly adequately and is a good buy at the current £12.The ‘electronic memo reminder’ is of limited value.It just tells you when four weeks are up, regardless of how much water you’ve put through it. Still, it's better than nothing, although we tend to judge the need for a new filter more by the scum on tea than anything else.The one thing I detest is the incredibly awkward and unwieldy multi-lingual instructions on a sheet of flimsy paper about 95x60 cms folded to 19x10. I guess you get the same sheet with all current Brita jugs, though, so don’t let it stop you buying.The filter cartridges are perhaps more important than the jug itself. In both a blind tasting and a scum test, we felt that Matxra+ produced distinctly better results than Maxtra. Our chalky South Downs water tastes dreadful, unfiltered, and until now has been less than perfect even after filtering, with a slightly musty, brackish taste and still some film on tea. With Maxtra+, the taste is significantly better and, at least with a new cartridge, there is no film at all. Maxtra+ cartridges are expensive though. Best use camelcamelcamel to monitor prices on Amazon. You should find them for £3 or so each, if you’re not in a hurry.

This is a well priced and designed water jug with sleek lines that ensure it will sit within the doors of most fridges. If you are not used to using such a jug you can expect to experience a noticeable difference in the taste of your water and that you use to make coffee, but more especially tea. The chemical tang you quite often find in tap water these days is definitely substantially reduced. If you fill your kettle a lot you will also notice a big reduction in the limescale build up around the element. Washing the jug and fitting the cartridges is easy-but do make sure they click in place before use.For readers who are already users of a Brita or similar device,the picture is a bit more mixed-the benefits are as described, but the new MAXTRA + offered here does not seem to me to offer any subjective improvement in the flavour of the water. Of course that does not mean there are aren't subtle improvements, but they are hard to discern. It is an important consideration as these new filters are substantially more expensive (a spot check on amazon had them at 30 quid for six).Full marks to Brita though for offering a simple electronic readout telling you when your cartridges should be changed. The readout starts at 100% and the four bars reduce at the rate of one a week until it flashes to tell you to replace it. This is a big improvement on rivals who want you to download an App or have a primitive plastic numbered roller to keep count.If you are new to the benefits of filtered water this is a good value and effective jug, but think if this new cartridge is really vital before buying.

I bought this due to living in a hard water area in Hampshire - everything is covered in limescale - my glasses, pots, pans etc... my cups of tea had a layer of grunge lying on top. I tried using bottled water for everything, but there was still a lot of limescale everywhere, including grungy tea. I decided to try a Brita jug, in case it might reduce the limescale...this was a good decision. I bought the jug from a discount supermarket, opened it and tried it straight away. I then made a cuppa with the filtered water, and hey, woohoo, no grunge on top of my tea, happy days. I then boiled some water in a pot on the hob, to see if there would be the telltale complete coverage of the pot in white scale...but I was pleasantly surprised - no scale.So, I'm delighted that such a small financial outlay (under a tenner plus extra Maxtra filters) has made such a big difference. If you're in a hard water area, and you're tired of having to remove limescale from everything, then try this jug, it's very good performance for very little money.

We had a problem with our tap water messing up our Steam Generator and Kettle requiring constant descaling. At one point I bought some water bottled specifically for Steam Irons and the Steam Generator's (2.5 Litre tank) performance was enhanced but it was not cost-effective. Using filtered water has reduced the frequency of descaling because we use both the Iron and Kettle very frequently.It was very easy to see limescale building up at the bottom of our Kettle, now this has significantly reduced.I haven't noticed tea (or other beverages) to have improved in taste as the description for the Filter Jug say but I appreciate the filtered water. I was worried about the cost of replacement filters,thinking it was as bad as the Printer/ink rip-off. I did not need to worry as they are very much affordable especially with 12 Filters deals to last an entire year.

Does the job as intended, if I had to complain about anything it would be that I suppose perhaps I should've paid the bit extra for the one with the flip top lid. Filling it could be slightly easier, but again, I chose to save a few £'s.I would also recommend that once you put the lid back on, go ahead and give it a firm push down, all around, just so that it's secure and no leaking happens when you pour. I am not saying this is an issue, it really does become second nature, but I have had flatmates not put the lid back on securely and well...I wish they had :)

Latest in a long line of Brita water filter products from the leading German water jug company. This one takes the new Maxtra+ filters but uses the older 'traditional' style of lid and jug which has the LCD manual water monitor (weeks 1 to 4) rather than the newer valve-type one that measures water use and advises you when to change the filter.As you'd expect from Brita, excellent tolerances and high quality plastic and all dishwasher safe (except LCD indicator).Slim enough to fit in most fridge doors. There is a wide range of colours and styles available.

My reason for getting this jug is on health grounds. I’m aware of the impurities in tap water, and as I tend to drink a lot of it I’d like to make it as pure as possible, which this jug does. It is supplied with a single cartridge and the jug itself is pretty well-made. It is shaped to fit in the door of the fridge which is very handy, although it’s worth noting that it does still take up quite a bit of the space there. I do have some concerns about the ongoing cost of using this jug and cartridges, but I also appreciate having clean water to drink.

I have been a devotee of Brita water filters for well over 30 years, and no other brand surpasses them. The advent of the Maxtra cartridge has been a significant development - they just about get to 4 weeks duration, although I still need to use some vinegar to de-scale some minor residue in my kettle by that time. The previous cartridges really needed to be changed after 3 weeks in my hard water area.A solid brand, with a recognised reputation that I can only recommend whole-heartedly.

Live in a highly chalky area and our water type is hard. Drinking water would always have to be from bottled water. After buying this jug; we filter our tap water (which was cloudy and chalky) and wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! This jug has changed all that. We use it constantly and the water tastes lovely. Beautifully clear and refreshing. Would recommend this jug to anyone who wants a change to hard water. We use filtered water for the kettle, Teasmade, coffee machine, iron.

I am super picky about my water profile taste, I didn't even know that was a thing. But it is. Living in Central London I can't stand the taste of tap water but this makes it bearable. I just change the filter every 3 months or so I don't really bother with the little indicator on the top which I thinks goes down way too fast. Also the top is a bit annoying to click on and off when you refill, I always feel like I am going to break it but after about a year I haven't!
