This isn't the first Brita 'Maxtra'-type water filter jug I've used. The first was a Brita Aluna Xl. That was o.k. - well, I'm still using it - but it has a fairly limited capacity and the 'memo' cartridge meter function is pretty basic, simply warning you when you've been using the same filter for a while. But this one is much better. For a start, the meter actually does a bit more than simply time the usage. According to the manual, the meter:'...monitors the filtration performance and indicates the remaining cartridge life . The three-way measurement takes into consideration the volume of water filtered, water quality (hardness) and time'.So, whereas the meter on the Aluna simply sits on top of the jug, this one has a couple of sensors that dip into the pre-filtered water. It also indicates when water is going through the system by displaying a flashing row of drops.Another feature of this water filter jug is that you don't have to take the lid off in order to fill it (unlike the 'Aluna'). There is a covered hole in the top on a spring. When you run water on to it, it drops down, allowing the water to enter. Of course, the first time I filled it, I opened the tap far to wide with the result I sprayed myself and the whole kitchen with water - but, after a little practise, I determined the force of water required to open the trap door without soaking the kitchen. It certainly seems to have a much larger capacity than my previous 'Aluna' model. That is good, but it does also mean that the jug is pretty hefty when full. Still, it has a very sturdy rubberised hand grip that feels solid and more than capable of handling the weight. Similarly, it has four rubberised feet which means that it stays put on my worktop and is not going to slide off if knocked. It is quite wide and does not fit in my fridge, but the 'Aluna' model does, so I'm not really that worried about that. Anyway, if you want to use it for chilled drinking water, you could fill up large plastic bottles from it and keep those in the fridge. It does pour very well. (That's a good tip for keeping the cost of running your fridge down, by the way: always try to keep it full!)The whole thing, except for the meter, can be washed in a dishwasher and it is a quite easy job to remove and replace the meter. The manual is o.k., but it covers 9 languages and nearly all current models, so can be a bit 'if yours is like this, then do this, but if it's like that, then do that' and you're sat there thinking 'well, it's not like this or that'. No, its not that bad, really.All-in-all, a major improvement on my older 'Aluna' model. Both use 'Maxtra' filters and, even though the water that comes out of the taps is perfectly drinkable, filtering it does make a noticeable and pleasant difference to tea. Not sure about coffee 'cos I might as well face it, I'm addicted to tea.

PROs- There is definitely a distinguishable improvement in the taste of the water. Some impurities are removed however the final taste does not compare to that of bottled water, I still prefer bottled water.- The filter itself has a rubber base allowing it to be impact resistant at the base and slip resistant.- The handle is also lined with rubber allowing comfortable non slip grip when holdingCONS- If you overfill through the pour thorough lid water leaks out through the sides and handle area - which can be a pain- If you filter through more than approx 2.5 litres at any one time waters collects in the central compartment that holds the filter in situ. You then have to take the filter out to remove this water - pain!- I also find that the filter meter technology is not accurate. It does not matter how frequently or minimally I use it. It last approx a month before I’m prompted to replace the filter.- To fill to full potential 3.5 litres would need to remove entire central unit which isn’t difficult to do however, filtering through 3.5 litres of water whilst central unit is in place is not achievable.- If you are looking to buy a filter as you under the impression filtered water is safer then me enlighten you; If you are living in a 1st world country your tap water is very very safe and a brita filter will do essentially nothing to the microbacterial content of the water, if anything by removing the chlorine disinfectant it will actually increase the pathogen content if filtered water is left sanding for too long.PRODUCT FEATURES- Large counter top design with 2.4 Litres filtered water capacity, 3.5 Litres total capacity- dishwasher safe (except lid) and with pour through lid and non slip base- Meter technology measures your water hardness, volume usage and time for accurate cartridge replacement- Features formula MAXTRA+ filter cartridge with 25 percent finer mesh for better reduction of coarse particles, lasts around one month- Micro carbon pearls reduce chlorine and organic impurities which affect taste and odour of food and drink- Ion exchange pearls permanently absorb lead and copper and reduce limescale, for household appliance protection- brita claims to remove impurities such as calcium, chlorine, magnesium and leadCONCLUSIONThe taste of the water is definitely improved by this filter therefore will continue to use it. (I’ve been using Brita filters for years and I personally feel that their filter quality has declined over the years).

I'm a big fan of Brita water filters - the tap water in Cambridge has a very unpleasant degree of chlorination, and I've been using Brita filters for my drinking water for many years.First and foremost, the Brita filter technology is very good - even when a cartridge has been used for far longer than recommended, it still removes any scent of chlorine from the filtered water. The taste of tap water is much improved, and in hard water areas like this, using only filtered water to fill the kettle certainly reduces (but does not eliminate completely) scale formation. In terms of the benefits of filtering water, the Elemaris is as good as any other product in Brita's range.A few things differentiate this particular model from other Brita filters.First, it uses the new Maxtra cartridges. These are a great improvement on the original Brita cartridges - they filter just as efficiently, but they do it a lot faster, so that there is a lot less waiting about for water to pass through the filter before you can use it.This is a large capacity filter - it holds over 2 litres of filtered water - and it has an automatic opening flap on the top for filling, so you just hold it under the tap without needing to remove the lid, and a small float closes the flap when the filter is full. The large size of the jug means it won't fit into a fridge door shelf, however. The significant differentiator, though, is the new filter usage monitor. Old Brita filters relied on a simple calendar, or more recently a simple timer that counted down 4 weeks and then advised you to change the cartridge. This was rather unsatisfactory - I live on my own, so in 4 weeks I wouldn't have filtered nearly as much water as, say, a large family, but the indicator would recommend changing the cartridge at the same time for both households. This is clearly wrong - Brita have now rectified this with a sensor that detects both how many times the filter has been filled, and also the hardness of the water being filtered. Time will tell, but hopefully this should result in a more reasonable recommendation for the frequency of filter replacement - we shall see!If you find the taste of your tap water objectionable, I can strongly recommend a Brita filter.

I bought this Brita Elemaris XL water filter jug to replace the Brita Marella XL water filter jug...not because there was anything wrong with the Marella but it was blue...my husband bought a blue jug to go in a black/white kitchen....it's in the details I told him! Anyhow both jugs come in the bigger family size of 3.5 litres. The filtered water tastes good and as we live in a very hard water area, we pre-filter water before filling the kettle, iron etc. The water filters quickly too. Apart from being available in both black and white in the XL size (The Marella is Blue and White in the XL) there are some subtle differences. In my opinion, the Elemaris looks better and has a greater quality feel about it.It is easier to poor and easier to hold as the handle is better ergonomically. It is also easier to fill as the cap drops when the water hits it rather than having to hold the fill cap open. The Elemaris also has colour co-ordinated anti-slip feet at the bottom with gaps underneath that will allow any spilt water to dry rather than be trapped under the jug leaving a wet surface. However the Elemaris does have a couple of design flaws? The fill hole is at the front of the jug meaning that if you have unfiltered water in the fill chamber and you want to pour filtered water the unfiltered water comes out of the fill hole so the two mix. This only happens in the extreme if you have the fill chamber full but it can and does happen. I always use the jug when the fill chamber is empty or nearly empty. Secondly, If you fill the fill chamber quite high the wates escapes from the handle (Where the top of the jug and the handle meet) I kept getting little puddles on my work surface and couldn't fathom from where they came from until one day I felt it coming down the handle after I had filled the jug. It doesn't flood the surface because as soon as enough water has filtered through the water level has dropped below the leak line. I am aware of these flaws and they are easy to work around but I have given the jug 4 stars to reflect this. It doesn't affect the daily use of this filter jug and the Elemaris is the jug I prefer both in looks and ease of use. I would recommend this water filter jug.

Very impressed by this water jug. Purchased it at a reduced price.., about the same as I pqid for a smaller, inferior one but this one is in a whole different class.Yes, it was probably reduced because of a design flaw.., the tap water could leak out by the handle because the handle is placed lower than the sides of the jug.., but u just have to fill it with 50mls less water.., hardly an enormous effort to overcome.Unlike my last Brita jug, you don't have to spend minutes trying to fit the filter holder into the jug (no notches to match up or break).., it just slides in as easy as anything. Although I have always used Brita filter jugs, the plastic on this one feels much better quality and longer lasting. It also takes the filters I used before (Maxtra) so no wasteage there. It stores enough water so I have to refill it about half the times I did. Brilliant, as although I am lucky enough to have a teen to make coffee sometimes, he seems only to be able to make it whilst emptying the jug and leaving it empty. No more delays waiting for the water to filter when I have to make a coffee myself! I would imagine you can get four very large mugs of coffee from the water this jug stores. Ideal for a family. The thing that no one seems to comment on when you have a water jug.., is that you don't have to keep replacing kettles. Before I started using them, I was lucky if a kettle lasted a year, usually 6 months. They all started leaking from the bottom. It didn't matter if they were cheap or expensive, they all leaked within a space of months. I'm still using the same kettle 2 years later since I started using filter jugs. So it saves me a lot of money.I have wide door shelving in my fridge so can put the jug on these shelves., but people with a small fridge will have problems with this. But I doubt anyone who needed a large jug like this would have a small fridge. And the water tastes wonderful. Its sweet and refreshing not tasting of chlorine and metal like the water straight out of the tap in this area often does.As you can see, I can't say enough about this filter jug and would recommend it to anyone.

Well so far so good. Having previously had a Kenwood round water filter jug for several years which was bought locally. Unfortunately the shop stopped selling them and the cartridges. Recently it was decided that a new jug was needed and having read the reviews it was decided to buy this one.Originally the Marella was the first choice but having read the reviews it seemed that water spilled out from the lid when filling. So it was decided to try the Elemaris instead. The lid has what's called a Britta meter which is obviously contains a mirco chip (and likely a very small battery) which is why it cannot be washed. In reality you don't really need it. The booklet advises that the cartridge be replaced once a month. It also advises that the filter will filter about 100 litres before it needs replacing. If been used with a family of 4 it will probably last about a month. If you live alone then probably about up to 4 months. If the numbers are correct then it seems that those in Britta house holds drink less than 1 litre of water a day. At less than 1 litre a day my medical consultant advises that you will likely become dehydrated quite soon and thus constipated. Apparently constipation occurs partly due to lack of fluid intake.Forget the meter, simply taste the filtered water by it self on a regular basis, if it tastes ok then it don't need to be replaced. If it tastes yukky the replace it.So would I recommend it?, yes and from Amazon. Tesco's are charging £30 + delivery for this. Argos the same price as Amazon but with delivery charge as extra. Amazon price includes free delivery.Defiantly glad this was bought.Just adding a foot note to this review. If your ordering replacement Maxtra cartridges from Amazon, beware.A 6 pack costs £16. A 4 pack costs £9.99 and a 3 pack costs £11.97.With Amazon now some orders below £10 incur a delivery charge of about £4. Thus the 6 pack will be free, the 4 pack about £14 and the 3 pack free.It may actually cheaper to buy these Maxtra cartridges from the super market rather than Amazon. At least that's what I'm thinking.

I am very happy with this product. The pros and cons are as follows:Pros:- The jug looks very nice- The jug is well-built: the rubber feet are useful for grip, the handle is ergonomically pleasant, the pouring flap works perfectly, and the filling mechanism is satisfactory (see below)- The jug, when purchased, was only marginally more expensive than its cheaper counterparts (also by Brita)Cons:- To fill the jug, you pour water onto a counterbalance. The weight of water pushes the counterbalance down, allowing water to enter the jug. Once the counterbalance moves down, this mechanism works fine. When you start pouring water onto the counterbalance, however, water splashes everywhere, making the task messier than it needs to be.- The water jug certainly improves the taste of the water, although it does not always taste as good as bottled water (I have tried the jug in multiple locations)- Small black particles end up in your water. I don't think this is a problem, but it psychologically detracts from the idea that the drinking water is "as good as bottled water".- The filters are expensive, although I bought 24 in a bundle for a good deal- The jug may hold 2.4L of air, but it cannot hold 2.4L of water because the water must sit below the filter. If the water level rises above this, unfiltered water sits in the upper compartment. This is an issue because it then leaks from the filling mechanism (counterbalance described earlier) whilst pouring. That said, jug holds more than enough water for 2-3 glasses of water.Summary:There are a few cons to this product but, all-in-all, I am happy with this product and would definitely recommend it to anybody who could afford the expensive cartridges. The jug alters the taste of the water, although I don't think it 'cleans' the water. If you read their website, they use phrases such as "removes the chlorine taste" rather than "removes the chlorine". If you are looking for a jug to clean your water, you may want to do some thorough research. If you simply want your water to taste nicer, this is a perfect solution.

Excellent quality plastic along with rubberised feet and a sturdy plastic/rubber handle. This Brita filter uses the standard Maxtra filters and can hold a total of 2.5L of filtered water. Compared to some to other brands which claim to filter water of all impurities and don't, these Maxtra filters are considered a by word when i comes down to water filtration. Not only do they work removing limescale, odours and other things such as chlorine from the water but they works faster than other brands too.In the top of the filter jug is a spring loaded dome shaped door, specifically designed so you can pour water directly onto the door and the water will go into the top filtration chamber, when you stop the tap the door automatically closes, this reduces the chances of water spraying everywhere too. This jug has a good pouring action on it with a little lid on the spout stopping it flooding out too quickly, again giving you control when using it. For cleaning, everything but the lid can be put in the dishwasher! The only downside is the little monitor screen mounted into the top which as far as i can see offers little in the way of useful information as it automatically tells you to replace the filter every 4 weeks and not when you necessarily need to, it's suppose to tell you the water hardness too but if you have limescale in your area i guess you already know how good/bad it is. Through extensive usage we have come to conclusion that every 2 months is ideal for changing the filter and that's based on us using it several times a day, everyday day!Verdict: We use this to filter water we put in the kettle for drinks and cooking and must say we are particularly please with the quality of the jug and performance of the Maxtra filters. If you live in a hard water area of perhaps have an unpleasant odour to your tap water then this is probably the best way to go!RECOMMENDED!

I used to use bottled water for drinking and cooking, until I purchased this jug. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase. The design is good, it looks elegant, and you don't need to open the lid to fill the water which is convenient. However, I agree with previous customer reviews that it leaks from the handle if filled to the top (hence 4 stars). I can definitely taste the difference between filtered water and tap water, it's got rid of the bleachy smell of tap water, and gives the water a slightly sweet/pure taste. There's a BRITA Meter in the lid, which is "the first intelligent cartridge exchange indicator with 3 Way measurement of water quality".This is somewhat convenient because it tells you when to change the cartridge. However I'm not too sure whether this actually gives an accurate measurement of the water quality, or it's just another posh version of the 'Memo' indicator found on some other BRITA jugs, which typically tells you to change after 1 month. This speculation initially came up as I saw the metering pins were actually in contact with the unfiltered water at the top part of the jug (i.e., not yet being filtered through the cartridge), so measuring the quality of unfiltered water is pointless in my opinion, and I can't justify the quality of unfiltered tap water changing from 100% to 0% over a matter of weeks. Well, I could be wrong, perhaps I haven't quite grasped the measuring mechanism of it yet. Anyway the other evidence was that, I went on a 1-week trip during which I obviously didn't use the jug, but the indicator still prompted me to change new cartridge after about 1 month of use (I didn't use it heavily in the other 3 weeks either). Having said that, even if it's just another version of 'memo' indicator which promps you to change the cartridge after 1 month, it's still better than not having it at all.

I've tried water filters before, and usually found them to be less than acceptable in terms of ease of use and effectiveness. Ironically, a few years back I bought a Brita kettle, that we ended up slinging, the taste was awful (and that wasn't cheap). So, somewhat reluctantly, and especially since it was such a good price, I decided to try this (Elemaris XL). Now insofar as the taste of our water (unfiltered), to be honest, I had no real problem with, but my wife doesn't like, and gets through 2l of bottled water a day to drink (she didn't mind tea and coffee with unfiltered water) Constantly buying cases of bottled water is both costly, and bulky, with the resultant plastic waste. So then,to this Jug filter. I have to say, it is brilliant, very well designed for ease of use, in fact it is a really quality piece of kit. The easy pour counterbalanced filling and pouring covers are superb. No flap to lift to fill, a delight to use. Water filter through into the main reservoir pretty quickly which is good, so even if totally empty you'll be good to go in a few short minutes. This is quite a big jug, with a large capacity (which is what we wanted), and we do now use for tea and coffee as well as purely plain drinking. My wife is very happy with the taste as am I, and no more constant bulk packs of bottled water. What we do is keep the jug filled and ready for tea and coffee etc; as well as filling a 2l lock and lock fridge door water jug. That way, chilled drinking water ready, and water ready for the kettle. The extra 2l for the fridge is a great standby for the kettle as well if you forget to refill the jug.Great product, great value, and well worth the money. I would definitely recommend. The taste is every bit as good as bottled water.I hope that you have found this review to be helpful.

For many years I have bought bottled water. I live in a hard water area but I grew up in a soft water area. I was OK drinking soft water from the tap but the hard water has a strong earthy taste. I was turned onto water filters after having dinner with friends. They served water from this BRITA Elemaris Water Filter Jug. I couldn't tell the difference between bottled water and this filtered water. I immediately bought the same BRITA jug and a pack of BRITA filters. I've been using the water filter for about 6 months now and I haven't bought a bottle of water since. It's easy to fit filters. They simply slot in under the lid.To prepare a new filter you need to immerse it in water and shake it for about a minute and then filter and discard the first 2 litres of filtered water. The water is drinkable on the 2nd fill. This is all a very simple and quick process. It takes minutes for the water to filter through so no waiting if you're desperate for a drink.I find the countdown timer on the jug handle to be a reasonably good indicator of when to change the cartridge. The water starts to taste earthy about a week after the indicator (electronic memo) suggests changing the cartridge. I tend to change the cartridge when I notice the change in taste rather than when the indicator suggests changing it. I have been changing the cartridge approximately once every month. This jug is a good size. We are a household of 2 people and we drink water regularly (including filling two sports bottles for the gym every day). We have a nice glass bottle that we use to serve water at the dinner table. I tend to fill the glass bottle from this filter jug and then refill the filter jug to ensure that we have plenty of water in reserve. We serve the water from the glass bottle and top up as needed from the jug.

BRITA Elemaris Meter XL White Water Filter JugI bought the 3 litre version as the Chlorine taste in our mains water ruined the taste of tea since being fed from a different pumping station. I had read other comments about this item, but until you actually use the product, it is difficult to put them in context. The first day was fine, the Chlorine taste was completely removed, but I had been careful as to how much mains water I put into the jug until I got used to it. On the 2nd day, I decided to fill the jug as recommended in the instructions, the flap in the lid will close when the maximum amount of water has been put into the jug. However, I soon discovered that previous user warnings not to fill to the maximum should be heeded. What actually happens is that water will flow slowly through the filter, but when the pressure equals the downward pressure of water still above the filter becomes equalised, no more water will flow through the filter into the treated water below. As soon as you tilt the jug to say fill the kettle, this chlorinated water above the filter element seeps out of the side of the lid, and some obviously splashes into the kettle. In other words, you have completed ruined all the work in the filtering process, and your tea will have a Chlorine taint again! The trick is to put just enough water in the jug so that most of it passes through the filter into the "pure" chamber below, and you will not have any seeps from the side of the lid when tilting! It is a very good product, it also has a side effect of exercising an arm still recovering from a previous fracture, as the 3 litre version is quite heavy to hold still when filling!

As a previous reviewer pointed out this jug does have some serious flaws.First of all the jug is of a good size to fit into the fridge. I prefer however to fill up an empty fizzy drinks bottle so the jug can be re-used again and again. The water does filter through fairly fast but as a previous reviewer mentioned it does tend to leak out of the handle which can create a mess. Once filled it will give about 1 litre of water. If you try refilling it while there is still water in it you will 1. Waste your time as the water wont be able to filter through and 2. End up like the other reviewer with water going everywhere when you try and pour.Fit it up to just below capacity and pour it out into another bottle which you can keep in the fridge that way you can fill the kettle, use it for cooking and still have clean water cold and in the fridge. Its fairly easy to assemble though I wouldn't give any gold stars for the quality of the product. Plastic that can leak if overfilled so almost every time you end up with some water on the sideboard. The indicator doesn't seem to do an awful lot other than tell me the obvious but for the price and for the sake of clean water I do think this is worth the money and worth 4 stars. One thing I would say is take a look at the price of the filters. You get one with the jug but they are coming in at 15 pounds for 3 which if they are lasting for only 1 month as another reviewer said you have to question how much cheaper than bottled water it really is especially if you are someone who is only buying this for drinking water.

Ordered and delivered faster than expected time. Thank you Amazon!!I bought this filter jug while it was on sale hoping to save on money spent on mineral water and time (and pain) purchasing it every now and then. Let's be honest - you can't beat a descent mineral water by filtering tap water, BUT it's not a practical or cost effective thing for day to day.I've tested the water filtered on separate glasses to check if I got my money's worth and I can wholeheartedly say that this filter real does a good job filtering it and giving it a very neutral and a bit sweeter taste. The only draw back I found is that the kettle seems to gather kind-of-dirt-spots on the outside, giving it a cheaper and dirtier look. This doesn't affect the quality of water, it just means it needs regular cleaning after each fill. Hence the 4 stars.I must say I have not used any other water filters so I've got nothing to compare against.HTH===================UPDATE: 15 SEP 2011After using this product for nearly a year, I would like to update this review.Cosmetically, the product became very stain and very very hard to clean. Makes it disgusting to drink water from. It continues to filter water, but adds a strange taste to it, in some cases making it worse than straight tap water. I bought 2 of these before and I wish I didn't. If you are looking at this product, I suggest you consider something else, or buy bottled mineral water. It may be expensive and pain to get in with shopping, but when you consider that 70% of your body is made of water, it's well worth it.

We had a Brita jug years ago but never used it and gave it away. When we moved to Kent we were immediately struck by the strong chemical taste and smell of chlorine in the tap water so decided to buy a new jug. We opted for the Elemaris as it has an electronic guide that tells you when you should change the filter. How accurate this is I don't know but the alternative jugs simply had a dial where you put the date that you changed the filter. Theoretically the electronic filter takes into account the amount of contaminants in the water (including how soft/hard it is), the number of times it's been used and how long it's been in... all I know it it tells me to change the filter pretty much every 4 weeks. This is the 'large'jug. I tend to drink water by the pint and drink lots of tea and coffee so it get gets filled up once or twice a day. If you have a big family I would consider looking at the XXL one that comes with a tap but I have no idea how easy that would be to fill. The jug fits into the door pocket on our fridge but it's a bit of a squeeze so check the dimensions out first! As the top 'pre-filtered' area does not always empty if the lower area if full you have to be reasonably careful when pouring to ensure you don't get the unfiltered water but it's no big issue as it pours at a pretty shallow angle when full. The filler lid is supposed to close automatically when full - it does... but only when the tap isn't running too fast as it basically floats shut as the reservoir fills and if the taps too fast gets pushed open.
