After years of putting up with foul tasting water, kettles that didn't last for more than a year and tea / coffee with a scummy residue on top I decided it was time to purchase a water filter. This Brita Marella filter is easy to assemble straight out of the box. It has three main parts plus one filter cartridge. The cartridge needs to be submerged under water until there are no more air bubbles and then placed into the internal jug. This jug fits inside the main container where the water is filtered and stored. The lid fits snugly on top of the main container.Once the lid has been attached there is no need to remove it except for washing the jug or changing the filter. It fits snugly, perhaps a little too snugly as I have scratched my fingers a couple of times when trying to remove it. The lid feels flimsy, I'm not convinced it would stand up to a lot of wear and tear.A sensor is fitted into the lid. To activate it for the first time you need to remove the plastic and then hold the start button down for around 6-10 seconds until all four bars appear. The sensor doesn't measure actual usage, instead it seems to be time based knocking off one bar per week until all four bars have disappeared. The filter says that it lasts for 100 uses so it all depends on how heavy a user you are of the jug and cartridge. However, it does act as a handy reminder because I have never remembered to keep count of how many times I've used the jug.The jug is easy to clean in hot soapy water - it will go into the dishwasher but I've so far only washed mine by hand. There is a section underneath the lid and also under the base of the jug into which water gets trapped and it is difficult to get it out and dry the jug completely. I've ended up shaking mine a lot to get the last drips of water out.Overall, it has made a huge difference to the taste of my water and the look of my tea and coffee - I no longer had a scummy residue on the top of them. So as a result I'm very happy with my purchase.

After looking at a cup of tea I'd made which had a slight film on the top, I decided that I'd had enough of drinking and making tea & coffee with hard water and looked to amazon for a reasonably priced water filter. After looking at a few products, I decided that this was the size I wanted and, more importantly, the amount of money I wanted to spend.A day later, my Brita Marella Cool White Water Filter Jug was in my hands. After a quick and easy assembly of all the parts (and a quick wash, naturally) it was ready to use and looking very smart. I took a glass of water from it and I was immediately impressed by just how clean tasting the water was - it was difficult to believe that the water Iwas drinking had come from my South London tap.It also passed the tea and coffee test with flying colours. The taste of my freshly brewed coffee really comes through when it isn't fighting the impurities of hard water. For the very reasonable price of this water filter, the improvement in the quality of your water - and subsequently your life - is very noticable. For those thinking of getting a water filter and worried about the running costs, it apparently gets through one cartridge a month on average and I bought myself a pack of three cartridges to go with this from amazon for just over the £10 mark. They are also available at all leading supermarkets, so you don't have to go hunting around specialist stores to keep your water filter going. If you have noticably impure water, I would strongly recommend you invest in one of these handy little jugs. It fits right on my fridge door and, to be honest, I don't know why I waited this long to get one. Go on, treat yourself, you deserve great, clean tasting water.

We've been using Brita filters for over 5 years and this is our second jug. The other one was still in good working order after 3 years, but we couldn't clean the water marks and limescale of it. The jug comes complete with one filter and last about a month of daily use. This jug has a capacity of 2.4 liters , but don't expect to get all this amount right away when you fill it from the tap. An empty jug will take a minute or two to get filled with filtered water. Most of the water will be filtered, about 1.4 liter, and the rest will take another couple of minutes to get filtered. The reason is that the jug has an inner container with 1 liter capacity where the filter is located. When you fill the jug with water, the inner container will be filled first, filtered and the out to the outer container. Any extra water filled, while the outer container is full, will stay on the inner one. Only when you pour the water from the jug, the outer container will get empty first and only then the water in the inner container will filtered out to the outer one. Hopefully it makes sense!Replacing the filters is easy and no mess involved. I always buy them in packs of four at Amazon. Water will taste funny though for the first days. In general, the taste is better than tap water but not as good as mineral water. The chlorine taste tap water is almost gone in Water from Brita filters but you'll have to get used to the taste. Coffee/tea tastes better (also clearer). I use it for cooking as well and it makes a difference. It is an easy and inexpensive solution to get filtered water, I'd recommend it.

We are lucky enough to live in a soft water, low limescale area, so never really thought about the need to filter our tapwater. However, a couple of days of "fizzy water" out of the tap (probably no more than low pressure, but looked and smelled, well, odd) and I thought I'd give the Brita filter a go. The difference is amazing, particularly in terms of smell - there simply isn't one. The Wife and I tried a blind test of taste, smell and appearance (I worked in the wine trade for many years, and have my Diploma in wine; The Wife organises wine tastings and is also Diploma level, so we both have pretty good palettes). Both (identical) glasses of water were filled to the same level, left on the side for the same amount of time, and we each tested each other. The Brita water is crystal clear, and tastes and smells of absolutely nothing - our tapwater by comparison had a distinct chemical smell, a slightly chalky but not unpleasant taste, and had particles in the water. When making our pot of rooibos later that night, the difference was again remarkable - the reddish tea is clear, and tastes so much cleaner and fresher. The jug is really well-designed - it is slim enough to fit in a fridge door, but holds a surprisingly large amount of water. It flows through the filter quickly too, and is easy to fill with the little flip up insert on the lid, so you don't need to remove the whole lid. The cartridges are easy to fit, remove and replace, and the count-down display on top is a great way to remember to change the inexpensive Maxtra cartridges.

This is the narrower style jug primarily designed for fridge doors. If you do not want to put it in the fridge, you might as well get the higher capacity version.I bought this jug as a replacement for the supposedly more 'advanced' brita jug with the new meter with a 'flow' indicator. The other jug design with a flap that is pushed down when you fill it with water and closes itself when it is full is nowhere near as good a design as this simpler jug. The other design causes the top of the jug to get covered with limescale water drop marks which are extremely hard to remove and the float/lid gets heavily scaled. I comparison, this manual flap is more effective and with careful use means that no water marks end up on the top of the jug.the flap also clicks into the upright position which would be quite handy for people with lower hand strength as it allows you to keep your thumb around the handle whilst lifting the jug.The 'simpler' meter on this jug does all you need it to do which is to simply remind you after four weeks to change the filter. The meter with the flow indicator on the more recent jugs seems to do nothing other than try to get you to replace the filter ore often, and stop working twice in two months in the case of the one I bought previously. The design of this jug also enables you to pour out filtered water whilst retaining any unfiltered water. This wasn't the case with earlier jug designs and is a very useful feature. In summary, in my opinion, if you want a Brita water filter jug, get this one.

For £10.34, replacing my five year old leaky jug was wallet friendly. When this was bought the white one was selling for £7 more. These use the new style filters, and though the indicator is time based, resetting it to 100% when it indicates 50% usage extends the filter change indicator for a further two weeks making for a more realistic six week change over schedule. The most noticeable in-use difference between this and my old style filter is the absence of leakage from the upper resevoir when pouring water from the filtered chamber. The tightly fitted lid obviates the need to hold on to the top while pouring, when, as is often the case, the prefiltered reservoir is half full. The filters can be pricey, but this came with one filter and I bought a further twelve for £28.83 on Amazon, working out at £2.40 per filter. Because of thier high cost, buying the filters in bulk is a must. Deals on these appear sporadically all over the place. [...] is worth checking. For instance, today (19/10/2012) they've found a 12 for £27.96 deal at Waitrose. No change in taste has been noticed by anyone in this household, but our normal supply is unobjectionable. Reducing the need to descale the coffee machine and kettle are the only reasons we have a Brita filter and this does seem to be doing its job.Last and least, the slimline look is an improvement and will probably allow the jug to fit into most fridge doors.

When we first bought a brita filter jug I noticed that my kettle wasn't so furred up but I couldn't really taste the difference, as our water doesn't taste that bad. However after I had been using it for a few months I could really tell the difference between the filtered water and tap water. The jug is made of plastic and takes maxtra filters rather than the classic ones. It fits in the fridge door which means you don't take up valuable shelf space. It is dishwasher proof except for the timer (a little liquid crystal display which lets you know when the filter's 4 weeks are up). When I just washed the jug by hand I found that all the little ridges eg around the rim of the lid were hard to clean properly and ended up with gunk in them.I now stick the whole lot in the dishwasher (with the exception of the display) and it's always lovely and clean now. The flaps covering the spout and filling opening easily come off for cleaning and go in the cutlery rack at the top of my dishwasher, the display can be removed by carefully prising it out with something like a small flat headed screwdriver (the eye remover on my potato peeler works well for me) so the rest of the lid can also go in. Once the lid is clean just push the display back into position and it clicks into place. My main gripe is that the filters seem to have got a lot more expensive recently, but it's still cheaper than bottled.

I live on my own and so didn't want, or need a big jug - basically one that would stop my kettle furring up so quickly (hard water area) plus one that could be chilled by putting it inside the fridge door.I got mine from the local Sainsburys, where it was on offer and where the bulky box didn't require hefty postage costs that buying online would incur.I like the fresh blue colour and a full jug is about 3/4 of a kettle-full, which is plenty, as I try not not boil too full a kettle as it takes longer and uses extra electricity. The water filters through visibly quite fast - about four or five minutes. I found pouring from it slow, but then found that the tip of the spout can be flipped up,speeding the flow. The quality of the plastic is good, meaning I can fill it from the sink without worrying too much about knocking it and causing it damage. The jug sits on the kitchen window sill, next to the kettle and I will be needing to replace the original cartridge, as I've had it a while. I may get those online. It does feature Brita's LCD guide that shows when cartridge replacement is due, but this being my first one, I didn't activate it when I should have done, as I didn't realise how it worked. If you're after a space-saving jug, perhaps on your own and want to chill the water in the fridge, to drink on its own or for squash, then this Brita fits the bill perfectly.

Our domestic water in SE England is extracted from aquifers fed by limestone and chalk-lined underground strata deposits - it's very hard. We also suffer from an unusually high number of broken mains pipes which seem to attract a shovel full of soil, sand, clay and other impurities every time they are repaired. And let's not forget the fluoride and other nasty flavours mixed in by Affinity (our water utility supplier) - all of which leads to extremely unpalatable tap water to drink! Entrance the Brita Marella Water Filter! This handy jug with its Maxtra push-fit replaceable filter sits at the side of the sink holding up to 2 litres of beautifully filtered water (and a further 1.5 lires of tap water on standby). The filtered water tastes fresh and impurity-free and is perfect for hot or cold drinks, and all cookery or medicinal purposes. The only reason for marking it down by one star is that 3.5 litres of water is bloody heavy - but that's my fault for using the total capacity. Since getting a Brita Water filtering jug (this is our third) my wife's cystitis has virtually disappeared and I no longer suffer bouts of urethritis - a further benefit is that the kettle only needs descaling every six months instead of monthly as before. Go get one - but maybe a smaller model - you'll love it if you also have hard water.

I've heard about those water filter jugs from many sources. I purchased this one when I saw it was discounted I thought that now it's a good time to get one and try it.The assembling was a bit difficult. The filter didn't stay at its place at the begining may be because it wasn't activated yet. The instructions say that first two fills have to be thrown away because the filter is not activated yet. After I followed the instructions the filter started working and it doesn't popup now when I fill it with water. In the instructions they say when you press the filter into its place you will feel it clicking. I didn't feel that so I couldn't determine if it is well placed. However now I've filled it up few times and it seems like all is fine now.The filtered water is crystal clear and it tastes different than mineral water. At first I didn't like the taste. My boyfriend doesn't even want to drink it. It's weird but you can get used to it. I started using it now and I think I'm begining to like it. The produced clean water is about 2 liters and it is enough for drinking and cooking plus you can refill it everytime you pour out some of it.I'm happy I bought the Brita Water Filter. Having clean drinking water no matter if you have a bottle of mineral water or not is really a good thing.

This jug is amazing, where i live the water is hard and you can taste it. So it can be difficult to have water for a healthier option on a diet, so since i got this (10/06/15) and since i loved it, the taste of water is pure and delicious, especially if it's cooled.Pros:Water taste is improved massivelyIt's easy to useThe materials are recyclableThe filter is easy to install and removeEasy to fill with waterHas a built in counter to remind you to replace filter after 4 weeksA coupon comes with product to buy more filters for a discountCons:If you fill the water above the filter, the taste can be metallic - This means you can't hold a lot of water (1 large cup,(500ml))The jug is too wide to hold in my fridge door shelf (may vary)The handle is a bit small for larger handsFilter estimation life time isn't that long (4 weeks)So if your water tastes of chlorine or limescale and other strange tastes which the company (Scottish Water for me) can have, then this will solve this. I can now drink water while on my diet, avoiding juice meaning less sugar. But because of the cons i cannot give it a full 5 stars, if the jug had more space for water under the filter then it would of been a 5

I bought this to replace an Aluna XL, which was becoming increasingly frustrating with constantly having to remove/re-align the lid to fill it. The Marella has a thumb operated flap, which enables easy filling without having to remove the lid. The capacity is listed the same for both jugs, but the Marella appears to hold more filtered water. (Perhaps because it's easier to fill?)I noticed a few comments about leaking handles. I'd like point out that there's a line on the side of the handle, so as long as you don't fill above that it's not possible for water to enter it or leak. It's also the XL model, so if you want it to fit in the fridge or have mobility issues you should consider the smaller size.As far as filtering water,it does that as well as all Brita jugs do. It removes the awful limescale taste, and greatly reduces the need for descaling. The only reason I give it four stars is due to the monitor on the lid. As with most jugs this is basically a timer, and will count down even if you don't use it, so it's largely redundant and consequently I rely on taste to gauge when the filter needs changing.

The new style XL Brita is undoubtedly lighter, and seemingly not for the better either. That's because it seems more fragile and breakable than my older sturdier model that I have just chucked out purely on the grounds that it was black and caked in unsightly white limescale and was an eyesore in my newly decorated kitchen. Nevertheless, after two weeks of use this new model hasn't failed me yet. This lightweight jug concept now means that I can fill the jug up to capacity and not feel as though I will drop the darned thing or just spill the water over the floor getting it back to the worktop. The push thumb lid opening, which seems inconvenient at first when the older models relied on water pressure from the tap opening the opening on older models - and needed no thumb - is also much better too because it means that you can open it up manually and keep it open and then properly aim the tap water directly into the clear plastic jug without water spilling all over the lid. The bobbly shaped opening doesn't drop through into the water either, like it did with my old one. The box comes with a Maxima Filter

The water comes through much faster than with the old 'standard' circular style of filter. The usage indicator is a timer rather than a counter of number of fills as on some other jugs. When initialised it shows bars and the number of bars changes by one each week to show when the filter needs changing (after a month)The water tastes different from the older filters. It's difficult to describe but I think the water tastes less of dissolved solids but more astringent than with older types of filters - the older filters seem to have a more rounded flavour. The water from both types tastes better than tap water but I would not say that one tastes better than the other. When the water is left to stand overnight the taste seems to change, particularly when the filter is new. Water seems to need to be passed through several times before the taste stabilises. Before investing in many spare filters, I would recommend trying both this jug with the new type of filter and an older jug with the older style of filter to see which taste you prefer - it may depend on the type of mains water being filtered.
