Its winter and I have just used this item from new to trim part of a mixed, mature hedge at a county cottage; an assortment of bramble, rose, hawthorn, privett and not sure what else. Suffice to say that the majority of the hedge was wood as there is little green at this time of year and so the stalks were thick and dry - a challenge for any trimmer. Well the blades are new and sharp, but I was surprised how well it cut the hedge back and will easily cope with keeping the greenery at bay come spring and through the summer. Charging took about an hour and I found that there was still sufficient charge left after an hour's work - which is generally enough for me in one go when I use our petrol trimmer, before I take a break - the difference with this product is weight. No it isn't light, but for anyone who routinely uses a petrol trimmer, including the Stihl, this type of product is a Godsend; it isn't as robust as a Stihl, nor does it cut quite as well, but it is significantly lighter and therefore ideal for for those whose needs are not for a workhorse, their hedge is not took long or they are older. I consider myself quite fit for my age, but with 400 yards or hedge overall, some of which is over 2 metres tall, I take more than one go to trim the hedges and so charging it, working with it for an hour or more, re-charging and doing something else before a further cut is probably sufficient for me in one go.In addition, I like a couple of other things, firstly the 55cm blade length seems to be the optimal length for me and this whole unit, allowing it to balance well and in a way which belies the 3.8kg weight, similarly, after only using it once, but having access to other tools with a 36v battery, they are so much more durable and longer lasting than the 18v version. I found that there is not quite as much "torque" as with a petrol model when cutting thicker branches, but it is significant none the less and appears to be as robust as my friend's Bosch trimmer. Finally and this may be an irritant to some, I liked the fact that it requires the user to operate it with two hands as a safety feature - yes it is great to reach forward with one hand to get the top of a hedge, that final 6 inches or so, but take it from someone who fell in 2016 whilst doing the same, a couple of broken ribs and a wrist render a steady surface and where necessary a pole trimmer a more suitable option and certainly less painful.

Are you sitting there wondering if a cordless battery trimmer will work "ok" then stop sitting there and buy this strimmer. It is an incredible piece of kit. We have an acre of ground with hawthorn and other assorted random hedges. It is always one of the big jobs to do. My mum is 75 and this is far too difficult for her we thought to do now, at her age. We bought if for her to do some of the shrubs. How wrong were we. From a job she admitted she found she was really struggling with this trimmer has transformed her and the hedges. So no, she can't start the petrol one anymore but this has enabled her to do what she did before and with pleasure. She insisted I write a review saying "if my 75 year old mum can do it,so can you. She says she finds it well balanced so doesn't feel tired using it and it goes through at least 20mm thick branches with ease. Unlike a petrol she prefers it because you can do a bit, stop without having to put a petrol one down or move with the blades moving and start again with a real feeling of safety whilst doing so. On one charge I used it pretty much all afternoon and it hadn't run out of juice. I did put it on for 5 minutes whilst I had a cuppa. It will definately keep going longer than you will. Mum said in performance it is every bit as good as a petrol one but beats a petrol hands down in terms of ongoing cost ... no petrol to buy. Convenience ... ready to go without a trip to petrol station and if you do decide to stay out all day, put it on charge whilst you have a cuppa and it is ready to go again. Safety ... you let go of the handle it stops quickly and starts again just as quick when you want it, I think the lightness and good balance helps with this too as you feel in control even when stretching with it rather than the heavier petrol one. It is a no brainer, this piece of kit is well worth the money. I am not trying to keep mum working to make it easier on me, but easier on her both physically and psychologically. She wants to be independent and with this, she can keep going as she did before without feeling it is something she is too old for. Psychologically that is a big deal. She has found a different way of looking after her garden and it is a better way. Disclaimer ... this does not mean you have to sent your 75 year old mum out to cut your hedges because it will make her feel good like it did my mum. Your mum might prefer flowers or a day out instead ;)

I decided to purchase this after being very satisfied with the performance of my GLC3630L20-GB strimmer. Much like the strimmer the GTC36552PC-GB was quick to assemble, you just need to screw on the black plastic guard and you're good to go. The battery is a different model number to the one on my strimmer, but they're interchangeable so no problem there (both 36v 2.0Ah). The only real difference between the two batteries is that the one that came with the hedge trimmer has 3 indicator LEDs for showing the charge level as opposed to the 4 on the battery that came with the strimmer. The battery itself is quick to charge at around an hour or so.B&D moved the battery on this model so that it's attached straight to the end of the trimmer rather than at an angle as on the older model, i think this was a good move as in my opinion it should make the trimmer better balanced while in use. I certainly found it extremely easy to use, especially at full stretch where a petrol trimmer very quickly tires your arms out due to it's weight, the GTC36552PC-GB did not. In use the GTC36552PC-GB is also very quiet, i was actually concerned that it sounded under powered when i first turned it on. Such concerns were quickly dispelled when it cut effortlessly through my hedge without missing a beat, it even cut through some thicker branches then i expected it would cope with. First indications are that the battery life seems very good, in fact i could probably have just bought the bare tool and reused the battery from my strimmer, but it never hurts to have a spare battery.

I needed an electric headge trimmer to replace my petrol one. The petrol was just so heavy even with the strap and the engine was forever cutting out and it was a faf starting it, I thought perhaps a cordless one would fit the bill.I chose the B&D because it was 36V which I hoped would mean it would have a bit more oomph about it and it would last longer. Also the reviews were mostly great. It is surprisingly light, but I'm quite strong, my wife says she was quite achy from holding it above her head (our hedge is a big (8-10ft tall before we cut it) native, mixed variety -Hawthorn, beech, roses etc). The battery charges very quickly and lasts a long time. When I first turned it on it sounded quite quiet and I did think it sounded a bit weak and puny and would it get through our hedge? It has had no problems at all, it hasn't even got stuck so I havent tried the special button for disengaging the blades when they get stuck. Some people have made comments about the 3 switches you have to engage to get it working, for normal use that wont bother you but if you want to stretch and use the cutter with one hand, you cannot! So it is a bit annoying but I guess its safer!Personally I could have done with a longer blade - 55cm is okay for a privet but my big hedge is very wide so I need to attack the top from both sides. Also the blade is quite flimsy (B&D would say its very light), so you have to be careful that you're not too rough with it or you could bend it. For that reason I wouldn't recommend it for professional use.

Black & Decker say that the hedge trimmer is suitable for trimming hedges, shrubs and brambles with a maximum stem thickness of 19mm. It comes with a battery and a charger that fully charges the battery in an hour. There is a switch to free the blade if it becomes jammed. A manufacturer’s two year guarantee applies.I have used Stihl 4-MIX petrol equipment and a Black & Decker mains hedge trimmer so I was a bit doubtful that this battery operated trimmer would be up to the job. The Stihl battery hedge trimmers have a blade speed of 3000 strokes/minute whereas this Black & Decker operates at 1300 strokes/minute. However, it dealt quite easily and reasonably quietly with a mixture of bramble and snowberry. It jammed once but the button to free it didn’t free it. Battery life is very good. It was easy to handle except overhead where it could tire the wrist of the hand holding the trigger. To be fair, working overhead would have been better with a pole cutter. I agree with another reviewer that the blade sheath needs to be more robust.I changed to a battery operated hedge trimmer as a stroke in July 2016 meant that I’m blind on the right hand side, and afterwards I cut through the cord of a mains hedge trimmer. It’s so much easier not having to monitor the cable. As I bought this hedge trimmer through Amazon Warehouse it was significantly cheaper than the Stihl trimmer plus battery and charger I had considered.

After assembly and charging the battery the motor would only run intermittantly with no load. The trimmer was returned and a replacement ordered. The switch seems to be unnecessarily complicated to operate. Press lever A and hold while pressing button B, then pull the handle switch to start the motor. I know safety is important but this level of interlock is ridiculous. I will review further when the replacement trimmer arrives! The second trimmer has now arrived and initially appeared to work without problems. However after a period of use it also started to exhibit the previously mentioned intermittant motor drive. It would appear that if the operating buttons are not operated in a very specific manner and sequence the motor goes into this intermittant mode.I was not sure whether this is intentional or a fault. The manufacturers operating manual is little more than a joke with simplified diagrams and no accompanying text. When the unit works it does the job very well and operating time meets my expectations. After further experimentation it appears that the intermittant drive symptom is actually a feature of the trimmer to cope with extra hard stems. The button on the top of the trimmer should not be pressed in normal usage. My star rating has been amended to reflect that this is a very capable trimmer but one star deducted for the messy button operation and poor instructions.

I bought this unit because a) it had good reviews b) I have the Strimmer of the same series so uses the same battery. So far very pleased with the unit. It has a good reach although can't be used one handed as there are 2 safety/operating switches that have to be held down together. Obviously it is safer to be using it 2 handed but that does mean one can't reach out as far. The unit cuts through remarkably large stems. Up to 10mm is easy for it. I have not yet needed to use the anti-Jam function.I expected the battery to last well due to previous use of the strimmer with the same battery and I was not disappointed. I was able to trim over 100ft of 8' hedge side and top and there was still 1 light out of 3 on.Recharging don't take long. Even 10 minutes will get you going again for another round of trimming. Full recharge from near flat is < an hourThe most important thing to remember with rechargeable batteries is a) don't leave the battery in the unit b) after use then recharge the battery fully and then take it off the charger. That way the battery should last for several years.

I have a Black and Decker 36V chain saw which I love - it has power and endurance beyond my wildest expectations for a battery chain-saw. So I thought I'd try the hedge-trimmer, and get the benefit of being able to share batteries and charger. Once again I am amazed by the power and running time. Like some other reviewers I have never had the need to use the anti-jam facility because it just cuts through anything that can fit in the cutting slots (20mm diameter or less), It even cuts bigger stuff if you persist, taking it in bit by bit as it cuts. Ignore other's comments about the interlocks - you need them on something this dangerous, and they are no problem in use.If you really wanted to you could easily wrap tape round the trigger interlock, or front interlock to keep it on, but you'd be crazy to do it! Reaching up high with single-handed operation is definitely unwise and against health and safety - stand on a bench of some sort instead and always use it two-handed.!

Having been impressed with the 36v B&D strimmer we subsequently purchased this Hedge trimmer. These inter-changeable battery tools are primarily for my wife to use as petrol versions are too heavy and cumbersome for her.I have used many powered garden tools over the years and you do learn to buy tools that suit the job in hand. This trimmer is used for light hedge and shrub work. I gave it a good workout on arrival and cut a large beech hedge, a privet hedge, cotoneaster, and various small shrubs. I was very impressed with the standard of cut, ease and comfort of use, and the life of the battery. It is quieter and cleaner than petrol units.I would continue to use my petrol trimmer for more heavy duty jobs such as laurel hedging.Overall very pleased with this product, good value for money, very effective and easy to use. A good back up/alternative if you have a heavy petrol trimmer that can be overkill and hard work for smaller jobs.

I bought this trimmer to replace an old Bosch that had its time. I already had the 36V matching version of the impressive Cordless strimmer, which more powerful than a corded one I had, so I already expected it would not only have good power output but great battery life. And it does. There's plenty of power and surprising long battery life. The 36v version is weighty, without being heavy most of the time, though you do feel it if you are having to stretch out to get to the high or more difficult to reach areas. The three button arrangement where you square two handles and then hold down a thumb button I assume is safety feature (given how powerful and sharp it is) , didn't cause me any issues once I was used to it.So apart from the bright orange colour, this is a superb battery strimmer and no way would I used a corded one again.

Another excellent B&D product. Three things made this a great purchase.1. It's gone through all my overgrown hedges in no time.2. I got it on an excellent price reduction.3. The battery is compatible with my B&D cordless lawnmower and cordless strimmer as well. It's not as fast or as powerful as I thought it might be, but that hasn't stopped it from cutting through all but the thickest of thickets in my garden. So mission accomplished. It's surprisingly quiet in operation and the battery lasts for an age. The freedom and safety in not having to traipse an electrical cord around with this sort of thing is huge. It's also a great benefit to use the battery as an extra, for the lawnmower and strimmer,so whatever I'm doing I've always got plenty of juice fully charged. Very pleased.

This Hedge Trimmer is Very Powerful and the Battery lasts well over an Hour. I cut 2 hedges one a privet hedge approx 10 mtrs long and 1.5 mtrs high and there was still plenty of charge left. The anti Jam tech works a treat . The machine with battery is quite heavy but its powerful, so well made.the battery has a led charge left lights at the press of a button. This trimmer is quite longer than most corded trimmers so will cut more. My honest view is you really can't go wrong with this trimmer

20.3.2020

The trimmer is nicely balanced requiring little effort to cut through foliage, minimum assembly means it's nearly ready to use out of the box, there's just a hand guard to attach and the battery to charge which took a little over an hour for the first time. It held ample charge to trim a very large bush with power to spare, making a really neat job of it, the anti trap function seems to work well and the fact that there's no cable to worry about makes doing the job that much easier.

It's rare that stuff works so well - this is excellent. It cuts well, it's easy to handle, you can cut dense hedges and it lasts well too. I cut for over an hour on a charge. In that time I cut about 500 plus feet of hedge, trimmed box hedge, and because it's so light cut back plants down to ground level, in broad horizontal sweeps. Really easy to use - it can jam if you get a branch that's close to the blade width but only rarely and easy to un jam.

26.8.2016

I bought this to replace my ageing 10 year old trimmer and it's like night and day. It's lighter (battery tech has moved on a long way), far more powerful (ditto) and has a longer reach which is handy. It made very light work of 40 odd feet of privet hedges so I then decided to tackle a mature and very thick pyrocantha. My previous one could barely cope with the thick, woody stems but this one chomped through them happily.Very happy with it.
