I received mine direct from Ryobi UK in Marlow as a warranty replacement, and contrary to other reviews here they couldn't have been easier to contact or deal with. After one conversation they agreed to replace my RPT4045 and I was pleased to receive the updated RPT4545 model.I would say with this model they have gone some way to address previous issues with packing and assembly. The previous box was almost impossible to unpack as the internal packaging was so tight. Unfortunately they've now adopted a top opening box which had almost disintegrated on delivery with little internal protection. However they've been more successful with the assembly aspect and have changed the design totally, doing away with the internal wire and elliptical pole which was almost impossible to push together in favour of pins and sockets which are fairly easy to snap into place. There is now an extension pole rather than an extending one and the reach appears to have increased too. They have also added a harness to improve stability and the head is now slightly smaller making it less unwieldy. In use I found it had slightly more power and appears to cut through slightly thicker hedge than the old model. There is also additional articulation so it's now possible to do sides of the hedge with the harness rather than just the top or higher branches.Overall I would say it's a big improvement and I just hope that it proves more durable than the old one.

This tool has done a job for us after the typical story of cutting thru the cable of the previous one.As others have said, it is heavy. I didn't get on with the shoulder strap I am a 6ft1" triathlete and I struggled after 20-30 minutes fighting a 9-10ft hedge about 1m wide which we adopted when we moved. I needed an assistant to keep things like the cable in check. The 90deg flat cut function is useful, but over a certain height or at a particular level of thickness, becomes unworkable. I found I had to have the assistant help me climb ladders, but the cutter in the long telescopic single pole formation, then sweep the hedge from the top, that worked reasonably well. In the end,we took about 2ft height off of about a 4m long hedge, but it was an epic battle. This also fixed the problem of reach, because the hedge was too deep to cut the whole width from front and back. There will be more coming off in the spring. I suspect when we get the hedge under control, this might be a much more agreeable regular task with this toolI think if i was doing this again i might invest in hiring a chainsaw to hack thru it OR doing some thinning out of some branches first. If you or someone else has left the hedge untackled for some time, so the bark is thicker and tangled, you are going to struggle with any consumer device of this sort. But since I'm an obstinate b*gger I'll be continuing with this.

I bought a discounted version of the ryoby hedge trimmer - which I suspect was a return - at a decent discount. When it arrived I guess the reason for the original return became apparent. It had been fitted with a continental plug.I chatted to support and explained this is in contravention of UK sales laws on electrical goods. I was offered a full refund partial refund to buy an adapter or a full refund if preferred. I pointed out that for any adapter to be UK legal would have to be a fixed (screw-in) model and that the hassle of returning this item in a damaged box was a bit much given the fact it was not legal to start with. After conferring with superior it was decided I would get a full refund AND could dispose of the item myself or send it back.My local electrician has since refitted the item with a UK plug. :)Hedge trimmers work a treat but are still heavy at over 4 kilos and not for the weak muscled.

It's a superb trimmer and cuts and trims well, no complaints there. However, I was a little bit disappointed when I realised it could not be shortened to the similar length of a hand held trimmer. I guess I didn't view the product carefully enough but at its shortest its still fairly long reach trimmer and heavy. Then add the additional pole for some brilliant long reach trimming but beware, if you have a bad back like I have this thing it ultra heavy. Yes it comes with a support sling for use at both lengths but you can't always keep the weight of the trimmer supported by the sling. Depending on what and where you are cutting there will be lots of times when you will have to support this beast with both arms!Boy it's heavy! After 20 minutes of cutting a 1 M high laurel hedge then a 2.5M high laurel hedge I'm tired!

This hedge trimmer is well constructed and cuts like a dream. The pole sections fit together easily and fast. The total cutting length of 4m is great apart from the weight of the motor section. I’m relatively strong but wow swinging this around for a few hours you will feel like you’ve completed a intensive gym session. So wouldn’t recommend for the week go for lighter version. The only criticism I have is the smallest length is 2m which I find difficult to use on some small hedges. You are standing 2m away so controlling is harder. Would be great if both pole sections could be removed for close up work. Overall good rating as the cutting power is far better than any battery operated system.Just remember book a massage for the day after you’re need it.

Appears to be very well made - looks tough enough for the job. The extension tube can be a little fiddly to fit but once connected is good and solid. I tried it out a few days after it arrived and it cut my beech hedge really well, slicing through 10mm branches with ease but struggling a bit with those approaching 20mm diameter (as you would expect). As others have said its pretty heavy, ok when the blade is vertical but starts to pull on your arm as you swing it around. But that's Physics for you! Its 2kg lighter than the 1000w Bosch model! Its much quicker than using a small trimmer off a ladder (and safer) which is why I bought it.Also saves money on going to the Gym by giving your arms and upper body a good workout so all in all a great buy!

This is a great product at a reasonable price. It looks good and is very easy to use. Please note though that it is very heavy when fully extended. I have a 3 metre tall hedge and need to stand on a tall ladder to trim the top. This kit did the job perfectly but it takes a bit of effort. To be fair, the hedge is a good 2 metres wide so I have to stretch and hold my arms in a way that means they are fully extended in front of me. After approx 20-25 minutes I had to take a rest. I am a muscular 6 foot 3 inches and 220 lbs and even I found it hard. However, if you don't have to use it fully extended (arms extended as well) then I am sure it would be okay.It really is a good and easy tool to use and I would definitely recommend it.

I did my research and read up on the 3 primary options available - corded, cordless and petrol. While cordless offers the obvious freedom of movement the battery life vs. charge time is way of out kilter for me - 30 mins use and then a 6 hour charge time - really? Petrol an option but just as heavy and as little noisy. So I chose corded and I've now used this 5/6 times and its just so far faultless - like a hot knife through butter, easily tidying laurel bushes and most smaller garden plants.Yes, the cutting head is a bit weighty but I expected this and with the body harness at least for me it isn't too heavy.Great that it has the extendable section and the rotating head to access those far awayor high points.Recommended

I bought this item as a replacement for another brand that I used for the past 4 years and was therefore used to handling both the length and weight balance of the product - I just work around the issues and manage it. I'm 66 years old and the item is no problem. This one cuts nicely (but then it is brand new) and the fact that you can operate with or without the middle extension bit is useful as I'm sure the other one I had with a push in/out telescopic extender contributed to its breaking down. Only issue I have with this one is there are only 6 metres of cable which as far as I'm concerned is not long enough for most of my jobs - you have to stop more often to shuffle the extension reelalong.

I have had chance to use the Ryobi hedge trimmer a number of times on my beech and Leylandi hedges. As other reviews have commented it is quite heavy particularly if you are using it for some time fully extended but it does allow you to trim the hedges without the the problem of batteries running out of power, and does give quite along reach for dealing with high hedges. The only problem I have experienced is that trimmer will deal with young growth but when I encountered thicker tougher branch which caused the blades to jam, the trimmer stopped and on investigation the fuse had blown in the plug, but after replacing the fuse the trimmer worked normally again.

Very impressed. Did a large garden of hefty hedges without missing a beat! But be aware the motor is at the head of this, rather than a shaft drive from the handle end, like petrol ones. This means it is a bit weighty when at full extension. I'm a 35yr old man with decent upper body strength, but I still needed to use the strap and anchor the handle end against my body to relieve strain when working for prolonged periods. But u expected this from seeing the design and reading other reviews.Really does chew through some seamingly impossible size branches though. If they fit between the jaws, it'll munch it with ease!

I read all the reviews for pole saws I could get my hands on and, at the end of the day, weight seems to be the key issue. I can confirm that all the reviews are correct - yes the product is a bit on the heavy side - yes it will cut it's was through some of the more substantial branches - yes after half an hour your arms a somewhat in need of a rest - BUT - in half an hour I had cut both sides and the top of all 30 metres of my 2.7m high hawthorn hedge - job done. The build quality is excellent and the interchangeability of the extension piece is properly engineered and simple to do.

This is needed for a very high hedge. Managed to trim the front and part way back from the ground, but had to use a ladder to get to the top back of the hedge, that's not the fault of the product it just my hedge is a little higher than the reach from standing on the ground, the weight is as promised but I did find it a bit cumbersome when fully extended. But and this is important, it is very powerful and went throu 20 MM. branches like butter on a nearby tree which I also trimmed with this. It was well packaged and quickly delivered.I like it ,it's a good buy.

Bought this item as I have a conventional electric Ryobi trimmer which has lasted years without a problem. I need it to trim 9 foot hedging and trees. It does the job well but when used at full extension it is quite heavy to use for more than 5-10 minutes at a time ( I would regard myself as a fit 60 year old). It certainly gives the upper body a good workout, but be careful. The harness that comes with it is useless, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. If it lasts half the time my other Ryobi trimmer has, I'll be even happier.

Specifically bought for trimming a tall hedge (im 6'3 and still needed a ladder and an extended trimmer) I read reviews before i bought, yes it's a little heavy but that doesn't bother me - exercise while gardening! It was easy to assemble. It's not the telescopic type, theres an additional extension part for as an when needed. Even without that, its quite long, so i would not recommend for general trimming. But it works well, seems robust and the pivot angle head is easy to adjust.
