In writing this review I found that I was coming back to the same word a lot. That word was ‘average’ - average length, average power, average blade gap, average cord length and so on. In the end that is not a bad thing, it just means that the Fly Easycut 520 is a polyvalent hedge trimmer that can probably cover most people’s needs.Taking it in hand is a similar experience, it is moulded plastic with a dual switches to activate and it just feels, well, average. Comfortable, easy to handle, sure, but also unremarkable. Some trimmers have blades that can be angled differently, adjustable handles, but none of that here. It kind of leaves me hunting for things to call out in a review. When buying a trimmer you need to consider the blade length, the teeth spacing, the power and the weight (plus a few other things that don’t apply in this price range).Basically, the larger the surface area of hedge you have to cut, the longer the blade you need (so you cover more area with each pass). A longer blade means slightly more weight and less manoeuvrability, so there’s no point getting one unless you have the hedges to justify it. The Flymo’s 50cm blade falls right in the middle of the range (average), so should fit normal sized gardens (unless you have a ten foot hedge all around). The teeth spacing depends on the types of hedges you have and how often you cut them. Wider spacing is needed to infrequently trimmed hedges (so the branches grow that much thicker) or coarser hedges. Usually, if you’re dealing with thicker branches, you’ll also need more power to make the cut. This trimmer has a fairly low power motor, so the teeth spacing is appropriate for an average garden.I say the motor is low power, but that is in comparison to the maximum you can get. It is, in fact, a little higher than similarly specced and priced competitors. However, you pay for that extra power in weight, where the Flymo is actually no flyweight, being heavier than similar offerings (a whole kilo heavier than the similarly specced Bosch AHS 50-16 - though the Bosch is down 50 watts and has a smaller teeth gap). The size of the teeth gap appears to have a pretty big impact on weight, so maybe that comparison is unfair, the almost identical Draper 77115 has about the same weight as the Flymo. The cable length is reasonable for a trimmer, but I find that I always need to use an extension lead for garden tools, so for me this is not a big deal unless it is stupidly short. This cable is average, so for me, at least, it is fine. That’s about it really. There’s nothing to rave about, but also nothing to complain about, aside from being a little on the heavy side. If I were to believe my key word for this review I’d give it 3 stars, but that would be unfair. 5 stars seems a bit much, so I’m settling for 4.

The headline product particulars on this page are incorrect at the time of writing this - the motor is 500W not 450W and the blade length is 50cm not 45cm. It appears those details have been confused with the Easicut 460 which is the model below the 520.This is an easy product to unpack and use plus the 10 metre cord is a good balance between being generous enough and not too susceptible to tangling. The unit weighs in at just over 3.2Kg and the looks and feels well made. Remember to use any device of this nature with a Residual Current Device (RCD), protective gloves/glasses - a sturdy blade guard is supplied. The Easicut handle is comfortable to hold and well balanced. The design of the handle allows you to operate and support the unit with one hand and guide/support it with the other - thanks to the design and fairly light weight precision in cutting is easy. The unit is safe too as it requires you to operate two switches to put it on (easier than it sounds) and, in the event of any problems, you can stop it instantly by releasing the stop button. Our hedge is quite mature and over 7ft with dense foliage. The Easicut 520 slices through the hedge and can cope with twigs up to 19mm in diameter. I found the 50cm long blade ideal and it's long enough to produce a really smooth cut and shape to a largish hedge. In use, there's a bit of noise from the motor, but it's not excessive and there's no kick or recoil when you start the unit.I can see why despite the existence of cordless trimmers a mains version is more attractive in some ways - you've got much better power, and of course, you're not restricted by battery life. The downside is you have a mains lead to manage and there's the risk of cutting through it, however, Flymo have given this some thought and the flex is encouraged to stay away from the blade by a cleverly designed hook and the position of the cord entry to the machine.I've owned a few hedge trimmers including a newish cordless one but I like this Flymo 520 because it's light, easy to hold and has a powerful cut and long blade which means a nice looking hedge plus, as far as possible, Flymo have tried to address one of my biggest concerns about mains powered garden machines and that's cable management. This is a very able domestic hedge trimmer.

I'm writing this review fresh from having used the Flymo EasiCut 460 Hedge Trimmer. This is an easy product to unpack and use plus the 10 metre cord is a good balance between it being generous enough and not being too susceptible to tangling. The unit weighs in at just over 3Kg and power is delivered to the 45cm blade via a 450W motor. Remember to use any device of this nature with a Residual Current Device (RCD), protective gloves/glasses - a blade guard is supplied. The first thing that strikes you when you pick this trimmer up is how comfortable the handle is and how well balanced it feels in the hand. The design of the handle allows you to operate and support the unit with one hand and guide/support it with the other - thanks to the design and light weight precision in cutting is easy. Got it free in exchange for an honest review so here goes:Slighter heavier with a shorter blade than my now defunct Hecht trimmer and also a shade more expensive. Having said that it comes with 10m of cable, as opposed to the Hecht with it's 6 inches and is still a fine , well designed, easy to use addition to my garden tools. It has the usual safety cut out features and the central handle makes for comfortable, safe use. My previous had a 62cms blade and this a 46cms . This is not a great disadvantage as it is definately more manoverable and better for any hedge shaping or work in a confined space. If however your hedge is more than say 50cms across and over 2.5meters in hight, then go for a longer blade. The 450W motor drives it through even the densest hedge effortlessly . This is important as for safety you do not want to be applying force. It also cuts I both directions making it easier to get a nice level finish. All in all a fine hedge trimmer from a manufacturer of durable, high quality tools

I have tended to go with Bosch for my electrical gardening needs, after a poor experience with a Flymo lawnmower some time ago. So my expectations were low for how this Flymo 520 hedge cutter would perform compared to my existing Bosch hedge cutter.I have been pleasantly surprised though! The Flymo:- cuts well through the two types of hedges I have, and cuts better through thicker branches than the Bosch- is ergonomically designed and relatively lightweight, so that it is comfortable to hold and use- has better cable management than the Bosch, helping to keep it out of the way and reducing the risk of cutting the cable- has good safety features - two handed operation required and a blade cover when not in useThe only downside is perhaps the cable, which like the Bosch, is not particularly tough and can get damaged easily e.g. if caught in a closing door.Overall though, a great hedge cutter that is as good as, maybe slightly better than, the Bosch equivalent.

What a great hedge trimmer this is … just the thing to keep the ivy that tumbles over our old garden walls in check. The Flymo Easicut 610XT is designed in the normal Flymo orange and grey colours … it is a 500W machine with an extra long reach making trimming the ivy on our eight foot stone walls a piece of cake. This hedge trimmer is corded so my husband had to remember to be careful not to cut the electric cord. The cord is 10m in length which together with a long extension lead plugged into the power in our shed managed to power the trimmer all around the stone walls of our 100ft x 40ft garden trimming the rampant ivy to a much more manageable size.It actually did a very good job too.The double handle gives a firm and comfortable hold, the machine is well balanced and the sharp double action cutting blades made short work of the thick ivy stems. All in all a brilliant hedge trimmer that I have no problem in recommending.

The Fly EasiCut 460 hedge trimmer is a study, resilient piece of engineering from Flymo, as you'd probably expect from the brand. I have to admit my experience with hedge trimmers is not huge, but I have a giant hedge outside the front of the house and decided to text this on it, to make it neat and did and shape it down to size. The EasiCut 460 is light and powerful, with a long cutting blade, which means you can hold it comfortably whilst attacking a fairly large surface area, giving a neat finish, and it has a 10m cable, meaning you have a lot of leeway with movement. If you're in the market for a powerful hedge trimmer at a reasonable price, this should definitely be your must-have purchase.

Absolutely no room for improvement. A fantastic budget hedge trimmer. Extraordinary cord length (far longer than my Flymo lawnmower), comes fully assembled and works like a charm.I enjoy the two trigger activation and feel it prevents accidents. The chopping ability seems pretty good and it gets through small branches etc. with ease. I've done quite a bit of graft with this now and have never had to clean anything from it or dislodge any smaller parts, nor has it even stopped working. Also, (don't try this at home) I've accidentally tried cutting rocks and metal poles that have fallen into my path - no damage to the blades or anything it just jumps away - seems quite well built.

Ive been th vuser of Flymo products since my teens when I was driven out into the garden to go sort it all out by my mother, close on half a century ago. Ive gone through quite a few versions of the hedge trimmer and I have to say I really like the handle on this one, it is very comfortable to grip and easy to manoeuvre into the position you want. Efficient as ever. Hedges get a short back and sides in next to no time. The cable at 10metres is a bit short for my needs and had to be plugged into a long extension cord, but thats fairly standard. Im guessing the next version will be some sort of rechargeable battery which can't come too soon. Until then, I lovebthe new handle.

This a very straight forward and light hedge trimmer to use. The blades will cut substantial branches and it works very fast which is a vast improvement on hand cutting ! It has a dual safety feature requiring that both controls are held before the trimmer will work. Releasing either of the handles immediately stops it working which is a good safety feature, If you don't mind the usual hassles of a cable fed machine this is a very good machine for the price.

This hedge trimmer is better than I expected, it’s quieter than expected to, it’s cutting ability is very good but the motor will at times shut it self off when it’s cutting thicker foliage. I have very large private’s , and quite a lot of them ! , I’m not sorry I choose this one ! . In terms of weight, it’s not to heavy but after holding it for a while , you don’t seem to notice it . Quite a neat cut , would recommend.

Great bit of kit- tiring after holding above your head for a while but does what it needs to. Will cut some branches but don't try thick ones as it won't cut them. Nice long lead, simple safety feature with two buttons to push to operate. Doesn't spin like some so cutting at angles can be tricky. Bought on price from Argos but saw that the price has increased so matches everyone else now

Used it twice after getting it no problems...Its been in its box in a dry shed and today right let's get the hedges done and nope its smoking :( I have only lost around £30 on a lightning deal... I hope nobody paying full price has lost the full amount on these...So....I wouldn't recommend this product unfortunately as I seem to have received a pretty dangerous one :(

I had a battery charged trimmer fail and used a neighbour's electric Flymo. I was impressed with the cutting power but the handling was awkward . I bought this one and I'm very impressed. I've whipped around the garden in no time. In addition to regular trimming of tall hedges i'm creating hedges from old plants . This will make it a breeze.

Makes cutting across top of wide hedge much easier, once I have got up the ladder. Do have an extending cutter but this makes a better job and I like to rake off the cuttings so get up ladder anyway. Is quite heavy and unwieldy for sides so would not use on small bit of hedge, but I have a lot.
