I drink a fair few spirits including whisky's although I find a lot of whisky's too strong for my tastes. This Bains whisky is probably not going to appeal to the hardened whisky enthusiast because it is very light and has a distinctive flavour. For those that find whisky's too harsh or you are only starting out into this territory, I can highly recommend this Bains whisky. For one it doesn't take the back of your throat out and is actually smooth. The taste is also very notable and enjoyable. Whilst I can never detect the descriptions written about most alcoholic beverages e.g. has aromas of strawberries with a hint of blueberry matched with honey....this does have a toffee/vanilla aroma and taste. In my mind it is comparable to some of the whisky liqueurs such as Bruader.I think the price is spot on and I will buy it again, full credit to Bain's, I can see why they have won several awards.

Peoples tastes and preferences vary widely, bear this in mind with my review. My likes and dislikes my be the polar opposite to yours, so you may love or loath this. To give you some idea of my likes, my general preference is for peaty, smokey Islay malts. This whisky has a nice rich golden colour with a nose that reminds me of cooking brandy with a hint of rum. It has a sweet and inviting scent and the taste is quite relaxing. Something you want to settle down with one evening whilst reading a book. It is something you can just keep sipping at all evening. It is quite smooth and rounded on the palette with no harsh and bitter scraping of the throatThis is my first venture into South African whiskeys and after this,I don't think it will be my last. definitely one for the cabinet and for the guests to try out, I'm sure they will be pleased

I like to feel that I know my single malts, my favourite tipples being Glengoyne, A'bunadh and to an extent, Glenfarclas. However, Bain's is not a single malt. It is is in fact a single grain whisky hailing from South Africa (the only other single grain whisky I can think of are the rye's from Canada, the majority of which are like drinking petrol).Admittedly, this is a somewhat sweet whisky but given it’s 43% it has little in the way of fire and is thus rather moreish. I like this whisky as it is a easy to drink, has a wonderful caramel finish and makes a great accompaniment to a pint of, say, London Pride, Good Ol’ Boy or Landlord.Furthermore at a price around the £30 mark, why not try a bottle, you will not be disappointed.

Whiskey review. 4 out of 5 stars : This is a very surprising whisky. I've never even heard of south African whisky before and being a loyal single malt Scottish whisky drinker I was rather sceptical of this. The description states "Combination of toffee, floral and vanilla aromas". There is a definite initial background taste of vanilla followed by the toffee aftertaste, but it's not a sweet taste at all. I have to say I really quite enjoyed this one and was a real pleasant surprise. Its very drinkable and very smooth. If you are a hardcore peaty single malt Scottish whisky drinker, then this probably isn't the one for you. However, If you like a varied whisky taste, then I would recommend this as being slightly different.

My aunt surprised me with a bottle of this when she came over to visit from Cape Town. Being South African I was surprised I hadn't heard of it. I used to drink scotch but began exploring all the best Bourbon's a few years back and have become a big lover of Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Woodford, Papy, etc. etc.I had no idea where Bain's was going to land on my taste buds.To my complete and utter surprise, myself and my bourbon-snob drinking buddy were really impressed with it. It kept creeping into my thoughts every day after the first taste. It is dangerously addictive if you ask me.

This was quite a nice single grain whisky - the first time I've ever tried a South African whisky, or a whisky made from maize. It's a medium honey colour and has some interesting spicy notes, combined with a nicely rounded oaked finish but for me seemed to have more of a bourbon character. I quite liked it (my Dad really liked it), but probably wouldn't buy it in future unless there was a compelling offer, as there are other whiskeys we both prefer in the same price bracket. Found it interesting and would happily buy/try other offerings from the brand.

My wife picked this at random from some special priced items. I just opened it and tried some (and then some more!); I have to say I'm most impressed! Obviously, whisky is a very personal experience and linked directly to your own taste etc. But this one in particular I really like. I get flavours of oak barrels, warm undertones and a slightly sweet aftertaste (brown/cane sugar) in the background. Very nice indeed.

Would have ordinarily written something stupid that also might be funny (usually not). However, and in ALL seriousness, this is a great whisky. Smooth grain taste, with some rounded flavours in the cinnamon and vanilla realm. If you prefer stuffy, peaty, smoky Scottish stuff (no offence, some of that is great), this might not be for you. If you travel on the bourbon and/or rye end of whiskey, give this a go

Think Bourbon, but on the lite side! Its good as a straight drink but in a mixer you will need more to get much out of it! Also the drink finishes quite quick. You can actually buy better drinks online for the same price. I dont want to make it into a critical review but this drink will be best enjoyed straight and still an enjoyable dram with the classic bourbon flavours

Bought as a pressie for hubby (I use hubbys prime account) as I like buying new whiskeys for him to try. He was very happy and said it was a really lovely whiskey, he is usually a Jamesons man but this up there in his top 5 now so will defo buy again

As a grain whisky, many single malt drinkers will probably over look the little gem. Lovely and smooth with definite toffee flavours. Picked this up for a little over £20 - a bargain in my opinion, nicer than Scotch I've had at over twice that price.

I bought this to try out of simple curiosity. And the good price. I'm glad I did, and would encourage others to. It is closer in taste to a very nice, smooth bourbon. I'm not sure if I would buy it again. It is definitely worth a try

The product arrived promptly, I have used Amazon for the first time this Christmas and I'm pleasantly surprised with the service. The whisky is a present for my sons South African geography teacher.Thank you

There are better single grains out there, but nothing anywhere near this price (£23). Not bursting with character but certainly tasty enough. Light, refreshing and sooo easy to drink. A perfect regular sip.

Love the flavour and so did my friends. Has it's own unique taste. Very smooth and very drink able. We finished the bottle in one sitting and wanted more! Will definitely be buying this SA beauty again.
