I compare all Irish whiskeys to my personal favourite, the legendary Redbreast 12. This isn't too far from it: there is the same treacley sweetness, a bit more spice than nuts, a somewhat heavier touch of dark fruits on the palate, the addition of candied orange zest notes, but essentially they're broadly similar. The issue arises from the spirits that comprise Writers Tears spending a bit less time in the barrel than the 12 years that Redbreast spends ageing. Consequently, the nose is a bit rougher, and there's a growing bitterness that sits more prominently on the palate with each sip. The first dram goes down very well here, but after the second, I did not want another. With Redbreast, the 'aah go on then' wins out until I notice a disturbing lowering in the level of the bottle and my inhibitions.I bought this on offer for a smidgen over £31 and at that price, I can think of a few delicious Islay malts (Laphroaig, Talisker) that kick this into touch. If you're dead-set on Irish then Jameson Black Barrel - when on offer for £25-28 - represents far better value with its trademark caramelised smoothness and exciting smokey finish; if you're patient you can cop Redbreast 12 for ~£37, and it really is worth the extra few quid. Still a good whiskey though, just flawed and a touch overpriced. 3.5 stars would be more appropriate here, but I'll round it up.

I received a bottle of this as a gift. I enjoy Scotch (and especially lean towards Speyside) but when I turn to Irish whiskeys I am usually pleased with the result, so I was looking forward to trying this one out (especially as I'd never even heard of it). It's packed with vanilla and a touch of honey, but it's soft and warm and not at all cloying - it leaves the entire mouth feeling happy, not coated - and there are slightly spiced fruits lingering in there somewhere, too. The finish was longer than I'd hoped for, too - wonderful!I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys sweet whisky and is looking in this price bracket.

Bought this for my husband for something new to try. He usually drinks Jameson’s or Bushmills. He really enjoyed this & having tasted a nip it’s really pleasant. It’s nice & buttery smooth with warm carmely undertones. Good value too although it’s only 700mls not 750.

I have never enjoyed a whiskey as much. Have one 50:50 with water or soda water as a nightcap every night. Have never done this before discovering this wee gem. Really much better than ANY Scotch. Love it!!

Bought this as a gift for a friend who just passed his PhD. Quick delivery, nice packaging and the product name is perfectly tailored for anyone in academia.

Whiskey is great but it did not come with a box despite it saying so in the product title and having pictures of the box

What an I say? It's Tears Whisky. The best Irish whiskey ever. I bought one for my hubby and one for my son.
