First, know what you are buying. This is a turn based strategy game with a squad of six units (usually men, occasional extras like a tank or a speeder) completing a series of missions. In most you work your way accross a map encountering enemies along the way. This is not Dawn Of War for a handheld. What it is, is great fun. Every decision could be the one that lands you in trouble. Should you duck and cover or race ahead to see around the next corner? Spend those last action points on moving behind a wall or take a long range shot at a chaos cultist? If you're a Games Workshop fan then there is enough detail to satisfy you and the turn based approach is far closer to the table top games that inspired it than Real Time Strategy versions. If you are new to the world of Warhammer then don't despair; the units and weapons are easy to grasp and great fun to use.The game is not perfect though. I bought my DS seduced by its unique stylus control system. Sadly, it isn't much good in this game. Using the D-pad and other buttons is far easier and more intuitive. The destructible landscape is good to a point but it does mean that with enough heavy weaponry you can just crawl accross some maps blowing up everything that crosses your path, be it enemy or building. Finally in an ideal world I would like a greater choice of races/units but must face reality. This is still a handheld with limited screen size and functions when compared to a PC. With a squad limit of 6 SPace marines make the obvious and most adaptible choice. By selecting the right secondary weapons you can arm them for close combat or long range fire fights. What is missing is any kind of individual unit progression. Given that every mission is linked through the storyline I would like to see units gain experience as they go, gain more HP or AP maybe. it would make losing a trooper that much more significant if you had spent five missions beefing him up first only to walk into a missile. Chaos Gate had such a system ten years ago and was until now the best Warhammer computer game ever made.Well worth your time despite a few minor flaws

First off i'm quite familiar with the 40k games, and this is basicaly a more enjoyable version of Chaos Gate. It's simply a great game; relatively hard campaign, good use of things like cover and it gives each unit strengths and weaknesses. The graphics arn't bad at all, and the environment is destructible - as long as you avoid using the stylus the controls are fine.the micro management is cool, too. You get to decide the weapons and ammo of each unit before deployment. However i think it is a missed oppertunity that they didn't give you the choice of what units you use before each mission. they could have introduced a cost-based system and let you decide whether you want two Terminators and a Land Speeder or 5 Marines, for example. But the ting i like most is how it gives you tactical freedom in each mission, and the game makes you feel like you are really in charge and makes you care for every unit. personally, i restart the mission if i lose a guy - but that was bloody hard so i don't recommend it. Multiplayer is also good, i use single card play with my friend and it really pits you against eachother. To Sum Up - Buy It, i'ts my favourite DS game so far, and well worth a tenner!

well, I completed the game about half an hour ago. I have had the Game longer than my DS....yeh i bough thte DS to play the game! i am a hard core fan but i am in no way a bias fan boy!. I did realy enjoy the game, however it can be very boring. I have had the game for over a year and went through bouts of playing completing 3 levels and then never playing again for a month or two.AS am sure other have pointed out, this is realy just a modern version of an old classic GW game: 'chaos gate'. Everything i loved about that game is still there. The turn based elemen is, in my opinion, essential to a hard line strategy game. no rushing in with more stuff an duffing up the enemy base. You need t plan each move with prescision.there game is great but i didnt like:poor graphics- they are prety darn bad. the story line 'twist' is the same as dawn of war...should have made a new and original one.i would have liked background music. All in all i recomend it heartily! for those who enjoy hard line strategy. Great for GW fans and everyone else.((i ordered 'Blood bowl' last night i will be reviewing when i have completed that))

When I ordered this game I was not expecting it to be anythinng special, but I am a fan of the Warhammer 40K games so I gave it a go. I can truly say that I loved this game, and I would reccommend it to anyone looking for a tactical turn-based game, or those with an interest in Warhammer 40K.The turn-based movement and shooting phases are reminiscent of the combat in the first two fallout games on PC, the graphics, while not up to DOW standard, adequately display each unit and animated movement. The AI of the enemy is also better than you would think, and can often take advantage of any little mistake you might have made such as leaving a unit in plain sight! The game draws you in and has you attempting to gain a perfect victory, replaying levels with different choices of weapons and tweaking your tactics. The second screen map is also very useful as you can stop a unit walking any further when you see the enemy appear on it.Overall I would say it is a great game for tactial gameplay, even more so for a fan of the Warhammer 40K universe, and uses the DS capabilities rather well.

Arrived on time, in good condition. Squad command is one of the better DS strategy games, though the graphics are better on the PSP version - and it is Whammer 40K!As Xmas is rapidly approaching, I've been buying a lot of preowned DS games as 'stocking fillers'. (And, I'll admit, a couple - like Europe, Squad Command, Rome & Worms - for myself to play too). Almost all the youngsters have a DS/2DS/3DS so these games make excellent small presents. BUT a couple of things to remember ......... 1. Make sure the description says the full game/instructions/case are included are loads that say 'cartridge only'. 2. Buy spare cases, because a lot will arrive in shabby cases,or more likely will be rammed through your front door slot, breaking the case in the process and those broken cases can have sharp plastic shards). 3. Order in good time as most are sent via standard RMail.

Firstly,in response to the guy below...its not an RTS. Its turn based strategy. Also it would be a bit too much to have more than 4 factions on such a small console.Plus Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines work better than any other faction. The other factions wouldn't really work in this sort of game ie Orks,Necrons Tyranids(cause they have huge mobs of them)Tau,Eldar,Dark Eldar,Imperial Guard(too easy to kill!)Anyhoo. This game has been well researched by THQ etc. I mean they even went as far as mentioning the Word Bearers Dark Apostle- Kar Phaeron!Of all the weapons I would have to say the Chainsword or the Lascannon are the most fun to use.The artwork in the cut scenes is fantastic. What canI say apart from this game is great.

I too think this is a fantastic, addictive game. At it's core it is a very solid turn based strategy game with tightly controlled mechanics and a 'just one more go' feel. My only criticisms are that it's a little short and it's too difficult to control using the stylus - use the D-Pad instead. As a professional game developer I dispair at the criticism levelled at the game below - rating it lower because theres no music to listen to during gameplay? Really?

the game is done well and with the progressively harder missions it does have quite a bit of longevity, the on-line multilayer is good but finding games takes a while, multilayer is fun and would love to get a full 8 player match, the 3-d graphics are well executed but with a fixed screen you can 'lose' enemy units behind buildings, also the lack of a soundtrack means it can get very quiet.Overall it is a very good game but is let down by the odd shortfall

Although everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion, I personally have found this game to be very entertaining. For me it was an impulse buy purely based on the Warhammer licence and I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised. The graphics are as good as can be expected on the DS and the gameplay is fun and addictive. Overall I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys turn based strategy games or enjoys the Warhammer universe.

This is a great game, but a little difficult to get to grips with at first. I heartily recommend this game for any fans of the tabletop game, though I was a bit disappointed that you cannot play as the Chaos Space Marines. Even so it is a great way to while away the time between Gaming Sessions and to refine your Squad Tactical moves.Overall a very cool game, but not as Awesome as it could have been.

I bought this game for my 11 year old son, who's just starting to get into Warhammer 40K. He's very happy with it and has a lot of fun playing it, both solo and multiplayer with a friend who's at a similar level. I suspect it'll get less interesting as he gets more involved in the tabletop game, but as an introduction for a novice it's a good game.

Really good fun. only fault is that there is not a wider selection of characters/chapters to play. some really good fun audio and lots of fun graphics. Recommend it. Very entertaining.

Lags a little on the DS compared to the PSP version but still a solid game - and with the few games set in the Warhammer universe avail to handhelds it's certainly a good choice!

This game reminds me a lot of the original Space Hulk table top game. Not so much in the layout, but in the rules. It felt natural for me to play.
