If you even remotely enjoy Talisman and have a passing interest in the WH40k universe then this is a no-brainer.The core game is, I would say, 80-90% the same as Talisman. Go around the outer areas to buff up, enter the middle area then enter centre and brave the challenge of the centre spaces to reach the objective, much like the Crown of Control. The key differences are that this game is currently 4 players, max. I think you could play with more but you'd need a mechanism to keep track of character levels and also counters to track your player colour, which can be important. Which brings me onto the levelling system. Each character starts at level 0 and with trophies gained from kills, they level up with each level bringing rewards such as stat increases and influence, the Relic version of Gold. The game board itself has spaces which, like Talisman, require you to draw a card(s). However, these are broken into three colour markers, with Red = Orcs, Blue = Tyranids and Yellow = Eldar. Similiarly, your stats are the same colours and roughly indicate what you'll likely need in order to beat said races. Strength is Red, Cunning is Yellow and Willpower is Blue.Dice rolls work in much the same way except for one core difference. Roll results can be specific meaning. If you roll a 6 on an attack check, you've 'exploded' and get to roll again. This means even weaker character stats still have a chance to get multiple rolls and defeat stronger enemies. This also works in reverse, however.A core mechanic to this game, over Talisman, is Corruption. Throughout the game, you will gather Corruption intentionally or not. As your corruption grows (as you gain more corruption cards), you have a higher and higher chance of being 'blessed' with an ability. However. If your corruption reaches a certain limit, usually 6, then you die. Irreversably. If you lose your lives, you simply lose some gear and start over at the Apothecarium, but keeping character increases such as level and even followers.Corruption offers no such favours :)The pieces, including the board, are spectacular, particularly the board. Huge, with great artwork. All in all, I've thoroughly enjoyed my time so far. It's a shame that they've bundled only enough bits for 4 players but with a little time and some cardboard you could easily fix this, although I'm sure it will be addressed in an expansion (of which there are currently none).

I have really enjoyed this game so far - it's hard to communicate the satisfaction of a mid to late game character really coming together. Winning is tough enough to feel justified, and the tension of a the sudden race to the finish, initiated by one player suddenly feeling ready to rush the objective makes for a tense and enjoyable conclusion to what will have been a long game (I estimate at least 1 hour per experienced player).Players aren't directly competing or combating each other, so it needn't feel overly antagonistic as you play either. Though there will be opportunities to screw over others if that's the kind of game you want. There are pain points: There are a lot of rules and it will take more than two play-throughs to feel confident they are all being applied correctly.(I'm on game six and still regularly checking the manual). However things do make sense and it's not unassailable once your set up and started making turns. -Owners of Talisman may not experience this quite as much as the mechanics are similar, I'm told-Similarly early in the game there is a good chance your character will suffer and die. Defeat soon followed by corruption and defeat are ever-present threats. They are exacerbated by your weakness when the game begins, and for quite a while afterwards depending on the rolls of the (probably weighted) Dice. Sixes come up often and as well as being a high score also explode - meaning an extra roll added to a score ad infinitum. This usually means unnecessary overkill when you get them or unassailable odds, from even apparently weak opponents, in the hands of your enemies. In conclusion I'm glad I bought the game. I love the 40k universe and this really does it justice. It's fun because it's tough, it's tough because things start harsh and can frequently feel unfair. But it wouldn't be rewarding if it weren't this way, it's worth the pain.

Relic is game that can be played by anyone. You don't need to be familiar with the warhammer 40k universe or play 40k to be able to play this. It's a game that is very easy to learn but will keep you playing for hours. The box contains:1 x Rulebook1 x Game Board10 x Plastic Character Pieces10 x Character Sheets16 x Attribute and Life Dials4 x Six-sided Dice100+ Tokens300+ cards in 8 typesThe goal of the game is to make it to the centre of the game board and complete the objective, this objective can change from game to game to keep player's interest. The game board is split into levels, outer, middle and inner. Inner is where you travel through the realms of chaos to reach the objective. You make it to each progressive level by moving around the board fighting monsters, completing missions and obtaining items and relics. As you gain levels and upgrades you can decide to move closer to the centre and fight more monsters at once. The game is competitive but doesn't make you challenge other players into combat, this feature is being saved for the upcoming expansion called Relic: Nemesis. All the characters are balanced well and forces you as the player to change your tactics each time you play the game again. The board, figures and cards have all been made from high quality material and feel good. You can tell the people that made this game took care of everything they were doing.I haven'y come across any points in the games I've played where the people playing didn't know what to do so we had to stop the game. There is always something happening that makes everyone pay attention, unlike other games I've played where people are on their phones during the game.Even if you aren't someone that plays board game regularly this is worth picking up. The price is justified because everything in the box is top quality.

I love Warhammer 40K and I love Talisman so when Relic arrived buying it was a no brainer. As usual with Fantasy Flight Games the production values are high. A sturdy board, lots of cards with great artwork and plenty of tokens. The best components are the character busts that represent the players on the board. They are beautifully sculpted and well detailed.Gameplay is simple, especially if you are familiar with Talisman, but it IS subtlety different in many ways. Like Talisman the board is split into three regions: outer, middle and inner and, like Talisman, players move around these regions drawing cards that represent the many events and creatures of the 40K universe. However in Relic the adventure cards (called threat decks) are split into three types, each keyed to specific strengths (willpower, strength and cunning). As you travel around the board you must try and play to your strengths whilst searching for one of the fabled relics that will allow access to the warp rift at the centre of the board and the secret at its heart. As you search you battle the foes of the Emperor, find wargear and complete missions, all of which help make your character stronger and more able to deal with the myriad threats that you face.Relic is great fun and easy to learn. It is slightly more tactical than Talisman despite being the same system at heart. If I have a quibble its the same one I have with all Fantasy Flight games: playing time. The game box quotes 1-2 hours to play and this might be true for some of the quests but, in the three games we've played so far, we have exceeded the playing time easily (one game took over five hours!).To summarise: Relic is a great game with simple rules, high production values and lots of replayability. Just make sure you have PLENTY of time to enjoy it!

Relic is based on 'Talisman', a 'prehistoric' :-) game of Games Workshop, but now set in the Warhammer 40K universe. You play one of the ten heroes/adventurers who roam the universe in search of the priceless 'Relics', which they need to face a final and superpowerful nemesis. The (enormous) game board is devided in three zones, where symbols on the different mission squares tell you which of your three skills will be tested: strength, willpower or cunning through events, battling monsters, encounters etc. You have to upgrade your character so it will be able to succesfully perform more challenging and difficult missions, without falling prey to corruption and decay. This happens by starting missions in the outer tier of the board, then moving to the middle tier and finally ending in the inner tier. If you survive all that, THEN you can try to face the final mission.By succesfully ending missions you tally points and trophies to upgrade your character and earn Relics. The old Talisman formula got a reboot which makes Relic a great, vibrant, lively and smooth game. The rules are relatively simple and after half an hour you are in the middle of the action. The game itself is a real eyecatcher: a stunning game board, countless cards with beautiful artwork, counters and last but not least ten highly detailed miniatures (a must paint for miniature-painters)that represent the characters.Relic takes you to an exiting, but dangerous and cruel universe and never loses its grip. A single game can take up to four hours.Once you've played Relic, you'll want to play it again... and again... and...An absolute recommendation!!

I carried out some research into Relic prior to purchasing to ensure that it was different enough from Talisman Revised 4th Edition, which I also own.I'm happy to report that it is indeed much more than just Talisman reskinned. The theme is fantastic and the artwork on the cards, tokens and board are of the highest quality. I have an interest in Warhammer 40K and therefore I accept that I may get more enjoyment from this than say someone who's never heard of it. However taken at face value as a Sci-Fi adventure game its top-notch regardless of your knowledge of the theme. This is by far one of the best Thematic games I have played in a while and it's based on my favourite game system Talisman.Future expansions (Nemesis) will add so much more to it and I look forward to these as there are so many ways to expand this game; new races, characters, weapons, and boards (areas) from the 40K Universe to be tapped. If your not fond of the table-top wargaming version of 40K this is a fun light adventure style game that remains 100% true to its theme and the universe it inhabits. If I was to say anything negative about Relic, I would have to say that sometimes games can drag on for longer than feels necessary. This can be due to a number of factors due in part to the games randomness. However these instances are few and far between and we usually just call a winner based on the total number of all attributes after so much playtime.I would encourage anyone with an interest in luck based, roll & move style boardgames to pick this up and if you have any interest in 40K or Talisman then its a must buy.For the Emperor.

PROS+ Fantastic quality components - the board is huge and beautiful, and the playing pieces are very well made and sizable+ Great selection of cards means that the game is different every time+ Clever rules that ensure every encounter is a risk and yet you always have a chance of success+ Quick to play, even with four people+ The theme is very strong and the flavour text really adds to the sense of adventure+ Good mixture of chance and skill+ Works just as well with two players as it does with three or fourCONS- This is a dice-based game so not for those that dislike chance-based games- It is very large and so you will need a large table to play it on.A big dining table is ideal- The rulebook is a little confusing and has no indexAll in all I loved this game. We have played around ten games of it so far and every one of them has been fun and exciting. We've tried all the missions and characters, and we have played with two, three and four players. This is not a great strategy game so you will not need to spend hours pondering the rules between sessions. Rather, it is a run pick up and play game with just enough skill-based content to keep it exciting every time.

My group of friends have a collective interest in 40k so Relic was an easy choice when it came to selected the next board game for our monthly game night. The rules are easy to learn and Fantasy Flight have a video on you tube which sums up the game nicely if your in two minds about it. PDF version of the rules are also available. It can take a few hours to play out.The model busts are nicely detailed and the the art work is amazing. Its also nice to see a sister of battle included. Only negative is that there isn't a huge amount of player interaction but one of the expansions fixes this issue or so I believe.

This game is very well produced, with good quality components. The game is slightly more complicated than Talisman, with the addition of corruption cards, but all in all pretty quick to learn. The game can drag on a bit, even without using the different end game scenarios. Our first game lasted about 4 hours with three players, although this was with a 8 and 11 year old, so there was quite a bit of explaining to be done. I would certainly recommend it to fans of WH40K and Talisman fans alike.

My partner purchased this as he is a fan of Warhammer type things, I generally am not. Saying that, however, I have to add that I love playing Relic. It is hours of entertainment, great to play with friends at the weekend with a bottle of wine on the go...Even when we've planned to play a different board game someone will always joke about "a quick game of Relic".Never met anyone who, after playing, hasn't enjoyed it.Just pure fun... With lots of competition between players.

I was searching for a fantasy game for my partner and, after doing lots of research on the net, found this incredible game. It does take a while to go through the instructions, but it's worth having a bit of patience. It's beautifully designed with vibrant colours and high quality artwork and materials - I'd definitely look at purchasing other Warhammer games in the future!

I choose this board game because it haves some inovations with the levelin up system and stats count!!The game is awesosme, realy nice artwork at the board and the minatures fantastics. The game tottlay deserve it's moneyThe only reason i put 4 stars is because the luck isn't with my sight while playing :)!!I hightly recomended to the fans of Warhammer 40k !

25.1.2014

I rated the game according to the amount of entertainment it brings and its clearly a 5/5. Everything about the game from the map to the figurine oozes quality. However, the game can take extremely long. I don't know if its because we were new players but the game took us roughly 5 hours to get to what i would estimate was the middle of it.

Great miniatures, great feel of 40k univers. Takes about one read trough manual and one gaming session to understand all the rules and everything. FFG put a great effort in making everything look good and have a quality board, miniatures, cards etc. Basically - love it, and would recommend to any 40k fan.

Must say this was not brought for myself but partner seemed very pleased when he received it, so i'm guessing as far as a role-playing board game goes it must live up to all what role-players expect it to be like, fun exciting .
