Bought this in a recent Playstation store sale for £16, which is probably about the right price.Though the game definitely has its faults, the very mixed response is, I believe, in part due to the poor instructions for some important game elements in the initial "Prologue" training missions. I've listed those controls at the end for the use of anyone who buys it. Possibly this is due to it being developed from iOS / PC versions, where the controls may have been more intuitive. The missions are arranged in groups of four, in "Acts". Act I is the group of four "Prologue" missions, for example. Haven't finished my first run through, yet, but here are 40 missions,so I'm assuming ten acts. Each completed mission awards you 20 in-game currency, which I think is supposed to be Imperial Coin (IC), and a wargear drop, which can be tier I-IV, IV being the best. Each completed act awards you pack of three random cards, which can be wargear, weapons or space marines, which can again be anything from tier I-IV. Additionally, when you sell wargear, weapons, for IC4, or space marines, for IC6, no matter which tier, to buy more packs of cards for IC100 each. For the sake of clarity, there are no micro-transactions, this is all in-game currency.Only Normal mode is available in the initial run through, with Veteran and Heroic locked. I farmed XP to unlock stuff, early on, but I think I probably could have just let it naturally accumulate and been able to complete the missions. Each marine rolls with random perks - "abilities" and "traits" - which can be passive or active. Some perks are individual buffs and some are team buffs, which helps make space marines feel more individual. Each space marine also has a Health, Accuracy and Critical chance value, which are levelled up by spending XP. Each level up of these values is exponentially more expensive; L1-2 = 250XP, L2-3 = 350XP, L3-4 = 500XP and so on.Initially I thought the camera was rubbish, far too tightly focused and slow-moving, with no zoom...or, at least, I thought so, as this is one of the controls NOT covered in the training missions. Once I stumbled upon the zoom control the game became much more of a pleasure to play. You're able to cycle through the marines using L1+R1. Each marine is highlighted, though it is subtle, so can sometimes be hard to see. The highlighted colour is dependent on chapter. Dark blue for Ultra Marines, which is the most awkward to see, yellow for Space Wolves, red door Blood Angels etc.I find the combat in this game extremely similar to the original X-com I played on PC years ago, with WH40K skin. Unlike X-com, if a space marine dies it's not permanent, they just lose unused XP being accumulated to unlock some of the higher costing perks. Movement and actions are dictated by Action Points, the default value being 4AP per marine, which can be buffed to a maximum of 8AP.What is amazing, in a game which cost £40 at release, is the lack of options. You can select language, re-watch intro and credits...that's it! No audio, video or gameplay options, which is pretty poor.Regardless of it's faults, I am enjoying it and feel the price I paid is reasonable for the game I'm playing. For those interested, I've listed the chapters included in the game, below, taken from the in-game codex. When in-game, you're able to access each element of the codex for a fuller breakdown.--"Missing" controls -Camera -Zoom = L2 + right stickTilt / swivel = L2 + left stickAbilities / wargear -Select = directional pad left-rightSquare = confirmX = action--Codex (total number cards in brackets)Chapters -Space Wolves (23)Blood Angels (24)Ultramarines (24)Enhanced Edition (15)- 4 x Black Templars + 1 weapon- 4 x Dark Angels + 1 weapon- 4 x Imperial Fists + 1 weaponWhite Scars (3)Raven Guards (3)--*** WARNING *** There does appear to be a glitch specific to assault marines equipped with a power axe. After each kill the game auto-selects another target, if in range. If you switch from a ranged target to a target in an adjacent square the game goes into an animation loop. The only way I've found to to get out of this is hit the PlayStation button on the controller and close the game. You'll restart at the same position when you restart the game. It's not happened again since I switched to a chain sword, so appears poweraxe-specific.

It's a simple turn based game once you understand the controls I think the mapping of buttons could of been better for ps4 and xbox and it's not the best port of the game. You have ap which is small white dots on the left side of your marine and you have 4 of them each one is a square you can move or attack, some guns require 2 ap to use and plasma and melta weapons can over heat so you can't fire multiple times muchYou have your space marines you can level up from gaining xp from killing tyanids. Who ever get the kill gets the most xp and other get a small amount. After missions you gain in game currency which is only used to buy a three pack of mystery items and you get 2 weapons/attachments and a marine.Duplicate weapons and marines you can sell off to get more currency to get more items. There is so many space marine's you can get ranging from basic to high up and each marine has perks/ability you can unlock with xp and higher level marines have unique ability'sThere are 40 missions which do start off very easy but the difficulty spike does get introduced at the first proper bossOverall I would give it 4 out of 5 it's fun because I love space marines and turn based combat but it's slow and has crashed a couple of times so far and there isn't a great deal to be offered except the campaign which as I said is 40 missions so quite a bit but would of been nice for a skimish style combat against the computer in different senarios and against space marines. Maybe even a local play 2 player game

The game itself is very detailed and true to the 40k universe as you'd expect. The controls can be confusing at first and does take a while to get used to.Turn based combat may not be for everyone as missions can seem to get slow and tedious.Overall its about average in terms of actual gameplay and I'd suggest the biggest group of players are die hard Games Workshop fanatics as opposed to "gamers".

It's low budget, sub par graphics, sub par story, but if you like Warhammer and want to kill some Tyranids in a strategy game (think low budget XCOM), then it's worth a play. Greatest thing is that you can put the game way and pick it back up a few months later and not miss a beat.

Saw this on t'internet and love turn based strategy games, my favourite being X-com on current hardware, so I thought that this would be right up my alley and indeed it was, loving it so far.

Really fun game although it did crash and lose my data but after I re did everything it hasn’t happened since but other than that a really good well developed game

Tactical game, much like the old Space Marine game way back on the Amiga. Very small levels however, but with lots of collectables and upgradable characters.

12.12.2018

Tense, atmospheric, tactical foray into the 40K Universe. Easy to get the hang of, it then ramps up the tension. Good game.
