Spider-Man for the PS4 is impressive to say the least, I'm more of an Xbox fan and only tend to buy exclusives for PlayStation but I can happily say that I think this is a serious contender for your wallet. This is really my first Spider-Man game, I did play Spider-Man 3 on PS2 but hardly played it. I will say I haven't beaten the game, nor have I unlocked most gadgets, suits/suit powers, suit mods etc. I am writing this review when I'm not playing so something may have been written at different times as I've gotten farther in the game so I'm sorry if it may seem out of order or doesn't flow well. most of what I've done so far are exploring the world and the 'Assassins Creed collectible hunting’,doing side missions, collectibles, saving citizens, beating up thugs, taking pictures of landmarks, unfogging the map etc. I can easily say that this is easily a fantastic game with solid gameplay, a vibrant alive world, fun exploration and entertaining missions. While I could go on about how much I love the game try and persuade you to buy the game to enjoy the experience I want to talk about 4 main points that I hope will make you decide if you want to pick this game up and maybe a few small things afterwards. The main points are combat, exploration, progression, and story. I've chosen these 4 points because I believe they cover enough of a broad overview on what anyone is looking for in a game.Combat -I’m very impressed with the combat despite it having influence from other games such as the Batman Arkham games and Shadow of Mordor, for instance spider sense to indicate when you would dodge, a combo counter and a new feature which is the focus bar. The focus bar fills up as you fight for landing hits and taking out enemies. The purpose of the focus bar is used if you are low on health you can use it midfight to replenish your health or if you fill it you can do a finishing move on a enemy to take them out similar to the Batman games. The one thing that I think makes the combat different from Batman and Shadow is the aerial combat and gadgets, for instance you can knock an enemy in the air and jump up and continue giving him fisticuffs. It wouldn't be a Spider-Man game without the web shooters and it's fun to use, in combat they can be used to slow and prevent an enemy from attacking and guarding against your attacks if they are webbed up enough, on top of disabling a enemy if a target is knocked on the ground or pushed into a wall and you used enough shots from the web shooters you can web the enemy to the ground/wall taking them out of the fight completely and can be a smart way to eliminate annoying enemies. Because of this quick fast paced combat and adding this new dimension of combat it adds to the game making it enjoyable even though it's similar to games before it. For those who like a sneaky and subtle approach don't fear, you haven't been forgotten. There are even skills and a suit power that help you be even more stealthy should you desire. There is a difficulty curve (at least for me), I couldn't get used to the combat and effectively take down enemies as easily and it's one of the reasons I've done so much exploring to familiarise myself with the combat since Fisk game me the hands and would wreck me and prepare me for the story while also exploring the world. Once you get used to it, the combat feels great and is super fun, so if you find it hard at first I'd say just do some exploring.Exploration -The web slinging is awesome, the sound of the web shooting out then hearing it taking tension as Spider-Man swings from building to building is awesome, I thought at first having to constantly use the right trigger would get old and tedious but it doesn't, it never feels old or like a chore, plus the music score keeps you motivated. The map isn't the largest but doesn't need to be, it's packed pretty densely with activities and is still large, however it should only take a few minutes to get from one end to the other, usually with some great scenery only streets away. Included are landmarks like the Avengers Tower looking down and laughing at anything nearby. I feel the world is very alive, say you are swinging around on your way to a main mission, a thug activity appears, you swoop down save the day, the crowd around you cheers and thanks you, one approaches you and you give him a high five, you notice a red newspaper box and walk over to it to see the latest headline as soon as you close out of it someone else approaches you, saying there are some scary looking dudes at a construction site nearby and marks it on your map, or saying they had seen a backpack webbed to a building marking it for you. Everything feels connected and important which is refreshing. There are different activities that unlock as you progress through the game, so you can't collect everything as soon as you are let loose to explore, fast travel isn't even an option until you complete a few story missions. At first glance it doesn't seem like there's a lot to do but it is quite an offering and several incentives to explore, do missions etc. Which ties into my next category which is progression.Progression -In this game there are many different things to do to help you out, for starters you can level up. Leveling up will come naturally in the game from main missions, side missions, collecting, beating up thugs etc., Leveling up give you a skill point every level and every few levels a health increase among other bonuses, you can then use the skill points in 3 branches which are Innovator, Defender, and webslinger for a total of 34 skills. Innovator is combat focused but more unique methods instead of just beating someone up for instance one skill allows you to yank away armed enemies guns away and another perk from the same tree allows you to fling said yanked away gun back at the enemy turning it against them. Defender tree is more your typical direct combat with skills that give benefits for perfectly dodging or other skills that help generate more focus for you. Lastly is webslinger which offers some traversal skills, helping you move around the city faster but still has some combat skills involved, one skill allows you to charge jump and another allows you to swing kick shielded enemies. Overall when you see it it doesn't look like much but it is. These skills have different cost and do have an impact, you do feel that they are useful as you unlock them. As you level up you also gain access to different suits and can customize them. There are 25 suits (as far as I can tell unless there are hidden ones not shown in the selection screen), they are obtained by leveling up and trading different resources for the suits, you have to level up for suits to become available for purchase and almost every suit I've unlocked so far comes with a suit power. Suits can be picked and tailored to however you like, each have unique looks and can be customized with suit powers and suit mods, you have to buy new suits to unlock new suit powers but once unlocked than can be used with any suit, im not sure how many suit powers there are since I haven't leveled up to unlock most of the suits and it doesn't show me how many suit powers there are. Suit powers appear to be primarily combat oriented, in combat you activate you suit skill by pressing in the left and right thumb sticks to activate your suit power, these are charged timed temporary bonuses ranging from rapidly generating focus, holo decoys, becoming bulletproof, a spider bot to aid in combat and much more. To add even more, you can choose 3 suit mods on top of your suit power, there are 23 suit mods which which are constant little perks each with different bonuses aiding you in several ways. You can upgrade your gadgets as well, most of the 8 gadgets have 4 or 5 upgrades which you have to reach a certain level to be able to upgrade and have the right resources to upgrade. I've mentioned resources a lot and I feel they are done quite well, there are 6 different resource tokens which are research, landmark, base, crime, challenge and backpack. Each of which are unique and aren't tedious to get. You get landmark tokens for taking pictures of landmarks across the map, crime tokens for taking out and resolving crimes, backpack tokens from collecting backpacks scattered throughout the world and so on and so on. The resources are used for everything, so to unlock things you will have to do a bit of everything, for instance suits don't only use one type of tokens, all suits, mods, and gadget upgrades use different tokens making everything important and tie in together as necessary which I like.Story -The story is great so far from what I played with great and interesting characters. In this game we have a more mature Spider-Man, who in his early 20s and has had years of experience on the job. A thing that I think makes this game stand out is how the main story and side quest even though you may occasionally do the same thing as a crime encounter you'd find while exploring is the build up to it, it gives back story and makes doing these things not feel old or repetitive. Even collecting some resources, for instance a favourite of mine are the research labs, each ones different, each has its own purpose and they are fun small missions to do and I still haven't unlocked off of the activities which keeps me excited what I might unlock the next mission. Side quest are well done, in one mission I went from attacking thugs to chasing birds around the city who had taken a flash drive that I was going to look on after beating the thugs up. Spider-Man himself is of course very likeable, always trying to do the right thing and making jokes/smart comments whenever he can keeping the experience fun.The thing I like about this game is the attention to detail and the effort put into even the small things and how everything is connected. You can tell the developers put heart into this game and wanted everything to mean something and be important for instance backpacks not only giving tokens for upgrades but unlocking a small momento with a small amount of commentary on it. As someone who mainly is on Xbox, this is a game I needed to justify my reason for having a PS4, it's a great game with a ton to do. If your on the fence about getting a PS4 but are not sure what games to get with it I would say this is a game to consider, or if you already have a PS4 and are considering this game I would recommend it easily if you like open world games or even if you're just a fan of Spider-Man.If you have read this far props to you, this is a lengthy review but I want to share as much as I can because games aren't cheap, and if you can only get a game very rarely you want to make sure it's what you want, or even something someone else might enjoy if it's a gift. I found it awesome getting to play a superhero game as I've recently gotten into comics, while I haven't read much Spider-Man it makes me want to read more and more. Insomniac have done a great job, and it's great to see insomniac creating games that still appeal to me, from ratchet and clank on the PS2 to now Spider-Man on the PS4 even if I play Xbox more, insomniac have had an impact on my childhood and still does all these years later.Hopefully you found this review helpful.Long live Spider-Cop!

The announcement that Insomniac Games would be taking on an open-world Spider-Man game to try and surpass the excellent Spiderman 2 on the original Playstation was met with scepticism and intrigue. Following their success with the Infamous series and more recently Sunset Overdrive, if any studio was up to this mammoth task, Insomniac Games felt like a natural fit to the franchise.Skip forward to 2018 and Spider-Man is not just one of the best games released this year, it’s a title that makes you truly feel like Spider-Man, nailing almost every aspect of the webslinger in this well crafted open-world game. Aesthetically,New York looks great too with some impressive lighting effects and a long draw distance combining with responsive and enjoyable web-slinging mechanics to make Spider-Man one of, if not the best, Spider-Man title to ever be released on console.Split into three acts, the story begins with you literally jumping into action after a brief opening cut-scene foreshadowing what’s to come. A prologue mission then ensues that sees you tackling one of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes, helping you become accustomed to the controls and general ebb and flow of combat and traversing the world. From here, the story then progresses, seeing you switch regularly between Peter Parker and Spider-Man as you juggle your real-life responsibilities with fighting crime. The first two acts build slowly, establishing each of the key characters in the Spider-Man universe including work colleague Dr Otto Octavious, Norman Osborne, Mary Jane Watson and more. Scattered throughout the story are numerous stealth-based segments too that see you take control of two other characters that help to shake things up and bring some much needed variety to the game.Toward the end of the second act, all hell breaks loose as a handful of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies are released into the city and with it, some of the best boss fights of the game. The final few missions see you taking on these escaped enemies in an impressively creative manner before finishing the game on a note of intrigue, hopefully in preparation for the much-needed follow-up to the recently announced fastest selling game of the year. The one element of Spider-Man that was absolutely crucial for the studio to nail was the web-slinging. Not since the Playstation 1 days has this felt as intuitive and realistically depicted as it is here and some of that is thanks to the simple HUD system behind this mechanic. A translucent white dot appears against any surface you can web sling from with an additional tap of X giving you a boost of speed or height depending on the angle and trajectory of your web sling. It does take a little getting used to, especially combined with running up buildings and walls, but after a few hours you’ll easily be zipping around the city, diving from perilous heights and performing mid-air somersaults.Traversing the world is something that worked surprisingly well with both Rocksteady’s Batman series and the Infamous games and you can see echoes of influence from both of these titles through almost every facet of the game. The combat takes much the same route as the Arkham series with on-screen prompts of when an enemy is about to hit you and combination of finishers or attacks helping to string together long combos. These in turn build focus which can be used to regenerate health during a tough fight or use one of around 15 skills that can turn the tide in battle. As you progress through the game the combat does open up considerably as you unlock new skills, gadgets and abilities to aid you in combat. A dizzying array of flips, quick hits, shooting webs and general Spider-Man banter mid-fight all help to make this feel like an authentic portrayal of the character although as a personal gripe, the slow-mo hurricanrana (leg flip move) does become tiresome after 15+ hours. In true open-world fashion there’s a whole plethora of things to do here and while a lot of these do feel like tiresome busy-work, the way they’re drip-fed through the story, and in turn onto the map, helps to avoid the game feeling over-encumbered by them early on which smartly makes it far more enjoyable to undertake the various activities on offer. Beginning with collectable backpacks, simple street crimes and radio towers, the game then evolves to fully-fledged base hideouts, side missions, laboratory mini-games and more. Thankfully these all serve a purpose, granting you tokens which in turn can be used to unlock new suits and gadgets. Those going into this expecting to see an exhaustive list of Spidey’s greatest villains will almost certainly be left disappointed. At most, seven of Spider-Man’s villains show up with obvious omissions being Venom, Carnage, Chameleon, Mysterio to name a few all missing from the game. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, given the story could easily have become bogged down with too many villains, it’s worth pointing out as the bulk of time spent fighting enemies are with three different variation of gang and foot soldiers rather than the more recognisable villains in Spider-man’s history. As a huge fan of the wall-crawler it is a little disappointing to say the least, especially given the incredible work done in the story to really flesh out and realistically depict each of the key villains you encounter. It would have been nice to see separate quests early on that see you tackle and imprison these villains before their ultimate release late on but this is a minor gripe and not something that detracts from the enjoyment of the game. For all of its positives, Spider-Man is not without its problems. Little graphical glitches, frame-rate drops, screen freezes and a few technical hiccups including wonky enemy AI and physic-based problems does hold this back from being a more polished and refined title but it’s not enough to become problematic until very late on in the game. The potential to build on the success of this title is really where the excitement lies though and seeing as this is the fastest selling game of the year, a follow-up game certainly seems like an inevitability.Insomniac Games have done a wonderful job bringing Spider-Man to life and not only is this the best representation of the webslinger since the very early days on Playstation 1, Spider-man finally looks and feels like his comic book counterpart. With tightly refined web mechanics, a slick combat system and a really enjoyable story, this is one Playstation exclusive you really should check out.8.5/10

First off the swing mechanics are perfect, after only a few minutes you will easily be swinging your way around New York with ease! You can attach to every building and your web does attach to the buildings not the sky so it feels right much like that of the Spiderman 2 game! You quickly realise this when traveling through a park which forces you to swing lower as you attach to trees not to mention if you attempt to go in any area with nothing to attach to like the sea. It just feels right and easy! Probably the only time this gets frustrating is during anything which see’s you swinging against a clock but I’ll come to that later. This form of transport isn’t perfect though,if you misgauge a wall you are swinging too closely to you could accidently attach yourself to it and getting off a wall isn’t as quick as you would like. This didn’t stop me enjoying it though; it was my preferred method of travel even above the later unlocked fast travel.Combat is also every good, heavily taken from the Arkham Batman games this combat is enjoyable, quick with a variety of different moves and most of all looks fantastic. There are a few issues here and there like your spider sense which can appear when you have no time to actually dodge out of the way, mostly when being hit by a missile! While I mention the guys with RPG’s the missiles they fire can take off a lot of health and sometimes even though you dodge they can hit enemies or even the general public without a single reaction! But the worst of all is when they fire a RPG when they are standing right next to you giving you no time to respond and seriously would anyone ever fire a RPG in that close proximity? What also makes the combat fun is Spiderman’s humour which is mostly funny and quick witted, I found myself a few times smirking over one of his one liners. This said there is also a quite a few of them that will repeat themselves especially if you are a completionist. Again I’ll come back to that.Story was extremely satisfying. I really enjoyed watching things unfold even though some things I knew were coming it still had plot twists and bits which left me leaning ever so closer into the screen. I think I probably enjoyed it more than any of the films which says a lot.Every part of the story provided something different and was even broken into sections where you would play as Peter or one of his friends which again offered more of a stealth style game play. These parts (apart from one) were not fun but luckily short. There is a lot to do in such a small map, from random crimes to base takedowns, to collectables, research bases and challenges! The crimes are fun however having said that, later in the game there are loads of them, and while the combat is fun this goes a bit too far. Anyone who wants to unlock suits or gadgets or just wants to 100% the game is in for a long slog of repeat battles which also opens you up to hearing the same banter again and again. The bag collectables are easy and each one offers you a little story of past Spidey stories and the research bases provide you with something a little different to do which breaks everything else up nicely. The bases will offer waves and waves of enemies to take down and the Challenges well the challenges! The challenges are good enough and provide just that, a challenge. These are split into Bomb Disposals, fighting crime, stealth and drone chases. I enjoyed them all; each one is against the clock and does provide a challenge to finish at the highest level. I said I liked them all and well that was a little lie as the Drone challenges made me angry. It felt like it was taken from Superman 64 where you had to chase a drone through the city making sure you passed through a blue bubble (sound familiar?) the issue isn’t following it and if you were happy with silver than you probably wouldn’t have eve minded them. It’s when you wanted full marks which meant you had to stay very close to the drone and making sure you hit every blue bubble thrown at you. I got very angry during these sections, accidently attaching to walls or the camera swing around too much meaning to fling yourselves to far past a bubble or even in the wrong direction really tried my patience.Every extra thing you do in New York will give you tokens which can be used to gain new suits, gain new equipment and level them up and also gain more suit skills. You gain Spidey skills when you level up your character which comes from good old EXP, there is no maximum or at least I don’t think there is as I finished on Level 52 and the bar was still going however I unlocked everything at level 50. Platinum trophy was pretty easy to achieve too, as you gain more than enough tokens without having to do all the secret photos or even perfecting those horrid drone challenges. All in all I really enjoyed Spiderman, it’s probably tied for my game of the year so far in 2018 alongside God of War which I loved. I really look forward to see what Insomniac Games does next.

I've not made it a secret I'm a fan of Open-Worlds in other reviews, not on par with Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda Breath Of The Wild or GTA 5 its more in the vein of Ghost Recon Wildlands and Just Cause 3. Purchased this edition from Game, mainly for the Steelbook, you get the usual Mini Art-Book, Sticker and a few costumes (Iron Spidey-Suit!)I'll admit I struggled with the swinging at first but seem to of gotten the hang of it, the combat is a little too frantic for my liking but take out the guys with guns first and use your Web-Bombs, I am quite fond of the Stealth bit's as I love stringing up unsuspecting Demons in Web's and sticking them to walls, the reason I'm not good at Fighting games is I can't do the Combos so I'm pretty much just button mashing, keep dodging!I haven't done too many Side-Missions, a few if not most of the Main Missions have "Big Triple AAA Game" moments which I won't ruin, the voice acting and I'm assuming motion-capture are both excellent, its that good the performances make you care about the characters, no cheesiness whatsoever...yet. For a Game this big the detail is staggering and the fact it runs seamlessly must surely catapult Insomniac up the league table of decent Game Developers.Other people may see it as filler but if the world is well enough realised (Insomniacs New York really is beautiful) then I enjoy traversing through it collecting little Black Cats at burglary's, Rucksacks webbed to the side of buildings, under bridges and the top of skyscrapers, taking pictures of Landmarks and missions involving the Green Goblins son but I haven't done any of them yet, also there are Far Cry like Osborne Cell Towers throughout the world which open up the map and reveal collectibles.Graphics are brilliant, better then they have any right of being in a world this big, the world is sprawling, bright and colourful with loads of things to do, gameplay is fun and overall this is a very good game, its a shame Tomb Raider is out tomorrow as I will probably start playing that, highly recommended but I wouldn't pay more than £60.Edit-The facial recognition, small twitches and nuances in the performances are incredible. This game is 2 years old and still looks and plays incredibly. Possibly because it has Marvel in the title I initially didn’t hold this title in the same regard as Horizon Zero Dawn, God Of War, Death Stranding and the newer breathtaking TLOU2 and Ghost Of Tsushima but Spider-Man truly deserves equal acclaim.New York is breathtaking and much like Arkham Asylum made you feel like the Batman, plummeting thousands of feet and swooshing between skyscapers acrobatically makes you feel like Spider-Man. And as soon as the web-slinging begins the rumble of the music build to a heroic crescendo. Planes fly overhead, birds flutter in the sky, radio stations acknowledge your actions and pedestrians either encourage or dismiss your antics. This world seriously feels alive. Highly recommended and now you get it with the DLC, must buy.Edit-Seriously didn't expect such an emotionally moving ending. Peter Parker, who goes out of his way to be heroic and help people so much that he gets evicted from his flat and can't pay his bills. Not only that, he lets his only member of family die, so that society as a whole can benefit from his thankless actions. He has every justification to be a super-villain and still play's the unassuming nice guy, brilliant game.

Spider-Man.PS4 Exclusive.Genre: Open World Action Adventure.Developer: Insomniac Games.Synopsis.23 year old Peter Parker has been Spider-Man for 8 years who’s been fighting big crime in New York City & struggling to balance his chaotic personal life & career, when Spider-Man defeats the Wilson Fisk the N.Y.P.D. can finally arrest 'The Kingpin' for years of political corruption & scandals, however taking Fisk out, Spider-Man troubles start to unravel as a new threat rises to take Fisk's place: The Demons as New York starts falling into chaos & the fate of nine million New Yorkers rests upon his shoulders.Timelord Thoughts.I'll sum up my experience playing Spider-Man very quickly,"amazing" the main storyline was simply brilliant & featured some great character arcs, plenty of drama & emotion along with some surprise twists which builds up to a heartbreaking climax which literally had me teary eyed, the voice acting is top notch & the music score which plays as you web sling across New York City gave me goosebumps. The graphics are visually impressive, crisp, clear to the smallest of details & features a huge open world map of New York along with some very impressive side quests & missions, there's backpacks to pick up, Black Cat cats to spot, crimes on the street to stop, Harry's working stations to investigate plus a assortment of various other challenges which allow you to upgrade various skills, gadgets & unlock additional Spider-Man suits Avengers Armoured, The Tobey Maguire suit & Homecoming suits are all included). The combat & web-swinging mechanics flow very smoothly & are very easy to control, within minutes you'll be web slinging across New York performing various tricks while during combat you'll jump, dodge, flip & use a variety of punches & kicks against your enemies along with various special moves & web gadgets to stick bad guys to walls, cars & sidewalks. The game takes around 20-25 hours to complete but if like me you purchased the season pass there's 3 additional DLC chapters that have been added making this game excellent value for money & there's not a whiff of any of those money grabbing microtransactions, I loved playing this game so much that I've actually went & platinum it.My only gripe & it's just a small one is the occasional dull side missions like chasing pigeons, those annoying screwball missions or those sneaky stealth sections which break up the momentum of the action, I've never been a fan of these were if your spotted it's game over, surely in this age of next generation gaming we've outgrown these type of side quests, however this is only a minor quibble for a over wise excellent game. There are two post credit scenes which are obviously setting up a sequel (please) that spins a new twist on classic villain that hints of a darker threat to come which will put Spider-Man/Peter Parker to the test both physically & emotionally.Overall, Marvel's Spider-Man makes a impressive PS4 debut & Insomniac Games have pulled out all the stops & delivered a fantastic gaming experience that is a love letter to Spidey fans, the stunning graphics & challenging varied game play makes for a fun filled open world action adventure & is one of the best games I've played in years that I have no hesitation in highly recommending to Spidey fans.

Every Spider-man game since Spider-man 2 has been compare to and failed against Activision and Treyarch's amazing title. This PS4 exclusive Spider-man, this time handled by the excellent team at Insomniac Games is possibly the first time a game in the series not only matches up but exceeds the benchmark.Instead of following any particular Spider-man movie or media version, Insomniac Games have gone with a generic version which works in their favour, not being bogged down by having to fit in with previous storylines and able to feature a huge swath of characters from villains to old friends and some who have yet to become either. The game sees Peter Parker working for Doctor Octavius after having quit the Bugle but is finding it tough paying rent and saving the city at the same time. His ex-flame Mary Jane Watson is on hand for advice and support, as is Aunt May, now working in a homeless shelter while Norman Osborne runs the city as mayor. After an early run in with Kingpin, serving as a subtle tutorial, leads to his arrest and the breakdown of his gangs, another mysterious group take to the streets, causing problems for Spidey and his friends. Unravelling the mystery of this group will lead to a few big surprises and some even bigger troubles. It's a well written story which will have you intrigued until the end, even setting things up for the possibility of DLC based add-ons without you feeling short changed. The biggest feature this new Spider-man has in its favour is the web swinging. Making your way through the city is a wondrous thing, far more than any Spider-man game before it (yes, that includes Spider-man 2). The developers have managed to create simple but nuanced system for allowing you to swing around, leap and climb with ease. It flows nicely into combat, too, as you come across street gangs and go straight from swinging to webbing up an enemy and hitting them at full force in one seamless action.Combat feels like a more refined version of the Batman Arkham games, a compliment indeed, with web based moves and close quarters combat seamlessly mixed with stealth attacks. The camera does a good job of keeping up for the most part, though occasional hiccups are expected in a game where you're just as likely to spend half your time upside down or clinging to a wall. The wealth of side-quests is so good that it's often distracting from completing the main story as you come across another rucksack, drugs deal or bomb chase while swinging towards your goal. Yes, there are also towers, this time in the form of police radios, but the city is pretty much unlocked from the start and they just provide more detail on the side quests available in each region when you find and fix them. With some great visuals, many of which have already found their way online thanks to the photo mode and Playstation sharing, excellent web-swinging and a great story, there's only one word to describe Spider-man: Amazing.

Over the last 12 months or so we’ve had some belting PS4 exclusive games to feast on, and Spider-man arrived with such fanfare I feared that it may come as a disappointment. Too much hype for the game to live up to maybe? I even waited until two weeks after launch to read user reviews before buying it, but I am so pleased that I did. I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly.Although I’m normally a driving and sports gamer, dipping in and out of GT Sport and Isle of Man mainly, in the last year I’ve also played and completed some serious open world games. Horizon and it’s Frozen Wilds expansion, God of War, Rise of the Tomb Raider and most recently Batman Arkham Knight. There’s an awful lot of hours of quality game play in those titles, and jumping straight from Batman to Spider-man offered a great comparison between how super-hero games should be done. When done well they’re a delight, but it doesn’t take many flaws to see the criticisms come flooding in. Fortunately, the developers have given us not only a wonderful game but a love letter to Marvel’s Spider-verse.The main story develops well from an early battle with Kingpin, taking in most of Spider-man’s illustrious gallery of rogues, which kept me interested from start to finish. There are also large handfuls of side missions, tasks and collectibles to fill out the game and give you reason to explore the environment to its boundaries. There have been some criticism that the game is too short, which is a subjective point of view. I finished the game to 100% completion 16 days after buying it, the Platinum trophy dropping after approximately 30 hours of play (I’m guessing, it could be a few hours either side). When you work 8-5 and have a life outside of gaming frankly I struggle to devote more time than that to a single game, certainly not without my wife noticing! To me the length of the game was spot on. Mopping up the outstanding crime factions at the end of the game was verging on becoming repetitive and laborious so it didn’t need to be any longer. While Batman was a wonderful game, you never really admired the graphics as Gotham is always portrayed at night, however Spider-man is set in a gloriously represented and bustling New York city with so much to explore at your leisure. When I finished the game, after the credits, the game returns you into Spider-man’s control perched on top of the Empire State Building. The city had returned to peace and I had the opportunity just to sit there admiring the view and the sunset across the island. It really is a beautiful game to look at.I feel a bit of an empty void in my gaming life for the next few weeks until Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out. Spider-man had enriched it for the last couple of weeks and I’m disappointed it’s over, but have no regrets in buying it. I hope there are more Marvel based games to come off of the back of this magnificent, Amazing Spider-man.

One of the best games I've played in the past 28 years, I started this generation with ps4, changed to xbox X, and now I'm back to ps4 and this game is one of the reasons why.The game is great, but not as good as Arkham city or Arkham knight, those games had more variety and inventive gameplay and bosses. Even the batmobile missions made It more varied.I love the open world, graphics are amazing on the Pro, HDR is beautiful, lots of details. The best is the writing, direction, voice acting, and smoothness of combat, all the gadgets, suits, upgrades. Also loadings are very fast. Also I love that there's a perfect balance between gameplay and cutscenes, I believe videogames should never have more than 5% dedicated to cutscenes, that's why I disliked witcher 3, as 30-40% is just cutscenes.Games are meant to be played, while still telling a good story. Sony understands this, hence Last of us, god of war, uncharted, killzone, horizon, etcThe game is definitely flawed, for all the greatness it has, it has boring repetitive side stuff to do that feels like a grind, the side missions, the crimes, the challenges, all boils down to repetitive combat and not much variation, not much thought. This happens also in witcher 3, assassins creed games, etc They fill the game with pointless boring stuff just so they can claim the game to be huge. This is a mistake, people prefer a 30hour great engaging game, rather than a 60 hour game that only has 20 hours of fun engaging moments. No one is happy to go collect backpacks and pursue pigeons and stuff littered in the world, and the side missions should be memorable and meaningful. I used to like the towers to unlock the map, back in assassins creed 2, far cry 4, but now is just the same, boring, the only game that did something different and exciting with that was Horizon zero dawn. Also the main bosses lack variety, batman was better with the bosses.Worse of all is the missions with MJ and Miles, those are far too linear, with no room to think out of the box, you have no choice but to move forward and press triangle on the glowing things. There was the mission in the museum with the puzzle, so at first I thought it was a great idea, but that was the only time, there are no more puzzles or anything to solve. Those missions felt like padding and takes you out of the immersion of being spiderman.PS - I also made the huge mistake of wasting money on the 3 DLCs, they're just more combat, more go here fight these guys, go there fight those guys and the same boring side missions which is the same again, more combat.DLcs should have been more different than the main game, you should be playing as the blackcat for example like in Batman where the DLC you play as catwoman. In the end the DLCs is just more of what you did a hundred times already in the main game, I think Ill skip part 2 and 3 of the DLCs.

I've just finished the main story and most of the side-missions, so I think I'm in a good position to review it.First of all, graphics. There was some controversy that the graphics may have been downgraded but I do not see any evidence of this from playing the game. My only qualm is the framerate isn't 60fps but the graphics are still amazing and I was really impressed that all of the suits looked so good and appeared in the cutscenes. The meat of the game is the gameplay. The webswinging is amazing and something that we all anticipated with bated breath. I was worried they'd screw it up yet again but this is by far the best webswinging experience ever, including being better than the fabled Spider-Man 2 on the PS2.This game really blows that one away in every aspect, especially gameplay. I found the webswinging easy to pick up and fun to master, providing plenty of versatility and options for traversing the city. Combat and web-based gadgets are also quite engaging, varied and fun. One qualm I do however have is with the special power that each suit has. It's great that you can customise suits, but I found that the Web Blossom technique outshadowed most other special powers by miles, making a lot of them redundant.I was a tad disappointed at the suits we can unlock. There are quite a few but most of them I am unfamiliar with and I think most players would be expecting to see the Symbiote suit in there, but it's not and a couple of the suits do look similar to it but it's one absence I did note. The sneaking missions were also a bit hit-and-miss but fortunately they do not take long and are a tiny portion of the game. The story is the strangest part of the game, and not necessarily in a bad way. The game is much slower paced for the first 60% or so and then rapidly intensifies towards the end. For the first half of the game you aren't really met with many super-villians but they become far more frequent in the latter half, with Spider-Man sometimes taking on two at a time. Again this is not a bad thing as most of the villains will be familiar to even casual players, making their attacks predictable, but with two villains simultaneously this makes the encounters feel fresh and challenging. The only downside is some villains do not get as much exposure as they deserve, and one villain in particular gets a bit too much exposure whom I had not even heard of before this game.To sum it up, I bought the game for £45 on release day from HMV and it was well-worth the purchase in a year that has been a mixed bag of games. As the price goes down I'd definitely recommend it to even casual players as you don't need to know much about Spider-Man to get to grips with the game.

I am going to try to keep this review spoiler free, but there may be some minor details here and therere so read at your own peril. For a large portion of my childhood I lived and breathed Spider-Man. He was my favourite, you couldn’t go wrong with him in my eyes. I watched and played everything he’s been in. But since the beginning of the 2010’s my love for him has diminished. I no longer had any love for my most beloved childhood hero...then summer of 2018 Spider-Man on PS4 arrives. This was one of them moments where if I met the creative director and said “what? Create a Spider-Man game that is both an original story, but kept the core of the characters?Never” and Brian Intihar just responds “hold my beer”.The story had the same challenges as Tobey McGuire's Spider-Man. After 8 years of being your friendly neighbourhood webhead. He’s still trying to balance a normal life, between paying rent, helping aunt may and still holding the responsibility of Spider-Man. The studios have taken into account that Spider-Man’s origin story is so well known and his origins have been retold several times that we don’t need our hands held and gets us right into the day of the life. The mechanics of combat kept to the Arkham series of counter, strike and gadgets and move specific directions. Which is not a bad thing because Insomniac have tailored that formula to the Spider-Man we all know and love. Instead of counter it’s dodge using his spidey sense, and instead of smoke bombs bat grapples it is variants of webbing and web traps. Entertaining none the less. The graphics are never the point to a game for me, as it has always been about story, engagement and entertainment, but the visuals are incredible. I feel I never have to pay thousands to visit New York, because it is right here. Everything is stunning. Inside of some building windows are similar which is nit picking but you’ll be too busy swinging webs and fighting villains you will not let that begrudge the game. The Open World is stunning with so many side missions and tasks, that I did not have time to do the main story for two days. Like bag collecting, photo shooting, Oscorp projects etc. Some people have said some of these side quests are tedious. Well clearly they have not played the game right because I saw it as an opportunity to swing between rooftops like a maniac. Superb.I can go on for days about this game. But all and all it is the perfect Spider-Man story that we need. Starting, playing and finishing this this game has certainly rekindled my love for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. I thank insomniac from the bottom of my heart, for reigniting the 10 year old inside me, and being my favourite marvel hero.

Well, well, well...... after the disappointment of RDR2 and calling it a day through boredom mid way through chapter 2 I switched my attention to everyone's favourite nieghbourhood spiderman, and I'm really pleasantly surprised at just how good this game is, most importantly it is fun with a capital F, the polar opposite of RDR2's snoozefest.Pros:-Fun factor. Did I mention this game is FUN, like really fun. It's enjoyable to look at, to play, to listen to, everything is just well balanced for a overall fun experience.Spider suits. If you were expecting the suits to be just re-skins of the character you'd be wrong. Each of the collectible suits has strengths/weaknesses and a special ability as well as altering the look of spidey. The play area.Big enough to offer plenty to see and do but traversing around the city is fun in itself (again the opposite of RDR2).Controls. After 30 or so minutes play time the web swinging mechanic feels natural and also fun, as well as being easily controlled. Menu control is excellent and fuss free.Graphics. Nice, colourful and interesting. The enviroment is well rendered no noticable lag and besides minor and very infrequent loading screens the whole play area is seemless and fluid. In game animation of spidey is perfect.Collectibles. I enjoyed this more than I expected. None of them are difficult but you get the "I'll just find these last 5 backpacks before I call it a night" type compulsion.Price. Now available for under 30 quid, this is well worth the money if you haven't already bought it.Cons:-Cut Scene animation. In my opinion is servicable but certainly nothing special when compared to many other titles. These are usually short enough affairs that it doesn't really affect anything so I've not dropped it any stars for this.Moves/Powers. There are so many different moves/powers/combos that when you get engaged with a big group of enemies you can quite easily revert to button mashing, not a problem on the easier difficulties but harder levels can see you get wiped out by even small thug activities. Remain focused and move around a lot. With great power comes great responsibility.Story is a little short, however there is loads to see and do between the story, side missions, collectibles, thug attacks etc.One of my favourite games of recent years, and probably the best superhero game so far. I'd love to see a sequel to this and also a TMNT game by these guys (Rocksteady - of Batman fame - were rumoured to be doing one but that's all gone quiet).A solid 5 star outing for the webhead. One of the best games of 2018 for sure.

Before I review this game, I should pont out that amazon's courier messed the order up and dropped the game through the letterbox of another house (which isnt even attached to my house). fortunately said resident was kind enough to give me the game at a later date but amazon did nothing to follow up the query I left with them.So to the game, this is quite possibly the best spider-man game I have every played (and I have played them all since the ps2 game of the original sam raimi film). the combat system felt like a dynamic mix of the arkham games crossed with assassins creed with a hint of ratchet and clank thrown in (not surprising considering Insomniac developed the R&C) franchise). The main storyline felt more fun to go through than all the live action films and most of the cartoon adaptions of spider-man. Like previous insomniac games, the main and supporting cast felt relatable and soundtrack/voicecasting suited the gameSo, why hasnt this game gotten 5/5? well there are a few reasosn for this:1) too many side-missions which felt repetitive2)for an insomniac game, it is a surprise that a challenge mode wasnt part of the core game and in fact is part of the dlc3) the story felt too short. - I played the game on spectacular (hardest) difficulty and despite completing all the side quests before the story, it took ~32 hours to complete with platinum trophy (or 8 hours a day over 4 days). There was far more side missions than there was story and if you are a completionist who prefers to finish the extra stuff 1st, then this feels a bit disjointed. without the side-missions, the game can easily be completed within 20 hours on spectacular dificulty with cutscenes.4) You cannot skip / fast forward cutscenes - something of a hassle for speedrunners but not something I am fussed about5)whilst satisfactory, the story felt a bit safe (without spoiling too much) and the potential sequel will have to be on top form to surpass this game.Overall, it is a great game to play but isnt one with a lot of playback value. After you finish playing it once, you have literally nothing to do. My advice is to wait for all the dlcs to be released and then purchase a physical copy that has the dlcs as a part of the game. that way, you have more to do and if your not satisfied, you can always return the game (unlike download copies which void return policies as soon as you play it)

With over 180 reviews already posted on Amazon for Marvel’s Spider-man I may be just repeating what others have said already, but I hope this is helpful for those thinking about buying the game.PS4’s Spider-man must be one of the most faithful representations of a super-hero in a video game ever. The graphics are astounding. Smooth, detailed and completely devoid of glitching that plagues so many so called AAA games. Swinging through the city-scape never gets boring and you feel immersed in the environment at a depth that other AAA games just can’t manage. The sound is simply fantastic. Stick a set of good headphones on and listen to the web ‘casting’ noises, the thump as punches land on enemies and allow the various explosions, sirens, traffic and pedestrian chatter to fill your head. The voice acting is excellent from start to finish and the music score is well put together.Game play sees you opening up one area of a large map after another. You can follow the story missions religiously, or do your own thing for a while answering calls for assistance at robberies, muggings, stolen cars, drug deals and car crashes where in each case you must tackle a number of enemies or save persons in distress. Such is the variety, it never gets tiring. You can also unlock official side quests as you progress through the game which you can choose to do immediately or at any time that suits you. There are puzzle elements to the game and more collectables than you can shake a stick at - all of which provides points to spend on gadgets and the like. The fluidity of combat in a game like this is essential, and boy did the developers nail it. It’s slick, responsive and intuitive. I don’t agree with some You-Tubers who claim that all enemies can be killed by mashing 2 buttons, that’s utter rubbish. There are a huge number of moves, combos, special tactics and web slinging take-downs that can be used by the player and to succeed against a mob you need to be clever and resourceful in how you fight. It’s absolutely brilliant and more importantly, it’s fun.The game offers progression in the form of new suits with different special qualities, new moves, gadgets/weapons and skills which keeps things interesting throughout the story and beyond. This game is a blast to play and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) is a great game!I loved being able to take control of everyone's favourite web head and explore Manhattan. When you insert the disk, you can expect a 50GB update so be prepared to wait a little time to play. The menu screen is simple and easy to use, nothing too exiting on it.The web swinging mechanics are the best I've seen in a Spider-Man game to date. It is accurate not letting you attach to thin air and requiring you to have a surface to attach to.The fighting in the game is decent, but can be very much button mashing exercise. be prepared to press the square button a lot should you get into a fight with many enemies. everything is down to timing tho,as you will press the circle button to evade incoming attacks. some enemies in the game might require a more tactical approach as based on their stature or weapon they can block, or are immune to, certain attacks. the only other variety of enemies are bosses, which you may recognise from films, other games and comics. The main story for the game is enjoyable, but just as it feels as its coming together it comes to an end. I feel the build up to some of the enemy's was disappointing. Such as Vulture, I fought with him no more than 3 times in the whole game. feels like a missed opportunity.During the story there are opportunities to play as Miles Morales (as a regular person, although hints at him becoming Spider-Man in either a Sequel or a piece of Downloadable Content) and Mary Jane Watson. The side missions in the game are very repetitive, with crime prevention and base shut down against 4 different factions. Research stations have some variety, but there is definitely an underlying feeling of copy paste mission types. There are 27 different suits to unlock in the game (1 of which is for 100% completion)There are 8 different Gadgets, mostly revolving around web abilities. These can all be upgraded to improved versions. There are 3 major skill areas; Innovator (12 skills), Defender (11 skills) & Webslinger (11 skills)I would estimate around 15 - 20 hours of playtime in this game, although the story could probably be done in under 10 hours.Id recommend the game, but not sure if its worth the asking price. just feels like its lacking some content.

I've taken my time to write a review of Spider-Man. I completed the game a few weeks ago and have been mulling it over since.I had very high hopes for this game during its build up. Like many, I had great memories of the classic Spider-Man games on the older playstation consoles and really wanted this to live up to that. I was so relieved when it did and then some!Played on a PS4 Pro through a 4K HDR TV, the game is stunning to look at. The cityscape is breathtaking, particularly at sunset, and swinging your way through it's buildings, parks and skyscrapers is a joy to behold. Frame rate is solid, no noticeable dips on my playthrough, even with a lot going on on-screen.Gameplay-wise,it does follow most other modern-day 3rd person action games. If you've played Assassin's Creed, any of the Arkham games, Shadow of Mordor or Horizon Zero Dawn - you'll slip straight into it. It combines the elements we've come to expect but does so in an engaging way. At first, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of icons on my mini map, indicating the vast number of collectibles, side quests and other bits and pieces to investigate. However, I never got the same sense of 'chore' that often happens in those situations. I think this is primarily because the game navigation and combat is SO GOOD. I didn't use the fast travel system in the game to get anywhere; swinging around Manhatten and watching Spider-Man effortlessly navigate anything that gets in his way is fantastic to behold. It's fun in of itself. Coupled with a similar combat style to the Arkham games; one based on counters, fluidity, gadgets and finishing moves - nothing felt like busy-work.Sure some of the random crimes get a little repetitive at times, especially if you're looking to 100% it (it's actually my first platinum trophy and apparently one of the easier games to 100%), but there's enough variance and distraction to keep you going. Each crime has a series of challenges to max your score, for example. All of the collectables add up to allow gadget, gear and suit unlocks - some of which are very cool.I'm in the midst of Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment but once I'm done roaming the wild west, I'll be straight back to New York, with the DLC packs in hand :D
