After my Megadrive review it was evident many were fans of Sonic and the franchise, so here is a review of 4 Sonic games on 1 cartridge.Sonic classic collection was released on the 2nd March 2010 and features Sonic 1 to 3, Sonic and knuckles. What I should point at this point is that this collection really adds nothing special and new, its just the games, a few pictures and thats it.But if thats all your looking for then let us move on......For any Sonic fans, most will agree that the games featured on the catridge are the best of the Sonic series. But those who are new to Sonic may want to know that the games revolve around you controlling a very speedy hedghog and flying through levels, filled with gold rings to collect and obstacles to avoid. I'll give a short rundown of the 4 games below, it is primarily a 2D side scrolling platform game.Sonic the hedgehog is the origional title, released in 1991 and featured stunning 16 bit graphics, which are ported over directly to the DS from the Genesis with very little loss. The game involves you speeding through six areas each with 3 acts, In Sonic 1 you are trying to stop the main antagonist of the game Dr Robotnik from getting the six chaos emeralds and bringing destruction to the world, with every end level of the act seeing you try and beat the DR in his rather funny Eggmobile.Sonics main ability is running, but he can also jump and roll which comes in handy when your faced with a plethora of loops and ramps throughout the levels. The story never holds up much for me in Sonic, it's more about the speed and action which entices me. This doesn't mean it wont keep you intrested as the game will definatley have you on the edge of the seat.Graphically the game used very vivid colours to attract attention to it, but everything is easy to see even at pace. The world is full of green grass and palmtrees, with a cool sea background which really suited the game.Control wise it is extremely simple to pick up and play , being one of the reasons it is so popular, it mainly comes down to your ability to react to whats on screen more than anything else.Sonic the hedghog 2 is the sequel and came 1 year after the origional title.Much of the previous information widely applies here too , but the game did bring a few new peices.Firstly we met Tails, Tails is a fox and mechanic with 2 tails. He is Sonic's sidekick and able to use his 2 tails to hover in the air like a helicopter for a few seconds.Secondly the story is slightly different, in this title Sonic and Tails must stop Dr Robotnik from stealing the Emeralds which would power his new weapon, the death egg. Not only this but Sonic's freinds are captured and so it's his and tails job to save them. The game levels were upped to 11 zones bringing new areas to both explore and defeat, this both increased the longevity and made it a little more intresting.Sonic also has a new move named "spin dash", this made him spin at high speed before moving off in a certain direction at even faster speeds. There was the option to play as either Sonic or Tails, this added a bit more variety and difficulty as Tails wasn't as strong as Sonic. But the biggest addition in this title has to be the entrance of Super Sonic, by collecting all the Emeralds Sonic would turn a yellow colour. Following this he would become enhanced in every way as well as being invincible, however this increase made jumps incredibly difficult so you had to be very skilled in timing the movement.Sonic 3 was released in 1994, carrying on the story from Sonic 2.After defeating Dr Robotnik, Sonic lands on a strange floating island. Unfortunatley it's not "The Island" which would of been much more intresting. But anyway, crashing on this island we meet a new character called Knuckles and a new drama to evade.Knuckles is a strange character as he is both a good and bad guy in the series, whilst very similar to Sonic in all aspects he can also glide and climb walls. He was also red which to me meant he was way cooler than the other characters.Sonic must retrieve the Chaos Emeralds and stop Dr Robotnik from using his new weapon the Death Egg. Now Sega , using the storyling once is fine, using it twice is a bit annoying but OK, but a third time used and I think you need to hire some new writers. The game let you play as Sonic or Tails, but also allowed the one not controlled to be AI and follow behind doing not very much. The levels were worked on heavily, not only did they feel darker with more atmosphere but they were also 3 times the size of previous games, this meant the levels could improve the platforming elements and make the game more difficult. Although these were cut back to 6 zones due to their size, but they were connected more than older games through the use of cut scenes. And so the final game of the collection , Sonic and Knuckles, which was released late 1994 and followed on from events in Sonic 3.This game has 2 different story's first Sonics then Knuckles , this was a nice change and meant you could experience something different in the Sonic world. However , guess the storyline for a fresh baked cookie. After landing on an island Sonic see's that the place is rife with Emeralds and sets off to stop Dr Robotnik from relaunching his Death egg. Yaaaawwnnn. To be honest I was brutally disappointed by the fact that Knuckles story isn't so much a story as an alternate ending. There are new levels , although these feel pretty similar to the old games just with a new design. On top of this there is no real push to improve the graphics which considering it's been 4 games I am surprised their is no difference.Tails is no longer a playable character in the game which was also a bit dissapointing as I quite like him. This was by far the weakest title and feels a little un-needed.So in total, the game really is for those looking for a bit of nostalgia. As a collection it offers nothing exciting or better to newcomers and supplies around 15 hours gametime to fully complete.Whilst it was fun , it would have been nice for it to be released as a worked on version with better graphics and improved sound.

As ironic as it may seem, it was this compilation of old-school gems that convinced me to buy a DS in the first place. I have played all those Sonic games to death back in the Megadrive days, and it was really a sheer pleasure to enjoy them again on the iconic Nintendo handheld. The games are virtually inchanged from their Megadrive versions, including even some endearing glitches present in those. This is solid 2D 16-bit-era platforming at its best, with top-notch controls, vibrant colours, amazing musical themes and the overall sense of breathtaking speed, sheer pleasure and giddy enjoyment that pervades and defines the Sonic universe. The whole point here is to play those classic games as they were back in the 90's; thus, there are no embellishment or graphic make-up to be found. The main innovation is the inclusion of a save feature, which only serves to enhance the gaming experience by allowing the player to enjoy the games at a more relaxed pace and avoid replaying the first levels over and over. The real cherry on the cake in this collection is that not only you can play the four classic Megadrive Sonic games as specified on the box, but you can also enjoy the combinations of Sonic&Knuckles with Sonic 3 and Sonic 2. These combinations have been fairly difficult to find after the Megadrive days were over, and their inclusion on this cartridge definitely makes this compilation effort a brilliant and successful one.As a whole, this game is a gold nugget, compiling the rather glorious beginnings of Sonic the Hedgehog, which also happen to be some of the finest platforming moments ever. Depending on how old the player is, it will be a lovely trip down memory lane or a pleasant and formative introduction to the Sonic universe. At any rate, it is certainly a good step to take before moving on to the DS exclusive Sonic games. A must-have for any platform lover, old and young!

Im not a console owner, and lost interest in video games years ago - but Sonic The Hedgehog was one of the most important things to me growing up in the early 90s.Sonic 2 is the greatest game I have ever played and have sent 100s of hours playing it over the years.I picked this collection up to play on my sisters DS and I was very happy with it.All the conversions are excellent. I noticed no slow down, the games look and play as I remember, and all I really noticed was a few missing sound effects.SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - Where it all began. A classic. Good looking, playable and with great music. A bit of a slower paced game than I remember, and the spin dash is badly missed.SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 - My favourite game ever.Gorgeous looking for its time, great levels, music and replayability. Just perfectionSONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 - Some amazing music in this, a great game with my favourite bonus stages in the series and a few minor additions to the classic game play.SONIC AND KNUCKLES - My least favourite of the series. Some frustrating levels that dont quite fit the sonic mould - feels like they were running out of ideas with cliched 'lava' and 'desert' levelsSONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES - this is the biggest and most satisfying way to play these two games. where-as S3 and SAK feel lacking, this is a large satisfying game.SONIC 2 AND KNUCKLES - Its Sonic 2 with Knuckles. This collection has an unintrusive save feature - click save or load at any time, but whether you save it half way through the level, it will always return you to the start of act one. To me, this is fair.A GREAT collection, and to my knowledge, one of the few collections to feature 'Sonic 3 And Knuckles.'

Sega's newest Sonic Collection is here, and I can happly say this is great for the DS. While the Collection says there's 4 games, the actual total is 6 games with the extra two being the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-Ons. So your getting more for your cash.Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles In Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles all are within this Collection, and all are near perfect ports of the originals. Each run great with solid controls and sound quality is fantastic for the DS. With these ports being near perfect, there are only very few minor things to point out. Slowdown does pop up at points, but it's only minor and won't ruin the experience. The 2 player from Sonic 2 and 3 has been removed, and the options mode from Sonic 2 is gone. Sorry debug mode fans.Being this is a Sonic Collection, you would expect tons of extras like profiles, history of the series and others. But your not going to find anything like that this time around. The only extra in this Collection is about 28 pictures of classic Sonic artwork. Long time fans will have already seen these and will see no point in going back to look at them. New fans may find some intrest for a short while. It's clear the extras was not the main focus here. The Collection's main focus is to run the 6 games you probably want to buy it for, and it delivers with near perfect success. The extras are lacking, but as a Collection to play all the original Mega Drive Sonic games, it's brilliant. Those who want to take these legendary games on the go, I highly recommend this Collection.

The game is great fun. Being on the DS means that people who were unfortunate enough to miss the heyday of Sonic games means that even the youngest of today's gamers can enjoy what we loved (and still do, in my case) all those years ago, when all this was new. Also, for a long time I have dreamed of playing my favourite games while on the move, or generally in a place where I can't bring my console and television, and this rises to the challenge quite spectacularly. The games you get here:Sonic the HedgehogSonic the Hedgehog 2Sonic the Hedgehog 3Sonic & KnucklesKnuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & KnucklesOwning both a DSLite and a 3DS, I have to say that it does make a difference what you play this game on.Playing it on a DS means you will find that the framerate drops considerably when playing through the game. Yyou will notice it, and it will in return affect what the games are all about - the speed and excitement of it all. However, the 3DS, with its improved performance over the DS, plays the game with next to no framerate droppage, giving you near enough the true experience the original games gave us.The framerate issues on the DS is the only reason this product didn't get a 5* perfect review from me. 3DS owners will find themselves better off playing this game over someone playing this on any DS model.

I've been playing games for over 20 years and these four Sonic games are as hard as nails and I highly recommend that you save your game after you have completed each level. I have Sonic Rush Adventure which is alot easier to play then these four classic games and I also find the boss battles are pretty tough too. I found the speed of the Sonic games to run at a decent speed and not that much slower then the old Mega Drive versions. The graphics have aged well and the music is very catchy too. These Sonic games are well thought out platform games with great hidden items/routes and are not just about speed. I find the Mario games easier and are overall more fun to play but,I have been playing the Mario games since the NES days. It's great to have these four classic Sonic games because I never owned a Mega Drive and only played them a little bit on a friends console before. Overall this package is excellent value for money if you think your gaming skills are up to the hard but mostly enjoyable challenge.

I ordered this game because a) I really wanted it, and b) because I couldn't find it anywhere else. I tried roughly 7-8 different places to see if they had this game. No where did, they were all sold out. I'd never bought anything off of Amazon before, so I was a little nervous of the whole thing. But it was so simple to order the game, to imput my details, and that's it, done. The game arrived two days after I ordered it, I thought it would take much longer. I opened the envelope and was so pleased with the quality. Brand new, still in the plastic, shiny and dazzling. The game itself is just as amazing as I remembered it to be. I used to have Sonic 1 and 2 on Sega Megasystem, and when I heard that it was available on DS I was so excited. And it didn't disappoint. The old-school graphics are just as colourful as I remember, the controls are easy, the gameplay as exciting as the first time. Though, I was better at the game when I was eight. lol

My 7 year old asked for this game as one of his birthday presents and I was a bit dubious about purchasing it as I had just purchased Sonic Rush and although thought the graphics were very good felt the game play was spoilt by having to 'rush' round everywhere on the levels. I thought this game would be the same.I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a much more thoughtful game than that and although of course you can rush about it you want to you do have to stop and pause and figure out how you are going to get past a certain baddie or difficult part of the game and I actually quite enjoy playing it with my son.We have only played the first game Sonic the Hedgehog so don't know what the other's are like. The graphics aren't amazing but I would rather have good game play than anything else.I would recommend this over Sonic Rush which to me was unplayable because of the pure speed it makes you go at.

This was bought for a 5 year old, who is a fan of Sonic The Hedghog. Games are bit hard for 5yo to play, but she still likes them.Games included: Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. As per title, it is not so obvious how to start the games. If you press Start button on a screen, or click on a game image, it will start in Demo mode, so the Sonic will be running but you won't control it. This was very upsetting for a little girl. It took some time to find a solution on some forums, as apparently a lot of people a confused, why Start button does not actually start a game. Now, if you are one of those, here's the solution: you need to hit Start button on DS itself, the one next to Home, and do it quick several times, to have the game started in normal "game" mode. I am not sure if it's a bug, or the first puzzle you need to solve ^_^.Hope this helps!

This sonic game is amazing it reminds me of the classic sonic of the good old days back on the saga mega drive in the early 90s it’s almost identical and to see it again after 20+ years it brings back some memories and the graphics are pretty good too I highly recommend this game for anyone looking for hours of good gaming and anyone who remembers the classic sonic buy this and you’ll love it I so glad I did one tip though it’s hard to understand how to start the game when you first play it and it’s worth while me telling you you have to press load first to get game play started its a fantastic game it really is ?

I am writing this on behalf of my 7 year old girl, since I have never played it myself. She is not a game addict nor a very demanding nor experienced player, but likes her DS games with cute characters and some action (Mario games are a big favorite) - it not so easy to find good action games which are appropriate for her age and not "overly boyish", so I gave this a try and I bought it a few weeks ago: she has been playing every now and then ever since, it is challenging enough to keep her interested, but not frustrating. She is happy with it, I am happy with it!

Seeing as sonic 4 is coming out soon I thought this would be the perfect thing to buy to catch up on the storyline so far, i thought there would be great game art, and a few extras, but all i got was 6 games all of which were extremely good, but it was the game art that really let it down, i expected more than some pictures that i had already seen, but overall it was a brilliant buy.

I bought this game because I enjoyed the old Sonic games on the megadrive. The game works well on the DS format and a whole new generation of kids are playing these classic games again. The graphics are colourful and bright and the gameplay fast and addictive, although frustratingly hard at times! The music is as fun and fresh as it was back in the day. A great set of games for DS.

Remembered this game when it was on the Sega Megadrive and was excited to see it now on DS. Took a while to get started with the game as it wasn't clear you have to press the start button to begin playing. Once this was overcome there was no stopping us. All the family love it, even my 5 and 6 year old daughters can't put it down and love playing it. Thoroughly recommend to anyone.
