If Sonic Colours for the Wii bears gameplay similarities to Sonic Unleashed then it's DS companion may as well be a continuation of the Sonic Rush series. The original Sonic Rush was a largely excellant example of speed based gameplay, augmented with a trick system that gave the player controlled speed boosts. It's sequel, Rush Adventure bogged down the gameplay with adventure sections. Has Colours managed to revitilise the formula?First impressions are surprisingly dissapointing. The trick system in the Rush which gave boost has been replaced with a wisp that gives limited boost, only increased with more wisps and enemy destruction. This means that boost functions are often too limited so crashing into enemies on running paths due to lack of boost can become common place.Wisps, the obvious gimmik of the game are a mixed bag. The large majority are well implemented with the drill and lazer being the most fun, the first offering some creative routes via ground and water, the latter offering quick bursts of unstoppable speed. The two main culprits of bad design are the Red Burst and Violet Void wisps which both suffer from unresponsive control which is a shame because they offer intriquing directions to take in the environment.Cheap defeats and damage are also a running problem, as mentioned earlier. Pit falls, bad enemy placement and spike placement have always been around in some form or another in the Sonic series but Sonic Colours often takes it too far. This is partly due to the multi-tiered levels generated by the wisp mechanic as well as temptations to boost through the air, leading to multiple deaths. The game seems to expect you to know what's happening ahead of you before you can respond to it. The slide feature is often placed in situations where you need to use it to avoid instant death but it's used so sparingly and with little warning that you'll be killed on the spot. The large amount of the negative critisism on Sonic Colours DS is most apparent on the first playthough. Repeated playthrough gives you time to appreiciate how well many of the levels have been crafted around the wisps. As you aquire new wisp powerups new areas in previous stages become available, opening up some creative game mechanics and generally increasing the flow of gamplay. Once you get to grips with the mechanics of the wisps, going back to some stages can produce utterly joyful experiences. Boosting through several enemies, walljumping off walls to grabbing a Lazer wisp and using it to bounce across a level is exilerating. The game is also short, with the chaos emeralds being remarkably easy to obtain. Completionists will find replay value in the collection of red rings and added missions, the latter offering some surprisingly challenging objectives.Overall Sonic Colours (DS) is a flawed but generally fun product. It boasts an interesting new gameplay mechanic via the addition of wisps but is let down by control issues, cheap deaths and some unneeded mechanics.

Sonic Colours on DS is Sonic's best DS game to date. It takes the Sonic Rush gameplay and adds even more fun to it with lots more platforming and new power ups without losing that high speed. The story is similar to the Wii version. Dr. Eggman has created a giant Theme Park in space as a remorse for his past evil deeds over the years. Sonic of course doesn't buy it and heads to the theme park with Tails to investigate. The DS version does have its own twist to the story by adding other Sonic characters in optional missions. It's a simple plot that works. The gameplay is much like Sonic Rush. You'll be speeding through stages to make it to the end as you would in a 2D Sonic game. This time it adds new features to make it feel like its own game. Gone is the trick system from previous Sonic Rush games, but there's a lot more new features in its place. The Wisp power ups are the highlight of the new features and they are great fun to use. There are 6 different Wisps to use, with 2 of them being exclusive to the DS version. There's the Burst Wisp that turns you into a ball of fire to blast into the sky and destroy enemies, the Drill Wisp that turns you into a Drill to dig through soft ground at high speeds, the Cyan Wisp that turns Sonic into a laser to blast at enemies and use shortcuts and more. Sonic has his boost move from Sonic Rush as well as new abilities such as the wall jump, stomp, homing attack and slide ability. The level design is the best seen in a DS Sonic game with plenty to do and lots of shortcuts to explore. The gameplay overall is very fun and very replayable. The controls work the same as Sonic Rush. It's very easy to pick up and play which is great. Those who have played the Sonic Rush games may take a while to get used to not having the trick system from Sonic Rush 1 and 2, but it doesn't take to long to adapt too.The graphics look great for a DS game. It uses the same graphical style from the Sonic Rush series with look very colourful. The cutscenes are very simple looking with character portraits and text to tell the story. There is also a few CGI cutscenes from the Wii version which look fantastic. The music is taken from the Wii version which sounds fantastic. One of the best Sonic soundtracks ever with fantastic tunes to hum to and enjoyable vocal songs. The Sonic voice cast has been changed for the series, and while you won't hear much of the characters talk with voices all the time, they sound great. The best Sonic voice cast for the series. This is the best DS Sonic game I've ever played. The gameplay is great and has superb level design along with a brilliant soundtrack. Sonic the Hedgehog is back on form. 10/10

Whenever a console game gets a handheld tie-in, if it's not largely the same, it's generally a lesser game.Sonic Colors for the DS avoids this trend and manages to stand beside its console brother as a surprisingly solid game. It's essentially Sonic Rush 4 with a handful of changes to bring it closer to the console Colors.Aside from the Wisps (of which there are handheld exclusives), the game gives Sonic a proper homing-attack to replace the smaller R-action version from previous DS games, he can now ground-pound, slide and the boost mechanic has been tweaked to behave like the console version, air-boost included (no more tricks).Unique to this version is the special stage which works similarly to Rush's with you guiding Sonic with the stylus and there are a new secret final-boss to round off the game if you complete all of them. There are also a fairly good amount of extra missions scattered about the world-map to increase replay value. The game is nicely detailed and colorful with music that, while downgraded, keeps the charm of the original tracks to give the game a nice, pleasant presentation.

I love Sonic and so does my son, so we had to have this when it was released. If you have ever played on Sonic, then you know that it has jumps, rings and loop the loops alongside, shooting fire and prickly creatures. This is no different but has even more.... Add to the above vibrant colours and the fact that you can sync and play with other ds users, it makes for a great game.My son loves the different gaming options and the small games that you can play. It really has been used non stop since christmas.

Bought this for my kids, firstly on the wii, and they enjoyed it so much that when I ordered a ds for them for christmas, I got this with it too. They have had sooooo much fun playing it! As a fan of the old Sonic and Knuckles on the sega years ago, this game is fun to me too! Has alot less 3D meandering around wondering what to do, as some of them have been. It's alot more like the old 2D platform Sonic games, but so much more! This is Sonic as he should be.... Fast, fast, fast!!

I bought this game for my 6 year old and I, my 6 year old and my 4 year old have been playing it! It is quite an addictive game and even not too difficult so that my smaller child can enjoy it too.I have never owned a Sonic game before and so this was my first exeriennce but I was impressed with the way that both my children are entertained by this game. Even with only one actual game card, both children can play it on their separate DSs. Great value!

To be perfectly honest I don't even know how to start the ds up and play the games but my son tells me this is wicked cool and won't stop playing the flipping thing. He LOVES LOVES LOVES it and I have to hide the game so he will go outside and run about 'like children are supposed to'.We paid less than £15 for the game on Amazon which was less than half the price the local game shop wanted so a brilliant deal.

This game is exiting and chlidren should like it because it is in a theme park. The only problem with the games is it's to easy on some levels but some are realy hard. I would give this to a 8 year old.

What can I say? Do NOT buy this game for children. I bought this for my eight year old, and it became his life. Oh, wait ... perhaps this is an unintended incredible positive recommendation?

My 9 year old daughter loves this game so much, she's forgotten all about Nintendogs and all the other 'little girl' games she's loved for years. Great present with lots of fast action!
