Many of the drill stands here seem to look identical with only the brand varying except one which appears the same but has a shorter column. As you can see from the stars I was impressed. It's a solid lump of metal but the instructions are inadequate to say the least. One thing that is quite important is the product comes dry without grease applied. You need to tighten the stand to reduce play but in doing so it can be annoyingly noisy. My recommendation is copper grease. I would apply some to 3 pivoting joints where the lever attaches before assembly plus a small amount to the mechanism where it splits close to the spring and at the very top only of the depth adjuster.Only apply to the column where the mechanism expands into very sparingly below. This will silence and provide a more smooth operating mechanism. One of the main benefits of this product is you can use a decent drill. Some of the entry level drill presses have quite basic induction motors where the belts need re-fitting to get different speeds. Here at least the drill you attach dictates the ease of speed changing and some other factors. I have a very old Bosch drill for the task. Bought back in about 1981 and still going strong. One rather annoying feature is the depth stop. It's just a basic bolt so you need to use the supplied hex key. Clearly this is a frequent adjustment and should be something like a wing/knob bolt not just a normal bolt.Overall great value and a solid bit of kit but a bit of grease and a change of bolt massively improves it.

There are a lot of complaints on Amazon about this, and I can understand why. This is not a top of the line product. This is a cheap drill stand. I went together fine for me, with no extra parts (the collar referred to in another review should be used as a depth stop, to prevent the drill block moving to far down the post.Other reviews are right in that, even if you assemble it correctly, there is still some lateral movement in the drill head, which you really can't get rid of (since this part comes assembled, and I don't really want to tinker with it). If you push it sideways as you move the drill down, though, you shouldn't have any problems. The bottom line, though, is that this only costs £20,and it really is worth that. However, if you are expecting this to allow you to drill multiple holes to an exactly depth reproducibly, you really need to be spending more that this. But if you want it to help you drill a few holes in bits of wood, then you'll probably be OK.

Thank you to Silverline for their compact hand drill. My particular hand drill arrived today well within the timeframe from when I place the order. The drill is sturdy, robust and with a good solid weight - perfect for handicrafts and small do it yourself tasks around the home/house, also it doesn't require electricity, only human gumption and innate know-how (I learned do it yourself tasks from my Dad when I was young and accomplishing tasks around our home and household as part of our routine chores. Mum also is good and such crafts - must be in the genes! But then, they are from a South American farming background). They say a bad workperson always blames their tools. All the drill would need is a little WD40 oil, or even vegetable oil to keep the cogs lubricated and in working order. Should outlive the electrical drill I have been using by far.All in all, a good practical and functional product, with longevity to boot!!

Well, I managed to put this thing together without too much trouble (I'm not very practically minded!)Fiddled with the various settings, nuts, depths etc and popped in my electric drill...It is perfect... For me! Hence 5 stars!I only need it for light, occasional use and right now it looks like it fulfills my requirements...If you are looking for a drill press that will drill centered holes and not looking for something that will be used daily in a professional environment then this is probably the right thing for you. The price is great and cannot fault anything at this price!Word of caution...I also bought the Silverline 292674 100 mm Drill Press Vice. It does not fit this drill press so don't bother!I should have gone for the 65mm vice but no guarantee that one will fit.

This is decent at this low price. If you do a lot of heavy drilling on metal you are better off buying a bench press drill from around £70 but this is perfectly OK for occasional light use on wood; with care you can obtain accurate results. One thing prevents a fifth star: the mild steel Allen bolt at the top of the head which is used to change height & secure it to the pillar stripped its thread on the second use so I had to buy a replacement. Apart from this minor niggle I've used it every weekend for the past 2 months & it's been fine. Worth the money.

I needed a pillar drill to cut the recesses on our new kitchen cabinet doors and thought why a pillar drill, maybe I can get a drill stand for my electric drill? I trawled the web, came to Amazon (where else can you get everything you want on the web)and found this reasonably priced drill stand. The delivery was fast and once I had screwed it down to a bench, attached my drill, added the cutter, experimented a bit, set the depth/speed and proceeded to drill the recesses. It was robust and produced perfect holes. Nice tool that did a good job.

The item would have been delivered on 7.7.2016 but I was out and picked it up this morning (9.7.2016) from the sorting office. I bought a reconditioned one and the price was unbelievably low. The item had been restored to excellent working condition. I'm so pleased because I've been looking for one of these for years, even asking friends and relatives if they had a forgotten one in their shed/garage that they hadn't got round to throwing away. Brilliant. It's my birthday tomorrow and this is my gift to myself. Well pleased ?

I'm sorry for all those 'negative' comments, I can only say that my drill arrived on time, works perfectly, almost like a Swiss watch, put it to use immediately. The chuck grips like a bull terrier and the only thing I did on arrival was to spray a little WD40 on to all moving parts, and glue the handle to the drill. My B&Q do NOT sell any type of hand drill, nor Homebase, otherwise I would have bought it there. I found one in car parts accessories store which stocked 2 types begining at £14.I recommend it.

I read a few dodgy review of this before buying this so I am leaving these comments to help anyone like me who thought they were taking a bit of punt on this. Don't worry, you're nit. It's fine. Easy to set up, well made from good materials and really simple to operate. It is not laboratory standard accurate but that's not what I needed. Perfect for me as a hobbyist trying to drill holes in metal straighter than I could do on my own. Extremely good value for money - five stars.

Great little hand drill, there are many times when you need to drill a small pilot hole. Especially in fragile things such as plastic, or as a starter hole in some flat pack furniture. Battery or power drills will do but this hand drill gives you greater control. Yes you could get a slightly better made one for a lot more money. But this drill at this price is a no brainier.

Initially advised delivery would take over 2 weeks, it in reality arrived via a 48 hour delivery, so two days instead! Minimal packaging, but adequate as the hand drill is pretty solid. Good value for what I paid for it and it's difficult to get hand drills nowadays! Hope to put it to good use shortly, following the demise of its predecessor.

It's very difficult to find these in the shops any more, but they are still very useful. Of course I have a rechargeable cordless drill. But for a small, one-off job indoors it's much easy to reach for a hand-drill. This one works well and has a weighty, substantial feel to it - which is a nice surprise considering the price!

I am not very good with anything that has to be assembled, I usually have to ask a friend to do it for me but I assembled my silverline drill stand without any help. It did the job that I wanted it to and I am completely satisfied with it. I think it is an excellent piece of equipment at the price that it is marketed.

The ugly noise of the power tool, especially thedrill fades away and projects are worked upon quietlyand patiently even if it took longer, but the newfoundfaith in handtools had to start with affordable bracesand hand drills such as this. I need this tool so much Imight buy a spare!

20.6.2013

Once upon a time you could buy a manual drill anywhere. No more, everybody buys rechargeable drills. I live on a small holding in Spain where I haven't always got electric to charge a drill and this little hand drill is just the ticket. It is also very well made and fit for purpose.
