I've owned a Blue Point portable soldering iron since 2000, 19 years old and it's done me very well but decided to replace it with this Portasol SP-1 and wow what a difference. It's physically much bigger but that's not a problem, did a comparison test soldering an inline fuse wire at half setting on the Portasol SP-1 and full power on my old Blue Point, it made my old one look like it was mildly luke warm! Took just a second to flow the solder. This is a beast, i can't imagine ever needing more than this for anything in a job or casual diy work. The bent metal fold out stand doesn't look good tho, but to be fair it's perfectly bent symmetrically in shape,so folds out and vice versa nicely and supports the weight so not really much more you need it to do.It's quiet too when warming up, ignites first time and get up to temp rapidly.Very impressed!

Its no good on a cold wet day when a soldering iron will not get hot enough to melt the solder. This gets very hot and its potable. A "must" for a short term jobs anywhere. However, here on Amazon I bought a 100 & 150 watt (which get really hot very quickly) electric soldering irons for longer term application for around £8 each. Can you believe that one???? I howvere do need both gas & electric as I have to work on external applications where running a mains cable is a real pain. This little gem is the business and I managed to fill it without too much mess using camping gas, as its much cheaper than buying the same thing in the form of cigarette lighter gas.Although I did need the old plastic adapter I had left over from an old lighter fuel filler that I bought from a well know supermarket beginning with "A" for around £1.50.

Some 25 years ago, I bought a gas soldering iron for use in my small alarm system and intercom business. It served me so well that even when it got old and hardly working, I kept it in my toolbox. Now that I work on my motorbike, I was looking for a soldering iron that I could take out to the part of the garage where I park my iron stallion, ridding me of the need to stretch a power line all the way there.I tried a Chinese product... Well, that was a total waste of money. And then I saw that Portasol are still around! I didn't hesitate and looked for a product suitable for my humble use and ordered the SP-1K.... Wow!!!!This is one magnificent product and I am so very happy I am back being a Portasol customer...Yes, I deserve it!

Got this to wire truck lights and to use on automotive wiring, Bargain!! Well priced for a cracking bit of kit, absolutely spot on, well made and robust, have only used it a hand full of times up to now but works a dream super hot and does exactly what it says it does on the box, neat little wire stand built in, easy to refill and see how much gas is left with the little window, even in the wind it stays hot enough to get a good flow of solder, would but again but with how well made this is I won’t need to, for a very long time at least!

I'm an auto electrical engineer.I have used most gas soldering irons on the market from sealey to cheep ones to expensive ones. This is hands down the best one I have used.Filled it up and used it on half gas and 30 seconds in it was ready to go.Heats up the quickest.Used about half the gas throughout the day compared to the other ones I have.Seen the tips are easily available for it.It is the best one I have used and now two of my colleagues have ordered one.I would recommend it to anyone.

I had previously bought a slightly cheaper version of a gas soldering iron which I was very happy with, apart from during the colder winter months I couldn't keep the heat in the tip.resulting in failure to soldier joints. I bought this one just to try it and I have had it out in some cold and windy days and this one has never yet failed to get hot enough to complete the task. Don't waste your money on the cheaper versions just buy this one wish I had. Would highly recommend to anyone.

High temps reached very quickly - the 2.4 mm tip it comes with is accurate for guitar patch cables (usually what I sue it for). Nice stand.I'm not convinced the rotating temp control is terribly accurate. I really just use low to save on gas and high for the soldering. Beware the heat coming out the side tho - I burnt my table cloth (don't ask!) as I was used to working with a plug-in soldering iron previously.

As per the description! This replaced a very old RS tools gas soldering iron (>30 years old) and a more recent Iroda item which is just too small to be useful for larger jobs. It's amazingly well-made and very hot. Big range of tips too - if you can find a supplier of course. I look forward to a long and happy relationship with this item :)

Have used Portasol irons since the 90s, in those days with a flint and wheel ignition system. They have evolved nicely over the years and are less prone to flare, and work better at all angles. Piezo ignition makes for fiddle free starting. I use Portasol and Iroda gas irons regularly, Both makes are highly reliable and good VFM.

Replacing my Gascat which I've loved for many years.Almost identical Irons. Can't bring myself to score 5 stars though, and it's all down to the stand !Not only does it lower the tone of the iron's quality build... I had to mess about with it to get it to stay folded into the iron.

Used this iron outside to work on the car and i must say that it was truly impressive, i have another iron that i use during the summer months when its not to windy but it has just been made redundant. this product got very hot very fast and worked well in the damp and wind.

Great portable iron. It’s to replace my old one of the same type that I dropped and broke, but was still working after years of service. It heats up quickly and with the optional interchangeable tips is very versatile.I would recommend to anyone that’s looking for one.

Exactly the same as my mates blue point one, I use it all the time at work on auto electrics and it's my go to soldering iron.Fantastic bit of kit.Thinking of getting another at this price just to put in the cupboard.Brilliant for heat shrink aswell.

I bought this for one of my grandsons for Christmas as it looked much like the one I have used! when I saw and compared it other than the colour,it looks like the same makers work! and it works just the same! Very happy with it.Many Thanks Bob

I have purchased other gas soldering irons and found that after a few attempts they would not light. I have found that your iron seems to work well. I do hope that your iron continues to keep on lighting. David Turrell.
