I love mangoes and buy them every week, but as you probably know they aren't the cheapest things in the world and they aren't the easiest things to cut up thanks to the ridiculously slippery flesh and the huge stone in the middle. I muddled through though and have the cuts and (strangely enough) bruises to show for it, that is, until the mango splitter came into my kitchen.I've had a few OXO products before and they are all gimmicky type things that serve one purpose only but they are quite handy for what they do and this is the case with the mango splitter too. It is really easy to use; you just put the mango stem side down and place the splitter on top and then push down.It is much easier to use than things like apple corers, mainly because the fruit is softer. This has an added advantage that the blades don't have to be overly sharp, in turn making it safer to use.The handles of the device are coated with a soft rubbery material which serves two purposes - firstly it makes it much more comfortable to hold, even when you apply a bit more force. Secondly, it gives you a bit more of a firmer grip when your hands are slippy from the flesh of the fruit.I sometimes cut a tiny bit off the bottom of the fruit (the bit where the stem is) so that it stands flatter on the cutting surface. You don't have to do this, it works with or without doing it, but I find that it makes it a bit easier for me.It is available on amazon for under £5. It may seem quite pricy for a gimmick, but I think it is completely worth it because it makes life so much easier. You'd make your money back in no time anyway thanks to the amount of fruit that you stop wasting by cutting it using the splitter rather than doing it by hand. You do get a lot more fruit from the mango by using this - it is great.

I agree with the other reviewers that getting the stone/kernel out of a mango is the hardest task of eating a mango. But living in Brazil, I eat a lot of mangos and only rarely now use this device. It's one thing removing the stone, but then you're left with mango flesh attached to the skin! It is fairly fiddly and messy negotiating that instead of the stone. I've found that the least messy way is to cut the flesh into little squares and then turn the skin inside out, making an outward curve of flesh pieces. But then you have to cut them away from the skin which is still not easy. All in all, I find it easier to peel the mango and then cut it vertically as close to the stone as possible. But having said that, this Oxo device does what it should. Two tiny preliminary cuts from a knife at the top of the mango, and then push downwards, and out comes your core: it couldn't be easier. But if you want to save on mess, then I think the knife and hands work better.

I was told about this gadget by my dentist, after having told him that all I could eat (at the time) was mango, but it was a pain to cut the mango from the stone so I was having to buy it cut into cubes from Waitrose. He told me that his girlfriend had bought him a mango cutter for Valentines Day. So I purchased this and although I can eat more than just mango now, it is a brilliant product and slices right through the mango avoiding the stone perfectly. I agree with other reviewers that it can be a bit of a push to get through the skin to start with, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine. I bought at the same time the OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer and the slicing part of thatgadget works really well with the de-stoned mango halves to strip the mango from the peel in the same way it does for the avocado, it may even cross-cut but I haven't tried doing that yet.

So many of these kitchen inventions end up at the back of the utensil drawer, used once and never to be used again. This, however, is a real exception to that rule. Preparing a mango isn't rocket science, but it can be messy and wasteful, not to mention dangerous (they're slippery - never a good thing when you're wielding a sharp knife). Using this tool is quick and easy and makes a neat job of the fruit.Having said that, if the skin is particularly tough, then it may be tricky to get started, and also, there tends to be a bit of flesh left on the pit which needs to be pared away with a proper knife.Once the pit is removed, you'll still need to separate the flesh from the skin - I normally just scoop it out with a spoon and then dice it.

I bought mine on clearance as one of those risk items you're not sure about. I'm glad I did.Cut off a very thin piece at the stalk end of a mango, stand it up, make sure you keep the splitter at what seems to be centralised to the stone and press down.I usually score squares on the flesh side and turn the skin inside out then cut off the pieces, or if its just for me then I score lines and drop all into a bowl, scoff it all in the other room and use teeth to get the mango off the stone. We've even got the man of the house to eat fruit! Shame really as mangoes aren't cheap.

I love mangos. But on many occasions they have sat in my fruit bowl until they went off as I could not face the hassle and clean-up preparing them. My mango splitter arrived today and I successfully 'split' my first mango with ease.If you peel the mango first with a fruit peeler, then it is ready to slice any way you want. Some reviewers have had problems with very large mangos and it would seem that this device works best with a medium sized fruit, but I don't think this detracts from the usefulness of this gadget.I would definitely recommend.

Actually works really well. I was surprised ad how effective it is. You do need to be careful lining it up. You need to make sure you get it all the way through the skin as well. Only reason for not 5 star is that it works best with 'medium mangos' and so you do need to be selective about mango size selection. Also, unlike other specialty items, this one really is only good for Mangos due to shape for pit. However, now that we have it it has upped our mango intake substantially as you can get the whole mango ready in 30 seconds

I always have trouble and get in a sticky mess trying to peel and core mangoes. I looked for one of these splitters in lots of places and then remembered to look on Amazon because they have everything you need. This item is quick, clean and easy to use getting out all of the "woody" bit of the mango and does not bruise the fruit. Just cut the end of the fattest part of the mango (opposite to the stalk) place the inner blade over the mango and push down - simple, non messy and quick.Brilliant item.

Where has this amazing piece of kitchen kit been, why have I not noticed it before now. I have had mango juice up to my elbows before now, grated my teeth on the mango stone to get every last bit ............ does what is says on the tin. Stripped mango in two seconds. On larger mangos there is a good bit of flesh left on the stone, but that is easy to sort out. I am more delighted with this than I can say ........ now what else can I use it on? Go on and buy one, its well worth it.

What a wonderful little gadget! Does a fabulous job of taking the flesh clean away from the stone leaving very little to cut off by hand. It gives you two big cheeks of mango and not a sticky hand in site (as long as you're not tempted to suck all the juicy bits off the stone that is ;)I prefer to cut the bottom flat first, then peel it so then all you need do is slice and eat. ps, i use a peeler which will leave you with the most mangoooooo! Enjoy!

I love mangoes but rarely bought them as they were so much hassle to eat, but this gadget really helps and I have eaten a lot more since buying it. Very sturdy and such a clever design. Using the gadget is dead easy. I still need a bit of practice getting the hedgehog shape right - where you make cuts in the mango and then turn the skin inside out to get the neat cubes, but I think that I will get the hang of it with time.

I have wanted to try one of these for ages. This one is of good quality and easy to clean. So far I have only successfully stoned one mango as two others were over ripe so it did not easily work on them. It takes a bit of practise to line up the stone but will be worth the effort once I have mastered it! A bit expensive but I think that the quality will make it worth it as a flimsier design would not stand the pressure.

A recent trip to The Gambia reminded how wonderful mangoes are to eat but returning home reminded me how difficult they are to deal with. Very messy. This mango splitter is ideal - one firm press and the mango splits into two with little wastage around the stone and you can then either do the hedge-hog thing on each side or, if the mango is ripe enough, simply spoon out the flesh. Recommended.

If you like the more exotic mango fruit but hate the splitting & loseing half the flesh around the stone then this is the best buy, easy to use and no waste!! Definately recommended. I'm a fruit nut and this utensil is the best of the bunch, so no more excuses for walking past the fruit counter & just wishing it could be easier, with this in the kitchen it just got a whole lot simpler!

I purchased a previous mango splitter it was so good a gave it to my Son who was struggling finding a way to cut his mangos, hence the new one purchased. Looked in a few shops but couldnt find the Oxo one till it was spotted on Amazon. I'm a collector of Oxo products good quality and time savers, I'm really impressed with all of my oxo products they are always well made and useful.
