I bought this mainly to prepare thinly and evenly sliced potatoes for making crisps in my deep fryer...I can do it with a sharp knife but not very evenly and it's tedious. Disappointingly, the cut with the slicer is not quite even either, with slices of potato thinner at the back of the cut and thicker at the front(first bit to be cut). The potato, cut in half, is not held firmly by the guard..there are just lots of small blunt plastic points a few mm deep which don't pierce the potato...they don't stop the potato from tipping over very slightly with each slice...the reason for the uneven cut mentioned above. The potato tips up at the back slightly(maybe 1mm) with each slice and believe it or not,by the end of slicing, the potato is at 90 degrees to the original cut with front cuts the correct width and rear cuts wafer thin. So the slices start off round but finish more like semi-circular, half the size. I tried a bread knife and pushed the teeth of the knife into the potato, but the same thing happened. Then I tried it by hand, making sure there was plenty of potato between my fingers and the blade. As long as I pressed down on the rear of the potato, keeping it level on the slicer, the slices came out round or oval with fairly even thickness. I used the guard for the last cuts. There is no need to cut the potato in half this way. I don't recommend holding the potato by hand to anyone else...risks a nasty cut to your fingers but it's the only way I can get even cuts. I can't think how else you would begin to cut cucumber or carrot. A protective kitchen glove would help make it safer. The 1mm setting produces paper thin slices that take only a minute to fry..they have to be dropped into the hot oil separately to avoid sticking together but it takes around a minute to drop them all in, so by the time the last ones are ready(another minute) the first ones are burnt. I prefer the widest 3mm cut which makes slices so much easier to handle, rinse and pat dry. They take about 3 minutes to fry to a crisp without getting too brown. I can't seem to get light golden crisps but my fryer is not temperature adjustable. As for other types of food the slicer made messy cuts of my bananas and is reported to do the same with tomatoes...much better to cut by hand, which is how I prefer to cut tomato, cucumber and carrot, not too thinly. I guess if you make a lot of cucumber sandwiches it would save time. For salads I prefer grated carrot.. In summary, for the purpose I bought it for it does work quite well and the price is very reasonable but when the novelty has worn off my homemade crisps it might hide away in a drawer. It is easy and quick to rinse and the blade safety setting for storage is a bonus.

I approached my new mandoline nervously, as if it were a loaded gun and I had never held a loaded gun before (I haven't, nor a mandoline. Or a mandolin for that matter)I was recently shown a mandoline injury, and it wasn't pretty.However, given that to produce fine slices you must have a lethal, razor sharp blade, I think OXO have managed the difficult juggle of effective slicing and safety extremely well.Holding the thing to be sliced directly seems to be asking for unintended finger tips and knuckle edges to become an unexpected part of your dish, along with a plentiful supply of blood as a basis for stocks and sauces.Oxo solve this with the cover/knob/object holder which fulfils all thesefunctions - little plastic teeth on the underside which prong your item and you then hold the handle and whizz away backwards and forwards, thinly slicing.Yes of course some items might be harder to achieve this with, (harder vegetables which might be more resistant to the plastic prongs) and resorting to a processor the best option, but for everyday small amounts of thin slicing this is a quicker option.Oxo have built in a couple of extra safety features as well, the slice of the cutting aperture gives you 3 choices for varying thickness - but it also includes a no aperture/close option, which sheathes the lethal blade. An excellent feature if you need to throw this into the washing up bowl to be quickly cleaned before slicing something for a different dish later. And for double safety, the cover/knob combo is fitted over it.And the other handle, the 'good grips' handle with which you hold the whole thing steady, is a comfortable grip and enables you to effectively swirl the mandoline, aperture open, for cleaning.Inevitably there will be problems with 'the last slice' of whatever, getting half stuck in the aperture - use some other object to release it and don't let those precious fingers come anywhere near the blade!In a spirit of 'let's mandoline everything close to hand', including stuff which is best dealt with another way (garlic) I had a fast whale of a time with tomato cucumber raw fennel mushroom and the aforementioned garlic, and was delighted with the speed and efficiency of my efforts, with not a whisker of injury in sight. Yet. Used cautiously and respectfully, with awareness of the sharpness of the blade, I think this is a great piece of design

This review is for the OXO good grips mandolin slicer. Most of my comments are contained in the accompanying video review, however I have briefly summarised them below.THINGS THAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS MANDOLIN SLICER:* The safety guide - this was one of the key things that made me decide to purchase this model* The large chunky handle on the guide - as I am getting older my hands are not as able to grip things as they used to be. I find that this handle is comfortable to hold even when exerting pressure onto the item that you are slicing* The safety blade position - this means that I can store my mandolin in my tools drawer and not worry about cutting my fingers* The three different cutting positions.These are great as I am able to slice things almost paper thin on the lowest setting up to a decent sized slice for potato dauphinoise.* The blade is extremely sharp which results in a very neat, clean cut* There is hardly any wastage left after slicing* It is easy to clean, just swill it in hot soapy waterTHINGS THAT I WASN'T SO KEEN ON:* Due to the height of the item you are slicing the guide can't be slotted onto the mandolin at the outset. It only gets close to the edges of the mandolin after you have almost completed your slicing. Because of this I have found that I can end up slicing in all directions as my hand and the guide move around.* The spiky grips in the handle don't 'spear' the item you are holding as well as they could and it can come loose whilst being sliced.MY OVERALL CONCLUSION:This has been a great addition to my collection of kitchen gadgets. The blade is sharp enough to produce excellent and consistently good results. I find it comfortable to use and I particularly like the safety hand guide. I would happily recommend this to anyone who is looking to purchase a mandolin for home use.

Three cutting thicknesses that can be adjusted by moving a tab on one side which lowers the first half of the mandolin below the blade as you increase thickness and upwards when decreasing thickness. When not in use, the tab can be moved into a storage position keeping the sharp blades angled below the part of the mandoline where you slide the food on. Can be used holding onto the handle or positioned over a bowl.The thickness it offers are wafer thin, 3-4mm and one other thickness between these two. It only slices, and does not offer julienne, french fry or dicing capabilities. I would have preferred a thicker option than what is available as I don't find much difference between the 2nd and 3rd thicker slices.This product's biggest letdown is the food holder.There are a rows and rows of pyramid shaped points but they don't hold well onto foods without damaging it (at best, at few holes and at worst, many holes and lines from where the points have torn through the food and dragged through it.) When using the mandoline, I hold the item I want to cut by hand till it's fairly close to the blade, before switching to the food holder to finish it off. When it's on it's finer setting I can do multiple passes and guess pretty easily when I need to switch over. With the thicker slices because it requires less passes over the blade it's a harder judgement to make. I like the mandoline for it's sharpness, but it's ability to use it safely is appalling.The food holder can be attached to the mandoline by sliding it down by grooves along the side. Lining it up next to the tab holds it more securely.Cleaning is quick with a washing up brush, but move the brush in the direction away from the blade else it will get caught in the small gap between the flap and blade and damage the brush and blade.

At this time of the year when I want to whip up a quick salad or salad roll for lunch I want to make cutting salad vegetables as quick and easy as I can. At this time of the year I normally opt for a V slicer however normally by the end of the season I'm throwing this away due to vegetables getting stuck in the V section. This year I decided to opt for a mandoline as I don't really use all the features of a V slicer anyway.The price is great and the product does what it says on the tin. The blade is obviously very sharp noticeable by the way it slices through veggies. So far I've used this to slice my leeks and dice my onion for my Lentil soup and slicing tomatoes/cucumber/lettuce and peppers for salad rolls.The Mandoline made short work of all these veggies although for the larger veggies I did have to chop them in half as the mandoline width is smaller than the normal V slicer but this didn't really bother me. There are three level of thickness to use, so far I've only used the biggest one which I think is a size you would have to take a bit of time to get with a knife (being a novice). Havent used this over a bowl to see how the ridges hold up but they are rubber and the blade cuts so easily I'm sure it will be fine.Its easy to clean, rinse under the tab and a scrub (careful now!) onto the draining board to dry and back in the drawer. The blades have a lock so you can't accidentally cut yourself while rooting around your drawer and the holder also clips onto the body of the slicer to keep them together.Don't think I'll buy another expensive V slicer again!

I have been using this for several months and it is sharp (ooooooh, is it sharp!) and fantastic. I use it almost every day. I suppose that it was inevitable that someone as daft as me would eventually have an accident - and i did. New Year's day, slightly squiffy, slicing mushrooms with no guard (I know, I know), distracted by dog eating a vole in the garden and them my kitchen timer went off. I jumped like a startled fawn and sliced the end off my ring finger, right hand.There was blood ALL OVER EVERYTHING - I looked like Lady Macbeth on a bad night. Didn't feel the pain at first. And then I did. Lots of very bad swears. Didn't go to A and E because it was just a flesh wound.Went three hours later as I still hadn't stopped bleeding and I was running out of clean towels to soak up the gore. They put some sticky stuff on that stemmed the flow otherwise I expect I would still be gushing like a fountain. Some other poster has complained that they would like thicker slices on the mandolin - I'm pleased there aren't because I could just have easily taken 1/4 inch of my finger rather than the 1/8 inch I deftly managed. Nurse at A and E says she wouldn't have one in the kitchen as they get a couple of these injuries through each week and most of them are worse than mine (I got off lucky, apparently - clean slice, no nail bed involved, no nerve or tendon damage - only pain. Lots and lots of pain.).I'm still using mine. With the guard. (Took off a star from sheer malice - it is a superb instrument if used sensibly and when you are sober)

After purchasing the oxo potato peeler, going from ceramic to metal again I was dubious about the quality of this item as it was mainly plastic. My first thought was I don't think its gonna work... I used the item on the first setting to judge the thinnest slice it could produce, at first I didn't think it was working, but low and behold it did, all settings were fantastic. So I ho about slicing on the thinnest setting for my dauphinouir potato bake. Brilliant, consistent slices with minimal effort. Unbeknownst to me I had sliced the tip of my finger in the process I carry on going. Its only until I start grating the cheese I realise its coming out red :-/the mandolin was SO GOOD I sliced my finger and didn't realise I'd done it!! Very nice clean cut, no jagged edges. Yes I should be more impressed with the potatoes but I was surprised I didn't feel a thing!! Please use the guard, I did revert to using the guard and it actually made the slicing process quicker!! Is fine to go in the dishwasher, I wouldn't trust sponge cleaning it in case it takes on your sponge and fingers, it does have a lock mechanism to raise the blade so it cant cut but I still wouldn't trust it. I think its out to get the whole set of digits....10/10 - minus my stupidity, its not the mandolins fault. What a lovely little gadget, I'm just glad I had it on the thinnest setting. I would give this five stars but my finger won't let me, it still holds a grudge.

After watching Jamie Olivers 15 minutes meals with endless delicious looking cabage salads I considered buying a food processor. However I wonder how much i would use such a thing as i prefer doing doughs and bakey stuf with my hand mixer or by hand. Also in my new fabulous kitchen I try not to clutter my worktop with machines and hide as much as i can in drawers. So was not keen to have a huge processor taking up a whole drawer. Anyhow decided to give this mandalin a try and it is great. I am now making salads in almost no time. In fact I argue I'm quicker than Jamie as this thing is washed and hid away in the drawer in seconds.It is so small and the little safety grip stores on the slicer itself.I agree that the slices come out slightly tapered but i dont find that a problem. I can slice potatoes for dauphinoise no prob and today did ultra thin strips of white cabage which was delicious.Somebody pointed out that the safety grip doesnt hold long items like carots and cucumber. Well that is true and anyone with common sense would not try to balance a carrot on little plastic tips. If you stay focused and stop slicing in good time you will keep your fingers. But it is extremely sharp so do be careful if your are prone to cutting yourself. The slicer do store in a locked position where the blade does not cut and the grip will cover the blade as well.A good wee gadget in the kitchen and space saving which i find a must

If you're just getting into Mandoline slicing and want something cheap, but quality - which is exactly the position I was in when I bought it - this is the perfect item. The price is actually unbelievable, as 'full' slicers can easily cost three times as much.This thing is great. I don't know where it's been all my life, but it's made chopping much simpler for me. It has three thickness settings - though so far I've found myself only really using the thinnest - and it has a 'lock' setting, which means it's impossible to touch the blade. Perfect for storage and cleaning. Speaking of cleaning, this literally only needs a rinse.The blade is incredibly sharp and has had no problem with anything I've tried so far.There are a few downsides,however.- I've found that when slicing chillies, the seeds can, on occasion, go flying all over. This is probably because I'm using it on the thinnest setting, so I'd suggest using the second for these.- Again, on the thinnest setting, if the item you're slicing contains a lot of water (which is often the case), slices can get stuck to the underside, meaning you have to scrape them out. The design of the underside makes this a little more difficult than it could have been - there are raised edges, so you can't just slide them off the side.I personally wasn't too bothered that this can't do julienne or chips - due to its price and handheld nature.

Wow. I decided in my infinite wisdom that I needed a mandoline (after all, who doesn't?!). I actually just bought this for making ratatouille, which was amazing, and nicked my finger of the edge a tiny big (my own fault) - ouch! But was great to use and clean in the dishwaasher.The next day I decided to make a vegetarian lasagna, and therefore wanted to make long strips of courgette. Looking back I should have cut the courgette in half lengthways before subjecting it to my beginner mandoline culinary skills. I didn't, got distracted, didn't use the guard and whilst talking to my son, encountered the blade up and very personal with my thumb.Like love,the sting was sharp and the bleeding profuse - I held it above my my head which ran down my arm and freaked out my 6yr old who decided I needed an ambulance. I didn't, but boy the really thumb bleeds a lot! It looked like I had a crimson viper coiling it's way around and up/down my arm. Nothing seemed to help (and I had no steristrips), so I held it aloft, applied pressure til it was the calmest it could be and smeared it with superglue (my thumb not the mandoline). Eventually it healed/ stopped looking like I'd cut a major artery, and when everything was calm enough I removed the superglue (released the blood blister that had built up, steri-stripped the sides together (thank you husband) and glued the edges. Everything's good!

Have been after a Mandoline for a while now. Was originally going to get the original Benriner that you see all the chefs using on TV. But after looking into it, was worried that someone may get hurt using it incorrectly and slicing a finger. Opted for the Oxo Good grips mandoline slicer because. V shaped blade seems to make it easier to cut various items, from starchy potatoes, hard carrots, soft tomatoes, onions, lemons, oranges etc, It cuts very well. It is very easy to adjust the thickness of the cut with a simple dial. No need to worry about adjusting both sides to make it even. One dial controls the thickness. It has a built in stand that lifts up the top and at a slant so you can slice away with ease,not having to manually support the weight of the mandoline as you slice. Included with the kit was julienne attachments, which are very useful they make great french fries. The finger guard works well, leaving only a small amount of fruit or vegetable behind that cannot be cut. Storage, the whole thing including attachments clip and store inside the mandoline making storage a breeze. Clean up is ok, however before using it, I remove any attachments I don't need and set aside, otherwise they will get dirty even though your not using them.Very happy with this purchase, makes food prep a breeze and saves a lot of time.

Its tremendously satisfying using this this to slice up onions, potatoes, lemon, apple pieces etc, most of time its so thin you can see through the slender pieces.It cleverer than most too, there's an adjustable gate with 4 settings which changes the amount of blade gap (or open jaw) is presented to the item being chopped, therefore you can vary the thickness of the slice with 3 settings and the fourth is its completely closed. This 4th setting is perhaps the most important to many people as it means once shut, you can sling it into any location(or dishwasher) without fear of accidentally shredding your finders when grasping for kitchen instruments.the unit has a slight arc pivoting from the handle which means when placed on a flat surface its will still dispense a generous amount of cuts before clogging.Only thoughts against it are perhaps the blades aren't replaceable, there is some flex on the gate so it can vary slice size if your heavy handed. great for small jobs but perhaps the unit is on the small size and therefore not great on larger items(wider than a typical tin of beans) or slicing industrial quantities of fodder. But generally a home cook on occasion entertaining 2-8 people will be very happy with the perfectly sliced and uniform slices to aid in presentation and effortless prep.

For quickly slicing a small amount of fruit or veg this is great - so I've been making small pickled side salads lately. Sits over a bowl and has a notched rubber grip to stop it slipping. The slicing thickness adjust is a simple slide action and can also be set to '0' to guard the blade for storage - and you can clip the food holder over it as well although it staying in place depends on the degree of clutter in your utensil drawer.Only has a single fixed (but adjustable depth) blade - so if looking to julienne or cut batons or crinkle cut you need a different machine.My only negative would be that the slicing thickness adjustment can slip from thin to thicker if slicing quickly - so keep watching it.USE THE FOOD HOLDER WHEN SLICING!I need to print that on the thing as the very first time I used it I handheld the cucumber and sliced a thick section off my little finger - so USE THE FOOD HOLDER! Can't blame the tool for the tool using it :)If you slice lots of stuff or want different cut types - you need a more robust machine with extra blades.If you want a simple machine for plain slicing fruit and veg in small amounts quickly without a load of attachments making your utensil drawer even more dangerous then this is an excellent choice.

I've never owned a mandolin, and wasn't sure I'd use it. However, when I saw the bargain price of this one, and the fact it was made my Oxo, I went for it. Boy am I glad I did! I loved potato gratin, potato dauphinoise, etc, but could rarely be bothered to slice all the potatoes. When I did summon the will power to slice numerous potatoes, they'd end up far too thick and irregular...Enter the Oxo :)The first time I used it, I put a potato on the cutting surface, and held it with the "finger guard". After a few strokes I thought I'd done something wrong as it didn't seem to be cutting.... but one look on the worktop and I realised the potato was now in perfectly formed, thin as you like, slices.Hurrah! It sliced so quickly and smoothly that you can barely feel it cutting at all.The 3 cutting thicknesses are just right, and the finger plate is essential (don't leave that bit in the draw unless you want a trip to A&E!).The only con is the fact it's a bit of a fiddle to clean, but that is simply because the blade is sharp.... but that has to be expected.So, wonderful product, amazing price, a bargain even if you only use once a month for potato gratin.

I always knew I was lacking in the vegetable slicing department. I would be so nervous cooking for anyone, terrified I'd be exposed and publicly ridiculed for my uneven and often half cut half torn chopping ability. Things got particularly bad in the summer when I made a lot of stir fry and salads. The angles were all off on my cucumbers, the edges of my pak choi rough. It was an embarrassment. However, Christmas came along and I thought now is the time my life needs to enter the next level of culinary skill so I purchased this mandolin (as a gift for my partner but sssh) anyway, my god, I thought life was good before the mandolin but now I have it, I literally do not know how it can get any better!I slice vegetables and fruits like some sort of magical vegetable carving wizard. Before I used to pre-cut vegetables before guests would come round but now I glide peppers, onions and mushrooms up and down the board, revealing a neat pile of identically sliced veg. Guests who would previously complain about my vegetables now applaud my ability for slicing the 'best damn pepper they've ever had'. This is a life changing kitchen utensil, buy it.
