My 5 year old son was given this set for Christmas but it is his 2 (nearly 3) year old brother who really loves it. The models with instructions are actually very fiddly to put together - there is no way either child could manage it. My 5 year old has some interest in helping find the pieces while I put it together but it doesn't hold his attention for long.My 2 year old though has played with it every day (now Feb). He makes his own constructions and is very proud of them. The large sized pieces are easy for him to handle and the very useful tub is (so far) managing to keep most of the pieces from being lost. The motor however is not very durable and broke very quickly. It consists of two parts - the motor itself and the bit that turns (I'm not very technical!). The two parts are connected by a wire that can be disconnected in the middle. After a few days of being carried around by my children we had a loose connection in the motor and it ceased working. My husband took it apart and said the motor was very cheap and flimsy and that the wire could not be re-connected. So we now have no motor. That said my 2 year old still really loves the set and is getting huge value from it so for that reason I have given it a 5. If you think your child will be disappointed if the motor breaks I would suggest buying a non-motorised set.

I bought this for my son's 4th birthday, as he had previously played with a set at a friends house. He absolutely loves it! It is very easy to put together, even I can manage to follow the assembly instructions (that is saying something!). The quality is excellent and we have already had many hours of fun building the different models. My son then actually drove the car we made off the top of the stairs, it bumped down every one of the 13 steps and only four bits came off - it was in full working order at the bottom, which proved the robustness of the product and makes it good value for money. I bought this at £24.99 which I thought was very reasonable, so this is a bargain price at the moment (£17.49),I would throughly recommend it. If the other motorised sets were the same price I would buy them today!

I bought this for my 4 year old grandson. We had great fun building the models but the instructions were not as easy to follow as I expected. Also we lost one of the nuts and I presumed there would be spares to allow for the odd lost piece but no for the merry go round ride we needed 19 nuts and that's all that was supplied so we had to hunt for the 19th nut that we had lost when we built the racing car!! Luckily we found it otherwise the model would not have been completed!! I think that a couple of extra nuts and bolts would be appreciated especially as it's for 4-8 year olds. The motor gave my grandson the confidence and enthusiasm to complete the models and he was thrilled when they worked.Very good for the budding engineer in us all!!

My 6 year old loves this. I would say that it us mire suitable at start age six or seven as the instructions ate quite advanced. If your child is quite confident in construction then this is fine otherwise wait until he/she is much older. The instructions are stepped in total picture form with no words and only numbers which my son followed on his own. He has made several of the items and played with them for a long time. He makes the motirised robot or car and it can move forward and backwards with a movement ofbthe motor switch. He is now creating his own objects using the skills already learnt. The earlier meccano box in this range which in orange a good intro before this one.Great value and hours of fun.

This was a great Christmas gift for my grandson. It's a nice little kit and comes in a good storage box for all the small parts. It makes three or four different models which is a bonus, and the motor brings them all to life (needs two AA batteries) It was listed as age 5 up, but my grandson who is 5, still needed our help building the models. Hopefully he will be able to build them on his own now he's been shown how it's done. pro's - Nice little kit, practical, educational and good value for money - cons - small parts so a bit fiddly. Overall - would recommend (maybe age 6 & up)

This Meccano comes in a nice, robust and big but easy to store coloured box, like others in the serie. The examples are well documented and some of the models can take as little as 10 minutes to put together. It is advertised as suitable from 4 years old. The dilema here is that no 4 years old can build any of the examples and it is quite possible that older children might not take any fun in playing with the finished products because they are a bit bulky and limited in scope. So much you can do with a spining carousel...Fun to build, but not so much to play with...

My four year old son has a couple of the sets that come in the plastic boxes, and he loves them. When we first got them he asked us to make some of the models in the instructions for him, but nowadays he just does his own thing. He can spend hours at a time making the most fantastical constructions out of them. He especially loves the motor and has come up with some amazing crazy vehicles. This is a superb tool for learning the use of basic tools (screwdriver and spanner) and teaching which direction you turn bolts/screws to make them to in or out.

Meccano toys are robust, colourful and well designed. And the instructions are good too, although you have to follow them very carefully. My four-year-old learnt a lot helping me to make the 5 toys in this set - great preparation for building his own Ikea furniture in the future - but I have to say that when built, the toys are not that appealing to play with. The roundabout was unstable, and one of the cars would not go because the tyres rubbed against the bodywork. Quite easily solved, but not ideal.

Good fun for all family.Very good value as it comes with a nice box to store all the bits and is larger to store more as well.Complicated models: it took me 20 min to assemble the motorcycle (and I am over 30 yrs old and working in engineering domain :))It was a little difficult for my 4.5 yrs old daughter but she is learning how to build now.I think that this type of toy would be better for a 6 yrs old child.I purchased this set + 150pcs one as well so I can make different toys.

This has been a great buy. My 9 year old son was deperate to open this on Christmas morning and was able to build a motorised car by himself. All of his friends have marvelled at his model and it has not fallen apart with all of its play. The only downside that I can see with this is that he loves his car so much we have not dismantled it yet to build one of the other models but it is nice to have that flexability to do that in the future.

It is generally safe for 4 years old, but only very able 4 years old can play with this set independtly. There are intructions for 5 models, you need to make other 5s in your imagination. This is not a problem. I would say , it is very encouraging. You can also design your own models. The down side is the motor, only last 3 months and I can't get a replacement anywhere.Overall it's a good set, if you are lucky to get the good quality motor.

I bought this for my 5 year old nephew and his father said that he really enjoys playing with it and can make random things by himself or with the help of his father follow the instructions meccano have provided for specific models. No end to the items that children can create with this product. As my nephew is 5, he will still be able to play with this toy for a few years. Meccano always value for money.

THIS WAS A XMAS PRESENT FOR MY 7-YEAR OLD SON. WE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND CONSTRUCTED A ROBOT TOGETHER, THAT MOVED AROUND THE ROOM BACK AND FORTH. WE BOTH LIKED IT VERY MUCH AND ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT. THE ILLUSTRATED INSTRUCTIONS ARE A BIT DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW, BUT WITH A LITTLE EXPERIENCE THINGS CAN GET BETTER. I WOULD CERTAINLY BUY MORE FROM THE SAME COMPANY!

I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old daughter as a xmas present which would give me an opportunity to show her something a little less girly than the stuff she normally plays with. I hoped she would show a little interest but more than that she has loved it and I am not sure which of us enjoys it the most! A great toy to make together and get some of the grey matter working.

I always thought you could never go wrong with Meccano so I thought I would try it this year for my youngest grandson (nearly five).Well to my delight it was a great success. So much so that when I texted my daughter to tell her that Jack had left a toy behind when they went home, she said he hasn't noticed because he is too busy CONSTRUCTING.
