I'm old enough to remember when Meccano was made of metal and was mostly just a collection of varying lengths of perforated metal plates. Times change and so has Meccano and they've taken over the American 'Erector Set' toy company and merged the two into a new Meccano. Much like modern-day Lego this kit consists of lots of very specific parts, rather than just a set of basic shapes, but you can still assemble them into a range of possible vehicles. There's a large format instruction manual in the box with detailed pictorial plans for 3 of the possible 25 vehicles this set makes and so you can start off with either a buggy, truck or stretch motorbike.The manual is a good size with decent-sized images but the quality of printing isn't the best and when they're trying to illustrate which dark grey component attaches to another dark-grey component it can all get a bit muddy. The other 22 plans are available to download from the Meccano website in PDF format - search for 'off-road racer' or item code number 17204 (ignore Amazon's name for the kit which is wrong).The kit includes a couple of simple tools, basically a hex-driver and a mini spanner, and that's all you'll need most of the time. The ability to recognise intricate three-dimensional components from indistinct two-dimensional illustrations will also help - as will a bit of persistence and patience. You get a motor to power your chosen vehicle (don't forget to add the three AA batteries it needs) but it's really just an on/off affair and you've got no real control over speed or direction. When competing with the range of remote control toys around these days, or even the basic robotic toys, the finished Meccano vehicle does seem a bit unexciting. The pleasure in the kit is definitely in the building and the rebuilding - especially for kids engaged enough to start making their own customised vehicles once they've tried a couple of the official ones. It's not quite Meccano as it used to be but it's fun and engaging for the right kids (or adults) and is a great next step for mechanically-minded kids growing out of their Lego sets.

First, this kit is great value: there is a wealth of components provided - an assortment of metal nuts, bolts, a few metal plates, and then lots of moulded plastic pieces in red, black and dark grey - all of which have been sensibly grouped into different bags (essential when identifying bolts of slightly different lengths). Two tools are provided to assist in assembly; a T-shaped Allen/hex key and a three-way spanner. Instructions are supplied for a motorbike and two jeep-type vehicles, and the back of the box gives examples of a further 22 models possible with the contents of the kit. I built one of the jeeps detailed in the instructions, and it was fairly easy (if time-consuming; it took almost 3 hours in all)although the colour scheme made it tricky at times, as the black and dark grey components look very similar in the isometric drawings. A bonus is that the kit comes with a battery pack and motor - an integral part of the guided models - so your finished vehicle can trundle away by itself! My model had some issues, so expect a fair amount of tweaking to get the mechanics working just right. I suppose that is my concern with this: the kit says it is suitable for 9+, but I'd suggest that this is not the kit to give to a 9 year old with no previous experience of meccano kits or similar. Construction can be very fiddly, it requires a lot of patience and focus, and the pieces - especially the nuts - are so tiny, I can well imagine half of them disappearing up the vacuum cleaner, if left with a less than fastidious child. In the right hands, though, I'm sure it would be incredibly rewarding - and it doesn't half look cool!

I'm 70 years old and remember meccano from my childhood. How I wish I had been able to make something as complex, yet reasonably easy for the older (9-14) child with some adult assistance. All is included for making this rally jeep except for the batteries to run the motor. To make the other (24) designs, you need to visit the web site and download the plans.So, why not 5 stars? First there were some small parts missing (annoying) secondly the quality of the manual - an older child should not need an adult to work some of the instructions out!Having said all that, you do get 25 designs out of one box, or you can make up your own, and the manufacturer will help sort out anything missing very quickly (or this review would have been 2 stars).So,don't be afraid to buy, I know another purchaser who's box contents were complete AND you'll find your child and yourself will have hours and hours of funp.s. Took me and my 9 year old great-grandson 4 hours to build, but this was his first major construction kit!

This makes a great present for any technical minded people in the family, small or big.We like the fact that it doesn't just make one thing unlike some kits where once you've made the item on the front of the box that is it and it get put aside and never really used again.With this kit you have 25 different versions of the jeep you can make and install the motor in which makes for longer term use and enjoyment it can be taken apart and put together again and again.We definitely recommend this for the budding mechanical engineers in your family.

This is one of Spinmasters new offerings to replace an earlier 25 model set. There are three models in the manual, which look fairly straightforwardto build and 22 more on the web to download. Quality of the printing of the manual could be better.My own set had some small parts missing, which can happen infrequently. These had to be ordered direct.One big issue that may occur is the rods used may NOT fit the parts, this is currently under investigation by Spinmaster,it is thought a batch of rods is faulty.

Provides a good level of challenge which requires levels of persistence and resilience to complete. Great problem solving activity and super easy to get the kids into engineering. It's not too easy but also not so difficult that it'll put them off! Brilliant and just shows how with a bit of thought into how to re-market an old-style toy, you can appeal to today's mostly tech obsessed kids.

A very good toy but four stars instead of five because the motor/ drive cogs on the axle didn’t work as well as they should do. The cogs slip and don’t grip. I tried everything to no avail. My grandson was happy so apart from the cog problem I am happy.

Quality kit that's just as much fun to do now as it was when I was 11.The material is cheaper than I remember. But the fun in hands-on craftsmanship is the same. I'm loving spending time with my nephews and nieces while they explore building things.

As yet has not been fully used but have checked the contents and bit disappointed as to the packaging the Meccano is in . It is left rattling about in plastic bags, not happy with this

Very good item though a little difficult for my 6 yr old grandson. ( I should have believed what it said on the box!) He will enjoy it when he gets a bit older
