My 7 year old son choose this with some Christmas money, and a week on he is still captivated - and I have to admit that it has sucked me in once or twice and I've found that I've played it for a couple of hours before I knew it! So far, a hit with 7 year old son and 9 year old daughter. It is a fairly basic 'strategy' game, building a colony of fighting forces and buildings to support them. Nothing more complex than something that I had on my phone a couple of years ago, but well executed and with more scope than a phone game. The gameplay is more limited and the graphics are a lot more basic than I had expected, and certainly less than the other Lego games which have nicely-rendered 3D environments. But there is freedom in the way that the game can be played, and I think that that is good in itself. For fans of the other Lego games (we have Lego Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean on DS), it might be worth noting that this game lacks the humour that is the hallmark of the Lego games. We had been looking forwards to multiplayer until we realized that we would need two gamecards, rather than being able to do a wireless download as you can with Mariokarts. Bit of a disappointment; I might see if I can pick up a 2nd copy of the game but wouldn't consider paying full price just for the potential to play head to head - but I can see that it would be interesting to play a strategy game against my children that is more entertaining than 'Blockus'.

This is a fantastic little game.It is basically a strategy game. You build a castle, a barracks, a war machine factory and build soldiers etc. which must then complete a specific mission. The number of soldiers you can build is governed by how many farms you build. Your total goes up by four per farm. You can also build a harbour which enables you to build a selection of warships and a transport ship to carry troops over sea. There are several differnt scenarios to play through, from pirates and royal navy, to space marines and aliens. Each "species" you play has slightly different soldiers and equipment for you to build, but all in all each piece of equipment or trooper does much the same thing as it's counterpart does when playing as a different group.I had a lot of fun with this game, exploring levels and discovering all the hidden extra's on each level. This game was extremely enjoyable to me as I am a fan of strategy type games and games which allow you to go where you like on each map.I had hours of fun with this game. It was well worth picking up.My only gripe is that once I had completed the game, gone back to levels where I needed to find hidden extras and collected them, I found that the fun had gone out of the game so I stopped playing it and moved on to something else. I bought the lego Ninjago game which is quite similar, but not as much fun as Lego Battles. All in all, well worth picking up, lots of fun.

or so says my son, for whom this was purchased. It now occupies the same place in the LEGO pantheon as the rest of the games we've collected over the years. Not the same sort of action game as the Indiana Jones/Star Wars/Harry Potter games, it requires a sense of strategy, as it is somewhat more of a gaming situation with expansions of territory and addition of new characters as rewards for completing various tasks. We've never been failed by LEGO, the games are always more than they seem, requiring a sense of adventure and also the ability to reason through various situations and puzzles. This one does it all. Apparently for hours.

Grandson say's "It's great" that's good enough for me. There are a total of three different stories in the game, each with the option of playing as the protagonists or the antagonists. There are 6 different quests (one for the protagonists and one for the antagonists of each story), with 15 different levels in each quest. Quests are divided into three acts, each act ranging in length of 4-6 levels. It is similar to Starcraft in that it has buildings, builders, fighters, machines (Specials) and Resources.

I bought this game as my son was curious about it. He got it out of the box and has not put it down since. It is really entertaining for all ages. The good thing is there is no blood and guts on this one which makes me happy. Also the little stories it has makes my son laugh. If you want something that is funny and will keep you entertained then this one is a must....

I can report my son loves this game in the last week he has come home from school and only surfaced from the game to go to the loo and eat (complaining that he is not hungry). The game play brings in elements of previous Lego games plus some elements of adventure game role play.It passes the eight year old boy test so I can recommend this game.

A Christmas Present for my Grandson who put it on his Christmas list but I haven't seen him on it so the rating is purely an exercise in getting it off my orders page. Sorry Amazon but you need to give us another option for when we can't give the item a rating.
