After careful study of many reviews I bought a P-35C shredder, as it seemed to be a good balance of cost and quality. The most important thing to emphasise about this shredder is that it is very clearly intended for light use, with the user guide recommending daily use is limited to 20 sheets per day. Also the description here states 5 sheets maximum, but the user guide mentions in the small print that it means 5 sheets of 70gsm paper, so if you going to be shredding standard 80-90gsm paper then it is safer to only shred 2-3 sheets at a time. The design and build quality appear to be fairly high, with the cutting blades looking strong and sturdy, and a good central handle to lift the top from the bin. Most of the weight is in the top lift off lump and the bin is very light on its own, which makes the whole thing a little top heavy, so I would recommend floor standing, as it seems less prone to being knocked over like that. There are three switches to turn it fully on or off, which seems a little bit over the top, but for home use with children around that might be a good thing. There is a small power on/off switch at the back; a sliding forward and reverse switch, with a central neutral point, at the front; and a small slightly tricky to move safety lock, next to that. The safety lock in particular appears most likely to defeat small children, but I don't have any to test it!The first time I turned the power on the shredder ran for about 10 seconds, possibly due to a small test paper residue in the mechanism. Then it easily shredded 1 and 2 sheets of 80gsm paper, but by the time I tried 3 sheets at a time is sounded deeper and more strained, so I oiled it with the Fellowes oil I had also bought and continued. It still sounded like hard work shredding 3 sheets, so I stuck with 2 at a time. The cut was narrow strips with a cross cut about 4mm x 50mm, a little larger than the description here, but small enough to be fairly destructive, although not entirely for a very determined person. After about 20 sheets there was a change in the sound of the shredder even handling 2 sheets. When I lifted the top I found that the shredded paper had piled up in the middle of the bin and was building up to the shredder head which was enough to reduce the ability to pass new sheets through. A quick shake reduced the pile to lower in the bin and the shredder continued as normal, but I think this indicates the strength and suitability of this machine well.ConclusionIf you need a neat compact quality brand shredder for occasional or light use this is a good machine to consider - if you need something that can properly handle 5-7 sheets at a time and 100 sheets regularly, then don't buy a P-35C, as you need a larger, stronger shredder. Also if you only need home security level shredding then this machine will do the job, but if you want very fine confetti like shreds then a P-35C does not shred documents fine enough. Personally, I like this shredder and it is ideal for my needs, but I think the description does slightly overstate what the machine can really handle.OilIf you buy any Fellowes shredder then don't forget the oil as it is recommended to use it once for every full bin of shredding. This one seemed to be the best value, 355ml for under £6

It's a sign of the times but I now keep a shredder in the kitchen as that's where I sort and dispose of unwanted mail. I wanted a low profile but effective shredder to complement the more substantial shredder in my study. This Fellowes P-35C fits the bill perfectly - it is designed as a compact, low volume shredder designed to cope with a maximum of 5 sheets at a time as well as credit cards, staples and small paperclips but nothing tougher than that. It shreds into cross cut form which seems secure enough and comes with a 1 year warranty on the machine and 3 years on the cutters.Having used it for some time now I really like the P-35C - it eats up opened unwanted mail effectively but takes up little space.A particular strength is that if you have children it has both a safety lock switch on the front panel as well as a power on and off switch on the back of it - so if you switch it off it will need a high degree of determination by small hands to turn it on again. The main control follows the usual shredder pattern of off, auto (eg. it comes on if you insert paper) and reverse, which, although I haven't had to use yet, is also useful for the lubrication process. The waste bin is adequate but not huge - if you use the shredder a lot it will fill up quickly but, if it were bigger, the machine would be much bulkier. All we're asking a shredder to do is shred paper, which, compared to other things we can do in the 21st Century sounds low tech. However, I've learnt you have to respect shredders - they'll only last if used as specified and kept well lubricated with suitable shredder oil like that made by Fellowes or Swordfish. The P-35C has to be used for the purpose which it was designed which is light duty shredding - if you put thick unopened pieces of mail into it it will jam and fail. This is a neat, safe, light duty shredder that looks well made and harmonises into a home environment. Provided you use it as intended it should last and it looks much better made than most of the unknown shredder brands I've seen. Recommended.PS. If you buy the white version - the waste hopper is translucent rather than solid white.

The first comment I must make is that my full time job is as security consultant; in fact I am the Cyber Security Consulting Lead for a very large UK company (look me up on the web if you want). Based on that, I so often see where things have gone wrong; from identity theft through to major corporate losses of confidential information. So, the very first comment is that you should buy a shredder, any shredder, for home use and religiously make sure that you shred everything that contains your name or other personal details. Many small scraps of information can easily lead to identity theft. But enough preaching... Now the review of this item. This is a perfectly serviceable shredder designed for low volumes in a home situation. It will take up to 5 sheets of paper at a time (although, like most shredders it does groan if you run at its limit) or a single credit card. It will not shred CDs or the such like.Being a cross cut shredder is is both more secure than a straight cut shredder and, as a bonus, the shreddings pack down much better, meaning that you don't need to empty the bin as often. When you come to empty the bin, the top has a useful handle (not many shredders do have this) to help you lift of the motor and shredding assembly. A nice feature. So, overall, a good solid 5 stars for use in the home environment. If this is for an office, then you will need something more substantial, but this isn't designed or sold for the office, so no stars off for that. One tip, which is true for all shredders; they do need oiling every so often and most seem to appreciate a squirt of WD40 to keep them running smooth and quiet.Recommended.

If you're after a compact, reliable and powerful shredder for small office or home use, then this is a great choice from Fellowes. For the size of the unit, it copes well with wads of up to six sheets of high-quality paper, cross-cutting them for the most secure disposal of your private documents. Added bonus: it's not deafeningly loud in use, either.Although other units might take more thickness, this one hasn't failed to slice through anything within its specs yet - to date, no half-sliced paper or nearly-shredded fails as we've found with a couple of other machines. A glance at beneath the lid reveals the reason: two rows of *very* sharp, steel rotating teeth (be careful when you're unboxing /setting up). To keep things safe day-to-day, there's also a safety lock on the control panel too.The biggest benefit of this unit is the fact that the shredded pieces are nice and small, resulting in a really compact amount of waste in the fairly generous catching bucket. It can prepare a pretty decent amount of material in a very small space for recycling. It's still going strong a month on, so seems like a sturdy, reliable choice for secure shredding. To keep it in tip-top condition, oil is recommended, although this isn't included in the box, so worth considering buying some if the machine will be in frequent use. Otherwise, this offering from a solid brand name is certainly worth the higher cost of strip shredders for the added peace of mind when wasting private documents.

My Fellowes DS-1 shredder is quite a few years old now and has done some good service, and although it still works fairly well I was pleased to be offered this Fellowes Powershred 36 C model to test. This Cross Cut model shreds more securely than my older shredder and turns an A4 sheet into 4mm by 40mm cross cut particles so is ideal for destroying your confidential documents. It will shred for about two minutes at a time before it needs to cool down and you can shred a fair few documents in that time. It is ideal for home use as it has a safety lock in case there are kids around – but it is a model that could be for suitable for light use in a small office too.The shredder is ready to go straight out of the box and is a good compact size – not too big and not too small – the 12 litre bin is large enough to handle around 50 to 60 sheets of A4 paper. I use Fellowes shredder oil to keep my shredders running well and the 355ml bottle I bought a few years ago is still in use and I would recommend it for keeping any shredder working well for as long as possible. The Powershred 36 C is a well made product that works quite well and could help protect you from identity fraud so could prove to be very good value! There are plenty of shredders in this price band, and at around thirty-five pounds currently from Amazon this personal shredder is decent value - if you are looking for a bit of extra shredding security then the Powershred 36 C could be a good choice.

The other people who bought this shredder and gave it a 1 star rating must have really abused it. it is completely designed for occasional use... by that it means shredding things like bills, bank statements, pay slips etc etc. When i first bought this shredder i shredded hundreds of papers in the first day, and it handled 5 in one shred quite happily, though i went to 4 and 3 at a time to be a little friendlier to it. just use your head when using this and read the instructions first, it says do not shred constantly for longer than three minutes. if you do reach three minutes give it a rest and let it cool down, then start again, this will prevent it from over heating and packing up.It shreds credit cards no problem at all, mine is now obliterated and the shredder is still fine, it wouldnt say you can shred credit cards on the box if it didnt work.At the end of the day this is a perfect confetti cut shredder for occasional home use. NOT for office use, and NOT for people who need to shred hundreds of papers in one go, have some patience. Dont buy a shredder designed for occasional home shredding if you need something much heavier duty.

The shredder is aimed at the domestic market for light occasional use. That said, it seems quite powerful compared to our old shredder and is more than capable of going through multiple sheets of paper. The box states that it can handle credit cards, staples and paper clips. Not tried the credit cards but it deals with anything else easily enough. Surprisingly, for its improved power over our existing shredder I would say that its actually quieter than our old one. More of a rumble than the high pitched whine or our old one. Apparently, you can only shred for 2mins continuously before it overheats so if you have lots to shred then that may be an issue but to be honest I've never experiencedthat as I'm not typically forcing it through back to back even if I'm using the shredder over a five minute period. The paper is shredded adequately small so unless your shredding state secrets it achieves its purpose. It looks pretty smart as well. Worth noting that there are other decent shredders in the general price bracket (sub 50 quid) so it may be worth reading around others too.

Powerful enough to happily deal with 6 sheets of paper ( we actually managed 7) but limited to a max 2 minutes of continuous operation, this compact shredder is very much for the occasional light user that is looking for a shredder with a compact footprint. The modestly sized bin does not have a clear viewing panel and it isn’t easy to see how full the bin is getting. A relatively minor issue and unlikely to be a showstopper for the light use this has been designed for.The shredding itself is very effective and it is good to see the safety features included on what is an entry level machine.Noise level was impressively low compared to our existing older machine. We have a number of Fellowes machines at home and work, all of which have performed faultlessly long term even although you are supposed to oil them every time you empty the bin but I must admit we do it probably every 3-4 times. Hopefully this new smal shredder will be just as durable.Would certainly recommend this for an occasional user with small shredding requirements.pact, not too noisy, ideal for home use

I was a little wary of purchasing a low priced shredder after being let down by a poor quality one previously, but was swayed to purchase this one by the good reviews and the fact that it is a well-known brand. I have to say I was not disappointed at all. This is great for shredding the odd few pieces of paper, it also got through a couple of old expired debit cards with no issues at all. It is great for occasional home use.Because my old shredder had broken, I had accumulated quite a pile of documents which needed shredding, more than I would usually have on a day-to-day basis and the only thing to note with this device is that after using it for extended periods of time, the motor starts to get warm and then it will not function correctly. This is not a major issue as after leaving it to cool for half an hour it was good to go again. Therefore I would say it is great for general occasional day-to-day use at home but not for regular continued use, such as in a busy office environment.

This is my second shredder for home use and I have been pleased with it. The benefit over my old shredder is the cross-cut feature, which provides a much more secure shred. It has a fairly similar and acceptable noise level when shredding, but I question the advertised number of sheets it can shred in one go. I tend to put 2-3 sheets through at a time and this seems to be ok. The size of the shredder is nice and compact, with standard forward, back and off buttons with an additional safety lock switch. As will most shredders, it seems, for home use, they are not meant for long use as they overheat quickly (especially if trying to shred 4-5 sheets at a time) - so if you use it for a few sheets a day then it is fine, but if like me you pile up a few weeks worth, it will take a while to get through these, allowing time to shred a dozen or two sheets and then for it to cool down before starting again. Overall, I prefer this to my old shredder.

This is a small shredder aimed at home use and obviously not for a busy office environment. It looks good and being all black, hides away well in a corner or by the side of a desk. Its basically for those who want to shred personal details in correspondence, bills etc. It does this very well and the only criticism I have is that it is a bit noisy. It feels like it is running away with itself and makes more noise than necessary - but really this doesn't matter as long as it keeps doing the job.The unit can be locked for ultimate safety, when you may have young children nearby and it then has controls for on, off and reverse - to clear jams. It has a convenient handle on the top which helps when getting rid of the contents. It will shred credit cards and deals with these just as well. All in all a useful addition to a home/office set up and is compact and unobtrusive, when not in use

I've been using this shredder most days of the week for a month. I know that's not a long time, but it's been perfect for me so far.The blades are metal, which allayed my fears of plastic ones wearing out quickly, and using the shredder oil as per the instructions has kept it running smoothly (you can notice a slight change in noise - it's marginally smoother-sounding - after oiling). If you try to shred 5 sheets of office paper you can hear that it's working hard, so I've been putting 3 or 4 through at a time and it sounds and works great like that. The waste bin is a reasonable size unless you're shredding loads of papers. It's clearly sold as a home shredder and says it isn't made for home office use,so don't expect it to hold up to higher-intensity use.UPDATE APRIL 2013: still going strong! shredding credit card and bank statements fairly regularly (home use, NOT office).

Well speak as you find. I've had one of these for the last six years before it finally gave up the ghost, So it goes without saying that I have just replaced it with an identical one at a very good price from Amazon. In fact it was a lot cheaper than I paid then and was £14 less than what others are charging at the moment. Myself I use it quite frequently, although I don't shred multiple sheets at a time in which case it is never overloaded. So if you need to do this then perhaps you should look for a more substantial one as some reviewers seem to have had problems with this. Having said that I did research other more expensive shredders and there appears to be negative reviews on them all so why pay eye watering prices for those,I don't see the point. I think it is a nice practical home shredder which I would definitely recommend

Quiet, efficient and a must in today's environment.Sits nicely in any room, doesn't require much space. Ours is stored in a little space under our table in the office. So easy to use. Does exactly what it should do and has a surprisingly large storage space for such a little item.Does shred credit cards and things with ease and as for paper, its like giving candy to a child.Would recommend this item to anyone and everyone who receives letters and doesn't want their identity to be stolen. Just shred the address details and other parts of any unwanted document sent via the post.Don't load more than 4 pieces of A4 paper at a time, it doesn't like it and do use the Swordfish Shredder Lubricant when necessary,we worked it out to use it once a week if using the shredder a lot in that week, however, use your own judgement.

Bought in a local supermarkTe as I needed a shredder urgently having overloaded my previous shredder to failure. The previous shredder was bought 2 years ago at twice the price and is currently on Amazon at three times the price of this one but is not 2 or 3 times better. So far, having learned the lesson not to feed too many sheets for too long, its working fine.Having once had a "lift-off" shredder (the last one had a wheeled bin) I worried about an awkward heavy lift, however this one has a convenient finger grip. The bin is a little lacking in height, therefore volume, however this does make it easier to empty into a supermarket carrier bag.I agree with the earlier comment about the pointless "safety lock".Was aware it didn't have a CD shredder but I haven't stored data to CD for at least a year.
