UPDATE: It's now nearly a year and a half since the original review, and the shredder is still going strong. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!The shredder arrived in a securely packaged box and at first glance looks very nicely designed. The basket is a gloss black with a stylish little see-through window to let you know how full it is getting. The top is a matt-black with a clear, well laid out set of holes for shredding stuff!I had built up quite a pile of bank statements, etc., for shredding so eagerly got to work when this arrived. The METAL blades (not plastic like some other, cheaper shredders) make an awesome `shredding' noise and it seems perfectly happy with about 4 sheets at a time, shredding and cross-cutting with no problems at all. The packaging does advertise that it can take 8 sheets, but when I tried 8 (using thin, cheapish printer paper) it was obvious that the motor was straining quite considerably - it really slowed down and the cross-cut did not work particularly well. However, it DID manage it and didn't die. I will probably keep to just a couple of sheets at a time. There is a separate slot for shredding CDs / DVDs. This easily crunches up 1x CD at a time, tearing it into four strips (no cross-cut on the CD shredder). I like that it is separate to the main shredder as I won't feel too apprehensive about ruining the paper-cutting blades by putting CDs in them. My only niggle with this is that the CDs fall into the same bin as the paper (there isn't a separate bit to `catch' them), meaning the CDs have to be picked out if you want to recycle the paper/use it as hamster bedding..., and similarly with any credit cards you shred through the main blades. Still, there is no way CDs or credit cards are readable after going through this beast! What you can't see from the images, are that along the front edge of the main shredder hole, there is a line of useful icons which let you know what you should not put in the shredder:- No ties- No Small children or toys- No shirts- No aerosol cans- No screwdrivers- No fingersI am glad of this as it will help me avoid potentially embarrassing mistakes...Lastly, it could be a little bit easier to get the paper into the main shredder -the grey handle/safety bit means that you can't shove the paper in vertically downward, and have to feed it a bit more carefully at a slight angle. After a couple of attempts however, you get used to this. Overall, despite a couple of minor points, it is sturdy and looks pretty snazzy in the home office, and I find myself looking for things continually just to get that satisfying crunchy shreddy noise!! Recommended.

Because of some reviews here suggesting the life of this product can be unacceptably short, I have given it almost five months' use before posting my review.Without breaking the rules about feeding only a maximum of eight sheets at once, and avoiding plastic film and sheets of self-adhesive labels (plenty of self-adhesive labels go through attached to envelopes or thin card), I have given it lots of work, some of it so intensively I expected the thermal cut-out to activate - but it didn't. I have experienced no problems at all.For the sake of this review I have also put through an unwanted CD and a few old credit cards, and it has happily chewed those up too. However, those functions are not what I bought the machine for and the amount of work I have imposed on it with those does not amount to a full test. Since my shredded paper goes for composting, in which shreds of CD and Credit Card are not wanted, shredding those items involves emptying the bin both before and afterwards, so I am in practice more likely to use scissors on credit cards. Unwanted CDs are a rarity with me anyway. The shred of paper produced can be as large as 47mm x 6mm. With items such as letters and bank statements printed on A4 paper, nobody is likely to learn much from just one strip. But if something is printed across the length of a page, key words or figures might be read - I have chanced to see my own name on a single strip - and whichever way a sheet is printed it could conceivably be pieced together again. That would not be a huge job if there was not much waste in the bin (approx. 230 shreds per A4 sheet). So if your waste is seriously confidential, go for a shredder that makes confetti. For most of the rest of us, this is good enough for home use with a view to making identity theft a bit less likely and preventing curious eyes from happening to discover your credit card balance.

As with all shredders, it is necessary to pay special attention to the manufacturers instructions. All shredders can be temperamental if used in the wrong way. This shredder works well, when used correctly. I am cautious with shredders, so I have only been feeding it up to 5 x 80gsm sheets, which it eats fine. It will eat credit cards and cds/dvds as well. What impresses me, is how quickly it eats paper. Some shredders can be slow, but this one is fast. Pay particilar attention though, when replacing the shredder on top of the bin. If you put it round the wrong way, the shredder won't work. You must make sure it sits flush with the bucket! It's not rocket science, just common sense.Noise wise,it isn't the quietest on the market, but at the price, it's great value and seems to work well. I have shredded a mound of stuff in the last day and it's worked fine. If it gets too hot, it will cut out and you'll have to leave it for about an hour to cool down, before recommencing again. It's a good size too... Fits between two desks and will take a lot of paper before emptying the bucket. This is a quality made shredder that is good value for money and will last if used correctly.UPDATE...October, 2019 (7 years and 3 months since purchase). Incredibly this machine is still going strong!! I still use the machine, on average three to four times a week. It still shreds perfectly. Still shreds plastic cards and DVDs. I maintain it, using the recommended lubrication sheets, about every 6 - 8 months. Incredible machine. Far out weighed the length of time I thought I'd get from it!

I bought this shredder in May and was very pleased with it - a huge improvement on my old one, fast and efficient. The CD shredder is a nice extra. However, after about six weeks it just stopped working. One day it was fine, the next day, nothing.I was too late to return it to Amazon so after a few weeks more I finally got round to contacting the manufacturer, who replied within a couple of hours. The problem is very simple - the safety cutout was activated because I hadn't placed the motor unit correctly onto the bin. I'll quote the email I was sent, as it explains clearly and in detail:"Ensure the viewing window of the waste bin faces forward and the shredder head is placed on the bin as shown in the image. The safety cut out is on the back of the shredder, the semi circular recess on the waste bin must slot inside the semicircular shape on the back of the shredder head to deactivate the safety cut out. Please ensure the semicircular recess on the bin is not outside the shredder head or that the shredder head is not resting on top of the semicircular recess on the bin. When correctly fitted there should be no gap between the shredder head and the waste bin, and the fitting should be flush all around the shredder."10 seconds later, my shredder was working again. Still delighted with it, but I give it four stars rather than five because I would have been saved the bother if the instruction leaflet had been clearer on this.

I needed a shredder to shred the typical household things, like receipts and bank statements, and this does the job, whilst looking good.PROS:- Sturdy and solid build. The head is rather heavy, but has an aesthetic handle at the top to lift it from the bin;- Nice sleek design (doesn't look "officey" at all);- Shreds the paper into really tiny pieces, which was a concern with a non-cross cut shredder. If I had hamsters, they would have a happy home;- It handles many receipts & paper at one go at a good speed - I do not tend to feed it much at one go (just a personal preference), but the heavy head definitely has a manly enough shredder;- The new engine inside smells quite nice when you first start using it;- It shreds CDs.It has a nice guard on the CD shredder, too;CONS:- I cannot see any drawbacks to it right now. It's exactly what I needed.NOTE: When shredding bank statements (around 4 sheets), do not fold them, as this can give the shredder a bit of a hard time. This is NOT the shredders' fault, as it clearly states that it can "only" take up to 8 sheets, which is really great. I managed to temporarily jam it by feeding it a folded 4 sheet bank statement, but it was easily resolved by pressing the Auto and Reverse buttons.

Good looking good cross-cutting paper shredder that can also cut up CD/DVDs and Credit CardsStarting at the bottom: the bin is a good size for domestic and small office use. I like that it is solid (mesh ones release paper dust) and there is a window through which you can see how full it is. If I am being picky: the base construction is just a shade on the soft side and would benefit from a slight increase in plastic thickness - but it is not a big criticism. The lid fits snugly and easily, paper is easily inserted, and the shredder sits nicely under the desk. I haven't counted sheets, but it seems to cut well several sheets at a time. CDs and DVDs are chopped into a few large pieces rather than smashed into tiny pieces. For highly sensitive material one would still recommend the put-in-a-strong-bag-and-smash-to-bits-with-hammer method, but for general material this is very easy to use: drop in the CD and less than a second later the job is done and without any risk of flying splinters. All in all a very good, modestly priced and efficient shredder. Only had it a few days so i cannot comment on longevity or reliability, but very pleasing so far.

This shredder does a good job of reducing bank statements and confidential documents into small pieces as it has a cross-cut blade as well as a strip blade. It works best with 4 or 5 sheets of 80g/m2 paper. It will handle 8, but with a struggle, and the motor gets quite warm. It shreds old credit cards a treat! The waste bin must be emptied frequently and immediately it becomes full; that is when the waste is above the small window in the bin. I found when doing a lot of shredding that when the bin becomes overfull the rotating shredder blades can pick up the waste and feed it back into the cutters and jam the shredder. I had to lift off the cutter/motor head, invert it on a folded towel, and take out the 6 crosspoint screws to remove the cover to clear the cutter feed. Removing the 6 screws invalidates the warranty, by the way. I reassembled the cutter cover after clearing and now the shredder works fine. Just be aware of this potential problem and make sure that the safety switch is correctly reinstalled in its housing when replacing the cover. I can recommend this shredder for domestic office use.

Pretty happy with this. Gave it 4 stars rather than 5 only because I haven't had it long enough to see how it lasts.Arrived promptly, good price, good neat shape, easy enough to empty, decent-sized viewing window to see when it's getting full, and one of the few in this price range that also shreds credit cards and CDs. I had several old CDs to get rid of and was surprised that it was quite hard to find a reasonably-sized and reasonably-priced shredder that would take care of them as well as doing credit cards. One small gripe is that there's no handle to lift it - the handle on the top removes the lid only, so if you need to move it, you have to grasp it by the body and take care not to let it drop. It's heavy-ish, as these things are, but not too heavy, so this isn't a big deal. A couple of lugs on the side to lift it would have been ideal. But overall I'm happy with it, and so far it's a lot less temperamental and apparently sturdier than my previous one which was a good make but turned out to be a pain in the neck, taking far less paper at one go, and getting constant overheating and paper jams.

The first Aurora AS800CD Cross Cut Paper Shredder machine worked fine initially, but didn't like having a credit card shredded in spite of the claims made. One new fuse later (and a 12 hour rest), it stopped again when several sheets of paper went through, and didn't want to start again. Contacting the manufacturer by email resulted in a replacement machine arriving very speedily so full marks to them.We are now treating it more cautiously, only putting 2 or 3 sheets through at one time, because if 5 sheets fold back on themselves this can become too much. It might be that we could treat it more robustly but we don't want to risk it,and it doesn't matter that much - it's easy enough to cut up a credit card with scissors. The machine capacity is good as it takes a lot of shredded paper before needing to be emptied, and the viewing window is useful. At this price, it's an improvement on what we had before, but appears to need careful handling, so while it's fine for our home office, it may not be suitable for constant heavy use.

My son purchased an Aurora AS800CD Cross Cut Shredder at my request for my birthday last year. It performed perfectly until Sunday June 30th when it just stopped cutting. I e-mailed Aurora Monday morning, received an reply within an hour making a couple of suggestions as to what I could do to try to start the machine again. However they didn't work, so they asked how long I had had the shredder, which was just a few days short of a year. Aurora then said if I could let them have Amazon's despatch e-mail of this product to me as it was still in guarantee, they would replace it for me. Had to wait for my son to send this to them which he did Tuesday morning. 48 hours later a new Shredder was delivered to my home from Aurora. All this time their customer care kept in contact with both my son and myself keeping us aware of progress. I shall certainly not hesitate to buy Aurora products again, and will recommend them to friends without hesitation, hence this review for Amazon customers who may be deciding on a product.

This shredder replaced a similar-size Fellows model which had stripped a gear. The Aurora has now been in use in a busy home office for about 6 weeks, so longevity has not been tested yet. It can handle several sheets of paper simultaneously, without sounding strained. The previous model was rated for about 5 sheets, but struggled with more than one. There is a clear windows in the catch bin, which helps judge when to empty the bin and confirms that shreds are falling clear of the cutting head. The previous model jammed very easily, particularly on short slips of paper, such as credit card receipts. The Aurora has no such problem. The lifting handle built into the head makes emptying the bin much easier, even though it is a lift-off, rather than slide out design. We have not experienced any problem in engaging the safety cutout when replacing the head, despite reports in other reviews.Altogether, the Aurora has performed well during our ownership and I would recommend it for light to medium duty.

Recieved this recently and i have to say i am very pleased with my purchase, and i will consider buying more for a few friends who i know are in need of a relaiable shredder.Firsty i think it looks really nice - it has a very shiny black and silver finish which you can just about see in the photos, in reality this looks even better and its quite eyecatching.I have shredded all of the junk mail that had built up, and the shredder ate it all without flinching. It seems quieter than i had expected also, the handle is a nice touch and makes emptying easy. I also like the separate slot for shredding CD's which should protect the main shredder although i haven't had need to shred CD's.On the downside i guess the bin could be a little bigger, but the viewing window allows you to see whats going on there - so really it's not an issue.I'm a new customer to Amazon and all i can say is that i am very impressed.

I purchased the Aurora AS800CD in 2011 and it has been in use in my home office for 5 years until the motor casing broke. It chews its way through any reasonable multiple quantity of thin/thick paper incl. staples, sticky tape//labels etc. In fact over 5 years i have found nothing to complain about. The motor seems very rugged and just keeps on going, albeit slightly slower for 8 or so sheets, until it finished the job. I have never found it overheated. I tried a different replacement product this year (2016), a Texet, but it had a small throat so was difficult to load and took fewer sheets. So I was really happy to find the Aurora was still available.Five years good service from a machine costing just over thirty quid seems fine to me. I'm afraid i don't understand the negative reviews from some purchasers.

I bought this to replace a Fellowes shredder which had always been slow and unhappy shredding more than 2 sheets of A4 and eventually with a big flash and puff of smoke, it died! This Aurora shredder is a delight to use. It's fast, the viewing window lets you see when it's time to empty, the handle on the top makes it easy to remove the top for emptying and I am very impressed with its performance. I shall take care not to overload but so far it has not shown any signs of strain or overheating, even after shredding enough documents to fill a big refuse sack. I bought some shredder oil at the same time but when the shredder arrived, the instructions said it did not need lubricating but might benefit from some!!I'll see how it goes and give it a squirt of oil if I think it needs it.
