I bought this item 13 months ago. It worked like a dream and I have been very happy with it in every respect. It has chomped its way through all of the old papers taken from my parent's house clearance and all of my old papers and statements; not to mention many old credit cards and some DVDs too. Last week it stopped working for exactly the same reason as those of all of the other negative reviewers of the product. The paper feed sensor or circuitry has failed. I contacted Aurora for parts availability. I await a response...UPDATE - Five days later. And quite a response it was too... Aurora contacted me and stated that there had been a batch of these units manufactured with a defective part and that this problem has been rectified. They offered to replace the unit unconditionally, even though it was 13 months old. A brand new unit arrived today, delivered by next day delivery courier.I must reiterate that I was very happy with the unit until it broke down. The customer service I have received subsequently from Aurora has been exemplary. I can't offer five stars simply because it did break down but I am now a very content customer. I would definitely buy an Aurora product again, safe in the knowledge that I wont be left high and dry if something goes wrong. Well done Aurora and thank you.UPDATE 2014It is now 2014 and my machine managed to strip the teeth off of the main drive wheel. I really thought that it was curtains for the machine and read of other cases where this had happened and where the owners had been unable to get replacement spares (even though it is easy to repair and to replace parts) and had given this product a poor review. I wasn't expecting much but checked for Aurora UK on that well known search engine and found them easily. A quick email and a photo of the affected part had a replacement on its way, free of charge, inside 48 hours. That is twice now that Aurora customer support has been nothing short of way beyond what was necessary. I was very happy to pay for replacement parts given that the machine is over three years old!My machine is now back up and running. It does a great job, exactly what it describes and if you are unfortunate to get a problem, Aurora customer services gets six stars from me. Carlsberg don't make shredders, but if they did, they would have serious competition from this company for the accolade of best ... This is Quite simply the best shredder I have ever owned and probably the best customer services I have experienced too. Well done aurora.

I am working through my mother's estate with papers back to the 1940’s; a wheelie bin will be filled several times over so a shredder with thermal cutout was essential and I required a reverse action switch based on past experience. Bought a £150 + shredder at what seemed an "end of line" reduced cost (my thinking - if its retail cost was that high it must be good and it had the required extras) which was advertised to do 4 sheets only to find on arrival the instructions stated maximum of 2 sheets. I arranged for its return then tried again. This Aurora shredder was my choice at a similar cost and it is fantastic, well made, very capable, fitted with a thermal cutout, anti jam facility and misaligned bin cutout. The mechanism makes the other shredders I've used look like toys, being extremely solidly manufactured. It is heavy but that's obviously because the cutting disks are of a size to give them strength for the task. I’ve tried to avoid the word beefy but it would be appropriate.By accepting 10 sheets I have been able to just grab a pile of papers, shove a batch in the slot judging that I didn't have too many sheets and keep going until the bin was full. It was then empty the bin and carry on. No need to worry about different paper weights or the odd staple, the shredder accepting the lot, never complaining or cutting out due to overheating. The only drawback is the lack of a switch to operate manually to clear the mechanism of paper. However, the paper detect switch is deep in the slot but also well away from the shredding action cutters. Pushing a sheet of paper a short way into the slot activates the cutters without them grabbing the paper. Problem solved, impressively - a good design.Credit cards and CD/DVD's are dealt with very easily.I have no reason not to highly recommend this shredder. It has eaten over 70 years worth of paper, in some cases working continuously without a break for considerable periods of time, with no counting sheets before entering the mouth of the shredder. A shredder definitely fit for purpose.

I had a light-weight, very low-volume paper shredder that only cut in one direction, but having a backlog of of Tax, VAT, bank and private papers to get rid of decided to get this heavier duty shredder. I'm very pleased with the Aurora. It has a solid build and is quite heavy with most the weight in the shredder lid, however the unit is stable with no tendency to topple over. The shredder-part fits firmly into the top of the capacious bucket and doesn't wobble as it works. I particularly like the cross-cutting of the paper as, not only does that make piecing together well-nigh impossible, it also means that the shredded paper takes up far less space than when merely shredded into strips.Emptying the bucket is easy as there's a handle in the lid. The unit is relatively quiet in operation and coped easily with small staples and wads of 9 or ten sheets at a time and with lots of different sizes and types of paper. I had a bit of a binge of shredding on my first day, exceeding the recommended usage, but it survived with no problem. I did give it rests between batches as I searched for more documents to shred. It has a safety cut-out if one does overuse and it also stops to warn that the bucket is full. For the price I think it's an excellent product and ideal for a small business or person, like me, with a backlog of documents. We're all a bit paranoid about identity theft and this device helps to reduce the amount of sensitive information that could get into the wrong hands.

After previously having a low cost shredder from Argos which failed twice after not much use, I decided to pay a bit more, having a suitcase full of old bank statements and credit card statements to get rid of. First impression, much more solid and weighty than the previous rubbish! In particular, the plastic combs look strong enough to work without breaking off and jamming the unit. It has now done what it was bought to do and filled 2 wheelie bins with shredded paper (amazing how much additional volume paper occupies when shredded). However, learning from the previous unit, which failed due to a stripped plastic gear, I patiently shredded 2-3 pages at a time and removed the staples to prevent jamming and blunting the blades. It encourages you to shred CD's .Why? Surely 5 seconds with a plastic pan scrub will securely remove the data surface from the CD. I suspect that this unit is so robust that the manufacturer can only see repeat sales by encouraging people to stress the unit. Other tips for using it - lift the shredder unit from the box every 10 pages or so and push the pile of confetti down. This stops bits sticking in the blades and being pulled out when the unit is removed from the bin. Happy with it? Yes

I read a lot of reviews about this shredder as well as similar products. I was apprehensive about getting this model considering some of the negative comments but decided that I really needed a shredder to help protect privacy.I must say I am very impressed with this shredder, and as long as I use it sensibly I don't see it causing any issues. The shredder unit fits on top of the bin snuggly. It is easy to tell the front of the bin due to the triangular window. There is no funny lug that the shredder unit needs to catch into. I have shred from single sheets to 6 at a time. I would imagine that shredding close to the maximum of 10 sheets would slow operation down, and possibly cause the over-heat cutout to operate if used at this volume consistently. I have happily used the shredder for an hour + continuously by shredding no more than 3 sheets at once.I have successfully shredded credit cards as well. I haven't tried shredding CDs/DVDs yet but have no reason to believe it won't cope. When not in use I sit the shredder unit inside it's bin and then tuck it unbtrusively beside a small set of drawers. If I needed to buy another shredder this would be the one, and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

This shredder has the power to get rid of all those pieces of ID and personal data that are accumulated. The 10 sheet capacity makes short work of any paperwork that needs to be destroyed and will happily 'munch' its way through a considerable amount of the sort of junk mail etc that seems to arrive with personal details on.The manufacturer recommends that a single 'duty cycle' is restricted to 5 minutes - this is usually sufficient for most purposes. What makes this a good product though is th ability to demolish data dvds and cds along with debit/credit cards.I was a bit sceptical at first of the cd shredding ability, but it has totally lived up to it's promise - the backups taken from old computers and the now out of date information that has to be kept from falling into the hands of those who would dearly like to use it for their own nefarious purposes - are reduced to plastic chips approximately 25mm x 6mm in seconds! Result! The only thing that loses this a star is the operation noise - as with all shredders, it is a bit intruive. That said, if asked, yes, I would buy it again.

So far it is working very well with no paper jams or blockages.A shame that the 'carry handle' is 'off centre' and makes lifting the machinery box awkward. Also a shame that the paper bin has insufficiently wide lips since this makes lifting the whole assembly very difficult for folk who do not have strong fingers. Had the lip been around three times wider with a downward curl on the outer edges the problem could be avoided. As for shredding ....... it is great!!What I am really looking for is a shredder where the bin is in two parts. The top part being a mounting ring with a set of four legs and the lower part being a bin. This way, for bigger shredding jobs, I could shred directly into a 'bin liner'with a much larger capacity, thus avoiding all the cleaning up when the bin is full. Hey ho .. life is never perfect!!!In the mean time, most certainly to be recommended (I speak from 5 shredders worth of experience!!)Provided the cutting head holds up I'd hope to be able to use it for quite some time!

I purchaed this shredder based on other reviews and I have not been dissappointed. I have had the shredder for over 12 months now and it is still working well. Prior to this I had a heavy duty shredder that I actually paid a higher price for and this one is much better. For general home office use I would recommend this equipment.Further update on 12.02.12 - Unfortunately the shredder developed an electronic fault whereby it would would only work in reverse mode and give a "pulse" when I initially put in the paper. I cleaned the sensors but this did not correct the problem. The mechanics of the shredder were however still working well. For this reason I have lowered the score to four stars as it is otherwise a very good shredder for general home use and the problem I had may have been a random fault. I am going to go for a more expensive office type shredder which appears to get very good reviews but If my budget was limited I would purchase the same Aurora shredder again.

The item I bought was listed as used (customer return?). It came without a destruction manual but was about £10 cheaper than full list price. Cosmetically it looks unused and it seems to work fine. However, the motor runs continuously in the auto position. This doesn't bother me as I can turn it off; but is possibly the reason why it was available in used condition. Without a manual it's difficult to be sure about this. (After about 3 months use the fault corrected itself.)It's much more powerful and a bit larger than its Textet predecessor, which eventually digested its own internals in a fairly spectacular way.It coped well with a three month backlog of shredding seven or eight sheets at a time.It can cope with ten sheets at a time but why risk overloading it? As long as it lasts longer than three years I'll be happy. I also bought some shredder oil to keep it 'regular'. The last thing you want is a constipated shredder.

I bought one of these for my work office in November 2011 and it has worked perfectly over the last 20 months so I've just ordered a second one for my home office. As claimed it does indeed chew its way quite happily through staples and copes with several pieces of paper at a time. Unlike my previous shredder I never need to unclog the cutting mechanism. It is worth noting that the 10 sheet capacity is for 75 gsm paper which is the typical paper weight in North America. European paper is usually 80 gsm or 90 gsm so the recommended maximum capacity is probably best considered as 8 sheets. I have tried 10 sheets at a time though and it does work but you can tell it is beginning to struggle.I've not known this shredder to jam or overheat at all in the 20 months I have been using it.As others have said it has a good capacity bin, shreds the paper finely and (in my view) looks a nice piece of equipment.

Had to replace a Fellowes that had just one plastic gear gouged out by a metal gear; and no spares! The whole thing had to be consigned to metal recycling. The big advantage of the Aurora is that it has a good base and so it does not topple over at the slightest kick. Also the handle to lift it from the bin is very helpful in this respect. If you value your feet, think of this aspect. It has a higher pitched noise but works very well and handles CDs with ease. It looks like it will last. The free delivery from Amazon was quicker than promised; but note that delivery period counts from day of dispatch and that can be 3-4 days from date of order.Since my review above I had a sensor problem recently.Emailed Aurora and got a reply within hours. The unit was replaced immediately and they collected the faulty one -all free of charge. An excellent customer service from Aurora.

Yes, after a year of working well, the sensor gave out. When you insert a sheet of paper, the motor starts but stops again virtually immediately. Of course, it works fine in reverse. I guess it's not actually the sensor itself but the circuit board that's dodgy. However, I left a message on Aurora's web site detailing the problem and got a very quick reply saying that, even though the product was out of warranty, if I emailed the Amazon order confirmation they would send me a replacement. Sure enough, the day after they received my email, a replacement arrived by FedEx. That's very impressive customer service. Aurora say they are happy to offer a replacement to anyone with a similar problem. The product itself is excellent and, with this level of support, I now feel I can wholeheartedly recommend this shredder and have altered my star rating accordingly.

I purchesed an Aurora AS1018CD sheredder in February this year. For some reason it stopped working - except for the reverse gear after, only two uses. None of which were heavy or contained CDs or Credit Cards. I suspect the fault was with the switch as every thing else appeared in order and as I say the reverse gear worked so there was no problem with the power.I contacted Aurora directly by email from their web site and explained the problem. I supplied the Amazon receipt on request and a replacemment shreder arrived within a couple of days. They didnt even ask for the old one back. Any product from anywhere can break down or aquire a fault. Its how that problem is dealt with which separates the wheat from the chaf and I have no complaints whats so ever with this company. easy to contact, fast response and even faster replacement. Highly recomended.

Like others on here, I was looking for a shredder that I could rely on. I've previously used the £2.50 bargain bin specials, but was always ultimately disappointed with their performance. Looking at the reviews for this shredder got me to finally spend a bit more on a higher quality unit, resulting in one very satisfied customer. Gone are the days when I had to wait 10 minutes plus for one of those overheated units to cool down enough to use again. On my first use I put through enough paper to completely fill the collection bucket on the Aurora (which is a reasonable size by the way), without a hint of any overheating.I don't know how this shredder would cope if you threw a large amount of paper at it,but if you have a year or so of receipt & bills etc.like I did, then I can recommend this to you with no hesitation.

I bought this shredder in May this year and have been extremely happy with its performance, until last Saturday, when it suddenly refused to accept any paper although it would reverse. After checking everything, I emailed the manufacturer, who replied instantly, asking for a copy of the delivery note. I returned this as an attachment and again received a reply saying that a replacement would be sent via Fedex on Monday. It is now 11.00 on Tuesday and the replacement has arrived. It is difficult to imagine a more acceptable standard of service for faulty goods and I feel many others could strive to achieve such a level of customer satisfaction. I have seen that a few reviews have complained about this product because of a similar fault, but for their level of service I don't hesitate to give 5 stars to Aurora.
