This is the third shredder I've had over the years and this does seem to be the best. The cutter assembly seems much stronger - it has metal bars joining the two end plates, whereas my previous shredder (a Fellowes, which was NOT a cheapo job) had plastic. So I am optimistic. It is fairly noisy - it could not be used right next to someone who was on the phone. The instructions are very clear. I noticed that an earlier reviewer said it was not clear how to attach the castors. Please believe me - it's obvious ! Push the shaft of the castor into the hole - job done. Because the cutters run across the front it is easier to clear any paper from them underneath. My old shredder had cutters running back to front so it was difficult to see the far end of the cutters and clear them. All in all it's very easy to use. The basket is roomy and the shreddings seem to fall evenly rather than in a hill in the middle.Another reviewer said that there was paper in the cutter when it was unpacked. Indeed there were one or two small pieces in the cutter of mine - but it had been clearly tested in the factory, which I reckon is a good thing. I also noticed that one review a said it only cut into straight strips. I can confirm that this is definitely a cross cut shredder, although the ends are cut at right angles not into a diamond shape. The packaging was pretty good - the original manufacturer's box which was tightly enclosed in a very sturdy cardboard box. I could imagine though that if it were dropped from a significant height some damage might result - the cutter assembly is quite heavy. Mine was fine. The key to living in harmony with a shredder seems to be regular oiling so I bought some with it. Also never let the basket get so full that the shreddings cannot fall clear of the cutters. That will jam it up in no time and dismay will result. One criticism of all shredders - NONE seem to handle the number of pages which their sales blurb quotes - surely there should be an industry standard and trades description requirements.

I only received the shredder yesterday, replacing a much smaller less powerful model that just stopped working. The top is heavy but once in place doesn't need to be removed and it makes the unit sturdy. The access to the shredded paper is from the front, the drawer sliding out ,for emptying. It doesn't appear to show in the instructions that the unit doesn't work unless the drawer unit is in place. This is of course a safety feature and well worth mentioning. However it caused a few anxious moments until we discovered it. The shredder has a 'cross cut' feature, cutting the paper into narrow short pieces. This is ideal because the paper drops straight to the bottom, preventing clogging in the cutters. The pull out drawer has a see through panel so you can see when it is getting full. The shredder has four castors on the bottom, making good manoevrability. The castors are packed separately and just need firm pressure to put them in place. No need to bang them in place! When the shredder is ready, it shows a green light. There is also another light that will show if the unit jams. We don't expect that to happen as although it shows '10 sheet maximum', we have no plans to use it to its maximum. As we live in Spain and had this delivered from the UK, we usually have to change the plug to the European standard. It was a great surprise when we loosened the main screw and the plug hinged open. Irevealing a European plug. An amazing design feature allowing it to be easily used in the UK and Europe as well. Another feature not obviously displayed. This is by far the best shredder we have bought so far and well worth the higher price tag. If you buy a cheap shredder you will only end up buying a new one regularly as most of them are not up to the job of even a small independant office. I expect this one to last much longer.

I've had this shredder now for nearly 6 years, so it must be doing something right!Home shredders are always underpowered compared with office ones and can't take the stick that you'd give a shredder at work.My previous one was a Fellowes at about the same price, and it really was rubbish - overheated, jammed, and was basically useless. This one is better - FOR A HOME SHREDDER - but don't get silly and try to push it to what the makers say it will do. Just like cars and most other things you buy, the manufacturer figures aren't what you get in real life.I never give it more than half a dozen sheets at a time, which it handles fine. It takes credit cards too in a slot in the middle. It's a bit noisy, but then cross cutting paper is hard work. The cabinet is a bit flimsy to support the cutting head which is heavy metal, but just about adequate.I keep the shredder on a carpet, so the castors won't work. And I oil it two or three times a year, that's all - can't be bothered to spend my life oiling shredders.I fit the pull-out drawer in mine with a bin-liner, so it's much easier to empty and just put the binbag in the recycling without getting bits of paper everywhere.I've overloaded it, jammed it with big bunches of paper, used it for an hour at a time, and it still comes back fighting. So if you remember that it's a HOME shredder, not a heavy-duty office job, then it will serve you well.

I've worked from home for the last 20 years, and had several 'home paper shredders' in my time. I bought my first Swordfish 1000XC shredder back in Apr-2011....on the back of a Which? Best Buy recommendation. Almost 9 years on, and it is still providing excellent service today (Dec-2019). These quality shredders are relatively quiet, have a large bin capacity, and manage routine home shredding tasks with ease. I rarely push more than 5-6 sheets through at any one time.I'm not one for writing product reviews, but a recent mishap saw me damaging the bin that captures the shredded paper beyond economic repair. I contacted the Swordfish Support Team, fully expecting to be told that they don't provide replacement parts,or that the cost of a replacement was so high that it'd be more cost-effective to buy a completely new shredder. (The shredder has been that good, I'd have bought the same model again). However, the Support Team (Angela and Jackie) provided top-class support - they were courteous and patient with me, managed to find a spare waste bin within the factory, and arranged for speedy delivery to me. All that they asked of me, was that I pay the small DHL delivery charge. Happy days :-)In my opinion, these are quality shredders that are backed-up by a World-class support team. I have no hesitation in recommending the product and the company.

We have had 2 previous shredders that have needed frequent disassembling to extract the built up of paper within the mechanism. The first one was a strip shredder and it jammed if you put an envelope through it. The last was a cross-cut shredder that could cope (just) with an envelope, but if you shredded more than about 20 pages one after the other, you had to run it in reverse for a while then manually try to dislodge loads of strips. Frankly they have been more of a curse than a benefit so far. When I bought this shredder I decided to go a bit more up-market hoping for better reliability and longevity. In my experience no shredder can shred the number of pages it is rated for - usually about half that number shows significant struggling. This one seems to cope better than most I have used (and certainly much better than the 2 I have owned). It is also significantly quieter than the previous ones - only bettered in this respect by a MUCH more expensive and larger office one. I have yet to have it jam at all, and the paper appears not to squeeze into the mechanism too much. I have hopes that it will be much easier to use over the long term than my old ones, so I am happy with my purchase. Shredding has almost become pleasurable!

Works very well. I bought some oil that you squirt on to a piece of paper which needs to be shredded - easy way to oil and clean the cogs.Only thing that did not work so well was shredding newspaper - it clogged up the cutters a bit as it is so thin and fluffy. We got this to shred our paper for the compost which is why I tried newspaper. All the other stuff is shredded brilliantly. We bought this machine in march 2009 and it has now given up we think - Dec 2015 so I am writing an update.Works well if you know a few quirks. We now keep paper from the 2 far edges of the cutters (fold A4 in half) as the rods each end get clogged up with paper otherwise. It takes a while with a screw driver or other strong object to clear it as it binds round the bar very tightly. That is the only reason we took the heavy machine top off which led to a small accident trying to replace the top one day. I dropped it and it cracked the base the collecter sits on. We managed to sort that and continue using it for 2 more years. It has now died as it will work in reverse but not forward so can not do its job - worked 6 years 9 months.

after years of using Fellows brand shredders which always went wrong after a few months of low usage I wanted to try a different brand. This time after reading the reviews on Amazon I decided to go for the swordfish 1000xc cross cutter shredder. What a pleasant surprise when it arrived. It was well made and a good size for my home office. Not too large and not too small. After using it for the first time I could see it was a solid and very good shredder. It was quiet and cut everything I put in it without jamming or overheating. It also stopped automatically. All of my previous Fellows shredders ( and they were top end shredders)lost the ability to stop automatically after each paper shred within a few months of my ownership. The Fellows shredders also kept jamming after several loads of paper.I had put up with this for years of having to turn the forward/revere switch to off after each use. The swordfish shredder is a very good product and I would strongly recommend it. I use it in my home office for low to medium use shredding.I am so pleased that I went for this make and model.

I've had several cheapo shredders and all failed miserably within a couple of weeks. To be honest, I did not really think paying more would necessarily mean getting a decent device that reliably does what it says on the tin. I need not have worried. This shredder is just great. It has a really usefully sized hopper for colecting all that shredded paper, as well as thoughtfully designed wheels on the base to help glide it around my home office. The shredding function could not be simpler - nor easier to use. So long as you are sensible with not putting too much paper through, it shredds wonderfully. The additional ability to shred credit cards is just great - and has saved me from spending more money than I need to!The ability to also shred CDs/DVDs is also there - but I've not yet had call to use it. I have no doubt it will be as effective as the other functions on this well made, very solid device. If you want a decent shreddder that is likely to last well, I'd strongly recommend this one.

I brought the Swordfish 1000XC from Amazon and received it promptly on free delivery. The side bin is a great advantage when it comes to emptying it and the motor appears to be robust. The actual body of the shredder is however a little thin and held together by 3 screws on the side panels and 2 on the bottom. Like all shredders the claimed maximum sheets is do-able but the motor is under load. I find 4 or 5 sheets is a comfortable number to go through or I am just being over kind on the motor? There is however a disadvantage when shredding A4 sheets rather than the slightly smaller American paper sizes as the mouth is only about 5mm wider than the paper so if it doesn't go in straight you get a build up in the corners that clogs up the exit of the shredder.I just wish all manufactures would increase the width of the mouth so it is 2 or 3 cm wider than normal paper to allow it a clean exit from the mechanism.Am I happy with the product, yes compared to the alternatives at that price.

As a light / home office user having gone through at least five shredders in the past three years, the additional expense for this product has proved worthwhile after some six months of heavy use (which for us is some three reams of paper per week). If you cannot afford to spend the starting prices of £300 upwards for the upper end models (which are far better made such that the manufacturers realise will not have to fork out on their guarantees - if you are one of these customers, then you will find better deals other at other reseller outlets); and have gone off the cheapest model available from a basic search; this model is ideal. The item was shipped direct by the manufacturer within two days with a considerable saving (£86)versus the apparent (£200 plus) RRP. The shredder appears to perform as advertised (which is unusual as far as the more budget offerings) are concerned.

My less expensive Fellowes shredder had packed up - the blades had bent! So I decided to spend more this time. One look at the blades and the parts that attach them to the axles certainly give the impression of a much more robust build with the Swordfish 1000XC.It does say you should oil frequently so am about to order oil.First use showed this item cuts as it says - you end up with small rectangular pieces and it will cut 10 sheets (but I would not do so as a norm). The manual says stop after 3 minutes of shredding and let shredder rest for 20 minutes. It does seem to get warm.Have not tried credit cards but have put in cardboard (torn into strips of a similar width). These were shredded with no difficulty.I intend to shred most paper I receive - I am about to try out the dry paper log maker (also from amazon)so will see with interest how long this shredder lasts.

This is the second of this particular model I have purchased. The first one was back in 2009 and that is still being used on a daily basis in 2017.It does chew credit cards up with no issues and will do multiple sheets of paper - However, I find that the claim of ten sheets at once is pushing the capability of the machine a little too far. Expect to have overheating issues if you want to do that kind of shredding with this machine. The pull out draw with its window is very useful and convenient - The final shred is good, and with regular oiling this machine should last many years. It has an overheat facility built in. I have hit that a few times over the years and it requires around ten minutes to reset. It has the usual reverse facility and also standby and off switchesAll in all a decent machine, but more for the home user than a business user in my opinion.

I was concerned that reading some of the reviews this would be flimsy and noisy. Well it makes a noise, but what do you expect? Due to the design I suppose that people might say that it is flimsy out of the box, but once you put it together the shredder becomes very rigid and has a considerably more robust feel to it.The paper is chomped into small pieces and it would be difficult to get any sense out of reading the bits so it looks like a secure solution for the dumping of your personal papers. My only surprise was that the design does not lend itself to putting a bag in the hopper, but in reality that is probably totally uneccesary and I am just being picky.I picked up some lubrication sheets at the same time.I might as well trying to keep it going for as long as possible, although this is only being used for home use, so might well outlast me!

It's not often I find the time to reveiw a product and I have certainly bought a lot from Amazon and am always impressed by their service. After having several of the everyday cross cut shredders which are too small and unbelievably cumbersome and messy to empty, this one is a dream come true! I work from home so I have a lot to shred! This one has a drawer, with a little window to view how full it's getting, so you only need to pull it out and empty. Very little mess involved and a much larger capacity than the everyday ones you can buy everywhere. Takes up to 10 sheets of 80 gsm paper and even has a credit card slot!I paid £66.93, which included postage, from an Amazon Market Trader called 'The Warehouse.Com.I ordered it Sunday evening and it arrived Tuesday morning! Unbelievable service!

Having worn out several 'home shredders' in the £30 to £60 price range, I decided to splash out and pay a little more for this shredder and am really pleased that I did.It is (compared to my previous "Fellows" machines)quick and very easy to use. I use shredder oil on the teeth about every two or three bins full. It takes 5 or 6 sheets of A4 easily, and at this rate I have worked the machine on continuious runs for well over two hours at a time - only once did it stop due to an over-heat cut-out, not bad at all.If you are considering a new shredder, I can fully recommend this one as a "heavy-duty" home-office machine. It is not industrial and I suggest that you do not run it at the full recommended load of 10 or more sheets (less haste, more speed is the order of the day).
