Whilst I am no expert in appraising single malt whiskey, I can only review according to my own personal view, I know what I like and I do like this. Coming in at £20.50 for a nicely boxed single malt you would probably not be expecting too much. However, I was very surprised at the depth of taste in this little gem. It is slightly peaty, slightly sweetish and has a nice rounded mouth feel, more akin to a better known expensive bottle. I think that for this very low price you are getting a very good bottle of single malt here at a price you would expect to pay for blended. As I said, I am certainly not an expert, but I think in this price bracket you would be hard pressed to find better.

I've recently returned to drinking Scotch after a long time away and have discovered that the Peaty Islays suit my taste buds a lot more than they did 20 years ago. There are some very expensive Islays out there-this isn't one of them and falls into the budget end of the price range. The peatiness isn't to everybody's taste but if you like that then this offers good value for a weeknight tipple. Of course there are dozens of better Scotches out there but you have to spend a lot more to enjoy them. Some reviewers say this Bowmore No 1 tastes like medicine or cough syrup. It doesn't-it is the peat smoke and that isn't overpowering. I'll be ordering again.

I feel I need to leave this whisky a 5-star review if only to counteract some of the (frankly, ignorant) reviews by people describing it as 'chemical' or even 'horrible.' These are CLEARLY reviews by people who have NO idea what an Islay whisky tastes like.Let them stick to their Speysides or Highlands. There's nothing wrong with a nice Speyside or Highland. But Islay is different, and if you don't get that, you shouldn't really be reviewing an Islay and implying there's something wrong with this one in particular.OK, tastes vary. But I LOVE Islay whiskeys, and at the current price, this one is hard to beat.

For under £21, and on offer, this Bowmore No 1 represents Islay malt whisky at its best. Lagavulin 16, at £50 is smoother and peatier. Laphroaig is far peatier. And Ardbeg, possibly the best of the bunch, features many more flavours from peat to sherry. You'd expect that for £40. But at half the price this Bowmore is simply superb, serving as a perfect introduction to pricier expressions from this excellent distillery. I've sampled many ten year olds that did not go down as smoothly and deliciously as this. 5 stars from me, with thanks to Amazon for keeping the price down.

A great peaty single malt for (often) under £30 which is a pretty rare thing and a fantastic deal if you find it. The critics of bourbon cask maturing need to get real. Almost all whisky these days is matured in ex-bourbon or sherry casks. Laphroig is matured in ex-Maker's Mark casks for instance. Brands don't tend to make it a 'feature' unless they want it as a selling point - presumably not to put off whisky drinkers who like to think they're buying into some piece of pure Scottish heritage. If that's your aim you're going to need to spend a lot more than thirty quid!

Bowmore is rather more subtle than Laphroaig. Don't get me wrong, I like Laphroaig, but as a taste experience it is like being dunked head first in a peat bog, then thrashed to within an inch of your life with bunches of heather. Bowmore is rather more like a pleasant stroll around a gently fragrant peaty moor, with subtle sea breezes. A definite bonus is that Bowmore is very reasonably priced, which appeals to my "careful" Scottish nature. We all have individual tastes, but Bowmore to me is excellent as an (almost) every day dram of choice.

You wouldn't fill a glass with half of your best Bourbon and half of the best Single Malt in real life, but if you did can't imagine it tasting better than this.Already have a small stockpile but while prices are this (20.70gbp) low, having trouble resisting buying more. For the Future! Just in case it's an especially extraordinarily fine yet giveaway priced vintage that (See Laphroaig Cask Strength price history) inevitably cannot last.As a connoisseur of best Single Malt + Bourbon you can get for under £30 per 70cl, this is my 5 stars.

This is an interesting whisky, I picked it up for £20.When I was in Tesco and it cost £25 reduced from £35 I googled looked on Amazon and seen it was listed as a daily deal it seemed worth it.Nose:- Islay sweet smoke, but as heavy a flame as Lagavulin, Laphroaig or Ardbeg but very much like a sweet smoke.Palate:- A little weak at 40% would've preferred a higher percentage but for the cost this makes sense.Final thoughts:- A perfect daily drinker over ice, and if you can pick this up for under £25 worth having on the shelf.

I’m not a connoisseur or anything but do like a nice slightly peaty malt on occasions. Bowman number 1 is exactly that. In my opinion much nicer than other cheapish single malts. I got 2 bottles at a good price from Amazon (£23) compared to Tesco (£35) and the “on-offer” price of £25 from another supermarket. I am a bit of an amateur with Whisky and like to have cold water with mine or ice. So I can’t compare neat v neat as a taster but the way I drink it with water, Bowmore No. 1 is smooth and slightly peaty (or maybe smokey).

I favour strong peaty Islay malts and I was looking forward to trying this one. Maybe it is my taste buds failing, but I didn't really get the flavour of the peaty tones from this. I was a little disappointed, but at the same time it was an enjoyable drink. If I was served this, I wouldn't complain and would still recommend it.I picked this up on a promotional price of £20, but at the current price of £25 it is still a decent whisky to be had. I probably wouldn't buy it again unless it was back on promotion

I purchased this as a gift for my husband who likes a malt "sipping" whisky. The purchase price was very much the same as a 70cl bottle of blended whisky from my usual place of purchase, therefore I was very pleased with this offer. My husband has tried it, he drinks it "straight" without the addition of water, ice or any other soft drinks and said it had a pleasant peaty taste without any undue after taste. He said he enjoyed it and would certainly be happy should I wish to buy any more of the same.

For a lighter peat flavour, you need go no further. Bowmore No 1 is lighter than many single malts and has a little bit of sweetness that balances it out nicely, making it very easy to drink. If you want something peatier and meatier, go for the 12-year old, but I really like this gentle, every day single malt and if you can get it on offer, as I did for £21.99, then it is well worth the money!

For £20 this is a steal! Smooth peaty whiskey that slips too easily.I like a peaty whiskey and buying ones that I haven’t tried before. I was hesitant about this one as it’s very cheap, but it didn’t disappoint for the money. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly not the best or my favourite, but for £20 it’s worth every penny. I drink it neat with a single ice cube.... and enjoyed every drop.

I bought this as a cheap alternative to the 12 year bowmore single malt. I will spend the extra next time. This probably compares well to similarly priced alternatives but it's not a patch on the 12year. The saving is not proportional to the difference in taste. Glad I know now but I will only buy the 12year in the future.

This is a lovely, easy drinking whisky - sweet, smokey and smooth. It has a nice finish too with the sweetness and vanilla flavours becoming more obvious. In my experience, it's a great whisky for non-whisky drinkers.Easy to drink that it went rather too quickly. Perhaps they should make it in larger bottles!
