The only two issues I have with this are the `guard' used to grip vegetables and protect your fingers is largely useless (the plastic teeth will not grip into carrots, onions or anything even slightly hard) and that even the thickest setting gives a very thin slice. Otherwise it is utterly wonderful and has hardly gone a day without use since it arrived. It's not as versatile as my old `V-slicer' but it's smaller, easier to use and is the only such device I've owned that I can pick out of the drawer without wondering if I'm going to cut myself. Some points to consider· It works best on fairly firm fruit and vegetables: if your celery is limp it will not give as good a cut.· It does not do thickslices or wide batons so you're not going to get chips or chunky potato slices!· Safe to store - blades are recessed when clicked into storage positions and blades do not detach so it's quite hard to accidentally cut yourself when picking it up.· Easy to clean, just hold it under hot running water and use a brush (it will shred a sponge or cloth) if anything gets stuck.· The handle is comfortable to hold and means you don't have to balance the slicer over a bowl.· A light touch works best (the plastic flexes a little if pushed overly hard) and you must pay attention if you value your fingers! While I'd really like something that did thicker slices I still consider this to be the most useful kitchen gadget I own. It's brilliant for salads, stir-frys, grattans and those dull little tasks like making a mirepoix or chopping onions and peppers for a sauce. Buy it and use it!

I do lots of cooking and although I am quite a dab hand with a chef's knife, it is a bit of a bind. This hand held slicer is unlike anything I have ever had before.Other reviews are complaining about how sharp the blade is but it would not work if it was not sharp!!Slicing onions is an absolute breeze! Takes literally 5 seconds to slice a whole onion. The food holder gizmo has spikes which keep the food against the slicer without slicing your fingers. Up and down quickly 10 times and the job is done.Other reviews have complained about difficulty with slicing soft veg but I managed to slice three aubergines with no problems. Squashy tomatoes may be a problem but otherwise,I am sure this could cope with anything. The whole unit stores with the plastic finger guard protecting the exposed blade so it is safe in the cupboard without worrying about cutting yourself. The Julienne function is also great and very efficient. It has three levels of thickness but I have only used the middle one as I have not needed to slice anything too fine. It is adjusted without any effort at all - just a simple slide of a plastic thingy.I love anything that will make life easier in the kitchen this certainly does that. No negatives on this product. Zyliss stuff features quite a lot in our kitchen and from garlic presses to ice cream scoops, they never let me down.Thoroughly recommended

I have been wanting a hand-held slicer/kitchen mandoline for ages and I am delighted with this. It makes it so much easier to finely slice fruit and vegetables. There are three settings which you can adjust for thicker or thinner slices. The julienne function is great for doing stir fries when you want to quickly slice the vegetables into thin strips, like matchsticks. This is a really handy piece of kitchen equipment. I have already used it many times. We have a lot of apples at the moment and it is marvellous when making apple cake; you can quickly slice the apples into thin pieces which are the same size. There are many other recipes for which it is great to have a slicer like this one and I know I will continue using it a lot.Every kitchen should have one!The only fault with it is that the little piece of plastic, the "food holder", which you are meant to use to guard your fingers from getting sliced doesn't actually work very well. I tried using it but found that the fruit/veg either got stuck (for instance, soft ingredients like apples) or simply rolled off the slicer (hard ingredients, such as carrots). Although I now use the slicer without the food holder, I take great care not to slice my fingers because the blades are extremely sharp!Other than that flaw, the slicer works very well and it is easy to clean. I am impressed by its five year guarantee!

I have an old version of this type of gadget which requires attaching different sized julienne slides. It is fiddly and, what a surprise, is never used. However, this Zyliss slicer is brilliant. I have used it twice already with great satisfaction.Everything is already attached and requires only a flick to be put into place. My potatoes came out sliced beautifully evenly. I would have preferred them to be a little thicker, but that's trivial. Then I used it to 'chop' onion and it did a fantastic job with very little fuss. They were tiny and I didn't have to worry about my fingers being potentially cut off by a knife. However, I did have to pick up the onion and put it in the right position again every time I swiped it through, but it was so quick that I had none of the onion tears and it was grated really finely. The 'holder' or whatever it is called, is shaped to the grater so you don't have to worry about slicing sideways.I love the safety feature as well. I was always wary of my fingers with the other gadget in the drawer. I shall definitely be using this item often and I recommend it highly.Warning: it is super sharp! Consequently, be careful of fingers when the grater is not in the safety position and also be careful not to grate too finely using the holder or the spikes will get sliced off - I nearly did it.

The Zyliss hand held mini mandolin works very well in what it does. It is a mini unit and is sold as one so do not expect to get chips from your spuds. There are 3 slicing depths and each one may be used with the julienne cutters if required. When not in use the julienne cutters can be retracted and the blade "closed" for safety. There is also a food holder included and this works very well in protecting your fingers. There is very little waste as only a thick peel is left when no more can be pushed through the blade by the food holder. For items that need to be cut small for say coleslaw and cold garnishes then this unit is ideal. Thanks to the very sharp blade it will do the job with ease.I prefer my salad stuff chopped into chunks rather than sliced but if you prefer slices or if you run a small sandwich shop and need sliced salad stuff then this will be ideal. For hot food such as stews I do not think the small size of the sliced/julienned vegetables will do. They do need to be bigger. In fairness this Zyliss is sold as a mini. One area where this Zyliss mini mandolin excels is in potato slices. Making dishes such as potatoes Boulangere or Dauphinoise and making potato galettes is a doddle. Using the julienne blades potato rostis are very easy.A definite 5 star that will be used often

I really like this little gadget. It is smaller & easier to use than my old mandolin, & I don't have to fiddle about changing the blades as with my previous model. Also, this juliennes, fabulous for salads/garnishes/cole slaw. Yes, the blades are sharp, but then, they need to be for it to work effectively. As long as you use the guard & follow the instructions, all is safe. It slices perfectly, & what I appreciate greatly is the way you can adjust the thickness: three settings. I have now made several batches of veggie crisps, particularly loving the parsnip crisps, & it has produced great potato slices to top a hot-pot. I find that it does, as it is claimed, slice soft fruits/veg very well, giving me, for example, uniform tomato slices for my tomato salad, & making slices of onions for my curries etc in double-quick time. Yes, I own an excellent cook's knife & I enjoy using that, but this is so quick & easy & a joy to use that I reach for this as often as I do my knife. Okay, it is a little difficult to store in the drawer due to the curve of the handle, & there is the possibility of losing the parts, but I have propped it up against the tiles under the knife rack, the loose parts next to it. I will continue to use this Zyliss hand held slicer on a regular basis & can highly recommend it.

When I saw this item, I thought how ideal for 'Her Who Cooks' in this humble abode as this is another of those natty devices that are really useful in the kitchen unlike some that are not to be named in the same breath.. Construction is basic but functional and comes with a very good value 5 year guarantee which is quite something in this day and age. In use the device does exactly as it sez it do on the instructions. It's so good - hang on a minute ... make sure the dear Lady is not looking - and it's quite sharp in that the dear soul made a silly slip and cut her finger(!) and yes, care should be taken when used as with anything that involves a sharp cutting blade or edge to it.Overall it's a quality item that really works and is reasonably foolproof, apart from the last bit I have just related and she still can't work out how she managed this feat and so was really 'pilot error' and would recommend it to anybody who wishes a good looking result and something that will last longer than the 'cheapies' seen on assorted market or trade stalls that don't quite live up to the illustration on the box the item comes in as we have brought them in the past and they have made an early appearance in out recycling bin.

It has taken me a while to get around to reviewing this item because I have been quite scared of using it!The point is, the points! Or rather, the blades. Every time I looked at it in its cupboard, a small sense of dread washed over me as I envisioned slicing away, getting enthusiastic, and slicing my fingers open. Now that I have finally got down to it, I find that it is in fact very well and ergonomically designed. The red handle tool (stop me if I'm being too technical!) did safely prevent me from fulfilling my premonition! So, once I realised I was safe, slice away I did.And now I have done prep for stirfries, salads, Julienne vegetables etc. and can report that, to date, no injury has been sustained!Further, this is an excellent item. It is sturdy, the blades are sharp and the colours keep reminding you to keep your self safe. Which is always a good thing. In an ideal world, the red handle cool would latch on to the main body of the device in some way which would absolutely ensure minimum danger. But this is not that device. Until someone does invent that, it only gets four stars.

Sometimes you get a new gadget in your home and wonder how on earth you ever managed all these years without one. I felt like that as soon as I effortlessly started churning out sliced and julienne veggies and salad. All these years slicing and dicing, and it took a fraction of the time, the slices were of a consistent size, and oh my did I feel silly, it isn't as if this is a new invention.Yes, you do have to be careful as the blade is very sharp, but so are my collection of knives, and learning how to chop properly, and simple things like always having dry hands, and always use a proper chopping surface so the knives didn't slip, became habit, second nature. Working with any sharp blades, protect your hands, and don't do anything foolish. This piece of gear is brilliant. Why I overlooked mandolines in general and never got one before is a mystery to me, and so I am absolutely delighted, but feeling a little embarrassed now.I cannot compare with others, but this one is a nice size to manhandle, with a comfortable handle, feels extremely well made, and the blade is of excellent quality.

Easy is the word I find myself uttering every time I've used this slicer. It works perfectly, it's easy to use and easy to wash and get ready for its next use. With its various settings, slicing all sorts of foodstuffs to my chosen thickness is a breeze, and adding the julienne setting provides the versatility I need for all my different dishes. The blade is very sharp, helping you slice even the toughest ingredients without effort, but thanks to a well-designed food holder your fingers will always be out of the way. Just make sure to never underestimate the blade, and ALWAYS use the food holder.Once it's used, put the blade in lock setting and you're free to wash and scrub it without your hands, sponge or brush ever touching the blade. Keep it in lock setting for storage and you won't have to worry when getting it from a cupboard or high shelf. It's well designed and versatile. Easy to use, easy to clean, works a treat and, as long as one uses it with a little bit of attention, will provide easy, fast and safe slicing for all your cooking needs.Recommended!

How many kitchen gadgets have you bought over the years, use a couple of times and put them in the back of your cupboard never to be seen again. Yes it's happened to me and I always end up giving away anyway. However I guarantee that this item will remain on your desktop purely because of its functionality and will be used most days of the week never to see the back of the cupboard.First of all its size shape and versatility makes it a must have kitchen item. It's real selling point is the ultra-sharp blade which is razor like. Do not use it without the cover guard. It cuts from razor thin to reasonable size for vegetables and particularly salad stuff. The only comment I would have concerning potatoes is that the blade thickness is not wide enough for potato dauphinoise but brilliant for sauté potatoes although some reviewers might disagree with me but I hasten to add that it is only my opinion and certainly not a minus for the Mandoline itself.I highly recommend this gadget as its size is handy without being intrusive and its versatility is quite exceptional.

This is such an impressive kitchen gadget, I was going to make a video to show you how good it is! My review's already late, though, so I'll have to upload a video afterwards.I was sceptical about the thickness gauge, as it's hard to see how it makes a difference, but I was wrong. When the slider clicks into place, the body of the gadget moves slightly in relation to the blade. I got transparent onion slices with the finest setting, and lovely even slices of potato on the thickest. There are three settings. The plastic holder/protector had me flummoxed at first, until I worked out it fits back on with a click-and-slide motion, rather like early mobile phone backs! Put it on with the smaller part towards the handle. When using the slicer, you can grip your piece of food with the 'spikes' on this cover, to avoid possible accidents.I own good, sharp knives and two kinds of food processor, but am using my new Zyliss almost daily. If you've been dithering about whether to get one, stop dithering! It is a very worthwhile purchase.

This is far better than my previous mandolin. I'd never been able to get consistently thick slices, as the leading edge had always been thicker than the trailing edge. With this model the back edge of the `pusher' is shaped so that you can easily maintain pressure on the trailing edge and get nice even slices. It's main job is slicing for microwave crisps, and I've produced many successful batches (a fantastic fat-free snack for people fighting the sat fat war). This mandolin also has a Julienne feature, which I now use several times per week. It only takes a couple of minutes and the resulting carrot sticks microwave in 3 or 4 minutes. I've discovered these are popular with people who aren't otherwise very keen on veg. However the Julienne blades are unforgiving and you do need to make sure you keep your fingers away from them (been there, seen it, done it, wearing the plaster). It goes through the dish-washer happily on the top shelf, but unsurprisingly the clear plastic deck is starting to become discoloured.

I love gadgets that make life easier and that is just what this does. With this modern take on the mandolin you can slice to varying thickness with a super wipe clean device that provides all the benefits with none of the down falls. Don't get me wrong I love the traditional wooden versions but in modern hectice lives you may not be able to attend to the essential of thorough cleaning and that would be a big mistake as personally I cannot afford days off of work for food poisoning. There is a handy locking mechanism and an excellent if at times fiddly device for holding vegetables etc., that you run across the slicing blade. It can as far as I can tell go in the dishwasher and that is a super bonus ...go on treat yourself, your chips will never have been so uniform and your crudites never as equal.Tried it most recently on my stew and had the dubious compliment of someone asking whether this was a ready meal - cheeky!

This slicer is a fast, efficient and easy to use way to quickly chop up vegetables for food. Everything comes out of the packaging and is ready to use after a quick wash in warm soapy water and one can be up and running within 5 minute or less.I must admit I was terrified of using anything resembling a kitchen mandolin since I could imagine getting cutting myself in the most unpleasant ways. However this slicer is nice and safe and easy to use. It also comes with a food holder so there is absolutely no way one can hurt oneself provided one always uses this and remembers to close the blade back into the unit so that the edge is flush with the plastic - that way if you run your finger down the business end,it will be across the plastic not the sharp metal.I am happy with this kitchen gadget and feel certain that it is one that I will regularly use with complete safety
