Bought to supplement four big-brand flashes, this rapidly became my #1 pick-up-and-use unit. It was intended as a stop-gap while one of my Metz guns was being repaired and upgraded - the Yongnuo cost less new than it cost to repair the Metz. For LESS money, I now have a new flashgun while the Metz is now repaired but still an old flashgun. The YN565EX is solidly built, it is really intuitive to use and has been very reliable so far. The size, design and styling are extremely reminiscent of Canon 580EX/580EXII units to the extent that you can almost identify which Yongnuo bits emulate which model Canon bits (eg hotshoe lock is Canon 580EX-like with no weathershielding, battery compartment lid is Canon 580EXII-like but lacks the unimportant lock)LIKES:(1) Easy-setting controls.r>(2) Quick battery change with CLEAR polarity marking (Metz please note BOTH aspects!).(3) Canon/Nikon compatibility in slave mode (very useful for those students who own Nikon while I use Canon).(4) Decent power for the physical size.(5) Terrific value for money.DISLIKES:(1) Open flash button is quite hard to press - you need to use thumbnail to push it in far enough.(2) Nikon-fit flash should have Nikon-fit port for external power packs. It has Canon power port which is illogical.(3) No high speed synch (the strobe facility is a catchy marketing gimmick but, like every other make, it is no more than a gimmick with little truly practical use by comparison). The YN565EX proved to be as familiar and easy to use in 2 days as my Canon and Metz flashes were in 2 weeks. There have been occasional internet comments about dubious reliability - I have no complaints whatsoever in this respect, it worked out of the box with no hassle whatsoever and has continued to do so. As have the only other 3 of which I have personal experience; that makes a 100 percent success rate. I should add that for me this is a working tool, 40+ years professional photography leads me to regard equipment as a tool to get a job done and not just a pretty thing to be polished and fawned over. My YN565EX works for a living, with the emphasis on W O R K S.How much do I like it? Well, on my recommendation three of my students now have the same flashgun and I plan to buy at least two more for myself. It has little foibles such as no click-stop on the tilt/swivel head which is not what I am used to; but that is merely a difference and not a fault. It is not perfect, but nor are my Canon or Metz units either and I know of two failed Nikon SB900s in the last fortnight. So what IS perfect - paying top price for well-known names apparently does not guarantee perfection either. This flash, despite the scepticism in some quarters, is worthy of a place in any camera bag and at the price the eternal question - Should I buy one is - a total no-brainer. To cover all the bases, the answer to that question is YES. I too hesitated. Should I buy this or should I stay with big name brands? What initially was a use-till-the-proper-one-is-repaired has proved a sound investment and one I am delighted to recommend to absolutely anyone. Frankly, I would now consider that buying a big name brand was spending 4+ times as much money for no real gain apart from puerile and inconsequential 'bragging rights'. The YN565EX represents proper, down-to-earth value for money. Buy 3 Yongnuo and have money for petrol to go take photos or buy 1 'biRead full review...

I already own three Canon 430EX I & II and one Canon 580EX. I bought YN-565EX because I needed one stronger flash than 430EX but for lower price than 580EX has. And I needed a flash to have HighVoltage connector (for additional battery pack). 430EX does not have this, 580EX is overpriced so I went with YN-565EX.I like the build quality. I also own some other products from Yongnuo and I knew that this item must be well built. And on my opinion it is. There is also good thing that the menu looks just like in Canon Speedlites. I like the factory menu options and that it allows many thing to change/improve.But what I don't like is its uncertainty.I used it two times as off-shoe flash powered with new and full Eneloops and with 100% working receiver and it just did not fire. Once just, other three times no. On 1/8 manual power. So I do not use it for any very important thing where I can not afford stay without flash. And I do not like its very uneven brightness of the flash. If I do continious shooting on manual flash program with power 1/1, I get seven firings before it needs some time to recycle. And from this seven flashes two are normaly exposed and all others are differently exposed. It is seen that from third to seventh firing the luminated area is every shot a little darker. I don not have this problems with 430EX's or even 580EX.But after all for the money it is offered, this product is not good but very good. Compared to other similar not very known brand names of flashes, no-one offer so many good factors in one flashgun for price like YN-565EX costs. If I ever need another good flash for low cost and will not use it in a professional way, I will go with YN-565EX. It is enough good. For every serious job like weddings, prom nights and similar, this flash is still under a question mark. Maybe it will work perfectly but.... what if not?I would not take risk anymore. I did two times and have bad experiences and I will not again. Until they will improve its performance.Read full review...

These look the business with impressive specs, but the manual gets lost in translation. I doubt it's reliability! Warranty return on a daed Canon version was a pain and negated the initial cost advantage. I bought this one for a Canon. (and then a Nikon the week after on promotion) Impressed enough at first (hence the Nikon purchase too). All turned to dust very quickly when the Canon version failed completely after 200 +/-flashes and I had to return it to Hong Kong. Lots of hassle and setttled for a refund. The cost saving carrot soon gets eaten up when these things fail. You pays your money you takes your choice! With the return postage cost, having to make a video to prove to one of the HK based traders what problem I was having, then the hassle of writing back and forth. Blah blah blah - pointless grief and simply not worth the time and trouble. Finally, I gave up!I also have the Nikon version, took me a while to suss out the Multi (strobe) feature (due to manual not being lucid and me slow to realise a slow shutter speed was needed to get the multiple flashes going). Now, I have to say (thus far) I am really pleased with the whole thing.Instruction manual needs rewriting in English though. All in all, - now after a rethink - Yes - I recommended it.An older YN560 Flash has also started to become erratic after just a few months. All in all, the ideas and designs are superb but too many failures and too much grief in returning them to the Far east. I've given up on YN flashes for now.I'm sure they will get the problem of reliability beaten in due course, but just now it's like the hype of a mission to Mars, only to see the thing blow up in mid air. Frustrating!Other (less sophisticated) Yongnuo equipment I have is very good though (so far!).Read full review...

Bought one of these to use off-camera and as a spare on camera. I like to vary between ETTL and manual off-camera and this seemed to give the best of both worlds at an amazing price. The build quality (externally at least) is so far above the previous flashes released by Yongnuo. It looks and feels pretty much like the 580EXII which this is blatantly modelled on. For Canon users with a 580EXII the controls will be very intuitive as the layout and GUI again are based on the Canon design.Performance is very consistent both on and off camera. I was so impressed I bought another and use these in preference to the 2 Sigma Super 530s I have. I have kept the Sigmas as backup as there are still reports of these flashes failing after a period.I'm not sure if that's just the people who have had a problem being more keen to review rather than those who haven't.There are a couple of differences between these and the Canon 580EXII which should be noted as they could be a deal-breaker for some...The 580EXII supports HSS whereas the 565EX does not.The 580EXII can be used as Master whereas the 565EX cannot.More minor differences are...The 565EX has a more traditional screw-lock unlike Canon's sliding lock. The battery door on the 565EX does not have the additional sliding lock (but the door on the 565 feels extremely secure). The 565EX does not have the weather-proofing of the 580EXII.Personally I'd rather have one 580EXII and three of the Yongnuos rather than 2 580EXIIs. I don't think there's a better value for money flash out there at the moment.Read full review...

Read full review...

I have bought this product to take photos in places that haven't got many light, such as churches, night clubs, and such.I wasn't expecting much for such a low price, but I was surprised when I tried it. It can even be configured by the in-camera menu, so you don't have to remember how to control it from the flash body! This flash is compatible with many Canon cameras, it is even compatible with an old EOS 300 (not digital, 35mm film SLR)! The TTL works fine. The optical modes are nice, and easy to use. I have not tried the wireless mode for nikon and canon because my camera does not support it and I do not have a transceiver. The light is much more powerful than a 430EX by Canon, close to the 580EX.Also it has a cardboard reflector, where the 430EX lacks of it. Its size is almost the same as the 580EX.It lacks of High Speed Sync and Master Mode, but if you don't need them, this flash will do for the third of the price of a Canon 580EX. If you need them I would go to the Nissin 866 instead of the Canon 580EX anyway.Sorry for my English, I'm Spanish.Read full review...

This is an excellent flash for the money. For Canon users in particular this flash works well as a wireless slave flash using either a commander unit like the ste2 or a 580EXII Flash. If you have one of the newer Canon bodies like the 60D or 600D these have wireless ettl flash built in and works fine with these flashes. They are well built and the controls are easy to use and allow for plenty of fine tuning to your own preferences, the ettl works brilliantly. These flashes are a lot more power hungry than the previous models such as the YN-468 but they can accept power from an external power pack to compensate for this. For the money, these are the best flashes for cost out there right now without question.I am a professional wedding and fashion photographer and when I'm at shows or weddings I need to know I can rely on my gear as it can be 4-6 hours straight taking photos of hundreds of outfits and models in a show. This flash has never let me down and it also runs a lot cooler than the previous 468 model which tended to overheat.Read full review...

Bought this instead of paying top whack for Canon equivalent. Very pleased with the results.Took a few goes to get it working off camera with my Canon 90EX as the master on an EOS M but that was because I jumped in without understanding the manual.Once it was set up (actually very easy if you read the manual) it produces very good results with a white balance similar to a Metz Mecablitz 54MZ-3 that I borrowed from a friend. It's actually physically quite light considering how large it is in comparison to the EOS M. It is well balanced when mounted on the camera.Build quality is good. The tilt and turn head is also solid, clicks positively into the preset positions and doesn't need any button presses to unlock it.One down side is that the diffuser is quite hard for me to pull out - might be easier for someone with longer nails.A range of flexible settings will probably be more than enough for a professional - I'm a keen amateur and won't need anything more advanced than this.Read full review...

This flash is great as both a backup and primary flash. The settings were pretty simple to go through and figure out on your own even without the manual. At £70 (with shipping) this flash felt like a steal! It's very easily comperable to the SB-700 or a younger brother to the SB-900. This flash has descent build quality, has most of the functions of the SB-700 and is about 2/3 stop more powerful. The only function it doesn't have is the ability to act as a MASTER in the CLS wireless system. My camera already does this through the built in flash so this isn't an issue for me. This product does what it claims. The TTL mode seems to work like a charm. Very accurate and reliable. It also recycles rather quick.Buy this flash, save yourself money!

Physically similiar to the Canon 580 EXII, in function the YN565EX is more like the 430 EXII. Build quality is reasonable and the wireless connection using the EOS 600D was simplicity itself. This speedlite has no flash master capability but with the 600D and it's built in wireless master function I didn't require it. The output is reasonable. The recycle time is similiar to the 430. The only thing I'd change at this price point would be a Canon type lock instead of a thumbwheel for mounting foot. It doesn't get full marks simply because I haven't had the opportunity to use it as much as I'd hoped so I haven't explored all the possibilities yet.Having said that I don't have any complaints so far.

I bought the 580EXII a while back and it ended up being faulty! The YN-565EX is a superb flash gun at a fraction of the cost f canon't leading flashes! Its powerful, is fully Ettl compatible, has a full manual mode, runs on AA batteries the same as the canon equivalent.... great unit. What it doesn't have is fast sync... no problem since I do not use it. Neither is it a master flash like the 580EXII. If you don't need those functions this flash is a superb money saver!!! The flash works off camera and on. For £450 cheaper than the leading canon Units its a no brainer.... wish I had invested in this unit instead of my 580EXII. 5*

I am new to flash photography, so I wanted to gain experience with flash without spending too much money. This product meets my all my needs so far. I have used it for experimenting with mainly bounce flash off ceilings and off camera shooting using optimal slave (S1) and manual mode, triggered by my Nikon D40 on camera flash on lowest power setting. This has worked very well. I also like the option with multiple flashes. I have experimented with that too, and will explore this more. Definitely recommend this product.

Ideal as a first speedlight, especially for such a reasonable price - bought it to use indoors at a wedding without much prior experience using external flash. Fairly lightweight, one set of batteries lasted several hours, and easy to get to grips with quickly. It helped illuminate low light scenes consistently, not harshly, and the manual mode gave me control over the output which was ideal as the ambient light changed whilst moving from place to place throughout the evening. Very satisfied with the purchase.

6.3.2013

I don't have a lot of experience with flashes, other than the built in flash on my Canon 550D. With the Canon flash being very expensive, and after reading reviews on the Yongnuo, I decided to make the purchase.Overall, I am very pleased at the quality of my photographs, with a vast improvement over the use of the built in flash. As I have no experience with the Canon (or other brands), I can 't make a comparison. But for what I use it for, I find it excellent value for money.
