This flash is excellent value for money when you consider that the Pentax equivalent usually sells for around £340 and is rarely seen for less than £290. It appears just as durable as my elderly Cobra D650 (now about 20 years old) with a similar body design. It has far more functions than the Cobra, there have been some clever developments in the last few years.I'm amused by the reviews on Amazon.com along the lines of 'I dropped this flash on to a concrete floor and it broke - it's rubbish!' Yes, if you are ham fisted and clumsy you may break it. The battery compartment door is a fairly standard design and should, with care, last many years...Blaming the flash for poor photographs seems another favourite pastime.TTL or P-TTL flashes will not provide a magic solution for poor technique; there has to be a lot more input from the photographer when doing flash photography, no matter how powerful or computerised the flash is.The high power of this flash (Claimed max Guide number 61m, it tests as powerful as the top of the range Metz equivalent with a Guide number of 58m) can be a problem as there is a limit to how much it can reduce the power and I tend to use the old Cobra (Guide about 36m) on 'Auto'(using a thyristor on the flash to measure the light rather than the camera's through-the-lens metering)) in situations where the power is not needed (i.e. when you are not in a Zeppelin hangar or one of the larger medieval cathedrals.....OK, so I'm exaggerating slightly...) The Cobra will sync on auto with even the latest Pentax K-5 II, though the Cobra's version of TTL is out of date as Pentax have gradually moved to their slightly different P-TTL system. (AFAIK the last Pentax camera which could do TTL as well as P-TTL was the *istDS2 in 2005).Discussions in the Pentax forums seem to agree that the k-7 and k-5's P-TTL sometimes has problems at short distances (generally over exposing by about 1.5 stops), whereas the older flash's Auto mode gets more unreliable at further distances - so both techniques compliment each other nicely - I'll leave you to work out exactly what are 'short' and 'further' distances.Beginners should note that though the Sigma flash may sync at camera shutter speeds up to 1/180 of a second, the flash duration is much shorter; roughly 1/700 sec or less, so camera shake is not usually a problem as the important picture information is recorded during that 1/700 of a second. There is also a high speed sync mode (Sigma calls it FP flash - FP for Focal Plane -instead of HSS) for advanced users which allows the Sigma to sync at higher shutter speeds but lower power using a series of very fast pulses. My advice to novices with this flash is what I was told many years ago - learn to bounce the light (sideways, backwards, up and down) and diffuse.Don't use a high powered flash direct at close range, you will struggle even with fancy metering.Don't expect every shot to be a success; Professionals with years of experience will think they are doing well if they keep more than one shot in a dozen. These days you can also learn to use the camera's histogram as an aid to flash work; there are some good guides to this on the Internet.UPDATE: The over exposure problem with the K-5 and K-7 seems to have been fixed with the new Pentax K-3 which appears to work perfectly with this flash.

Serious power for the money. All the features you would expect however not compatible with pocket wizard plus x. Had PW working on this for 2 days with no joy. Turns out the hot shoe pins are laid out differently than standard so even with adapters does not fire even in manual or slave mode. Have kept it and used as optical slave of another flash. Great flash though and serious value.

Only used this once but was good only down side was sometimes the built in flash took over this may have been down to the batteries being low as partner brought cheap ones not had chance to try it since with good batteries will update review when have tried it with them

Other than being a bit pricey AND the plastic shoe this is a very good flash. I've had two shoes break in 3 years and the repair cost is half the initial cost. So this time I just replaced the flash.

excellent value have used it several times a good addiction to my canon 7D. A good alternative considering what I would have had to pay for the equivalent canon.

Although not having used this flash extensively yet, from the use I have made of it it is more powerful than the one I have used up to now. This is a Samsung
