If you've had Yankee Candles in the past but, like me, found some of their fragrances a bit sweet-toothed and overpowering then this new Yankee range of Wood Wick candles might work for you. As the name implies the wick is formed from strips of wood not string and it makes a constant fizzing and crackling noise as the candle burns, this is presented as a feature but I would imagine it might annoy some people. It's not quite the sound of a crackling log fire, it's obviously much smaller than that, but it's sort-of atmospheric - although to some ears it could sound a lot like background static on an untuned radio. In an otherwise silent room it can be a bit aggravating but as a background ambience it works well enough and is bound to be a conversation point for any visitors. This Hourglass candle arrives simply but safely packed and looks great even before you light it. The glass jar is heavy-ish and feels good quality especially with its real turned-wood lid and subtle branding. There's a Wood Wick plaque halfway up the outside of the jar and it's removable quite easily - I took it off right away in case the heat of the burning candle welded it more permanently to the glass. It would be simple enough to remove any remaining wax (pop the jar into a warm, not hot, oven for 5 minutes and then wipe it out with kitchen paper) and keep the jar to use afterwards. The wax is a mix of Soya and Paraffin and seems softer than most Yankee candles and it seems to melt quicker too. That means it melts across the full width more easily, you should allow this to happen because it leads to longer burn times. I've burned our candle for three evenings now for several hours each time and it's only about half way down the jar, so it seems to be a long-lasting wax too. We got the 'Fern' fragrance and it's a distinctive but muted aroma with a natural quality (although it probably isn't) and leaves the room nicely fragranced without being overpowering.Overall I'm really impressed with this range from Yankee, I like the muted, more natural tones both in the presentation and aroma and the jars are much more stylish than the standard Yankee ones. That fizzing, crackling wick might be more of an annoyance than a feature to some people and you have to remember it's not optional, you can't switch it off, but if you're looking for a candle that's a bit different and stylish as a gift (for yourself or others) then you just found it.

WoodWick Large Hourglass Scented Candle - Evening BonfireThere are lots of premium candles around and the USP of this one is its wooden wick that crackles ever so slightly creating a cosy atmosphere. It's a high quality product that burns for a long time and has a lovely warming subtle aroma.=== THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT ===* Luckily this doesn't smell like an evening bonfire to me, because that reminds me of wet leaves and smoke in my eyes! Instead, it has a warm, woody, comforting aroma which is there infusing the room even when the candle is not lit. It's a really lovely subtle aroma that's not at all artificial or overpowering like some other premium candles.* The wooden wick is in a cross shape, and that combination means it produces a slight crackling sound when burning, which is rather comforting and somewhat reminiscent of a bonfire* The hourglass-shaped glass container is attractive, and can be used as a small vase afterwards (just melt away any was residue with hot water* It comes incredibly well packaged for transit, and the box is easy to wrap if it is to be a gift=== NIGGLES ===* The crackling is only quite, but some might find it a bit annoying* I usually use soy candles because I don't want to be burning petroleum products in the house, and this candle is a combination of soy and paraffin* The candle life will be shortened if the wax doesn't pool each time by burning for 3-4 hours* Like all candles, the wick needs to be trimmed at least every 4 hours to prolong its life and make sure the wick doesn't smoke too much or get out of control* The product label is not quite level, detracting somewhat from the quality of the product* Funny muddy colour for a decorative candleFor sale at the time of writing this review at £25.99.

This candle is called 'evening bonfire', but that's not the smell I noticed, fortunately. It has a lovely, unusual smell, something like the heavy scent of Autumn, almost spicy sweet too. The unusual wooden wick does make it crackle like a small fire though, and didn't seem to burn down as quickly as a conventional one. The shape of the glass holder also allows the wax to pool nicely, for a prolonged burn. There are instructions under the lid, informing you to trim the wick each time, before relighting, and also a suggestion that this is not left burning for longer than four hours each time you use it. This is undoubtedly a premium product, and that is reflected in the price, which caused me do drop it from five stars in the interests of value for money.

Initial impressions of these are a sturdy, but neat, jar like packaged candle. The top is lovely and the wick easy to reach - when at the top, a little harder when it had burned down a bit - we used a long cooks match after about 6 hours of lit time to reach the wick. But the armoa, a gorgeous fresh linen smell for this we really loved it, was a strong scent when you first entered the room, but it grew on you and acted almost like a purging scent to remove the weariness of the day, really really liked this.

Wasn't sure what to expect as this is the first time I've tried a candle with a wooden wick but I'm pleasantly surprised. Most of all I love that it crackles as it burns. Thought it might get on my nerves after a while but the opposite is true and I wish all my candles had the noisy wicks. Smells lovely but isn't overpowering. Can't quite put my finger on what the scent reminds me off but it's very light and pleasant. Well packed in a Yankee box, looks lovely and would make a super gift.

My wife was VERY excited about getting one of the Woodwick candles as they'd been on her Xmas list for about the last 3 years... So we didn't wait 'til the festive season to try this out. Great smell and quirky wick made this an essential for those Autumnal / Winter evenings as it sparks and fills the rooms with a really rather pleasant scent (not too overpowering like the Yankee Candle range). The design also looks great on the matelpiece too, so its a win all round. Lovely item.

Really nice candle for a table centrepiece. I have the large Linen candle which stands about 7 inches tall jar, that has a slight hour glass curve to it. The scent is similar to the "linen" smell you would get from a bottle of fabric condtioner. The instructions suggest you should use the candle in 3-4 hour sessions 'for best burn results'. The wick gives off a light crackling sound which is quite therapeutic. I look forward to using this on Christmas Day.

My wife adores this candle. The scent is actually very nice and the way it is presented equally appealing. The wick is a cross shape which seems to be a far more sensible way to get an improved amount of the candle used in providing light as opposed to the traditional string wicks. The only question I have is the price. It is a reasonable price but no more than that. Having said this, the quality is very clear and for that reason, I'd recommend it.

I totally love these, the crackle is ace. It is like sitting next to a log fire and is really soothing to my stressy soul. The scent is subtle but pleasant though i'm not sure this is what a fern should smell like... but its nice! The jars are lovely and the lid is solid wood, it comes in a lovely box and is well packed. They make perfect gifts to yourself or to that special stressy soul in your life.I love candles and this is now a favourite

Pro'sLong lasting, burns evenly (no tunnel around the wick), smells nice.ConsThe sound. A real wood fire pops and cracks. This candle crackles. When i first heard it i thought a water pipe had burst, dripping water somewhere accessible -"Turn the telly off! SSSSHHHH. Whats that noise? What noise?Sounds like water running on a saucepanIts that candle.Thank goodness for that, why does it do that?"

Oh my word this candle is fab. The crackling noise it makes while burning is fantastic, it is so calming. I have an opti-myst fire which sits with real logs underneath on a big slate so this candle sitting in front of the logs crackling away while the fire is on is just perfect. The scent isn’t too strong so this could be better but the crackling more than makes up for this. I absolutely adore this candle.

From the moment I opened the candle, it had a really nice, strong smell, fresh and not at all waxy. I was able to fragrance the room by just taking the wooden lid off and didn't have to light it. When it's lit, the fragrance is really nice and fills the room and the crackle effect from the wick is a nice touch. It looks great on the shelf and is lasting a long time, making it good value for money.

Fantastic candle range with lovely smells which fill the whole room easily. So far I have tried Fraiser Fir and Evening Bonfire and i have loved both. The crackling wick is very soothing and the candle burns evenly when left for about 2 hours, which is great as you don't get lots of excess wax build up around the edges. Soy wax is the best, so I would highly recommend this candle.

I don’t quite know when the larger scented candles shifted up a price bracket - the likes of Yankee, Diptyque etc pushing the ceiling. This handsome and oversized candle is less ludicrously priced than those and has a pleasant complex scent that does a nice job of infusing into your home. I still find it a bit expensive but much better value for money and a lovely gift.
