There's no arguing that sports titles are one of the most popular genres on games consoles. Football, Rugby, Ice Hockey and Basketball are among the myriad of titles that can be found on various systems. They appear on the PC too of course but the console equivalents just seem to be that bit more playable unless you've splashed out on a decent joypad.EA are arguably the leaders in sports title creation and the range of sports covered is quite astounding. Over here their biggest money-spinner is without question the FIFA series. Without fail there is a FIFA title out every year and although each new version is generally just an update of the previous title people buy the title in their thousands. Here we get on to one of EA's more recent ventures - Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001.You've no doubt heard of this rather talented chap Tiger Woods. Regarded by many as the world's best golfer he has done what others can only dream of and the colour of his skin has nothing to do with it. The man is already a highly respected player who regularly wins major tournaments whilst beating the best players on the PGA Tour.In Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001 you enter the world of golf like never before thanks to the arrival of this title on PS2. Stunning graphics, correctly modelled and scaled courses along with detailed motion captured player models make this a real winner before even touching on anything else.Gooooorgeous! Thanks to 'THE POWER OF PLAYSTATION 2!', the visuals on this title are very impressive. The players are recreated quite meticulously and they're also motion captured to produce realistic movement characteristics. The courses are equally impressive if a little more functional. After a shot is played a high level camera follows the path of the ball and from here you get quite an impressive view of the course with only a small amount of pop up evident and no fogging whatsoever. Trees look great, the various types of grass are quite easily distinguished (and check out those striped fairways!) and of course bunkers and water elements are present and correct. The only complaint visually is that despite there being noises from the crowd there isn't a crowd displayed. It's a minor point that doesn't have a detrimental effect but I'm quite sure that EA, who normally provide a whole stadium of spectators in FIFA, could have at least provided a few of those 2 dimensional cardboard folk!On the hole (geddit?! - Ed) there is very little to complain about visually here and that's a relief as the graphical element is fairly important in a golfing title due to the relaxed and slightly more subdued playing style involved.Fore! Essentially there are three noises that you need in a golf game. The sound of the club hitting the ball, the noise from the ball falling into the cup and tweeting birdies! So what a relief that those three aural elements are all here as well as a range of many others. On the courses that are situated next to the seaside there is a pleasant (and seriously relaxing) wave noise as well as wind rushes and those famous birdies!! On top of that you're given realistic 'club on ball' noises, comments from the players and occasional commentary in a snooker stylee (very relaxed and quiet). Pull off a good shot and the crowd will even cheer for you. The best crowd sound has got to be the missed shot one - that 'ooooaawwwww' hits the frustration spot head on. Sound in any golfing title is important although it's by no means the most crucial element. Luckily that isn't a problem in any case as all the sounds are well above average.Features: This title has been criticised by some for being a little on the lean side and I'd have to agree that criticism is quite justified. You only get three courses (18 holes on each) and although Tiger Woods isn't the only player, the only included players are all American. You can change the name of the included players and what golfing game would be complete without the option to change the colour of their clothes?! Strangely you can only change the jumper colour and the colours are all quite normal. Bang goes my usual fun of dressing my golfer in pink trousers with a lime green jumper. You can engage in the usual game types including skins, stroke and just a plain simple tour. This can be done against computer opponents or against a friend (by taking turns although you can use more than one controller as opposed to swapping.Let's play! Controlling the game is slightly different to the traditional three-click method of previous golf titles. Here the PS2 controller is utilised fully by using the analogue control sticks (either one of them works). Simply pull down on one of the sticks and your power bar increases, when you've reached the required power, push the stick forward (quickly) to carry out the shot. I have to say that I really like this control method and it's much more realistic compared to that three-click method. It's not exactly a real golf stroke but it's making good use of the PS2's controller. There are also various other actions you can perform with the controller including club selection (usually automatic), zoom to the pin, change the angle of your shot and checking the terrain whilst putting (very effective). The verdict: Good stuff. Very good actually and although this isn't a title that you absolutely must own it's definitely heading in the right direction as far as a sequel is concerned. All we need for Tiger 2002 is more courses, more players and let me dress them in stupid clothing please!!

Tiger Woods 2001 is a very well-made game, and the pieces are in place for an excellent equel next year once EA has the time to model a larger complement of courses and golfers. As it is, it offers excellent gameplay and graphics, but it'll be up to you to decide whether you'll run out of steam after completing the three courses that are available. They're three very good courses, and the Tour and challenge modes offer plenty of variations that stretch out their longevity, but it's still a poor selection in comparison to many other golf games. If you have to have the best-looking game around, though, look no further, and if you pass on this year's model, you can be assured that Tiger Woods 2002 is going to be a very fine game of golf.

This message is for anyone who likes sports games. Its always good to have a golf game in your collection and this game is the best one i have plaid on. once you have mastered how to use the draw and back spin you can really take on the best of them out there on the PGA tour. I think you will be really tested when you get on to the greens as they can be hard to judge as they are very tricky, but again once you have mastered this you can be looking to go around the course with a vary good score. To sum this game up in 2 words. TOP GAME
